November 15, 2013 Dear Mr. Jones, We respectfully report on the successful completion of Pigsties, Sheep Sheds, and Toilets for Two Tibetan Communities. With your contribution of 23,094RMB in May 2013, plus, a contribution of 18,470RMB from local communities, brought 4 pigsties/ sheep sheds, (which can accommodate swine and sheep – the original proposal mentioned pigs only) and 4 toilets to 2 communities in Guinan County, Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, PR China. Before the project, these 2 resettled communities lacked pigsties, sheep sheds, and toilets. Lack of pigsties, sheep sheds, and toilets caused health problems. Locals urinated and defecated in and near village households. Such areas often put humans and livestock in close proximity, creating good conditions for diseases to cross from people to animals and vice versa. In summer, the pungent smell of human waste wafted through the village. Elders and young children were particularly inconvenienced. In general, locals’ understanding of hygiene is poor and they do not understand why they become ill or how this might relate to a lack of personal cleanliness. With your generous support, this project brought 4 pigsties, sheep sheds, and 4 toilets to Shaja and Dara communities. Building pigsties, sheep sheds, and toilets brought a safer environment to locals by reducing hygiene problems and did so conveniently, effectively, and at low-cost. It also inculcated positive attitudes toward and practices in the use and maintenance of latrines; increased awareness of good hygiene and sanitation; means less offensive odor from human waste decomposing near homes; protected the environment; and has provided conditions for locals to live healthier lives. During the course of project implementation, locals were engaged in construction work and thus certain construction skills were learned in building pigsties and toilets. Furthermore, this project brought models of building toilet and pigsties, thus encouraging neighboring villages to build such facilities by themselves. Finally, I extend my sincere thanks to you for providing this project to these 2 communities.
Sincerely,
Nangchukja Director Friendship Charity Association www.friendshipcharity.org

Project Impact
Provided 4 pigsties/sheep sheds and 4 toilets to 2 communities Trained and improved local hygiene and sanitation Provided a safe, convenient, worry-free environment for human urination and defecation Provided a safe environment for pigs Increased the human-and-swine feces free areas in villages Healthier pigs means less illness from eating pork from sick pigs
SUSTAINABILITY During the course of this project implementation, locals provided sand, stones, and labor. FCA invited local Tibetan experts to demonstrate construction skills for each project construction work. The project recipients learned construction skills and thus will be able to repair them in the future. Upon project completion, project meetings were held and rules for using toilets and pigsties were discussed. The meeting also raised awareness of sanitation among locals. Toilet owners will open the toilet for other people and repair and clean the toilet when needed. This project was implemented following the success of toilet and pigsty projects done in 7 Tibetan villages in 2010 (final report: http://tinyurl.com/893q5m9) and 2011 (final report: http://tinyurl.com/7xj6bpe). These projects brought safe, cleaner, cost-effective, modern pigsties and toilets. Manure in the toilets and pigsties is used as fertilizer for household agriculture. A basic health-training program covered how and why to use the pigsties and toilets, and raised awareness of health care, e.g., keeping the local environment clean and the dangers of stray pigs wandering into homes. Locals with toilets and pigsties no longer urinate and defecate on open ground. Animals and people no longer have close contact with waste that may transfer diseases. Human waste is concentrated in toilets and becomes natural fertilizer for cropland, reducing costs for chemical fertilizers and improving crop quality. Recipients of these projects also learned basic construction skills in building pigsties and toilets and will be able to do similar construction work FCA will hire them in the future.

COMMUNITY BACKGROUND Dara Village has 1,450 residents (220 households), and is 3 km from Gomang Township Town, 80 km from Guinan County Town, 156 km from the Prefecture Seat, and 301 km from Xining City. It is a community of former herders who were resettled in 2008. Shaja Village has 1,600 residents (236 households), and is located 2 km from Gomang Township Town, 80 km from Guinan County, 156 km from Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture Seat, and 301 km from Xining. It is a community of former herders who were resettled in 2008. These villages experience 5 months of winter, which is a barren season for crop production. The average temperature in winter is -15째 C. The average temperature in summer is 24째 C. The most common illnesses are flu, diarrhea, headache, and abdominal complaints. Due to poor hygiene awareness, locals do not wash their hands on a regular basis and bathing is rare. Parents do not advise their children to wash hands and they rarely wash their clothes.
