NCPA offers a college preparatory program that supports students in becoming independent and collaborative learners through active observation, research, negotiation, evaluation and planning. We believe success is defined by strong character based on self- discipline, responsibility, integrity and respect for differences. A HOLISTIC & RESEARCH-BASED MODEL NCPA is a school of innovation in China. Our English immersion program and emphasis on researchbased practices are what distinguishes us from any other international-style school serving Chinese nationals. NCPA is one of two catalyst schools of International Schools Services World Language Initiative: English as an Additional Language (EAL) Pilot Program. We use Stanford University’s Six Principles of English Language Learning as the foundational framework of the immersion model.
NEGOTIATORS
Faculty and staff members are recruited from all corners of the globe and hold credentials in their areas of assignment. NCPA has 55 faculty members including 18 Bachelor Degrees, 33 Masters Degrees, and 4 Doctorate Degrees.
ACCREDITATION We are accredited through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). ACADEMIC PROGRAM AND CURRICULUM English is the instructional language for all classes except Chinese Literature. Teachers across the disciplines use research-based approaches and embedded language learning strategies to enable student to access grade level content while helping them to develop academic English proficiency. The school curriculum is based on U.S. standards including the Common Core, and grounded in Marzano, Schmoker and Conley's best practice research. All assessment and instructional activities integrate Conley’s four “Standards for Success”, adopted as the school-wide learner goals: § Examine/read graphics and text to interpret information and draw conclusions; § Support arguments with evidence; § Resolve conflicting views encountered in source documents or experiments; § Solve complex problems with no obvious answer. HOLISTIC EDUCATION Our holistic curriculum includes more than 15 electives in the art and music departments. NCPA’s mandatory extra-curricular programs include daily Advisory blocks as well as After School Activities (ASAs). Through Advisory and ASA, each student is involved in activities that focus on cultivating lifelong healthy habits; social, personal and interpersonal skills; and connectedness to faculty and peers. ASA offerings include a wide range of clubs and sports (competitive and intramural) purposefully designed to offer students various opportunities to practice and explore skills outside the academic context. ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES 10th graders are permitted to enroll in AP Statistics, while 11th and 12th graders are expected to enroll in 2-3 AP courses each year. ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING NCPA is a Standards-Based reporting school where teachers assess subject knowledge and skills via a set of benchmarks and standards across the academic year. Official report card marks are given at the end of each semester. As a research-based assessment that measures skills mastery, Standard-Based grading scale does not equate to traditional 4.0 GPA scale. The following is our standards-based grading scale: Exemplary - Proficient - Approaching - Not Yet Approaching Our expectation is that students work to reach “Proficient”. Quintile % of Proficiency § Exemplary (E) – Students demonstrate consistent and thorough understanding of Range or Exemplary the required knowledge and skills with the ability to apply them faultlessly in a (N=13) Scores variety of situations and to independently go above and beyond the standard. 1st >90% *A level of Exemplary is very difficult to achieve. 2nd >78% § Proficient (P) – Students demonstrate mastery of the content standards and are 3rd >65% able to perform and demonstrate that mastery across the subject. 4th ≥50% § Approaching (A) – Students demonstrate partial mastery of essential knowledge 5th <50% and skills and are sometimes able to meet the standards or requires teacher support. § Not Yet (N) – Students demonstrate limited achievement and little or no understanding of the content and skills.
