Reshaping Politeama into a symphony of open spaces
Como / Italy
Politecnico di Milano
Master’s degree Thesis, 2017
Considering the cultural and historical importance of Politeama teatre, most of it kept and replaced some sections of it in order to bring out its best qualities. A community center was a clear option as a new main use for the building considering the current sociopolitical situation of the area and the great number of possibilities and openness that such typology carries.
A symphony is an extended musical composition in Western classical music, most often used for orchestra. Although the term has had many meanings from its origins in the ancient Greek era, by the late 18th century the word had taken on the meaning common today: a work usually consisting of multiple distinct sections or movements. Such metaphor is made first of all because of the relation between the Politeama and music.
Camping solar tent
Stuttgart / Germany
University of Stuttgart
Erasmus project, 2017
Harvesting energy from the sun makes a lot of sense in hot desert environments, and the U.S. military has taken advantage of solar technology in the past by develop ing energy generating solar back packs and watches for its troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. The idea of this project is applying photovoltaic cells on a simple and small camping tent to provide elec tricity for people who are using the tent. Referring to U.S. military solar powered cells, the idea is not new. But this project is representing a mobile structure combined with photovoltaic cells to obtain the highest possible efficiency of solar energy by rotating and moving.
Concept
the concept of design is inspired from sunflower. During the day, young sunflower track the sun from east to west. At night the plants turn to face east awaiting the rising sun. Adult sunflowers settle down and just face east. The movement of the sunflower is due to uneven growth. This growth is driven by genes that respond to light and the plant’s circadian rhythm. These sun-oriented behaviors give sunflowers advantages.
Inspiring with this concept, the project is a sun track gadget to obtain more light and generate electricity. However the gadget move manually not automatic, but the project will be developed in the future to track the sun by monitoring and moving with a motor.
OPV Cells
Organic photovoltaic (OPV) materials are technology of the 3rd generation of PV which convert light into electrical power.
Design Process
The idea was a double skin tent which covers a usual camping tent (first skin). Second skin divided to small movable strips. Then every strips divided to small tensile textiles. At the end there is one big rotating arc with PV cells.
Corniglia pedestrian bridge
Cinque Terre / Italy
Politecnico di Milano
Master’s degree studio design, 2015
Cinque Terre is a string of centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline. Corniglia is the smallest and the highest of the Cinque Terre five villages. The existence path to connect train station to the village is along stair that is not so easy to rise up. so this new bridge brings enjoyment and excitment for visitors because of its shape and height. The design is inspired by an organic line such a free ribbon to follow the topography and site plan lines.
