DearNAPSAmembers,

Flynn Swift

I hope everyone enjoyed their break over the summer and ready for an exciting 2023! To thosewhoattendedtheCanberraCongressin January I hope you have recovered from #PCD and ready to hit the ground running for a new semester ahead. I would like to once again thank Congress Organising Chair, Zineb Medrek and the Congress Congress Organising Committee for their hard work and dedication towards what was an amazing weekforallthedelegates.

Congress was a week filled with education, networking and many exciting opportunities for delegates. Education and workshop sessions were held at the University of Canberra, where delegates were addressed by various industry bodies and pharmacists from a diverse range of roles with the key focus on the future of pharmacy and the different career pathways out there for pharmacists to embrace. The 2023 Congress was a great opportunity for our students to hear from leading figures in the pharmacy sector, engage with professional bodies and contribute to the conversation surrounding the future of the profession which they will soon enter Thus, it was quite appropriate to have the educational week kicked off by PSA President, Dr Fei Sim, posing the question ‘What does the future hold for pharmacy?’ and sharing some of her amazing stories for our students The Guild National President Address from Professor Trent Twomey highlighted to students the diversity of career pathways that can be found in community pharmacy and thefuturedirectionofprescribinginpharmacy.

Other highlights included Nicolette Ellis’s presentation on the significant social and health disparities of the LGBTQI+ community. SHPA’s president, Tom Simpson also gave a great talk about the continually growing career pathways available in hospital pharmacy, and Sue Muller from LocumCo spokeabouttheopportunitiesforstudentswhoarekeentolookfurtherafield andworkinruralandremoteareasaroundAustralia.

Let's Turn Back Time...

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia was founded in 1927, a peak national employer organisation, which represents Australia’s community pharmacies. Their utmost goal is to represent the interests of Members in industrial matters in the Fair Work Commission and state jurisdictions as well as provide local member support and advice regarding workplace relations matters.

Their mission is to enable community pharmacies to serve the needs and preferences of patients and health consumers across Australia using the pharmacy’s unique role in medication management and safety.

The PGA has been an icon and backbone of all Australian Pharmacies since 1927. With the guidance of the current PGA President, Trent Twomey, The PGA continues to grow and support all pharmacies around Australia.

Two vintage versions of Australian Pharmaceutical Formulary and the current version, APF25 The first edition was published in 1901. THE DAYS OF OLD...

An old copy of Australian Pharmacist Journal (APJ) from 1990, which has gone on to become PSA’s very own peer reviewed, multi award winning journal for pharmacists providing pharmacists with the latest up to date research and CPD.

The Script registery book was what pharmacists used before computers were intergrated into pharmacies

1977-PRESENT

The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) is the national professional organisation for pharmacists in Australia

and it's bloody beginnings...

The Vampire Cup was first organised by the NAPSA in 2006-07 as a blood donation competition between local associations.

At the end of the event, the total blood donation of each local association wasreportedtotheNAPSA National Council, with the winner announced during ournationalcongress.

TheInternational Pharmaceutical Students’Federation (IPSF)sawgreat potentialinthisevent andwiththeapprovalof NAPSA,VampireCup waslaunchedglobally.

Pharmacy students donated their blood at the Australian Red Cross Blood Service blood bank or at a donation bus provided by the Red Cross on the university campus.

The idea is that each country launches the Vampire Cup just like in Australia. Now the Vampire Cup is an international blood donation competition among all the IPSF associations, being the only official campaign for Humanitarian and Human Rights.
