Letter from the Chamber

Nantucket Stroll Weekend was founded on the premise of helping our local businesses thrive throughout the holiday season by encouraging shopping, dining and enjoying local offerings. Now in its 47th year we couldn’t be more proud, as your Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce, to welcome you back to experience our enchanted holiday season. Partake in world class lodging, dining, and shopping, all while remembering the reason for the season. We ask that you keep in mind that we have all endured some difficult times and we are stronger because we stuck together. So be kind this holiday season and remember to be respectful of our business’ wishes for entering and enjoying their spaces. Don’t forget your masks while on public transportation, this includes the ferries, buses and airlines. Things might be slightly different this year but we are so happy to have you back in person, in our happy place. We look forward to welcoming you!

Draft statement on erosion project a road map to moving forward By Brian Bushard bbushard@inkym.com

Above all else, the Select Board wants to “avoid endless wrangling,” and “spend town and citizen time and resources wisely” when it comes to protecting Baxter Road from erosion, according to a draft position statement released Monday. When it comes to the Sconset Beach Preservation Fund’s current Courtesy of Kipper Hughes 950-foot geotextile tube project HELPING HAND: A Holdgate Partners at excavator operated by Erik Hughes helps refloat the Poco Loco, the base of Sankaty Bluff, however, which ran aground on Fisherman’s Beach Saturday night. retaliation from their peers, according to an article last week in the student newspaper Veritas. The story was a gut punch for high-school principal Mandy Vasil and assistant principal Jennifer Psaradelis, to read that some students don’t feel that reporting these behaviors is worth the trouble. “I’m not happy about it,” Vasil said. “Our main goal is to have students feel comfortable and safe in our schools.” The story, written by Veritas editor-in-chief Sarah Swenson, outlines instances that include racist and homophobic graffiti – slurs and swastikas – in the student bathrooms, as well as students being teased and taunted for their appearance and dress. It said that only a handful of these incidences were reported.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has introduced legislation that would establish ports of entry in Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard and other East Coast Democratic strongholds to process undocumented immigrants attempting to cross the southern border. In a statement released Tuesday, Cruz said Texas border communities are “struggling to deal with a massive influx of illegal immigrants.” “That’s why today I am introducing this crucial legislation to alleviate the massive overload at

Our job is to make sure students feel safe in coming forward and to know that we as administrators will act with urgency and immediacy to address those issues,” she said.
