OCAD SATELLITE DESIGN SCHOOL HEXION

HEXION THE HEXION proposal for the OCAD Satellite building takes a new approach to the creative learning environment by designing spaces which adapt and respond to the users. This is achieved by not so tightly regulating the form of spaces and their extents. By following each program to mix with its surrounding facility spaces, the collaborative nature of learning is nurtured into an over arching theme of the building.

The Architecture Centre of Toronto is intented to bring in the acknowledge of contemporary architecture both within the city of Toronto and internationally. The building presents an openness to the city through its connection with the context with curated views. The building is designed to express architecture through its essense of materality, form and spatial qualities. The buiilding’s trasparency and lightness in massing with a central atrium creates an effect of a glowing lantern at night, complimenting its surrounding activities and urban life of the city of Toronto.

GRANGE PARK PAVILION 19

The Grange Park Pavilion is an urban park pavilion located at the Grange Park behind the AGO, its form deriven was inspired by Frank Gehry’s iconic curved staircase, bringing this symbolic contrast to the urban park by creating a structural curve made with cortan steel panels in which provides visitors with comfort resting seating areas attched in each zones. The pavilion is divided intwo three different zones from public to private; for the choices of community engagement, semi gathering and interaction, as well as a private meditation space.

The site is located at the intersection of Gerrard St and Mutual St. The design intent of the building is to create an entry and connection point for the community where housing and social activities create a platform for the homless and the locals to interact. By incorporating green spaces and landscaping design, the building contributes as a landmark where people can relate to both social and environmental initiative. At the same time, the building provides a relaxing and healthy environment for the homeless youth. The building focuses on the idea of an open concept for the interioras well as providing a visual connection between different facilities and outdoor spaces. Overall, the building facilitates a healthy environment that educates the homeless youth, and guides them to a path of a new beginning.

The OCAD University Satelliate building introduces a new block typology to allow for a variety of spatial configurations. As a news-centric generation, the OCAD building features the flux and mobility of the contemporary trend. The idea of shift plays a significant role in this industrial junction, therefore, it became the focus of the design which demonstrates a paradigm shift that embraces the transcience in today’s culture and life in an age that worshios change. This is revealed through the shifts in trend, technology, material and the overall industrial evolution of the maker’s space, in which reflects the cultural and industrial development of the surrounding neighbourhood.

FRAKTUR

FRAKTUR explores expansion and contraction and how these ideas can be used to make a static room come alive. FRAKTUR breathes life into an otherwise dark and confined space. It may evoke fear, claustrophobia, curiosity, or maybe even comfort as visitors enter the room. As soon it senses the presence of a wanderer, the walls begin to breathe revealing glowing cracks in its jet black skin. One may feel as if they had entered into the belly of a beast as the walls close in an slowly pulsate with light. Inspiration was drawn from the mechanics of organic beings and the sensation of breathing that is naturally associate with life. These ideas were then translated into a physical assembly using readily available materials. The backbone or structure behind the installation is a simple shelf that was custom made to house its lungs being a fan attached to a plastic balloon. A motion sensor triggers the balloon to inflate causing theskin to expand and cracking its scales.

The installation was chosen by the juror as the 2019 design award by Design TO, as well as Toronto Life, and other design medias.

NEST

NEST is driven by the idea of creating a space of comfort and introspection within a system of complexity and disarray. The overwhelming nature of information and everyday life is expressed through the chaotic texture and asymmetrical form of the installation. Composed of modular cells that contain a weave of colourful webs, NEST provides both shelter and playful moments of light and shadow within the space. The interior experience allows the visitor to momentarily step away from the noise, pause, and view the world through a clear lens.
