Biking Routes
One of the best ways to tour Nantucket is by bicycle. The island is only 14 miles long by 3.5 miles wide with over 32 miles of bike paths. A dedicated cyclist can bike around the entire island in a day. Visit www.wheelsheelsandpedals.com for more information on biking and walking Nantucket.
1 SURFSIDE BIKE PATH: Approximately 2.2 miles along flat terrain. This path begins at Atlantic Avenue and Vesper Lane and ends at Surfside Beach.
2 MILESTONE BIKE PATH: Approximately 6 miles with gentle hills. This path begins at Milestone Rotary and leads to ’Sconset. 3 CLIFF ROAD BIKE PATH: Approximately 1.2 miles with rolling terrain. This path begins at Sherburne Turnpike and continues along Cliff Road to the Madaket Bike Path.
4 EEL POINT/DIONIS BEACH BIKE PATH:
Approximately 0.9 miles with gentle hills. This path connects the Cliff Road/Madaket bike paths to Dionis Beach.
5 OLD SOUTH ROAD BIKE PATH:
Approximately 1.5 miles through some open space and residential areas. This path begins at the Milestone Rotary and ends at Airport Road. Approximately 0.2 miles from the Nantucket Memorial Airport. 6 MADAKET BIKE PATH: Approximately 5.5 miles with gentle hills and winding terrain. This path begins at the intersection of Quaker and Madaket roads. 7 POLPIS BIKE PATH: Approximately 8 miles with various size hills and winding terrain. This path, accessible from the Milestone Bike Path near the intersection of Milestone and Polpis roads, continues along Polpis Road to just outside ’Sconset.
8 FAIRGROUNDS ROAD BIKE PATH:
Approximately 0.9 miles along residential areas. This path connects the Old South Road and Surfside Road Bike Paths.
9 MILESTONE CONNECTOR BIKE PATH:
Approximately 0.3 miles through open space. This path connects Old South Road and Milestone Road Bike Paths.
10 NOBADEER FARM ROAD BIKE PATH:
Approximately 0.7 miles through open space and flat terrain. Path ends across from the Strong Wings driveway, near the next connector, approximately 0.50 miles from Old South Road.
11 HUMMOCK POND ROAD BIKE PATH:
Approximately 2.5 miles of mostly flat terrain winding through some open space and some residential areas from Hummock Pond Road and Milk Street intersection to the parking lot entrance at Cisco Beach.
12 BARTLETT ROAD BIKE PATH:
Approximately 1.1 miles of mostly flat terrain from the intersection of Surfside Road past residential areas and ending at Raceway Drive, approximately 0.6 miles southeast of Hummock Pond Road Bike Path at Somerset Lane.
Coskata Coatue Wildlife Refuge
When English and other settlers arrived on Nantucket in the early 17th century, they found Wampanoag native people already living there. Their existences were peaceful, and the settlers left the Wampanoag to conduct their fishing, hunting, and planting in the area now comprising this Refuge, in the northern part of the island.
There exists a magical five-mile beach and expanses of savannah and uplands on the northern side of Nantucket. The entire area (1,452 acres in all) comprises four magnificent parcels of land: Trustees of Reservations’ Coskata Coatue Wildlife Refuge; Nantucket Conservation Foundation’s Haulover and Coatue Wildlife Refuge; and US Fish & Wildlife Service’s Nantucket National Wildlife Refuge at Great Point.
It may be a mouthful to say, but Coskata Coatue Wildlife Refuge [pronounced ‘co-skate-uh coatoo’] is one of Nantucket’s most pristine habitats, providing refuge for considerable wildlife and fauna within its benevolent environs. Comprising two long slender peninsulas, one can often find visitors here throughout the year.
This protected habitat offers hundreds of ospreys, double-crested cormorants, and other rare sea birds within a huge expanse of ideal terrain for nesting, mating and foraging for food, which makes each visit exciting. Coatue Wildlife Refuge is a summer home for many rare, nesting bird species including American oystercatchers, piping plovers, least terns as well as songbirds like the saltmarsh sparrow, ground-nesting northern harriers, herons and egrets.
A barrier beach protects Head of the Harbor, Nantucket Harbor and even Polpis Harbor beyond Quaise Point. This tract also features three remote and fascinating beaches, namely Coatue and Coskata Beaches facing Nantucket Sound and Great Point Beach, facing the Atlantic. The long slender peninsula which is a barrier beach to Nantucket Harbor has a distinctive ‘scalloped’ look on the inner Harbor portion, resulting from the play of the tides and waters of Nantucket Harbor. The second, north-oriented peninsula is slender until its end, where it widens to accommodate iconic Great Point Lighthouse.
This entire coast comprises one of the most exposed beaches to sea level rise and climate change in the Commonwealth. The terrain includes a large stretch of dunes provide space for bayberry, heather beach plum and a variety of beach grasses. On the opposite inner shore, one finds a rare red cedar savannah, the largest in New England, and a favorite habitat for deer. Along the seemingly endless stretches of beach, find plentiful horseshoe crabs, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds riding thermals above the surf. Gray and harbor seals feed on fish and invertebrates at Great Point’s and often haul-out nearby (do not approach seals). This is also a wonderful place for dog walking (no dogs 1 April 1 to 15 September).
The Refuge is open to the public year-round without admission fees for pedestrians and boaters. Off road vehicles require permits, guided tours are offered daily (April-mid-October). The three-hour 4x4 over sand vehicle tour, instructs about the Refuge’s plants and wildlife. Seasonal portable toilets are available at the Wauwinet Gatehouse and Great Point Lighthouse. Practically every art form —on canvas or board, sculpted, on a potter’s wheel, baskets woven from oak, from the loom with wool, cashmere, silk or other fabric, created from gold, silver, or platinum and set with jewels, set on a stage, opera set or big screen and all other means — all these arts are practiced on Nantucket.
Lonely sailors, on watch for weeks or months on lightships and other vessels, wove small oak baskets now exhibited at the Smithsonian. Today, these iconic baskets have been reimagined in sterling silver and 22 karat gold. Nantucket Lightship Baskets spawned an eponymous museum, now part of the Nantucket Historical Association. Lightship baskets are found in many Nantucket homes; reincarnated as pocketbooks, these baskets now grace ladies’ arms and has spawned weavers who teach, sell and display lightship baskets.
Galleries and craft studios are absolute joys to visit as the art, clearly inspired by the island, found far and wide across Nantucket. How could any painter, regardless of medium, possibly resist the island’s hallowed ethereal light? Ceramic pottery and tiles, oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings, the most sumptuous woven blankets, throws, carpets have become hallmarks of the well-outfitted home. Take a photography tour, take in a lecture, attend a musical, play, dance festival, poetry reading, flower show.
It is easy to imagine how Nantucket began its ascendance as an arts and cultural destination. A princely ransom of beauty has filled Nantucket to overflowing with inspiration for art, in nearly all its forms. This culture evolved from an equally enlightened, educated and instinctually talented population, either born or drawn here. Starting with kindly Wampanoags, followed by immigrants from the Azores (who manned whaling vessels around the globe), seamen wrote and sang sea shanties to music played on concertinas in Nantucket harbor or on the high seas hunting whales. These were the stirrings of Nantucket’s tilt toward the arts, and the culture which accompanied it on the island over the centuries.
The performing arts are alive and well here, with several acting troupes, and dazzling Nantucket Dreamland, venue for various performances, lectures, celebrity appearances and the Met LIVE! There are artist-in-residence programs for those honing skills or learning a new one. High-end antiques and arts auctions draw serious collectors from just about everywhere! Nantucket Historical Association with its signature Whaling Museum plus a few dozen prestigious historic homes and places of immense significance and beauty. The Shipwreck & Lifesaving and Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum (now part of NHA) are musts for every visitor! Most summer evenings (and, throughout the year) theater productions are presented by Theatre Workshop of Nantucket, Children’s Theatre, Dreamland Theater, White Heron Theatre Company, as well as traveling companies. A bevy of fascinating festivals is devoted to the arts, literature and poetry, comedy, film, wine, and dance; they draw many visitors, movie stars, celebrities and movers and shakers during the summer and autumn. Several festivals showcase up-and-coming writers and comedians, as well as screenwriters.

As Julia Child observed “The only time to eat diet food is while you’re waiting for the steak to cook.” Nantucket’s cuisine is a fitting match to its excellence in everything else. From fresh seafood and continental fare to French, Thai, Italian continental haute cuisine at its Relais & Chateaux property and, the other end of the spectrum, visitors can find clam shacks, scrumptious sandwiches enjoyed at picnic benches under shade trees, sushi, beach clambakes and BBQ. Summer visitors should make dinner reservations two weeks in advance to ensure seating at a time of year when everyone just seems hungriest!
Fresh fish includes bluefish and striped bass, sometimes caught just hours before it is served at local restaurants. Small and sweet Nantucket Bay Scallops, which grow and are harvested in the eel grass in Nantucket Bay, are sometimes called ‘Nantucket candy.’ Super-fresh fish is served alongside island-grown vegetables from small farms across the island as well as islanders’ backyards. Nantucket’s venerable Bartlett’s Farm has a wide selection of fresh produce (in addition to prepared takeaway and prepared foods) which can be bought at the Farm or from its vintage vegetable truck found daily summer days on Main Street. For a small island, Nantucket’s bounty of fresh seafood and glorious produce ensure spectacular fresh meals from local ingredients which make the experience even more unforgettable. Local fruits — cranberries, beach plums, blueberries and Concord grapes are indigenous to Nantucket and make superb jellies and confections and are also used in entrees, cakes, muffins, scones and in salads.
The renowned Nantucket Wine & Food Festival (May) has grown in esteem, now attracting regional domestic and international foodies, oenophiles, chefs, and patrons. Artisanal and gourmet bakeries, chocolatiers, amazing BBQ, sushi, and then there is Cisco Brewers —a brewery, vineyard and distillery and one of Nantucket’s coolest spots to chill and savor craft beer, live music, and events year-round.
Sustainable Nantucket’s Nantucket Grown™ Food Festival debuted in 2016; this unique, food-focused event brings farmers, chefs, fishermen, brewers, beekeepers, and artisanal food producers and offers a series of “fun, food, and educational” happenings tailored to all age groups, highlighted by a tres-popular four-course Nantucket Grown™ dinner. Autumn’s seasonal Farmers’ & Artisans’ market Downtown showcases the bounty of local growers and artists.
Last summer a new signature restaurant, Sister Ship debuted at Faraway Nantucket hotel; this restaurant, cafe, and relaxed cocktail club, offers sophisticated cocktails and a wide range of seafood and Mediterranean dishes, incorporating New England seafood and local ingredients.
