Report from George Tambassis – National President, The Pharmacy Guild of Australia As National President of the Guild, I certainly value the relationship our organization has had with the National Australian Pharmacy Students’ Association over many years. The future of our industry and the community pharmacy sector is very much dependent on the vitality, commitment and innovation that students bring to the table, year after year. Community pharmacy owners are particularly mindful of the quality and talent of pharmacy students who come through the internship process. Now is a great time to be qualifying as a pharmacist in Australia. We have just commenced a new five-year Community Pharmacy Agreement, which includes a boost in funding for professional pharmacy programs and trials. This is all about broadening the range of services provided by local pharmacists and pharmacy staff across the network of 5510 pharmacies. We want to see the best possible use of the vital health infrastructure that pharmacies represent, and maximum use and job satisfaction for the thousands of pharmacists who do such great work in the health system every day. The Guild certainly values input from students on issues that may affect or concern them, so please feel free to be in touch with Guild Branches and officials at any time if you have queries on any matter affecting community pharmacy.

UTAS Farewells the 4th Year Students On November the 4th, seventy students and teachers gathered for the Fourth Year Graduation Function. It was a cocktail style event held at the stunning Lenna of Hobart. Awards were given out on the night for both teachers and students, which was a lovely way to end their degree. Teachers addressed students with their powerful words of wisdom to inspire our budding pharmacist’s. It was a great night for our student’s to celebrate the end of their degree and to enjoy each other’s company before they part their own ways for their intern year in 2016. TAPS wishes them all the best for their future in pharmacy and are excited to see where they all end up.

GUAPS’ Successful Networking Event On the 21st of November, GUAPS hosted a professional networking evening at the Hilton in Surfers Paradise. The event was generously sponsored by Alphapharm, and it was an excellent opportunity for everyone who attended to expand their networks and discover fresh opportunies in a relaxed environment. In attendance were 50 GUAPS students and about 20 professionals in the pharmacy industry, who all brought something unique to the room, whether it be experience in practice, advice about career paths or a new perspective on current industry affairs. It was very special to have the calibre of professionals that came along, amongst them the founders of GUAPS, Tristan and Jane, who had an award named after them. The awards presented were for the student who went over and above their role on the GUAPS committee (the Hoffman-Blake Award), and the year representative who went over and above their role (the Cooper’s Cup). Congratulations to Don Lam, recipient of the Hoffman-Blake award, and to Jenae Freeman, recipient of the Cooper’s Cup. A special thankyou to Alphapharm as well as the Pharmacy Guild of Australia for your kind sponsorship and donation of a free APP registration; this successful event wraps up the year for GUAPS. Griffith University Pharmacy Students should look forward to an exciting year in 2016, many plans to improve the excellent quality of GUAPS are already underway.

RandI Going Rural! Sitting on the top of Mount Gillan (refer to image 1) made me think how beautiful Australia is and why aren’t more people taking advantage of rural placement to see Australia. My time in Alice Springs for my 4 week placement was incredible, the people you meet and the things you learn are more valuable than the textbook, more beautiful than a picture and more memorable than your grandma’s pudding. Whilst I was on placement in Alice Springs I had the opportunity to see the incredible sights of Uluru (refer image 2), Kings Canyon and The Ulgas. Experiences like this made me really appreciate how unique Australia is and also just how lucky I am to have the opportunity to see these stunning places doing what I love to do. The culture experience on rural placement is unique and the things you learn cannot be taught. Some placement in rural and remote setting can be geographically isolated however not once whilst I was on placement did I crave the hustle and bustle of the metropolitan life. When you’re in rural Australia you get to breathe clean air, experience life away from the big smoke and appreciate the little things.

RandI Going Rural! Can you believe that Alice Springs community cover a catchment of approximately 1.6 million square kilometres and supports the people residing in the Northern Territory and also in remote communities in Northern South Australia and in the South-West of Western Australia, to put this in perspective Sydney covers 12,145 square kilometers. During my time in central Australia I had the chance to interact with people from different cultures, different communities and different walks of life, learning their way and hearing the stories are amazing of how they access healthcare. Can you imagine driving and 600km to pick up a script or to see a GP…. sounds crazy right? Do you want to make a difference in the health outcome of Australia? Are you wanting a challenge or wishing you could experience places like Alice Springs? If yes is the answer contact me, Kellie Langham, your Rural and Indigenous chair to discuss your next placement. “The sun is perfect and you woke up this morning. You have enough language in your mouth to be understood. You have a name, and someone wants to call it. Five fingers on your hand and someone wants to hold it. If we just start there, every beautiful thing that has and will ever exist is possible. If we start there, everything, for a moment, is right in the world.”- Warsan Shire SO WHAT IS STOPPING YOU??? Cheers Kellie
