Abide: Napa's Cannabis Sommelier

Abide Proprietors and General Manager: (from L to R) Micah Malan, Ty Heldt, Kaleena Quarles, Jerred Kiloh and Amos Flint
Wine varietals are derived and defined by terroir and appellation, and they feature distinct smells, tastes, and textures. So too is cannabis.
Just as wine can serve as instrumental to a relaxed lifestyle, so can cannabis. This plant, so often misunderstood and maligned, is the heart of Abide, a new downtown Napa dispensary that seeks to educate and heal through its various services.
Micah Malan, Amos Flint, Ty Heldt, and Jerred Kiloh opened their downtown dispensary with the goal of providing the community with organic pain relief and educational services in an upscale boutique setting. The four, each a wine country native, bring a wealth of varied experience to their venture, including Kiloh’s proprietorship of award-winning Los Angeles dispensary The Higher Path. But their common denominator is farming; having grown up surrounded by the agricultural bounty of wine country has provided each of them a deep understanding of what it takes to organically grow and nurture crops of the highest quality.
Their mission with Abide is simple: provide customers with a warm and welcoming environment in which they can explore superior cannabis products, sold at a fair price and dispensed by compassionate, professional, and knowledgeable staff that understand not only the medicinal properties of each strain, but also the terroir variations and terpenes.
“We hope to be for cannabis what the Napa Valley wineries are to wine,” said Malan. “We are your cannabis sommeliers, providing the best in both education and product. We consider Abide to be a perfect complement to the fine wine and high-end culinary options found in wine country.
“Our belief is that relief can be found naturally, from a plant grown in the ground. We take an honest, authentic approach to cultivating, dispensing, and educating. We believe in helping customers find the right delivery system and dosage for their needs and the symbiotic relationship between the human cannabinoid and the plant cannabinoid. Educating and guiding patients to their perfect cannabis product is our ultimate goal.”
Abide products include extracts, edibles, tinctures, vapes, and topical creams and ointments, variations of which are often used to treat a wide variety of conditions, including but not limited to general pain, nausea, muscle spasms, appetite loss, and mental health conditions. Most of Abide’s products are listed in the company’s online store, and compassionate Abide staff are also available for consultations and can recommend the best formulations for each customer.

Maybe you have other priorities to deal with or you you can commit to this purpose without disrupting your retirement planning and current living needs. When you have that figure, consider your other priorities. Are there any lifestyle changes you may need to make in order When a family business is involved, notes Schmieder, it’s possible that your relatives don’t understand the company’s financial limitations. “Not everyone may be aware, for instance, that company owners have an obligation to reinvest money sense The Pursuit of Happiness: that conversation is critical to have. And begin thinking about on their own. ensure that you will have a comfortable cushion for gifts or loans.By Lisa Margeson, head of retirement client experience and communication, Merrill Having a plan in place that you’ve put together as a family can free everyone up to focus on each other, instead of worrying about where the money will come from should you, or an aging parent or spouse, fall ill. “The best time to talk about these matters is before you need to,” notes Cynthia Hutchins, director of financial gerontology at Bank of America. Below are four questions to help you start having these important family talks with your spouse, your children, your parents and your siblings. Use them to share your expectations with your family. Consult your financial advisor about ways to prepare financially for the healthcare costs that may occur. And keep talking as years go by and circumstances change. While no one can know the future, being prepared for what might come next can make the road ahead easier. Here are four questions that can help you start having these important family conversations. 2. WILL OUR PARENTS HAVE THE CARE THEY NEED AS THEY GROW OLDER? Many people struggle with aging parents’ unwillingness to face their limitations. That’s why it can be wise to bring up these issues early. Ask specific questions like: At what point would it make sense for you to stop driving, or to have a caretaker come in to help with the meals? Kate Wilber, professor of gerontology at the University of Southern California — Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, says. “Often, at first, you’ll be rebuffed. This will likely take more than one conversation.” 3. WHO WILL PROVIDE THE CAREGIVING, IF IT IS NEEDED? Hutchins recommends that siblings should talk among themselves about how they’ll share the caregiving role. “You want to be sure that both your parents and your own needs are considered. Sometimes it makes sense to cobble how you want to pass on your legacy — financial and otherwise. Investing involves risk. There is always the potential of losing money when you invest in securities. Naturally, you’ll always want to be there for your family members when they need you, but there are times when it does make sense to politely say no, even to those closest to you. If you’re considered “the bank” in your family, here are four useful tips. Four Rules of the Family Bank 1. Start talking about money with your children when they are young. “Set up regular family meetings to discuss life skills, including the earning, saving, spending, investing and sharing of money. What role does money play in your family’s life? How do your financial decisions express your family’s values?” says Stacy Allred, head of the Merrill Center for Family Wealth™. “From a young age, encourage children to ask questions about the decisions you’re making so that they can begin to understand the reasoning behind them and develop sound money management habits of their own.” With that background, they may have more realistic expectations if they do someday find themselves in a financial bind and consider asking you for help. 2. Create a budget for giving. Even if you pass on your own sound money management habits, there are bound to be times when relatives will need your help, and you’ll want to be in in retirement. 3. Set firm guidelines for saying yes. Decide in advance under what circumstances you would feel comfortable giving or lending money. “If you’re going to make a gift of the money, think about using the occasion as a teaching moment,” suggests Hunter. Without sounding preachy or judgmental, try to explain to your relative how you’ve put yourself in a position to provide this assistance. Have you kept your debt under control, for instance, or lived within your means or avoided high-interest credit cards? “For young adults in the family, this could be a valuable lesson,” he says. “If you expect to be paid back, create a loan document,” recommends Joe C. Schmieder, principal consultant of the Family Business Consulting Group. This may include details on how frequently repayments will be made and whether interest will be charged. If the family member has asked you to invest in a business, request a business plan or other formal details on how the money will be used. “It’s important that the recipient understands your terms,” Hunter says. 4. When you must say no, avoid making it personal. Instead of blaming family members for their financial troubles or questioning their plans, As you consider each request, it’s always important to remember that gifts or loans to family members will have a direct impact on your retirement planning. There might be an unwritten fifth rule, says Hunter: “Beware of being overly generous, or you could end up needing financial help yourself.” For more information, contact Merrill Lynch Financial Advisor Eric Gonzales in the Napa, CA, office at 707.254.4606 or eric_gonzales@ml.com. There are 75 million early adults in America, with 4 million turning 18 and entering early adulthood each year. They make up one-third of the workforce, so their financial health is something that can affect not just themselves but the economy as a whole. A new study from Merrill and Age Wave, “Early Adulthood: The Pursuit of Financial Independence,” finds that financial independence defines adulthood today—more so than the traditional milestones of employment, homeownership or starting a family. However, 80 percent of early adults say it’s harder to become financially independent than it was for previous generations, and their baby boomer parents agree. One major hurdle complicating early adults’ path to financial independence is mounting levels of debt. In fact, Americans 18 to 34 hold more than no debt.1 Additionally, approximately 1 in 4 early adults with a retirement plan have already made an early withdrawal, primarily to cover debt. Parents are understandably concerned about their children’s wellbeing and have been supporting them financially. The aggregate amount spent by parents on their early adult children is enormous—over $500 billion annually.2 The outlook isn’t entirely bleak, as the majority of early adults (72 percent) say they would benefit from financial guidance. Here is some advice to early adults to help their pursuit of financial independence: • Create and stick to a budget. Track and manage your expenses, and identify areas where you can make adjustments to fund your goals. • Pay down your debt. Pay high-interest, non-tax deductible debt first (e.g., • Start saving for retirement and take advantage of having longevity on your side. Contribute to an employersponsored savings plan such as a 401(k)—at least at a level that meets any company match. • Talk to your local Merrill advisor, who can assist with putting together a plan to help pursue your goals.
