INDIVIDUAL PROJECT

The My Lai Massacre was the Vietnam War mass killing of 504 unarmed civilians in South Vietnam on March 16, 1968. It was committed by U.S. Army soldiers from Company C, 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 11th Brigade, 23rd (Americal) Infantry Division. Victims included men, women, children, and infants. Some of the women were gang-raped and their bodies mutilated. Twenty-six soldiers were charged with criminal offenses, but only Lieutenant William Calley Jr., a platoon leader in C Company, was convicted. The massacre, which was later called “the most shocking episode of the Vietnam War”,took place in two hamlets of Son My village in Quang Ngai Province.

SITE ANALYSIS

INTRODUCTION The site is on National Highway 24B to Sa Ky Port - Dung Quat, 3 km west of My Khe beach resort, 13 km to the North East of Quang Ngai city center. This site belongs to the Son My Memorial. Relics of My Lai massacre include one location in Thuan Yen hamlet ( now is Khe Thuan), where US soldiers killed 47 people in Tu Cung hamlet. The second location is in My Hui Village (now Khe Hoi), where US soldiers killed 97 villagers of Co Luy hamlet. The Son My vestige site, covering an area of 2.4 hectares, is located in Khe Thuan hamlet (Tu Cung hamlet, Tinh Khe commune) next to provincial road 24B from Quang Ngai city to Son My, My Khe. The relic is separated from the people’s home including the original relics have been preserved and later works have been built as additional exhibitors, reception places, monuments, gardens.

MASTER PLAN

STREAM

TERRAIN

Hydrographic system consists of a river called Sau River and a system of canals crossing the land area nurturing the surrounding paddy fields. Particularly, the canal in the relic area is where 170 people of My Lai hamlet were murdered collectively.

Terrain is fairly flat. As an agricultural land growing wet rice, around the construction area taking up about 80% of the area is paddy field.

River systems and canals here should be preserved to ensure the stability of the soil and the conservation of vestiges.

Locating far away from the site 50m toward the south is the Voi Mountains with an average height of 80m.

The rice fields create a peaceful and tranquil scenery.

CONCEPT IDEA BOUNDARY DEFINITION

The site boundary is determined from National Highway 24B adjacenting to the Sau River which extends to the Voi Mountains. This river can be considered as a special bridge linking terrain forms, which are nourished from the great balance of nature. In conclusion, the natural environment here includes mountains, rivers, plains, and an extensive canal system. STORIES BE TOLD

PAIN of the past and PEACE for the future are two inspiring design stories throughout the process of learning about My Lai. The combination of the flows of emotion in the design not only eases the sorrow from the past but also motivates the current life, letting people understand and respect the peace.

PHILOSOPHY OF DESIGN THE UNION THEORY - THE ISOLATION THEORY

Philosophy of design is the spirit, the soul of all the concept design During the massacre, there was a repetitive image of the bodies lying overlapping. The people on top tried to protect the underlying, the mother hugged her child to save that baby. The underlings were the hope that survived the massacre. A painful image but also hope. This image speaks of the Union Theory. The Isolation Theory comes from two stories. The villagers, when cornered by soldiers, had no place to hide, could not resist. They feel fear, powerless and lonely. The survivors - those who went through all these things, they still alive and carry nostalgia, obsession, loneliness and pain that can not heal. Both of them, the villagers also the survivors, have suffered solitude and isolation.

Entering the Memorial Park, the flow of history is transposed and changed by the flow of canals, along the life-line of rice fields. Just entering another space, it is another story, the experiences and emotions are completely different. It is pain, can also be hope.

SITE DETERMINATION

APPROACHING

Area : 10,5 ha

The main approaching is the motorized approaching along National Highway 24B, 6m wide.

Building densitive : 10-30% Location: The north side borders part of the Sau river and paddy fields. The west side is adjacent to the fields, residential areas and vestige site. East side is adjacent to residential area. The south side adjoins the National Highway. Function : My Lai museum, memorial square, international exchange building, library, food service, administration office, public park.

Existing village roads are also accessible to the site, which leads to other vestige sites in the Tu Cung hamlet. There are three gates entering to the site.

Memorial Square and House of Prayer are two light sources located in the canal which is the mass grave of the 170 victims of the massacre. These are two places to feel the pain, resentment and horror. As never off, the lights here reflect the harrowing history but also illuminating the future, appreciating human values and the meaning of life.

MY LAI MUSEUM IDEA My Lai Museum is inspired by the image of a stable mountain. The mountain protects the truth and justice. The mountain protects the traces of history.

With a circular structure lined up from high to low into the center, the Memorial Square represents the Union Theory. 504 pillars sympolize 504 people in the village that have fallen, covered and protected each other. The pillars are stable, chivalrous and strong. At night, each pillar becomes a bright spot as the stars.

As the end of the story be told, the House of Prayer speaks of the Isolation Theory. Sit in a tranquil space, surrounded by a grass field, close your eyes, be silent a little, and feel the loneliness. It is the emotion that the dead even the survivors have gone through. All desires is to evoke a stirring experience for each person.

MY LAI MUSEUM SITE PLAN The My Lai Museum is located in the “Land of Pain”, adjacents to the vestige site. The museum has a total area of approximately 6400 m2, one ground floor and two basements. The My Lai Museum is designed modestly in front of the fields and respectfully the neighboring relic area.

CENTRAL BUILDING SITE PLAN

MASTER PLAN

The central building is in the “ Land of Peace”. This threestory-building occupied the area of approximately 3.7 ha. It is a gathering place for visitors where they will begin the tour of My Lai Peace Memorial Park. This site is separated from the relics by a green area to reduce the noise from the activities of people.

Going deep inside the park, we will see The House Of Prayer which is surrounded by the rows of leafy trees and crouched under the reed lines. The relic channel embraces it as a metaphor of consolation for loneliness. 1 2 3 4

POINT OF VIEW ABOUT CONSERVATION AND RESPECT FOR MEMORIAL SPACE

The green areas are placed around the site to protect the quiet space when visiting, express the viewpoint of conservation. Surrounding the memorial square and prayer house are large green spaces to ensure sacred space for the ritual or prayer, tribute to the victims. To ensure that the bond between the memorial spaces is not cut off, the traffic from the central block to the museum area is designed underground.

PART ONE

CENTRAL BUILDING The central building is a different story with the My Lai Museum. Contrary to the pensive mood of the past in the museum, the central building speaks of the story of Peace. Entering the building, with the installation of open spaces, visitors can feel a stimulating and interractive astmosphere. An array of 1.2 m high and 1.5 m high concrete walls combine wood louver forms a layer of space, making the visitor interested in discovering fascinating things after these layers of space. Locating in those layers of space are trees, that maskes a coexistence of nature and architecture. This design also grants the opportunities for people to feel the nature through seasons. The space here can be divided into three types: closed space, semi-open space and open space, mainly use natural ventilation. Think of it in a further future, these spaces can be flexibly changed by moving the wall system, keeping the concept of spatial layers, but the function changes. Architecture is an actually exciting thing, not only creating a shelter for human beings but also developing human awareness and creativity.

MY LAI MUSEUM My Lai Museum displays collected exhibits after the massacre. They are the weapon of the American soldiers, bullets, guns, bombs; personal objects of the victims , documents related to the massacre ... In addition, there are also art work by artists in around the world. The display space is brought underground and few of space is illuminated by pierced holes in the wall of the roof, which creates a mysterious space and a bit of fear, arousing pain in the Massacre. These holes evoke images of the shelter of the victims avoiding attack of American Army . It is the view from bottom of the bomb shelter looking up to the sky, where the victims were in hopes of finding any chance of survival.

A light exists in spring Not present on the year At any other period. When March is scarcely here A color stands abroad On solitary hills That science cannot overtake, But human nature feels. [...] Then, as horizons step, Or noons report away, Without the formula of sound, It passes, and we stay: A quality of loss Affecting our content, As trade had suddenly encroached WHEN LIGHT COMES IN

Upon a sacrament.

BIM COMPETITION 2016 THE SECOND PRIZE TEAMWORK PROJECT

These will become elements to fill up the space. The image of undulating slope pavilions reflect a vibrant, full PART I of energetic and fresh urban street life. Why did we choose this form? If we just use the cubes typology to insert to that free space, the scenery now of this proposal is nothing more than an extended neighborhood. The foremost aspiration in our project is to design a new space carrying an unique urban experience and a fully positive energy. Additionally, providing an adequate urban void is also taken into account in the proposal, filling in the blanks does not mean to overflow it.

BUFFER ZONE

“FILL IN BLANK”

PART II PRIVATE SPACE

UNIT DISPLACEMENT

Throughout building up the concept, we have known that a part of inhabitants’ private space would be affected. The terrace is where people could rest, planting, do the normal housework, etc. Therefore, in order to provide the normal activities which are still going on and not be interrupted by the public space, we propose the new design for the private space concerning architecture language and sense of new space as a whole. By this way, the proposal would provide a satisfactory space to executing the functions which are mentioned above.

CONCEPT

Using lightweight structure for easy assembly and moving, using the roofing panel, steel framework, steel pillar and “I” shaped beam instead of using concrete gathering function, narrow space

At present, more and more public space and green spots are replaced by blocks of concrete. The “buffer zone“ between houses and houses, houses and nature, people and people are gradually disappearing. Our story begins from the Bui Vien street- the “dringking town” of Saigon,

utilize free space in rooftop

After researching carefully, we realized the difference in height between houses on street, and this exploration gave us a unique idea. With the expectation to create a more convenient and larger space, we want to utilize this feature as the main point of the “Fill in blank” project, also can maintain and preserve the originality of Bui Vien.

each space becomes a module

After figuring out that the biggest problem is space, we think of a solution finding another replaced location, the answer properly is at these houses, the space is above the rooftop creating from the difference in height of these houses. Our duty is utilizing these spaces and filling the appropriate functions instead. The “BLANK” we mentioned here is the dissimilarity of culture, points of view, generation gap. And we would like to use architect to fill these blanks.
