Design Challenge The climate change all over the world is being caused by the human activities and their survival strategies, which in turn has majorly effected the social and behavioral changes in them. My design challenge is how do we ensure that the skills, competencies and habits (physical, social and cognitive) gained in the early years of children help them in living a full, productive and sustainable life in present and future. The main objective is to ensure that children not only survive but thrive in life.

Summary The world would be better if the children who are the vision of our great future, when step Into adulthood succeed in living a productive life. The initial years of a child’s life are a crucial time to develop skills, competencies and habits(physical, social and cognitive) Together they are the fundamental building blocks for best start in life. Therefore, health and nutrition are crucial foundations of early childhood development. An unhealthy child may have trouble in many things like cognitive development, fine and gross motor skills, socilaizing skills and is at risk for stunted growth. Skill Development is another aspect of early childhood growth. Character traits and skills like Critical thinking, leadership, determination and resilience enable children to overcome obstacles throughout life and contribute to success in schools and life beyond. Parents equipped with better information becomes important, where one can ensure that the children will lead a productive and sustainable life in their future. Parents often miss out information that they need to prioritize the most in their children’s growth and cognitive development.
Ideally, Parents are already connected to a good network of social gathering, community institutions, schools, churches, etc. where they seek support, information and advice. On the other hand there are the other groups of parents of lower income communities who often struggle to lead a stable livelihood and meet basic demands. The question at hand is how to help channelizing these networks and create a potential starting point for i ntroducing new services, tools and information to the parents. The challenge is to ensure that their Children not only survive but thrive in life.

Field Research - visit to kindergartens in Berlin As a part of the contextual enquiry I visited few kindergartens in berlin. Interacting with them was a difficult task since the staffs were not able to communicate in English. I had to take help of my fellow classmate Raffael, who also intended to work in the context of childrens education. After interacting ith the staffs I came to know that the basic model of kindergarten education is same all over Germany. There were many overlaps in the vision of all the Schools: Waldorf School The Montessori and Kleine Traber. My insights were driven my the vision and the model of these three schools, They had divided the childhood development into three stages according to childs learning capacity. They believe in the 3 stages structure that is : Think - Communicate - Collaborate along with building capacity through Empathy, Play, Story, Synthesis, Meaning and Integration

The Parent’s approach Being an exchange student, I was privileged with accommodation facilities at a student hostel in Berlin. The hostel being an shelter for many students from abroad, I took the opportunity to interact with a few. In my daily observation I learnt that there were many young parents who were also living there besides pursuing higher education or job. I took this noble chance and tried to strike a conversation with them since they could be my potential stakeholders and would enhance my understanding and bring clarity to my design challenge.

In Association with DBSV Berlin
TACTILE BOOK Workshop
Nandana Chakraborty | Social Impact Design | Haupt Project | HTW- Exchange Semester, 2014

The 3rd angle While walking along the streets of the beautiful city Berlin, I stumbled upon a poster which invited volunteers to participate in a tactile book workshop organized by the DBSV, Berlin. I took this opportunity, as I thought that it would be great to interact with the other participants. Also, to have a look at what age group of people come voluntarily for this workshop. To my surprise there were many people who had come with their families and children. The children of different age group added a lot of value to this whole event. It was such a great pleasure and a different observation to see the children come and participate along with their parents. It a rare opportunity to see this, but I respect all the parents who are trying to imbibe values in their children right from childhood by adding value to this noble cause.

The Govt’s role The German ‘Parent Time’ (Elternzeit) is the new maternity leave introduced. I had read in an article about What is it really like to experience maternity leave in Germany. Elternzeit (“parent time” is the lovely German translation) in Berlin. In Germany, your employee position is legally held for up to three years. One you cannot be fired for deciding to take 3 years out of the workforce to raise their children. Every mother is also entitled to get a midwife right from the conceiving stage to the stage of giving birth to the child.

THE AUDIO GUIDE
WHY ? Nandana Chakraborty | Social Impact Design | Haupt Project | HTW- Exchange Semester, 2014
30
Why the Audio guide? The is the major factor when it comes to parenthood is time. During the pre - on - post days of pregnancy the mothers are under a lot of stress. Along with their health they have to look after a lot many things. Magazines, articles, online materials will take a lot of cognitive load on the mothers in this time. Things doesn’t register in their mind. Hence, the audio guide will help them to concentrate at intervals and manage time. It will help them to divide their attention to the activities at intervals.
