Nantucket’s myriad lodging accommodation options run the gamut from an acclaimed Relais & Chateaux waterfront hotel and hotel named to the uppermost echelon of Tripadvisor’s ratings to small, rustic home-like bed &
breakfasts where one truly feels like he or she is visiting family! Considering that Nantucket was settled in the 17th century, one naturally expects a wide array of architecture and, on Nantucket, architectural buffs are never disappointed. Many smaller properties are in grand former residences of sea and whaling captains, renowned and wealthy merchants, ministers, judges and other historic personages, many of whom have left their essences. In these older structures, the workmanship, attention to detail, secret compartments and hiding places, hand-cut wood floors and woodwork illuminate the magnificent sense of style which has always been characteristic of this storied isle. But lodging establishments evolving from period buildings does not preclude the latest in modern conveniences and technology. With more than 800 pre-Civil War structures throughout Nantucket, one can be assured that there will be something quite distinctive about his or her lodging choice!
The first arrival in Nantucket is memorable! Disembarking the ferry or gradually acclimating to the island’s unsullied beauty and stunning architecture in a taxi from the airport, the wonder is pervasive. Meticulously preserved and restored properties in abundance have, along with public structures and edifices, ensured that the entire island is a National Historic Landmark. This, America’s most perfectly preserved seaport, beckons exploration and discovery. These period homes turned lodging establishments have been cherished and modernized discreetly, so nearly all the hallmarks of each building’s provenance remain perfectly preserved. In many, the furnishings are period while, in others, contemporary interpretations of classic furnishing styles complete the illusion that one has walked ‘back in time’ to another era.
Being an innkeeper is not a job — one is called to it. Nantucket’s innkeepers are fountains of information, hospitality and care — island history, best place for lobster, how to get a dinner reservation, which boutique is running a sale on cashmere, directions to secret places to ‘pop the question.’ The warmth of their interaction with guests is evident from arrival to departure. Perhaps this explains why many Nantucket fans stay at the same property, year after year, for decades, a lifetime and even generations! Innkeepers and other hosts are quite in tune with their guests’ needs and desires, because quite often these relationships have grown over a lifetime of island stays. But even an inaugural visit can be unforgettable, the beauty of Nantucket, the charm or grandeur of your ‘Nantucket home’ and the warmth and thoughtfulness of a host.
While guests are 30 miles at sea, remote from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, innkeepers help their guests unwind and ensure that their stays will become yet more happy memories providing refuge during the Nor’easter, hurricane, fender bender or bad day at the office. So, come once, and you will return — again and again. This place, this Nantucket, endures.
RESERVATIONS: Early advance reservations will ensure confirmed accommodations, especially in the summer season. Many properties have strict reservation cancellation policies. Please
review the policy before booking your room.
Even on the busiest weekends, spontaneous travelers may be able to book a last minute Nantucket getaway. There is no need to bring a car to the island for short term stays. Most lodging establishments are within easy walking distance of beaches, restaurants, museums, churches, galleries and shops; some further out of town provide a shuttle service for their guests. In addition, the year-round Nantucket Regional Transit Authority has numerous shuttle buses to take you to the more remote areas of the Island, beaches and shopping.
STORM POLICY: If the ferries operate we expect guests to arrive as planned whether or not they planned to arrive by ferry or plane. Once ferry service resumes, guests are expected to arrive for the balance of their reservation. Travel delays, missed connections from airports, medical or any other travel issues will not merit credits or refunds. These potential unforeseen problems are best addressed with travel insurance which we highly recommend. Many properties have strict reservation cancellation policies. Please
review the policy before booking your room.
MINIMUM STAY: Many establishments have minimum stay requirements, particularly for weekends and peak season. However, some do accept one night reservations in advance, and it is often possible to obtain lodging on short notice. The Nantucket Visitor Services and Information Bureau at 25 Federal Street, 508 228-0925, maintains a listing of daily availability on their website: www.visitnantucketisland.org.
DEPOSITS AND REFUNDS: Because of Nantucket’s unique location, most visitors make precise travel plans and confirm their lodging in advance. If a confirmed reservation is canceled, it may not be possible to re-book the room. Therefore, our lodging members subscribe to a strict and businesslike deposit and cancellation policy similar to the following: For three nights or less, full pre-payment may be required at the time of booking. For longer stays, a 50% deposit may be required at the time of booking, with balance due on arrival. Deposits (less 10% services fee) will usually be refunded if notice of cancellation is received at least 15 days before expected arrival. If a cancellation is received less than 15 days prior to arrival, deposits, (less 10% service fee) may be refunded if the room is re-booked for the entire canceled period. Some

Nantucket lodging establishments often receive requests for group reservations such as weddings, reunions, anniversary celebrations, and groups traveling together. For group reservations, Nantucket’s lodging establishments generally subscribe to a common practice of advance group reservations being guaranteed and prepaid. In order to provide assurance to both the lodging facilities and the parties that book large numbers of rooms. The following policies apply: Full payment is required with 30-day notice to cancel, with a 10% cancellation fee. In the event that there is a shortening or cancellation of a reservation less than 30 days from the arrival date, the advance payment may be non-refundable.
