letterfrompublisher “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, that they didn’t stop to think if they should.” ~ Dr. Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park
J
ust the suggestion, let alone the reality, of GMO (genetically modified organisms) Frankenfoods remind me of this line from Jurassic Park. In the movie the Malcolm character argues that the Jurassic Park scientists’ thinking was flawed by assuming they could control the forces of nature and keep laboratory dinosaurs from reproducing on their own. Nature always wins out, he counsels. In a similar fashion, Monsanto scientists have unleashed GMO crops onto an unsuspecting populace by splicing and combining different species genes to produce plants with abnormal qualities, such as resistance to certain herbicides like Roundup, manufactured by the same company. Proliferating Roundup-Ready crops depend on it. Now it turns out that nature is finding a way around this too. Farmers caught in a losing cycle report that pests and weeds are becoming resistant to the increasingly poisonous chemicals they have been using at risk to their own health, making their crops vulnerable to attack and decreasing yields. Making matters worse, when its patented seeds adulterate neighboring fields, the company sues farmers to keep them from re-planting the seeds from their own harvest. And that’s only part of this corporate monster’s horror show. More enlightened scientists from numerous leading research institutions have linked glyphosate, Roundup’s active ingredient, to birth defects in birds and amphibians and to cancer, hormone disruption, DNA damage and reproductive damage in mammals. All are good reasons why GMO foods have been banned in a number of countries, while long-term effects of consuming GMO foods remain unknown. Consumers are increasingly wary and demanding to know what is in the foods they buy. After Vermont recently passed a law requiring labeling of GMO products in their state, Monsanto and the Grocery Manufacturers Association sued to strike it down, saying it infringes on their constitutional rights. What about consumers’ rights? Winning against this corporate Goliath is vital because the legal decision will set a precedent for the country. We can all support this small David state in its effort to maintain the rights of citizens to know what is in the foods we eat (page 13). Hopeful news is embodied by revisiting a breed of natural and organic farmers and advocates hard at work to show by example how it’s possible to choose a different path and work with nature in a more sustainable system. One that provides healthier foods, maintains the health of the land and creates a more secure food supply (page 16). This month we also begin a series of articles looking at what the National Climate Assessment can tell us about preparing for the effects of climate change in the Southeast and specifically Louisiana (page 26). The national report is a compelling read. Knowledge is power and we must know that we have the power to address challenges important to us all.

ranklin Hernandez and his wife, Alisson, moved to the area ten months ago with their three year old daughter, who has cerebral palsy. After moving to the area, they searched for a support group of parents who have children with physical disabilities. Their search failed to turn up a group with the kind of function and focus they wanted, and so the couple are forming a support and networking group of parents and caretakers of children with cerebral palsy or any other physical disabilities. They would like the group to meet on a regular basis. Franklin Hernandez invites parents who are interested in sharing experiences, resources and hopes with others facing similar challenges in raising a child with physical disabilities Interested families may contact Franklin Hernandez at 305-450-4375.

Community Greens Celebrates
J
une marked the official opening of Community Greens, the commercial complex at Washington Avenue and Broad Street in New Orleans, that transformed blighted buildings into vibrant office spaces that house socially and environmentally responsible organizations. Moreover, the development of four buildings, parking lots and a courtyeard was designed and built using green building best practices. Green Coast Enterprises, the company behind the project, brought the idea to fruition with the help of many partners, including Capital Link; ASK Partnership; FirstNBC Bank; the Isaiah Fund of Bend the Arc, a Jewish Fund for Justice; the Louisiana Office of Community Development, Disaster Recovery Unit; NCB Capital Impact; the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority; federal and state historic tax credits and HUD tax credits. A grand opening on June 12 celebrated the completion of the last building, which is to serve as a community health center. The unveiling of this renovation took place with the backdrop of the tenants already established in the other three buildings, including a social innovation incubator, restaurants, offices and retail. The project aims to help grow the economy and revitalize the area, which once was a vital commercial corridor. More can be found about Community Greens and Green Coast Enterprises at GreenCoastEnterprises.com.
EPA Plan is a Win for Louisiana
T
he Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a Clean Power Plan - new carbon pollution standards for power plants, specifically older plants and coal-fired facilities. The new rules are meant to protect public health, lower electricity bills, and reduce carbon emissions. The Clean Power Plan is expected to be finalized by June 2015. Public comment on the proposed requirements will be accepted for 120 days after publication in the Federal Register and public hearings will take place in late July in Denver, Atlanta, Washington, DC and Pittsburgh. The Alliance for Affordable Energy supports the new standards as a way to boost the state’s natural gas industry and protect the coast as well as improve public health. In an email distributed June 2, Chief Executive Officer Casey DeMoss Roberts said only 12 percent of Louisiana’s electricity is derived from coal, compared to 75 percent from natural gas, so the ratepayers will not see much of a change. However, the state’s natural gas providers will likely benefit from the new rules, she wrote. The rules will avoid approximately 6,600 premature deaths; prevent about 150,000 asthma attacks in children; save up to $93 billion in public health and environmental costs; reduce electricity bills by approximately eight percent by increasing energy efficiency and reducing demand on the electric grid; and reduce carbon emissions from the sector 30 percent below 2005 levels by 2030, she reports. Decreasing emissions will ultimately reduce sea level rise, which threatens our coast – particularly State Highway 1 that connects Port Fourchon, a strategic oil hub, to the inland industrial centers. “The only way to keep sea levels manageable, our coast restoreable, and economy thriving is to limit the pollution causing the seas to rise,” Roberts concluded. For more information on the proposed EPA rules, logon to epa.gov or www.whitehouse. gov/climate-change; or to learn about the Alliance, visit www.allforenergy.org.

Sneak Attack on Dietary Supplements
A
ccording to Scott Tips, president and legal counsel for the National Health Federation (NHF), harmonized global standards are enabling overall reduced vitamin and mineral levels in pill and food form. In February, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed changes to both the current Nutrition Facts panel on food labels and Supplement Facts panel on dietary supplement labels that prompt concern. “While the food industry, media and general public focus on the proposed format changes, new wording and label design, there’s a danger to our health in the FDA harmonizing our Reference Daily Intake (RDI) of vitamin and mineral levels down to the extremely low levels of the Codex Alimentarius, which our organization has fought against for more than a decade,” advises Tips. Although a few RDIs have been raised, if the proposed rulemaking is adopted, the NHF anticipates that the FDA will work to conform other recommended nutrient values to those of Codex. Support for this projection is based on an October 11, 1995, FDA pronouncement in the Federal Register to harmonize its food laws with those of the rest of the world. The deadline for citizens to submit comments to the FDA ended on June 2, 2014, but we can still write the Division of Dockets Management (HFA-305), Food and Drug Administration, 5360 Fishers Lane, Rm. 1061, Rockville, MD 20852. Mention Docket No. FDA-2012-N-1210 and insist that the FDA cease pushing its harmonization agenda. For more information, visit Tinyurl.com/ NHFCaseForNutrients.

After ruling out his initial career choices of paleontologist, zoologist, baseball player and Good Humor ice cream man, Jerry LoFaro parlayed his lifetime interest in dinosaurs and other animals, fantasy, art history and literature into a successful career as an illustrator. His art—always striking and often humorous—has been featured on book covers for major publishers and in advertising and promotional campaigns for clients including Nike, Disney, National Geographic, The Discovery Channel and TIME magazine. Celestial Seasonings has commissioned LoFaro to create tea, coffee and seasonings package designs, even entrusting him to update the company’s famous icon, Sleepytime Bear. Recently, he was honored with a gold medal from the Society of Illustrators. “Superficially, I’d describe my work as realism,” says LoFaro. “However, much of what I’ve done in content is conceptual, with surreal flourishes.” Prior to 2002, he worked primarily with acrylics; now, he uses Photoshop to create digital art. LoFaro also treasures the rural beauty of his New Hampshire surroundings and confides, “My life revolves around walking out to my studio in the woods, listening to great music and being creative.” View the artist’s portfolio at JerryLoFaroDesigns.com.

Food Transparency Vermont Demands GMO Labeling
Vermont Senator David Zuckerman and Representative Carolyn Partridge spearheaded efforts for Vermont to pass the nation’s first unrestricted mandatory labeling bill for genetically modified organisms (GMO). The state legislature’s collective efforts, lasting more than a decade, led to an unprecedented, game-changing new law signed by Governor Peter Shumlin on April 23. Anticipating the current lawsuit by Monsanto and the Grocery Manufacturers Association, Vermont has set aside $10 million for legal fees. The Organic Manufacturers Association is working to expand funding behind Vermont’s defense because the outcome could affect all 50 states. Unless legally overturned, starting July 1, 2016, products sold in Vermont that contain more than 0.9 percent GMO content contamination will require a statement on the label indicating that genetic engineering was used. Products that contain GMOs and are labeled as such cannot also label their products as “natural”. The bill, however, does not apply to labels for milk, eggs and meat from animals fed GMOs. Super Cocktail Kills Breast Cancer Cells Researchers have hope for natural, non-toxic treatments and prevention of breast cancer By Linda Sechrist

Dr. Shailaja G. Raj, a gynecologist and reproductive endocrinology and fertility expert with a clinical practice in the greater New Orleans area, knows that for many women their greatest fear is getting breast cancer. That’s why no one could be more excited about research results published in the November 2013 Journal of Cancer – regarding a cocktail of plant compounds that killed breast cancer cells in the laboratory – unless it is her husband, Madhwa H.G. Raj PhD, who led the study at Louisiana State University (LSU) Health Sciences Center and its Stanley S. Scott Cancer Center, in collaboration with Dr.Shubha Ireland of Xavier University of Louisiana. “The ingredients in the cocktail come from foods people eat everyday, but at much higher levels than they could possibly get from their diet,” says Madhwa Raj, a research professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at LSU’s Health Sciences Center. Dr. Shailaja Raj was a co-author in the study. What the research showed was that a combination of six known protective chemical nutrients from turmeric, soybeans, broccoli, grapes and tea were more effective against cancer cells in vitro than each would be individually. Individually they were ineffective, but in combination these natural compounds killed 100% of the sample breast cancer cells without toxic side-effects to normal cells. The researchers tested other known
protective ingredients found in apples and tofu but eventually settled on the combination of the six that suppressed breast cancer cell growth by more than 80%. The resulting super-cocktail – curcumin, known as turmeric, isoflavone from soybeans, indo-3-cabinol from cruciferous plants, C-phycocyanin from spirulina, reservatrol from grapes and quercetin, a flavonoid present in fruits, vegetables, and tea also inhibited migration and invasion of cancer cells, caused cycle arrest, and triggered the process leading to cell death resulting in the death of 100% of the breast cancer cells in the samples. Madhwa Raj adds that the super anti-oxidant combination also inhibited a marker protein for metastisis and that there is nothing else in the drug realm available that has been shown to do that. “One of the primary causes of both the recurrence of breast cancer and deaths is a small group of cancer stem cells that evade therapy. These often multi-drug-resistant cells have the ability to generate new tumors, so it is critically important to develop new approaches to more effective and safer treatment or prevention of breast cancer,” notes Raj, who has served as reviewer for many medical journals including Endocrinology, International Journal of Cancer, Breast Cancer Research and others. When the research was published,

Dr. Shailaja G. Raj and Madhwa H.G. Raj PhD the researchers received many emails from around the globe requesting where the super cocktail could be obtained. It was Shailaja Raj who decided to develop a supplement to make it available now. She explains that she decided to do this, because she believes that its super anti-oxidant properties may be helpful to women now as a nutritional supplement for breast health. “The combination has been shown to work in vitro, so there is a scientific basis for the product. This combination is not available anywhere else and is a pure compound.” She started Protegene Corporation for the development of this nutritional supplement, which is available as “Breast Safeguard”, online at ProtegeneCorporation.com. She emphasizes that the supplement cannot be considered a treatment for breast cancer, nor a preventive treatment until clinical trials actually determine that. As for recommending the supplement to her own patients, she says she doesn’t push it. As she does with other medications and products, she gives her patients information and let’s them decide. According to the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER), which includes data from LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, breast cancer is the second most common cancer with 232,340 new cases estimated this year and 39,620 deaths. There are an estimated 2,829,041 women currently living with breast cancer in the United States. Shailaja G. Raj, Founder and Director of the Southern Fertility Center, has offices in Metairie, Chalmette and Luling. She may be reached at 504-322-7393 or 985-7855610. See ad on page 6.

STEWARDS OF EARTH’S BOUNTY
Organic Farmers Sow Seeds of Change by Melinda Hemmelgarn
F
rom epidemic childhood obesity and rising rates of autism and food allergies to the growing risks of pesticides and climate change, we have many reasons to be concerned about the American food system. Fortunately, many heroes among us—family farmers, community gardeners, visionaries and activists—are striving to create a safer and healthier environment now that will benefit future
generations. Recognizing and celebrating their stellar Earth stewardship in this 2014 International Year of Family Farmers, Natural Awakenings is spotlighting examples of the current crop of heroes providing inspiration and hope. They are changing America’s landscape and the way we think about the ability of good food to feed the future well.
Anna Jones-Crabtree Doug Crabtree and Anna JonesCrabtree, of Vilicus Farms, in Havre, Montana, are reviving crop biodiversity and pollinator habitat on their organic farm in northern Montana. “We strive to farm in a manner that works in concert with nature,” Doug explains. The couple’s actions live up to their farm’s Latin name, which means “steward”. They grow 15 nourishing crops on 1,200 acres, including flax, buckwheat, sunflower, safflower, spelt, oats, barley and lentils, without pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers. By imitating natural systems, planting diverse crops and avoiding damaging chemical inputs, they are attracting diverse native pollinators, he notes. Their approach to farming helps protect area groundwater, streams, rivers and even oceans for future generations.

Diana and Dick Dyer
Luverne and Mary Jo Forbord
Dick and Diana Dyer, of Dyer Family Organic Farm, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, finally realized their lifelong dream to farm in 2009, each at the age of 59. The couple grows more than 40 varieties of garlic on 15 acres; they also grow hops and care for honeybees. In addition, they provide hands-in-the-soil training to a new generation of dietetic interns across the country through their School to Farm program, in association with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Diana, a registered dietitian, teaches her students to take the, “We are what we eat” adage a step further. She believes, we are what we grow. “Like nearly everyone else, most dietetic students are disconnected from Mother Earth, the source of the food they eat. They don’t learn the vital connections between soil, food and health,” says Diana. During a stay on the Dyer farm, she explains, “The students begin to understand how their food and nutrition recommendations to others can help drive an entire agricultural system that promotes and protects our soil and water, natural resources and public health.” It all aligns with practicing their family farm motto: Shaping our future from the ground up.
Mary Jo and Luverne Forbord, of Prairie Horizons Farm, in Starbuck, Minnesota, raise Black Angus cattle, grazed on certified organic, restored, native prairie pastures. Mary Jo, a registered dietitian, welcomes dietetic students to the 480-acre farm to learn where food comes from and how to grow it without the pesticides that contribute to farmers’ higher risk for certain cancers. “We must know the true cost of cheap food,” she insists. Most recently, they planted an organic orchard in memory of their son, Joraan, who died of cancer in 2010 at the age of 23. Joraan’s orchard is home to thriving, health-supporting apple, apricot, cherry and plum trees, plus native aronia berries. It also injects fresh life into the community. Each spring, the Forbords celebrate their son’s birthday by “waking up” his orchard. His mother explains: “People of all ages gather—an assortment of our friends, Joraan’s friends and their growing families, neighbors, relatives, co-workers, students and others—to keep his legacy growing. The incredible community support keeps us going.”

Tarrant Lanier, gardening with children at the Center for Family and Community Development Tarrant Lanier, of the Center for Family and Community Development (CFCD) and Victory Teaching Farm, in Mobile, Alabama, wants all children to grow up in safe communities with access to plenty of wholesome food. After working for nearly two decades with some of South Alabama’s most vulnerable families, Lanier wanted to “provide more than a crutch.” In 2009, she established the nonprofit CFCD organization, dedicated to healthy living. Within five years, she had assembled a small, but hard-working staff that began building community and school gardens and creating collaborative partnerships. Recently, the group established the Victory Teaching Farm, the region’s first urban teaching farm and community resource center. “The farm will serve as an onsite experience for children
to learn where their food comes from and the reasons fresh, organically grown food really matters to our health,” says Lanier. However, “This is just the tip of the iceberg for us. Ultimately, we’d like to be a chemical-free community through advocating for reduction and elimination of pesticide and chemical use in schools, hospitals, households and local parks and ball fields.” Lanier aims to help improve on Alabama’s low national ranking in the health of its residents. “I love our little piece of the world, and I want future generations to enjoy it without fearing that it’s making us sick,” she says. “We are intent on having a school garden in every school, and we want to see area hospitals establish organic food gardens that support efforts to make people healthier without the use of heavy medications.” Lanier further explains: “We see our victory as reducing hunger and increasing health and wellness, environmental sustainability and repair, community development and beautification, economic development and access to locally grown food, by promoting and creating a local food system.” Don Lareau and Daphne Yannakakis, of Zephyros Farm and Garden, in Paonia, Colorado, grow exquisite organic flowers and vegetables for farmers’ markets and community supported agriculture members in Telluride and the Roaring Fork Valley. Recently, the couple decided to take fewer trips away from their children and homestead, and instead bring more people to their 35-acre family farm to learn from the land and develop a refreshed sense of community. From earthy farm dinners and elegant weddings to creative exploration camps for children and adults and an educational internship program, these family farmers are raising a new crop

Don Lareau of consumers that value the land, their food and the people producing it. The couple hopes to help people learn how to grow and prepare their own food, plus gain a greater appreciation for organic farming. “The people that come here fall into a farming lifestyle in tune with the sun and moon, the seasons and their inner clock—something valuable that has been lost in modern lifestyles,” notes Lareau, who especially loves sharing the magic of their farm with children. “Kids are shocked when they learn that carrots grow underground and surprised that milk comes from an udder, not a store shelf.” Klaas and Mary-Howell Martens, of Lakeview Organic Grain, in Penn Yan, New York, grow a variety of grains, including wheat, spelt, barley, oats and triticale, plus peas, dark red kidney beans and edamame soybeans, along with raising livestock on about 1,400 acres. Their family farm philosophy entails looking at the world through a lens of abundance, rather than scarcity, and working in cooperation with their neighbors instead of in competition. The result has been a groundswell of thriving organic farmers and a renewed sense of community and economic strength throughout their region. The Martens switched to organic farming after Klaas experienced partial paralysis due to exposure to pesticides, compounded by concern for the health of their three children. Because the Martens work in alliance with nature, they’ve learned to ask a unique set of questions. For example, when Klaas
sees a weed, he doesn’t ask, “What can we spray to kill it?” but, “What was the environment that allowed the weed to grow?”
Hear from Two Heroes
Anne Mosness, in Bellingham, Washington, began fishing for wild salmon with her father during one summer after college. The experience ignited a sense of adventure that led her back to Alaska for nearly three decades, as a crew member and then a captain in the Copper River and Bristol Bay fisheries. During that time, Mosness became a passionate advocate for protecting coastal communities and ecosystems. “Like farm families on land, fishing families face many risks and uncertainties,” but she believes, “political forces may be even more damaging to our livelihoods and wild fish.” For example, “We are replicating some of the worst practices of factory farming on land in our marine environment with diseases, parasites and voluminous amounts of pollution flushing into our coastal waters,” explains Mosness. She’s also concerned about the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s potential approval of genetically engineered (GMO) fish without adequate health and environmental assessments, and she works to support GMO labeling so consumers can make informed choices in the marketplace.

James Gormley Takes On the FDA Why the Natural Health Movement Must Protect Itself by Kathleen Barnes
J
ames Gormley, a leader of the natural health movement in the U.S. and an award-winning health journalist, is a passionate advocate for natural health. For more than 20 years, he’s been at the forefront in the fight against government restriction of dietary supplements and for transparency in the food industry, and has twice participated in America’s trade delegation to the United Nations Codex Alimentarius Commission, advocating for health freedom. Gormley’s editorial positions have included editor-in-chief of Better Nutrition and editorial director for the Vitamin Retailer Magazine Group. He now serves as both vice president and senior policy advisor for Citizens for Health and as a scientific advisory board member with the Natural Health Research Institute. His latest book, Health at Gunpoint: The FDA’s Silent War Against Health Freedom, poses a strong stance against
government interference in our rights to information about and access to healthy food and supplements.
Why do you believe that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are tainted by special interests, particularly big companies in the pharmaceutical and food industries? The FDA was created to address issues of food and drug contamination and adulteration. Dr. Harvey Wiley, the courageous first leader of its predecessor, the Bureau of Chemistry, expressed his disgust with the unintended consequences in his 1929 book, The History of a Crime Against the Food Law: The Amazing Story of the National Food and Drugs Law Intended to Protect the Health of the
People, Perverted to Protect Adulteration of Foods and Drugs. The FDA has been beholden to drug companies for decades. Making the situation worse, a 2012 law loosened conflict of interest restrictions for FDA advisory panels. That has further weakened the agency’s review system and likely allowed more drugs with safety problems to gain marketing approval, according to an analysis published in the journal Science in 2013. In addition, 40 percent of the FDA’s last budget increase came from user fees on prescription drugs paid by the pharmaceutical giants. The USDA has the potential to do much good, but is bogged down with politics and mandates to push questionable biotechnology.
With regard to the controversy over genetically modified organisms (GMO), are certain companies being given undue influence in national policy making? Yes. A perfect example was the ability of Monsanto to block initiatives requiring labeling of food products that contain GMOs in California and Washington state. Monsanto and the food industry continue to leverage their considerable influence in the U.S. Congress to block such legislation on a national level, despite the massive outcry from consumers demanding to know the identity and origin of the food we eat.

Did the FDA declare war on the natural products industry in the 1990s? The FDA conducted numerous and illegal raids on health food stores, supplement makers and practitioners. In an infamous barbaric raid on the clinic of integrative physician Dr. Jonathan Wright, in Tahoma, Washington, in 1992, agents and deputized officers converged with guns drawn, terrorizing patients and staff because Wright was giving his patients legal L-tryptophan supplements to help with sleep and mood. It was dubbed the “vitamin B-bust”. A federal grand jury declined to indict Wright on the charges stemming from the raid.
Current European Union and international codex policies maintain that most necessary nutrients can and should be obtained from foods, so they have dramatically limited the availability of many supplements. Do you expect such a policy to become part of U.S. law? These European policies fly in the face of reality and every major food study conducted since World War II. The superrefined, overly processed Western diet does not and cannot fully supply optimal levels of daily nutrients. The U.S. has made minor efforts to tread this dangerous path and been met with tremendous consumer outrage. Potential related laws and policies would have to make it past an avalanche of public comments.
What is the current status of the fight for health freedom, and what is your prognosis for the future? Substantial threats to our health freedom still exist, but I am optimistic. Three highly credible nonprofit organizations are leading the way: the Alliance for Natural Health, Citizens for Health and the National Health Federation. If consumers remain vigilant and stay informed on the issues identified by these advocates, we will be able to tackle and defeat threats to Americans’ health freedoms as they emerge. Recognizing Sustainability in Business By Colleen Morgan
T
he area’s green-minded business community gathered on May15th at the Eiffel Society for the third year to once again celebrate the winners of the Green Games, the area’s sustainable business competition. More than 200 people attended to recognize a dozen organizations for their achievements in sustainable business practices over the past year. The Best Office award went to CLEAResult, the firm that runs the New Orleans’s Energy Smart program, which saved 20 million kilowatt hours of electricity last year. In the course of making multi-unit apartment buildings more energy efficient, the discarded showerheads, faucet aerators and lightbulbs became raw materials for the artists at Unique Products, where a unique chandelier was created out of the showerheads. “We’re green, but we wanted to take it a step further – do a little more than the day to day,” said Alexander Scott, the Senior Program Manager.

ZukaBaby, a natural parenting boutique, won for Best Retail. This Magazine Street store, a veteran of the Games, carries safe and sustainable items and purchases carbon offsets for shipping. Owner Erin Pelias said these efforts have helped the bottom line, and this year, she partnered with a manufacturer of cloth diapers to implement the “Share the Love” program to provide them to families in need. “Cloth diapers are a much greener option,” she said. “This way we can help provide them to those who need them the most.” The Nattie for Best Non-Profit went to Project Lazarus, which greatly reduced energy usage in its historic stone complex in the Marigny. Replacing two HVAC systems and 41 thermostats with wireless, programmable ones allowed Facilities Manager Kathleen Welch to centralize energy use and, over six months, saved $2,800 in electricity. New Orleans Charter Math & Science High School got the top award

for Best School for its recycling program and removal of styrofoam plates from the cafeteria - together cutting the solid waste, and associated bill, by half, according to Facilities Manager Anthony Crim. He was tasked with saving money, so he researched how to reduce his big bills. And with a $10,000 grant from Keep America Beautiful, he leased a dishwasher – and dropped kitchen waste by 60 percent. Discarding everything is expensive – the new program saved $3,700 last year, Crim said. “Styrofoam is…the easiest way, but it’s not the right way.” Sarah the Pet Sitter, who won the Best Services category, admits her team was determined to win. “What we are doing is revolutionary, we wanted to set a precedent,” she said. Her team uses bicycles, recycles everything and talks to pet owners and neighbors about pet food and waste. They see it as opportunity to build up community. The new Mexican restaurant on
Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard, Casa Borrega, took home the Innovation award for the building’s transformation from a blighted property into a gem, using many recycled architectural components. Despite some struggles to get it open, owners Linda Stone and Hugo Montero created a venue for cultural events in a neighborhood with a history of integration and architectural uniqueness, located near downtown. Additional awards went to: Café Carmo for Best Restaurant; Orleans Coffee Exchange for Best Manufacturer; and The Hotel Modern for the People’s Choice Award. Stone summed up the importance of this event to the green business community. It gives recognition to folks who work really hard to do the right thing. “That’s the most important thing for anybody who wins,” she said. “It validates what you are doing.” Colleen Morgan is Environmental Editor for Natural Awakenings Southeast Louisiana. Essential Oils for Summer
Healing Fragrances for Bites, Allergies and Sunburn by Kathleen Barnes
Best Carriers Almost all essential oils are so strong that they must be diluted before use to prevent skin irritation. Use coldpressed oils and mix 10 to 15 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier substance. Some of the best carriers are almond oil, aloe vera gel, apricot oil, cocoa butter, glycerin, jojoba oil and olive oil.

“
ssential oils are not magic or folklore. There is solid science behind them,” says Elizabeth Jones, founder of the College of Botanical Healing Arts, in Santa Cruz, California. Here’s what happens after inhaling lavender, the most popular of all essential oils: The cilia— microscopic cellular fibers in the nose—transport the aroma to the olfactory bulb at the bottom of the brain, from where it proceeds to the limbic brain and
directly affects the nerves, delivering a soothing effect. “Or put it on your skin and other properties of essential oils are absorbed straight into the bloodstream,” advises Jones, author of Awaken to Healing Fragrance. Thai studies show that a whiff of lavender oil is calming and lowers blood pressure and heart rate, yet there are many more benefits attributed to the art and science of aromatherapy and essential oils. For those struggling with summer maladies, here are several simple solutions essential oils can provide.
meta-analysis from the University of Western Australia. The researchers further suggest that tea tree oil may be used in some cases instead of antibiotics. Oregano and eucalyptus oils are likewise acknowledged for their natural abilities to eliminate infection-causing bacteria, fungi and viruses. “Blend all three for a synergistic effect,” says aromatherapy expert Robert Tisserand (RobertTisserand.com), of Ojai, California. “They sort of leapfrog over each other to penetrate the skin and cell walls.”
Sunburn, Bug Bites and Poison Ivy A small amount of undiluted lavender oil will cool sunburn fast, advises Tisserand. Add a few drops to a dollop of cooling aloe vera gel for extra relief and moisture, suggests Jones. Undiluted lavender is also a great remedy for insect bites, says Tisserand. “You can stop the pain of a bee sting in 20

seconds with a few drops.” Chamomile, either the German or Roman variety, helps with rashes, according to Jones, especially when mixed with her summertime favorite, aloe vera gel. She recommends mugwort oil for poison oak or poison ivy, a benefit affirmed by animal research from the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine’s Herbal Medicine Formulation Research Group.
Allergy Relief During hay fever season, several aromatherapy oils from a diffuser can offer relief, counsels Tisserand. He recommends eucalyptus, geranium and lavender oils, all of which contain antihistamines. Use them separately or blended. When using a diffuser, it’s not necessary to put the oils into a diluting carrier oil or gel. He notes that a steam tent containing 10 drops of each of the three oils mixed with two cups of boiling water is highly effective.
Sprains, Strains and Joint Pain Lessen inflammation and the pain from tendon and muscle sprains and strains with rosemary or peppermint, adding a dash of ginger for additional benefit, says Tisserand. He recommends rubbing the oils (diluted in a carrier) directly on the sore spot. Rosemary is particularly effective for bringing blood flow to an injury site, and the menthol in peppermint is a great pain reliever, adds Jones. A Chinese study published in the European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics confirms the pain-relieving and antiinflammatory abilities of peppermint oil. Researchers from Taiwan confirm that ginger is anti-inflammatory and can even reduce intense nerve pain. Jones believes that essential oils have a place in everyone’s medicine chest. “Sometimes I feel like David up against Goliath,” she remarks. “I encourage everyone to use natural healing products from plants instead of pharmaceutical drugs, the side effects of which actually diminish the body’s natural ability to heal.” Kathleen Barnes has authored numerous books on natural health, including Rx from the Garden: 101 Food Cures You Can Easily Grow. Report Says Prepare for Climate Change What it means for Southeast Louisiana By Colleen Morgan
Sea level rise will have an impact and change the landscape along the Southeast.
O
n M ay 6 , a c o a l i t i o n o f more than a dozen federal scientific agencies released the government’s “flagship” report on climate change impacts and responses. The U.S. Global Change Research Program’s third climate change assessment – completed every four years – contains a plethora of information on the subject focused on the science and how each region of the country and various sectors are being affected. Th e 2 0 1 4 N a t i o n a l C l i m a t e A s s e s s m e n t ( N CA ) , i s t h e m o s t comprehensive document on climate change impacts in the U.S. to date. This iteration of the report is meant to
update the public on the latest trends and science surrounding climate change, and to that end it has been formatted into a website so the information is easily searched, downloadable and shared, both in English and Spanish, on tablets and phones as well as laptops. For Southeast Louisiana, the prospect is formidable: severe storms will intensify, and this region is extremely vulnerable to sea level rise because of coastal land loss. A trio of the report’s authors presented its primary findings on the Southeast region of the country in a webinar sponsored by the Union of Concerned Scientists. First and foremost, climate change is not just in the future

– it is already happening. Communities across the country are feeling the effects now, according to Dr. Fred Lipschultz, Senior Scientist of the NCA and its Regional Coordinator. “Impacts are widespread across the country and are well documented in the report,” he said, for each region as well as the coastal areas and the oceans. Secondly, the NCA projects an increase in these impacts, especially in precipitation, drought, warming, and severe weather events. The document confirms that “human activities are the primary cause,” specifically carbon emissions, Dr. Lipschultz said. “We are in control of a lot of the future scenarios, and we can greatly influence the type of climate we are going to see.” In addition, the report discusses adaptation plans and responses that communities are taking across the country, as a way to disseminate the information for other communities facing similar challenges. “There are opportunities for changing emission levels into the future,” Dr. Lipschultz said. Paul Schramm from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a lead author of the Southeast and Caribbean chapter, said this region has not experienced the sustained warming that was predicted. The region actually cooled from around 1955 to the mid 1980’s - this “Warming Hole” is being intensely studied, he said, but the cause is currently unknown. Besides that, the last two decades had considerable warming, and 2001-2012 was warmer than the previous decade. Schramm also discussed the public health implications of increases in ground level ozone, which accompanies temperature rise. Ozone, which originates from cars and industry, is “very harmful to public health,” he said, but capping this pollution would help. “There are adaptation measures that could reduce these negative impacts,” Schramm said. Schramm presented a map identifying the areas in the Southeast that are most at risk based on the “Coastal Vulnerability Index,” which combines vulnerability to sea level rise and storms and the ability to adapt to them. Virginia Beach, areas of South Florida and the entire Louisiana and Mississippi coasts were highlighted – he showed aerials of the deteriorating wetlands surrounding Isle

de Jean Charles, 60 miles south of New Orleans, as an example. “There is sinking land,” Schramm said, implicating four hurricanes in recent decades and oil and gas production as the primary culprits. The next slide highlights the importance of LA Highway 1 – recently elevated because of the subsidence – as the only road to Port Fourchon, which supports 18 percent of the nation’s oil and 90 percent of offshore oil and gas production. Researchers of this NCA devoted considerable attention to urban and energy infrastructure for the first time. This topic is of great importance in the Southeast, because it has experienced the most severe weather events since 1980, said Tom Wilbanks of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the lead author of that chapter. “It is very different to adapt to episodic events than to long term gradual changes,” he said. The energy section, whose lead authors were both from the private sector,
confirmed that extreme weather events are climate change related – the first time such a link has been made in an official document. Beyond impacts from coastal storms and flooding, the report describes how seasonal drought and heat waves increase electricity use in interior states – a concern for energy suppliers. Wilbanks presented a map of the worst case scenario regarding temperature increases in the interior of the region, showing a July Heat Index of 20 degrees higher than current. “If it were 20 degrees higher it would be very uncomfortable indeed,” he said. However, the energy sector is financially capable of responding to this impending crisis, and has taken strides in that direction in the past five years, Wilbanks said. He called out Entergy Gulf States as a leader in this movement, noting that the chapter on Climate Change Mitigation tells the story of industry response. “I have reason to think the energy

sector will respond to climate change,” he said. However, people who work outside or cannot afford air conditioning are at risk. On the other hand, climate change is a major threat to urban infrastructure, most of which is already overburdened, old and has experienced extreme events, he said, as New Orleans’ did in Katrina. Moreover, rainfall trends indicate that over time more water will fall during a smaller number of extreme events, which further threatens the drainage systems of low-lying coastal cities, including those in South Louisiana. “That trend has been increasing since the 1980s,” Wilbanks reported. “Under the current track we are on, these extreme events will occur up to five times more severe than now.” Urban infrastructure is already vulnerable, extreme events add to the stressors, they are expensive to update, and public officials don’t want to raise taxes to finance such projects, he said. But some communities have found ways to address this problem: Philadelphia’s Green City, Clean Waters program taxes new development to fund projects to turn impervious surfaces into green space. Moreover, the American Society of Civil Engineers has discussed revising engineering codes, which are not tied to taxes. To access the report, visit http://nca2014. globalchange.gov. Chia seeds contain more healthy omega-3 fats and fiber than flax or other grain seeds and are a good source of protein and antioxidants, notes Patrick Skerrett, executive editor of Harvard Health Publications. They are abundant in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plantbased form of omega-3, which combats skin inflammation and improves the skin’s texture and softness, says holistic nutritionist Melissa Diane Smith, of Tucson, Arizona.
Eggs
Eggs are nutritional powerhouses containing the most bioavailable protein for dogs. Eggs have vitamin A, which promotes cell turnover. Their zinc further supports protein synthesis and cell division, necessary for wound healing, the formation of connective tissue and skin health, according to the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements. Egg yolks provide a valuable source of biotin, effective in treating dry skin, seborrhea and itching associated with skin allergies, reports PetEducation. com, a website of veterinarians Dr. Race NOLAHealthyLiving.com
Foster and Dr. Marty Smith, owners of Foster and Smith, Inc. Avoid raw eggs, as they contain avidin, which interferes with the metabolism of biotin, fats, glucose and amino acids, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Almonds
Almonds contain the entire vitamin E family of tocopherols and tocotrienols. “Deficiency of vitamin E has been implicated in the development of certain dermatological disorders in dogs,” counsels Lee Russell McDowell, Ph.D., in Vitamins in Animal and Human Nutrition. Almonds are also an excellent source of B vitamins, copper, manganese, magnesium, zinc and bioflavonoids, with a trace of omega-3. While safe in small quantities for larger dogs, whole almonds are not easily digested and can upset the stomach and create intestinal distress. Almonds are easily ground into a powder using a blender, and almond meal is also available at many grocery stores.
Coconut
Renowned herbalist Juliette de Bairacli Levy pioneered the use of coconut in natural diets for companion animals. Raw coconut contains medium-chain, saturated fats that transform into energy and can decrease bacterial growth, irritation and inflammation, according
to naturopathic physician Bruce Fife, a certified nutritionist, doctor of naturopathy and author of The Coconut Oil Miracle.
and eight B vitamins, including thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, folic acid and biotin.
Carob
Wild Salmon
Carob, the fruit of the Ceratonia siliqua tree, is rich in natural sugars, vitamins and minerals. Free of the stimulants caffeine and theobromine found in chocolate, it’s safe for dogs and its vitamin E supports skin health. Recent research published in the Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal shows that carob also has natural antibacterial properties.
Oats
A fortifying cereal low in starch and high in mineral content, especially potassium and phosphorus, oats also harbor calcium, magnesium, B vitamins and iron. The grain’s primary benefit to skin and coat is its soluble fiber content, which also helps a dog’s gastrointestinal system to remove toxins.
Liver
Liver from grass-fed animals enhances healthy skin. Nutrients include calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, copper, vitamins A, C, D, E
ellagic acid can prevent skin cancers. The 16th-century herbalist Henry Lyte documented their use in treating skin wounds and eczema.
Sweet Potatoes
Cooked wild salmon is ripe with omega-3 fatty acids, which along with benefiting the skin and coat, appear to boost the immune system, and may assist dogs with allergies, according to the article “10 ‘People’ Foods for Dogs,” by Elizabeth Pask and Laura Scott.
Sweet potatoes can be considered a skin superfood, because they hold a high level of betacarotene (a precursor form of vitamin A) and are a good source of vitamin E. Their vitamin C content, which increases with cooking, facilitates collagen production, contributes to photoprotection, decreases photodamage and supports wound healing, according to a report by Alexander J. Michels, Ph.D., of the Oregon State University Linus Pauling Institute.
Cranberries
Cranberries contain a variety of bioactive components, including proanthocyanidins and anthocyanin antioxidants, plus the phytochemical ellagic acid. “Animal experiments show that supplementation with anthocyanins effectively prevents inflammation and subsequent blood vessel damage,” explains Northern California Registered Dietitian Marilyn Sterling, who also points to myriad studies of the antioxidant power of proanthocyanidins. Fracking Versus Food America’s Family Farm Heritage and Health at Stake by Harriet Shugarman
W
hat if farmers couldn’t confirm that what they grow and produce was devoid of toxins, cancer-causing chemicals, radioactive materials and other pollutants? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and other federal and state agencies set standards and enforce regulations to ensure what we eat is safe and that production is secure. But hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, and its accompanying infrastructure threaten this. Questions must be raised and answered before the safety of our food supply is permanently impacted.
Conditions that Demand Changes n No federal funding exists for researching the impacts of chemical contamination from oil and gas drilling and infrastructure on food and food production. n No public tests are required for what contaminants to look for because many of the 500-plus chemicals used in the fracking process are categorized as proprietary. n Minimal-to-no baseline analysis is being done on air, water and soil conditions before oil and gas companies come into a new area. n No commonly agreed distances are lawfully required between farms, farmlands, rivers, streams and water supplies in relation to oil and gas wells and their infrastructure.
Compounding Crises Harsh economic conditions, plus concerns over long-term climate changes,

including extreme weather events, have pitted neighbors against one another as farmers consider leasing their lands to oil and gas companies. More, often the riches promised do not make their way to the farmers that need them the most as American policies continue to favor megalithic agribusinesses and push farming families into unsustainable choices. Standard drilling leases rarely provide broad protections for farmers and can even eliminate their input on where roads are created and fracking machinery is installed on their property, all of which can hamper normal farming. In Pennsylvania, where fracking is commonplace, thousands of diesel trucks drive by working farms daily, compounding problems already associated with 24/7 vibrations, noises, emissions and light pollution, stressing both humans and farm animals. In New York, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Ohio, farmers that have or are near such leased land are finding it increasingly difficult to obtain mortgages, re-mortgage property and acquire or renew insurance policies. Caught up in a vicious cycle, some farmers feel forced to abandon their farms, thus opening up more land to oil and gas companies. “Fracking is turning many rural environments into industrial zones,” observes Jennifer Clark, owner of Eminence Road Farm Winery, in New York’s Delaware County. She notes that we often hear a lot about the jobs fracking might create, but we hear little about the agricultural jobs being lost or the destruction of a way of life that has been integral to America’s landscape for generations. Asha Canalos, an organic blueberry and heirloom vegetable farmer in Orange County, New York, is among the leaders

in the David versus Goliath battle pitting farmers and community members against the Millennium Pipeline Company and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. On May 1, oral arguments were heard in the U.S. Court of Appeals. According to Canalos, “Our case could set a national precedent, with all the attending legal precedent, that will either empower other farmers and communities like ours and Minisink or will do the opposite.” In January 2013, more then 150 New York chefs and food professionals sent a letter to Governor Mario Cuomo calling for a ban on fracking in their state. As of December 2013, more then 250 chefs have signed on to the Chefs for the Marcellus campaign, which created the petition. In April 2014, Connecticut chefs entered the fray by launching their own petition to ban the acceptance of fracking waste in Connecticut. In California this past February, farmers and chefs banded together to present Governor Jerry Brown with a petition calling for a moratorium on fracking, stating that fracking wastes huge amounts of water. The previous month, California had declared a statewide drought emergency, and by April and Brown had issued an executive order to strengthen the state’s ability to manage water. Ironically, existing California regulations don’t restrict water use by industrial processes, including fracking, which uses and permanently removes tremendous amounts of water from the water cycle. To date, fracking in California operates with little state regulation. It’s past due for a “time out” on oil and gas production and infrastructure development. Every citizen needs to think carefully and thoughtfully about what’s at stake as outside interests rush to use extreme forms of energy extraction to squeeze the last drops of fossil fuels from our Mother Earth. Activist Harriet Shugarman, a veteran economist and policy analyst and former representative for the International Monetary Fund at the United Nations, currently chairs regional environmental committees and works with national, state and local organizations seeking pro-environmental legislation.

PHOTON GENIUS
Please return your hearts and lives to God. We need to remember our Health is like a four legged stool - Spiritual, Mental, Emotional & Physical; the stool’s stability is dependent on the balance of all four legs. God is Love. Love thrives because it is a Gift from God and has the power to destroy evil. Love is so important for with love, one can defeat evil but without love, evil spreads. Love is not selfish. Love is generous, forgiving and untainted by the sin of pride. You must ask God, every day, for the Gift of Love and when you are given this, use it as your armor against hatred. Love, when present in a pure soul, attracts hatred from those souls who have banished God from their lives. They cannot bear the Light of God, which shines from the souls of those who are filled with God’s Love. Where there is love, there is the Presence of God. The Evil One is incapable of love, but instead is self-obsessed with what he believes to be his power and greatness. When he infests souls, the first thing he does is to destroy love within the soul. When he achieves this, he will instill a terrible hatred in that soul and it is this hatred which causes division. Division and disagreements, inspired by hatred, can lead to desperate deeds carried out by one soul against another. These hate-filled deeds can very often lead to terrible cruelty and even murder. The sin of pride is instilled in souls, who open themselves up to the devil and this leads to ruthless ambition and greed. Go now in the knowledge that Love must be used to help the souls of all those who are in great need of God’s mercy. Please recite this Crusade Prayer for the Gift of Love.
