mainly based in Helsinki, but also around Scandinavia and the UK. I have worked with
La
Mar Bikini, NĂŠpra, Gemmi and female vocalist Nelli Matula. In the future, I plan on working with Finnish designers and performers.
proj ect development
1. an idea I start off with an idea. This is either a vibe, an inspirational picture, a colour or a whole string of ideas. A weakness of mine is to solely focus on the initial idea, which can most often lead to copying or redoing something I’ve seen before. I put all these ideas and sources of inspiration together and create a moodboard. I try and use sources such as colours, locations and moods to again, avoid plagiarism.
4. decisions
After I have the concept thought through, I will start focusing more on the location and styling. I prefer natural light, and try and find cool and free locations to shoot at. I also start browsing through online stores, magazines and pinterest for make up, hair and clothing ideas. I will also visit showrooms to loan out some clothes. After I have all my garments, I start planning what goes well together. In the end, I am quite spontaneous, so will probably come up with new ideas during the actual shoot.
2. team
I have had a lot of bad experiences in working with a team. 9/10 times, someone cancelled on me... But, it is impossible to work alone so findin a team you can trust is crucial. If I find a model, make up artist or photographer I like working with, I will most usually ask them again in the future. If I want to find people to work with, I ask around and get referred to some names. Most of the time people are very helpful and keen to help, but they are also busy, so planning a schedule that fits everyone is not easy.
5. the shoot
On the actual shoot, I make sure everyone is feeling well and that everyone is comfortable. I dress the model and advise the hair and make up arists. I either work as the photographer myself, or advise a photographer on what kind of shots I am looking for. I make sure the garments are clean, pressed and fit right on the model. I usually provide my team with snacks and remember to have breaks in between to not overwhelm the team.
3. concept This depends whether the shoot is an editorial or made for commercial purposes. If it is a commercial shoot, I research the brand, their style and values. I look at their previous work, to make sure my work reflects their brand. If I am working on an editorial, I will research the subject my concept is about. I will go through the history of the subject, look at similar trends, whilst thinking of new and innovative ways to tell a story.
6. wrap up After the shoot is done, it is my job to return all the garments I have loaned. I make sure all the clothes are in perfect condition, folded and all go to the right places. You must treat people who have helped you with respect, as that affects your future projects.

objective
location
My objective was to create a shoot for Björn Borg that was fashion forward. I would combine Björn Borgs sportswear with other garments, and create new and exciting looks. This will push the Björn Borg brand identity with its current alignment to sportswear and the lifestyle of sport. This will spark an interested within consumers to wear Björn Borg outside the gym.
>

>

>

For the location of the shoot, I wanted a sporty location with very minimal furniture and equipment going on. This is a direct alignment to the brand’s current visual identity. As I want to push the brand’s identity to a new dimension with the styling of the products, I decided to keep the traditional location choice. We decided to shoot at the gym Esport Express in Espoo, Finland .

hair & makeup To align with my choice to make the shoot more fashion forward, I decided to incorporate this in the hair and make up as well. This is my way of pushing the fashion influence in the Björn Borg brand even further. As the clothes I was using for Björn Borg were mainly black, I wanted to give the shoot a more editorial style by creating a bold and avant-garde look. In the end, we decided on a big afro with bold and colourful lips with strong eye make up.
styling
I visited quite a few showrooms in Helsinki to loan out some clothes for the shoot. I got all my Björn Borg garments from Polhem PR and a few extras from other places to combine with the main products. I also had to buy a few more pieces to complete the looks. I got a Björn Borg bralette, which I would like to style on top of a shimmer mesh shirt. I also got a Björn Borg dress which I would combine with heels. I want to incorporate a lot of layering in my styling, as that is something considered quite trendy at the moment. I want my styling of the Björn Borg products combined with everyday garments to contrast against the gym location.

FINA L PROJECT :Waiting F ilm
objective I created a fashion film for fashion brand Monki, because it is something that the brand hasn’t focused on before. It is a way to see the garments in movement, as well as being new and exciting visual content for the brand, and a way for the brand to reach previoiusly untapped networks. I believe this will push Monki’s visual aesthetic, which is a big part of their branding. For my moodboard, I found some imagery as inspiration for my upcoming shoot. I picked these images for their futuristic and modern aesthetic, which I want to bring through into the film. I chose this certain style, because it has a weird vibe, which is modern and will align with the Monki brand. I was very inspired by the film Neon Demon, Synthwave music, as well as Olivia da Coasta’s films for Minna Parikka. I was intrigued by the mellow and relaxed atmosphere, and wanted to incorporate that into my film.
location Most of Monki’s visual images are shot in a studio with a colourful backdrop. To broaden the brand’s visual image, I wanted to shoot at location. For the location, I wanted it to be very minimal and simple. Somewhere where there is hardly any furniture, and preferably with white walls. This will align with the mellow and modern vibe I want in the film.
model casting For my model casting choices, instead of going for a model that Monki might cast, I looked for a model who would fit the overall aesthetic of the film. Monki usually casts girls who fit the ‘every girl’ look. Girls who are relatable to the consumers. For my model, I was looking for a girl who would preferably have previous experience in modelling beforehand. I would like her skin to be quite fair, light blonde hair.
hair & makeup To add even more drama to the white on white effect, I want to incorporate white in my make up. Pale nudes, shimmer and white colours, to give a glowing and luminous finish. For the hair, I want a simple updo or ponytail. Maybe add some details with white eyeliner to give the look some quirkiness.
styling
For the outfit, I wanted it to be all white. I like clean cuts with a modern twist. As the theme of the film has a futuristic vibe, I want the clothes to narrate that as well.

As soon as I picked out the floral outfits to style, I decided I wanted to the location to be rough. This gives the feminime clothes a nice contrast. I’d been to the Kaapelitehdas before and knew what it looked like. I emailed them, and got permission to shoot there. The area is huge, with high ceilings, big windows and has a very urban feel to it.
objective For Gina Tricot’s SS18 collection, I wanted to create a lookbook.I created three different looks and shot at location, to provide something different from Gina Tricot’s previous imagery. The styling will be quite commercial and will align with the traditional Gina Tricot styling.
styling As I was working with the spring collection, I wanted to use bright colours and floral prints. I chose bright reds and pinks, as well as a bright green collar shirt. I wanted to combine the brights together, and use contrasting colours. For shoes, I decied to style the outfits with bright coloured shoes to compliment each outfit, and give them a very spring and happy look. I also decided to accessorise with a bright green floral Gina Tricot clutch bag. The outfits were quite simple and commercial, but also quite fun and bold. I think the outfits represent the Gina Tricot consumer.
model casting For my model, I was looking for someone who had experience in modelling before. I was also looking for someone who resembled the typical ‘Gina’ girl. Tall, slender, beautiful and nordic. I asked blogger Laura Laukka who had modeled for me before. She was trustworthy, photogenic and had a great look. Laura is fair skinned with light hair, so she would look great in anything and her complexion suits most colours.

hair & makeup The hair and make up for my look was going to be fairly simple. Just a casual everyday look to keep the focus on the garments. Again, this look will be something the consumer might look like. Nude colours, some blush and a messy DIY ponytail. I wanted to create a commercial look that the consumer can relate to and can see herself looking like.

With my styling of the outfits, I wanted to create some quite interesting and cool looks that would represent the brand. I want my outfits to look cool, edgy, modern and bold. I will combine garments together in a way that the consumer might have not thought of yet and give them new ideas. I want the styling to reflect on the brands aesthetic and have that bubbly and colourful personality shine through.
objective My objective for this shoot is to create some courageous and interesting new product shots for the fashion brand Lazy Oaf, whilst still maintaining the focus on the garments. I believe this could excite the consumers to purchase the products and help increase sales on the online store. I plan to execute this by giving a bit more of a daring styling to the outfits and hair and make up, as well as using props and a colourful backround.
location The photoshoot took place in a photography studio. For the backround, I would like a colourful back drop. As we don’t have any I can use at university, I hung up a bed sheet, to bring in the extra fun and colourful vibe I was looking for. This will align perfectly with the Lazy Oaf brand.
hair & makeup For the make up, I want a quite clean and simple everyday look with a little pop of colour on the eyes. It’s simple, and the colour gives the overall look an interesting edge our consumer carries. For the hair, I am also going for the everyday look that can be achieved by anyone. A high and messy bun on top of the head. When me and the hair stylist meet up with the model, we can consult on how it would be best to achieve. Half up-do, two buns or just one.
model casting I really like the models that Lazy Oaf casts. They are interesting looking people, who have a significant quality that makes them stand out. I wanted to find a model who would be ideally cast by Lazy Oaf and someone who aligns with the brands personality. For my model, I was looking for a girl who would preferably have previous experience in modelling beforehand. To match the quirky brand, it would be optimal to find a girl with unusual facial features.

F IN A L PROJECT :Young Bohemians Photos hoot
The term ‘Bohemian style’ developed in the early years of the 20th century. The style was to describe travellers or refugees from central Europe. At the moment in the modern day the word bohemian has been shortened to ‘bohochic’ or even just ‘boho’. Bohemian style consists of loose, colourful clothing, mostly partnered with long flowing hair. Bohemians stand out in a crowd representing a colourful counterculture based on creativity, poverty and an indifference to social structures and traditions. Within the 1950’s/1960’s the bohemian frenzy was referred to hippie travellers wearing visibly eclectic clothing, taking influence from every land they set their foot in.
The Bohemianism Era is about living an unconventional lifestyle. The term ‘bohemian’ was used most commonly in the English language in the nineteenth century to describe the non-traditional lifestyle, mostly used for artists, writers, journalists, actors and musicians. Most bohemians were unorthodox and had no involvement with political or social viewpoints. They would express through free love and voluntary poverty.
team
As a part of my Final Project, I styled a photoshoot for a photography student. I styled 16 looks in total. To prepare, I created a lookbook, as well as studied the Bohemian Era, and the trends identified as ‘boho’.

F INA L PROJECT :Red & White Photoshoot
My objective for this shoot was to create imagery based on the British subculture movement. I studied subcultures like Skinheads, Mods and Casuals. I studied their fashion and reasons why such dress codes were created. My two different looks were influenced by casuals and football hooliganism. I wanted to bring the raw and genuine lifestyle to life, and incorporate it into the atmosphere of my photos. Because most of these subcultures were popular in the 20th century, I wanted to bring a modern element into the styling of my shoot.
styling Outfit Red To symbolise power, I chose to use red as my main component in my styling. Sportswear will narrarate a very traditional Casual look, but I will combine it with something modern to give it a new edge. My styling has been inspired by Casuals and Football Hooligans, as well as Slavic Casuals.
Outfit White My second outfit is a lot more vulnerable. With a strong narrative from the 90’s heroin chic, I will use tall heels, to give my model an empowering and dominant feel. This is be a contrast to her vulnerable side.
location I wanted my location to fit the overall aesthetic. I want it to look dirty and cheap. The corridoor of my flat is very grimy and dirty, and has big windows. I also found an old leather sofa next to garbage behind a kebab store, which I thought was pretty cool. There was a lot of colours, and the sofa was quite raggety and cool.
hair & makeup For my hair and make up, I wanted to go for a dirty and gritty feel. The look I want to go with the make up is almost very ‘heroin chic’ which was popular in the 90’s. For hair, I want a greasy and dirty look. I want the model to look lost in her own mind, consumed by addiction, yet feeling glamorous and omnipotent.

Mark eting Internship at N é pr a
In the spring of 2017, I did a three-month internship with activewear brand Népra. I was in charge of their photoshoots. I planned, styled, shot and edited all of the images. I was taught about media marketing, Shopify and how a start-up company works. I also created a digital lookbook and a layout for Népra’s press kit. I wrote blog posts and helped plan Népra’s spring campaign.
Ma rk eting Internship at N épra: Wr itten Wor k
I wrote a few articles about Népra’s spring Campaign. The articles were included in the spring 2017 lookbook and on Népra’s blog.
Not So Serious We like to see life as an endless play. Since we get to choose our attitude, why not also play? On some days it is easier said than done, but it is rewarding and trains our mental muscles. However, there are a few things that can kill the spirit and perfectionism is one of them. Many of us list being a perfectionist as a positive flaw, but if we take a look at the principles of perfectionism, does it really help us grow? Ultimately, perfectionism is simply fear dressed up in fancy shoes, and fear quite often paralyses us from taking action. Getting outside your head and taking action is the only way to grow, learn, and move forward. Certainly, many of us are familiar with the symptoms. For a perfectionist it is hard to finish things; they are never happy with their results and just keep polishing the supposed outcomes countless times. In extreme cases, it might even be hard to start; why bother when
it won’t be perfect anyway? We admit to also sharing these thoughts every now and then. The truth is though; if you start something and you finish, you are 10 miles ahead of everybody else who hasn’t even started. Done is better than good, so they say. Sometimes we need to fake it until we make it, and more importantly, until we are it. It means that we practice some skill, language, and attitude as long as we become it. Life is like a endless play; it is not that serious. We have so many opportunities if we just choose to use them. Failures are part of the journey, but they are a valuable chance for us to learn from and grow; we only need to choose to see it, and choose to play.
Text by Ama Niutanen & Nanna Talvitie Edited by Alexander Burchell
Here Comes the Sun To celebrate this Summer season, Népra wants you to go back to the time in your life when exercise was all about having fun; playing football for hours with your friends, or going for a therapeutic walk on the beach. We want to remind you about the child in you. It’s not about how much you can lift, but how good it makes you feel when doing an activity you can enjoy with your friends and family. Go outside and enjoy the sun. Go to the park and throw a frisbee. The options are infinite. We just want to remind you about this point; life is not that serious. We agree it is important to have goals, but don’t let them take control of your life. Life is about playing, not fighting. If something feels like a constant battle, it might not necessarily be the right thing to do. If doing something that is a constant fight backfires, is it always worth it? We need to choose our battles carefully.
We encourage you to try something new. Exercise is a great way to bond with friends and to get to know new people. Why not ask a friend to try out a new activity with you? In the end, we rarely regret the times when we had fun. We cherish those times in our hearts. This season, let’s keep collecting new and playful memories to remember on those cold winter nights. Let’s enjoy the sun!

At the end of my internship, I created a digital lookbook. The lookbook consisted of imagery taken during the spring, and articles about the spring 2017 campaign. I followed the brand guidelines to keep the layout consistent with the brands identity, but introduced a new colour. I also created a print to be used in the lookbook. I received a lot of positive feedback from the Népra team, and the lookbook was available on Népra’s website.

concept t p e c n o c
My concept and overall idea for a shoot I would like to create is: 90s-00s style group dynamic with an androgynous feel. I was inspired by Calvin Klein adverts from the 1990’s, costume design in the TVseries Freaks and Geeks and Beverly Hills 90210, as well as androgynous outfits worn by both sexes. For model casting, I would like the models to have a slightly feminine and delicate look, young boys with messy long hair. On my mood board, I have displayed a few images on what type of guys I would like cast. To further enhance the feminine qualities of these models, I would like to keep garment styling sloppy, oversized and awkward on the body, whilst maintaining focus on the menswear collections chosen to be featured.
I would really like to have the 90s-00s aesthetic to be carried out through to the photography style as well. This could be by editing the images to have an authentic film camera look to them, or shooting on 35mm film. To contrast with the models, I would like to have the photo shoot shot in a quite rough and industrial location for example Castle Gibson’s MC Motors (http://www.castlegibson.com/locations/mcmotors/) or The Film Shed in Dalston (http://www. castlegibson.com/locations/the-film-shed/) I believe this concept fits in with the BOYS BY GIRLS profile, as the main aesthetic for my idea is natural and honest looks with a 90s-00s theme. I believe this will compliment the BOYS BY GIRLS brand identity, and fit in well with their other material featured on their website and social media channels.
