President’s Report Dear NAPSA Members, With the Board now complete, NAPSA have been working hard on existing initiatives and also to ensure to bring new and exciting initiatives. I am very excited to announce that the additional 4 board members of NAPSA were elected at our SGM on Wednesday October the 7th. Congratulations to Jessica O’Connor (SUPA), Lauren Haworth (TAPS), Shefali Parekh (VPSA) and Ton Pham (JCUPSA) on being elected on the Board, and I look forward to working with you all to assist NAPSA in further growth. The 23rd and 24th of October marked the 2nd Annual Blackmores Institute Symposium. NAPSA had a high presence at the event and we would like to thank Blackmores for their funding efforts and for a fantastic Symposium that was put on. The event had a comprehensive program with an educational experience relevant to pharmacy students, pharmacists, GPs, naturopaths, researchers and allied health professionals. The Symposium brought together a diverse-line up of leading international and Australian researchers and clinicians in the field of integrative medicine to present not only a broad overview of current research in this area but the translation of this to specific professional practice. There was a huge amount of positive feedback on the event and NAPSA are excited to see what is in store for the next Symposium. I hope you all had the chance to participate recently in our annual National Pharmacy Student Survey (NPSS). Each year NAPSA uses the results from this survey to advocate your views and concerns in the profession. Whilst identifying for branches and ourselves exactly where we can support you more in your quest to becoming a job-ready pharmacist. The survey is still open, so please make sure to complete it.

President’s Report NAPSA’s Annual Vampire Cup is complete. A big congratulations to all participants. We had a great uptake and I look forward in anticipation to hear the final result of total donations and branch awards at our upcoming NAPSA congress. While on the subject of congress, at NAPSA HQ, it is all systems go in preparation for the upcoming NAPSA congress at Townsville in January. James Cook University (JCUPSA) is looking forward to hosting 350 of NAPSA members as you descend to the very warm Queensland for a fantastic week of networking, education and social events. More information will be released to delegates in the coming weeks so watch this space! This issue of the ePlacebo is jam-packed with some great information and competitions! PDL has launched a competition where you can win a $1000 travel voucher for signing up for a free PDL membership! We also have the 6CPA Scholarship information in here, and information on how to further advance your career with PSA’s postgraduate studies. As students wind-down for the year, NAPSA is working hard to ensure we can bring more new and exciting initiatives for members in the New Year. I look forward to being able to present some of these to you all in the coming months. Good luck to students completing exams and I look forward to meeting you all in Townsville. Vampire Cup Vampire Cup 2015 comes to an end Vampire Cup 2015 has officially come to an end and another year of donations and hard work has created an immense impact! Each and every branch has played a crucial role in making aware the importance of donating blood. Some branches have improved upon last year, some surpassed their goals and others stayed dominant. However, together we have been able to save over 840 lives. So congratulations to everyone who donated blood platelets or whole blood, spread the word to create awareness or simply made an effort to help save someone’s life. Because YOUR blood is now being used to help cancer patients, causes of anaemia, surgical patients in open-heart surgery, patients with autoimmune diseases, trauma patients in car accidents, patients with kidney, heart and stomach disease and many more. Without the work of the Red Cross and all of you, this difference would not be made! Thank you to each branch for consistently making an effort and members a part of your pharmacy awareness committees. The numbers will be finalised soon and we look forward to letting you know which branches had the highest percentage of member donations!! As well as the Young Blood Award! NAPSA affiliates and those around us have given blood and all indisputably filled a life saving prescription.

GUAPS Goes Relaying On October 17-18th GUAPS participated in the 2015 Griffith University Relay for Life at the Gold Coast Campus. Due to exams and assignments the GUAPS team, or Psychedelic Pseudo Runners, wasn’t as big as previous years. Nevertheless GUAPS managed to raise $215 for the Cancer Council, which we’re pretty happy about! Paul Jaffar, the local member for the Pharmacy Guild also came along as apart of the team as well, being a great way for the team to have a chat to some professionals in the area. Recently GUAPS hosted the inaugural Pharmacy Vs. Dentistry Friendly Soccer match, sponsored by our Treasurer Don Lam. The event proved to be a success, with the game going into over time with GUAPS winning 4-3 and only requiring five stitches. Coming up GUAPS has their Annual Networking Event, which is set to be the best yet with some of the greatest minds in the Pharmaceutical Industry coming the event. Not only will this be a great opportunity for GUAPS members to network amongst themselves, but also with a plethora of different professionals.

CaSPA’s October Success For the first half of October, CaSPA has been extremely active with the huge success on both the education and social side. On the 12th of October, CaSPA and the ACT Guild worked together to provide the CaSPA members an extensive QCPP workshop. Lisa Gibsons presented for an hour, teaching students about the QCPP program, how it connects to the role as a pharmacist. The diabetes education workshop on the 20th of October was also another success for CaSPA. This was thanks to a room filled with students eager to learn, and a highly trained and enthusiastic pharmacist, Tara Whelan. On the social side, CaSPA’s Annual Trivia night was another huge success. On the night, students from different health faculties competed with each other for the title of Trivia King, only to lose to a pharmacy team, led by the 2014 President Constance Kanaridis. CaSPA were able to raise hundreds of dollar to fund next year’s events. Overall, CaSPA has been on a roll.

TAPS is All Systems Go! It has been all systems go for TAPS of late! This semester we have been fortunate enough to join forces with the University of Tasmania’s rural health club, RUSTICA. TAPS travelled to Cygnet for a rural high school visit where the students were given the opportunity to learn about the pharmacy profession and got the chance to participate in a cream making activity. Continuing our work with RUSTICA TAPS representatives and members attended the Annual RUSTICA Networking Dinner on the 12th of August. The evening saw two key speakers, including Rachael, a rural pharmacist who relayed her experience of working on the Tasman Peninsula during the devastating bushfires in 2013. A great evening was had by all of those in attendance and is an event that we look forward to begin a part of in the future. TAPS held a stall at the inaugural ‘Festival of Bright Ideas’. This festival’s was held during National Science week and aimed to have to fun stalls that celebrate all sides of science. Stalls included; the future of science (robots / hoverboards), explosives experiments, Space travel and liquid nitrogen experiments. TAPS partnered with paramedic and medical students and held a cream making station and provided health information to students and parents. It was a fantastic day and we enjoyed collaborating with our future colleagues. TAPS hosted a Trivia night sponsored by The Pharmacy Guild of Australia on the 19th of August. It was great to see so many people in attendance from across all year levels, with first years taking out the coveted title. The TAPS Enchanted ball was held at Frogmore Creek Winery on the 5th of September. It was great to have over 18 inter-state NAPSA branch members attend this year! It was a magical evening at a beautiful venue and it gave everyone who attended the chance to get dressed up and let their hair down.

TAPS is All Systems Go! Some of our members were recently given the opportunity to attend the Pharmacy Business Network conference held at Etihad Stadium from the 17th-19th of September. The conference proved to be an invaluable experience for those who attended; hearing from industry leaders and gaining an insight to the successful running of a pharmacy. TAPS held their first barrel in collaboration with TARTS (Arts society) with the theme being Oktoberfest! There was an array of drinks on offer, a food van and DJ all night. We had a huge turn out and everyone really enjoyed their night- a great success! TAPS had a table at the Annual Pharmacist Dinner hosted by all the major Pharmacy bodies including; PSA, PGA, SHPA and UTAS. It was a fantastic night and a great opportunity for our members to network with future employers and celebrate the achievements of local pharmacists as well as congratulating our UTAS interns for finishing a great year. With the semester coming to the end, TAPS are buckling in for exams. We have had a highly successful year and look forward to the opportunities 2016 has to offer. SUPA Celebrates World Pharmacist’s Day It has been a busy time of year for SUPA as always! For the first time ever, we celebrated World Pharmacists Day on September 25th with a staff vs. students soccer game and Webster packing competition. Unfortunately the staff managed to win soccer, but the students brought it home with a clear win in Webster packing! There was a BBQ and bake sale as well, with all proceeds going to SUPA’s chosen charity for the year – Headspace. We managed to raise just over $400 on the night, and hope to keep the donations coming throughout the year! Of course a day like this couldn’t go ahead without our hard working sports officer Simi, and community awareness officer Clare. Thanks to Mirage Rural Health and PSA for sponsoring the event, and webstercare for kindly providing the materials for webster packing. Dom our professional development officer managed to organise another successful education event – this time a First Aid course. There was a great turn out of students, varying from those wishing to learn something new, to those applying for intern jobs in the coming months. On October 15th SUPA set sail to Neverland with our second semester Disney themed cruise. Everyone really got into the spirit of things and a fantastic night was enjoyed by all! The final event for us this year is our annual gala ball on November 21st. This year’s theme is ‘What happens in Vegas’, and with tickets selling out in only a few days, everyone is excited to say farewell to the year that was – and to find out who will be ‘Mr. and Mrs. Pharmacy’ from our graduating fourth year and second year masters class. JCUPSA Makes a Stand Pharmacy awareness has been a big player in the last month for JCUPSA up in Townsville. Our pharmacy awareness chairs, along with some volunteers, have been busy visiting local high schools to raise the interest in James Cook University’s Pharmacy program and the pharmacy profession in general. Mental health is always a sensitive area, and JCUPSA has been making an effort to help raise awareness for those in need. Through supporting the recent R U Ok? Day, JCUPSA members also helped to promote ‘Liptember’ which aimed to help raise awareness for women with mental health issues by kissing away the blues. Our members also banded together to show our support for Mental Health Week by running a bake sale which was a hit! We raised over $100 from the event and will be donating the funds to Beyond Blue. CONGRESS IS NOW UNDER 100 DAYS AWAY! And we hope you are all getting as excited as we are! Mandy Dreger JCUPSA Publications and Merchandise Chair
