mandatory vaccinations

Should vaccines be MANDATORY? As vaccination rates against the coronavirus increase around the world, so do the discussions about whether governments and/or employers should make vaccination a requirement.

V

accination is a public health priority; one that has been carried out by governments around the world for decades. In 2020, the world desperately needed a new vaccine to fight the biggest health crisis we’ve ever experienced – and we made it happen. Investment and motivation came together in a global push, and the development, approval and deployment of safe, effective vaccines within a year is a feat of human perseverance, dedication and ingenuity like we’ve never seen before. A number of countries have made it mandatory for people working with high-risk groups or large crowds to be vaccinated, and some are also introducing regulations to ensure crowds are all fully

vaccinated before they can enter a venue. But what is the situation in South Africa? Dhevarsha Ramjettan, partner and employment law specialist at Webber Wentzel in Jo’burg, answers the questions everyone wants to know.

What does South African law currently say about employers mandating vaccines? “In June 2021, the Minister of Employment and Labour issued a revised COVID-19 Direction on Health and Safety in the

Mandatory vs compulsory

Compulsory vaccination means not getting vaccinated is illegal. Mandatory vaccination means not being vaccinated precludes the unvaccinated person from certain services or goods, like travel or schooling. Mandatory vaccination is nothing new around the world; for instance, if you want to travel to some countries, especially in Africa, you need a yellow fever vaccination. Similarly, most countries require proof of vaccination – especially against tuberculosis, mumps, measles, rubella, hepatitis and polio – if you want to live there.

Workplace. The Direction provides that employers must conduct a risk assessment to determine whether it is necessary to implement mandatory vaccination for employees. In the absence of such a risk assessment, employers are not permitted to make vaccination mandatory.”

If an employer makes the COVID-19 vaccination for those medically able to receive it a requirement for employment, what rights would those who don’t want to get vaccinated have? “The employer will need to assess the nature of the ‘personal reasons’. If it can be linked to a constitutional ground (ie the employee relies on their right to bodily integrity or right to religion, belief and opinion), the employer is required to take reasonable measures to accommodate the employee in the

workplace. This may involve certain modifications to the employee’s job. If the ‘personal reasons’ cannot be linked to a constitutional ground or where the refusal is determined to be based on unreasonable or spurious grounds, the employer may consider dismissal for operational requirements. This would particularly be the case when it can be shown that vaccination is an inherent requirement for the job, ie to make it safe for that employee and other employees, and that, without vaccination, the employee cannot render services safely.”

What are the legal benefits and risks linked to mandatory vaccination that need to be considered? “Benefits for the employer may include ensuring the health and safety of employees, and reaching herd immunity in the workplace. The risks may include potential employee disharmony and litigation against the employer.”

Does individual liberty outweigh public health? When – and how far – can the government step in? “Obliging employees to be vaccinated may limit certain fundamental rights in the Constitution, particularly freedom and security of the person, and freedom of religion, belief and opinion. Although it is possible for these rights to be limited, that limitation must be reasonable and justifiable. On the other side of the coin, it may be possible for the employer to argue that the rights of other employees can be used to support mandatory COVID-19 vaccination, for example, the right to life and the right to an environment that is not harmful to health or wellbeing. Due to the constitutional rights involved, the issue of mandatory vaccination for employees may need to be determined by the Constitutional Court.” *The views experessed here are not necessarily

Vaccine myths busted

Social media is a hotbed of debates. Arm yourself with the facts from the medical experts at Sanlam.

MYTH: The vaccine was developed too quickly. We don’t even have a cancer or HIV vaccine yet. FACT: The coronavirus family has been studied for decades, with governments around the world investing money to push scientific research when the pandemic hit. Tens of thousands of people took part in vaccine trials around the world, and manufacturing took place at the same time as safety studies – meaning the vaccines were ready to go once they were approved.

MYTH: The vaccine will give you COVID-19. FACT: The vaccines – including the ones administered in South Africa, produced by Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson – do not contain the live virus and cannot give you COVID-19.

MYTH: We don’t know the long-term effects of the vaccine. FACT: Vaccine side effects show up within weeks after administration, and since the vaccine is given in one or two shots, it’s very different to medicine taken daily, which can build up in the body. The mRNA vaccines, in particular, such as those by Pfizer and Moderna, are quickly degraded by the body.

MYTH: We don’t know what’s in the vaccines, and it could be dangerous. FACT: Vaccine ingredients are listed online. If you have a history of severe allergic reactions, consult your doctor before getting vaccinated.

MYTH: The vaccine won’t protect me against the Delta variant. FACT: The vaccine has been tested and proven to be most effective in reducing the impact of infection and disease from the Delta variant – so, while you might get infected, you are unlikely to get as sick or die from it.

MYTH: You can still get COVID-19 even if you’re vaccinated. FACT: The vaccine doesn’t prevent COVID-19, but reduces the risk of severe illness, hospitalisation and death as a result of it.

Stay grounded! A 2008 study exploring the health benefits of plants in hospital rooms revealed that patients recuperating from surgery who looked at greenery during their recovery period needed less pain medication than those who didn’t. Even just inhaling Mycobacterium vaccae, a bacterium that lives in soil, can increase levels of serotonin and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. The good news? All you need is a pot, potting soil, some air, water and light.

WHAT EVERY PARENT NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT

SENSORY LEARNING Sensory learning aims to stimulate children’s senses in multiple ways, and encourages them to use their senses to learn new things. The senses usually employed in multisensory learning are visual, auditory, kinaesthetic and tactile (ie seeing, hearing, doing and touching). Other senses may include smell, taste and balance (eg making a soup or riding a bike).

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? According to the ‘UK Independent review of the teaching of early reading’ report published in 2006, multisensory learning is effective because it keeps kids more engaged in their learning. Sensory learning/play also helps to build nerve connections in the brain, encourages the development of motor skills, and supports language development. It also fosters ‘scientific thinking’ and problem-solving. And it can involve mindful activities, which are beneficial for all children. It can also be used to help support children with special educational needs and disabilities.

HOW DOES IT HELP SAVE MONEY? Less is more, so your playroom doesn’t need to look like a toy shop exploded in it. Some days it may be difficult to monitor exactly what your little one is getting up to and into, so you may consider swapping out toys rather than giving them too many new ones at once. This will enable them to really see, smell, touch and explore each item/toy carefully.

10

SUMMER 2021/2022 SANLAMREALITY.CO.ZA

How to include it in your day-to-day parenting A child’s taste buds change every two weeks, so pop something new into your trolley regularly. Sensory play that focuses on hearing can include playing and listening to music, guessing sounds (think rain, trains, birds), or even just experimenting with volume while you’re driving in the car. To stimulate your child’s sense of smell, try to get outside for

a quick walk in the park to “smell the roses” (the autumn leaves, sticks and pine cones you pick up along the way are also great for tactile learning). For kinaesthetic stimulation, get creative and map out an obstacle course for your child to explore. Hopscotch, red rover and Twister are other classic games you can play together, too.

WHY YOU DON’T NEED EXPENSIVE TOYS Who hasn’t seen the child at their first birthday party, more interested in the gift wrap than the actual gift itself? Indeed – a dog’s bowl lying in the garden can create hours of entertainment for a toddler, as can basic water and sand, and you really don’t need to spend thousands of rands on toys for your child. If you look around your house, you will find them all there. How about opening the Tupperware cupboard and allowing your child to explore it extensively? Or get those pots and pans out and make a bit of ‘music’.

Overfishing

Are we

fishing for trouble? The ocean is our planet’s blue lung. So why is it often the last thing we talk about when it comes to protecting our environment? By IGA MOTYLSKA

rom phytoplankton to whales, our oceans face a multitude of threats resulting from the continuous overexploitation of natural stocks through commercial, illegal and unregulated fishing, poaching and bycatch; unenforced laws and poorly regulated fisheries; deep-sea oil drilling and mining; coastal developments, and pollution. A multi-pronged, solutions-based approached is needed, while being cognisant that there is no one-size-fitsall solution, as suggested by the Netflix documentary Seaspiracy. Giving up seafood entirely may not, as it may seem on the surface of the water, be the best way to save the oceans. This cancel-culture approach overlooks the fact that fish and seafood are two of the most traded commodities globally, with 820 million people deriving a livelihood from these industries, and some three billion people relying on it as a primary source of protein. In Africa, marine and inland fisheries contribute to the food security of an estimated 200 million people, while employing a further 10 million. To add, the combined economic benefit derived from South Africa’s coastal resources amounts to 35% of annual GDP. Instead, we need to interact with and manage the ocean ecosystem in a more environmentally responsible way that helps to alleviate pressures on natural fish stocks, while underwriting the sustainable development of our future global economy.

Over

820 million

people worldwide derive a living from the fish and seafood trade.

35%

of SA’s annual GDP comes from the combined economic benefit derived from our coastal resources.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

Greenpeace found that we need to protect at least 30% of our ocean by 2030 to safeguard its vast bounty of resources, by establishing a network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and prioritising government policies. In 2018, South Africa announced 20 new and expanded MPAs, which increased the protection of our waters from 0.4% to 5%. “These MPAs are a critical tool in the ocean protection toolbox. They play a vital role in ensuring the survival of all ocean space by limiting or controlling human activities in sensitive habitats, and

WHAT’S ON THE LABEL? SASSI (Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative) has compiled a ‘traffic light’ SASSI list (wwfsassi.co.za/sassi-list), pocket guide and mobile app (wwfsassi.co.za/sassi-app) in partnership with WWF to help consumers make educated and sustainable seafood choices. The FishMS service (079 499 8795) allows consumers to send an SMS with the name of a fish or seafood to receive an instant message about the status of the species. Non-profit Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certifies more than 18 000 sustainable fish and seafood products globally that can be traced back through the supply chain. The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ACS) ecolabel – found on product packaging, restaurant menus and fish counters – indicates responsibly farmed seafood and sustainable aquaculture.

preserving them from future development to help heavily harvested fish species breed and recover. Increased ocean protection creates insurmountable socio-economic, ecological and cultural benefits, not only for us, but for generations to come,” says Lauren van Nijkerk, communications and campaign director at WILDOCEANS, a programme of the WILDTRUST. “Limiting or prohibiting extractive activities and removing human pressures in MPAs can help species recover and thrive. Research has proven that fish found in MPAs are more diverse and have a larger biomass (bigger and more fish) – with biomass being 670% greater within fully protected areas compared to unprotected areas,” continues van Nijkerk. What is hopeful is that since the 2006 study that claimed our oceans will empty by 2048, “we have seen increasing efforts SUMMER 2021/2022 SANLAMREALITY.CO.ZA

SHOULD I BE EATING FISH AND SEAFOOD?

It is also important to buy and eat fish and seafood with sustainability in mind – whether it is wild caught or farmed through aquaculture. “We need to rethink the way we catch, sell, buy and eat fish to promote catch diversity and low-impact fishing methods for sustainable fisheries management that support local job creation and keep value

ABALOBI connects CommunitySupported Fisheries (CSF) directly with consumers, chefs and restaurants through a digital marketplace (Fish With A Story) to create an equitable value chain, while fostering seafood provenance and accountability. Since 2018, the initiative has overseen the sale of over 150 tons of 58 species to around 3 000 buyers, which has resulted in the direct flow of over R10 million to 2 000 beneficiaries across six South African fishing communities.

Sanlam has partnered with WWF for many years, donating over

“Popular species are overfished due to market demands; however, about 80% of the catch on our digital marketplace comes from healthy fish stocks, as we promote access to real catch of the day. This is one way that we get chefs excited about celebrating our rich seafood culture and the diversity of undervalued species,” he continues. The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture (SOFIA) 2020 report found that the percentage of fish stocks that are within biologically sustainable levels decreased from 90% in 1974 to 65.8% in 2017. This makes aquaculture – if done

responsibly and managed properly – another possible solution. Aquaculture has been the main source of fish for human consumption since 2016, with its share increasing to 52% in 2018. Locally, aquaculture has allowed SASSI green-listed abalone fishing along the south coast, and SASSI green-listed mussel and oyster farms in Saldanha Bay to export globally. If we are to ‘conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development’, as per Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14, we need to start with protecting life below (and above) water. The list of ways in which we can do this is as long as the Mariana Trench is deep. We need to dive in head first, before we can swim, by supporting sustainable suppliers, lobbying governments and organisations to adequately monitor and enforce fisheries policies, and championing conservation efforts.

THERE IS HOPE

An effectively managed and highly protected MPA can help some threatened species recover in just five to 10 years. Along South Africa’s coast, the seventy-four seabream (Polysteganus undulosus) has experienced a comeback after near collapse. The Aliwal seasonal expansion also protects historic spawning grounds, including commercially targeted species such as geelbek (Atractoscion aequidens) and dusky kob (Argyrosomus japonicas), protecting these species for future generations.

How to train for a marathon,

even if you’ve never run a day in your life Whether you’re a regular runner or a total beginner, completing a marathon is a life goal for many. We talked to experts to understand how to get started, safely. By AMY HOPKINS

How to start Every marathon runner started somewhere: right at the beginning. “The age-old phrase ‘slow and steady’ is definitely the correct approach for an absolute beginner,” says Cape Town coach Steve Attwell, owner and founder of Embark – a group-training platform that transforms everyday people into athletes. “Too often we see athletes doing too much too soon; if your body isn’t ready for the progression, you’ll get injured.” Physiotherapist Genine Manchip agrees: “The most common running injuries are those

1 When training gets tough 2

“Run with someone of the same ability. When someone else is also ‘suffering’ you seem to feel less sorry for yourself and push through.”

Tips to cope, from coach Steve Attwell.

“Know that without ‘this longer run’, or without ‘this harder session’, you won’t be able to keep on track to reach your end goal.”

SUMMER 2021/2022 SANLAMREALITY.CO.ZA

caused by overuse. These generally occur because the runner has increased their training load too quickly, they wear incorrect shoes or they have a poor running technique.” “A slow build-up over time is a great way for the body to adapt to the pressure that running applies to joints, bones and ligaments. This cements a foundation for more miles – and more smiles,” says Attwell. For new runners, he suggests that instead of focusing on a marathon distance from the get-go, set short-term goals in the build-up to a marathon, which he does through the following programme.

3

“Compare your first run to your most recent run.” Note the progress.

4

“Take a selfie when you’ve finished.” Record the moment and acknowledge what you’ve achieved. “Post it on social media to share your evolution into a healthy lifestyle with your followers, so they can celebrate with you.”

Fun fact!

The concept of a marathon as we know it today was inspired by the legend of an ancient Greek messenger who raced about 40km from the site of Marathon to Athens, with the news of an important Greek victory over an invading army.

Your programme, whatever your level PHASE 5

PHASE 1 “We begin with a six-week, 5km beginner’s programme. This starts with 30-minute sessions three times a week, with a mix of walking and running on flat roads,” says Attwell. “As the weeks go by, we aim to run more than we walk, until eventually by the end of the six weeks, you are running for a full 30 minutes.”

PHASE 2 “Runners progress to the six-week, 10km programme. Sessions grow closer to 45 minutes, with more weekly kilometres, but still at an achievable, safe pace. We also introduce some speed work and hills for strength training.”

PHASE 3

PHASE 4

“We move on to the six-week 15km programme with four sessions a week, with one-hour sessions, and a longer weekend run.”

“The next six weeks focus on a build-up to a half-marathon.”

“Once you have the base of a half-marathon, you can consider aiming for the pinnacle (a marathon). Just remember to keep the progression slow and steady,” says Attwell. He currently offers a 12-week training programme to help runners progress to the marathon level.

suicide

WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT

suicide It’s a scourge that has been amplified by lockdown-induced self-isolation. Here’s how to spot the signs of depression and do your part in suicide prevention. By SANELISIWE MALIZA

What causes suicide?

That’s how many suicides happen in South Africa, according to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG, 2020).

LIKELY to commit suicide than women (SADAG, 2020).

Depression is a quiet disease. It’s not like a protruding broken bone or a fever. It hides in plain sight. If not managed, it can lead to suicide. If you look hard enough, you may see the signs in yourself, a friend or a family member. Perhaps it’s recurring thoughts of death, or extreme exhaustion. The thing is, it looks different for different people, and can show itself in inconspicuous ways. “Mental health difficulties can have a wide range of causes. For some, factors could result from childhood abuse or trauma,” explains counselling psychologist Candice Britz. “Other contributing factors can include social isolation – not helped by the pandemic and lockdown. In South Africa, where so many live below the poverty line, and unemployment is high, socio-economic factors can contribute, as can bereavement, extreme stress, bullying and exposure to trauma like domestic violence.”

Mental pain is less dramatic than physical pain, but it is more common and also more hard to bear. The frequent attempt to conceal mental pain increases the burden. – CS Lewis

Depression can also be chemical: some of us are more predisposed to depression, whereby a chemical imbalance can lead to depression even if everything else about someone’s situation seems ‘fine’ or ‘normal’.

What are the symptoms?

“Most people who are depressed have a combination of symptoms; this could include a depressed mood for most of the day nearly every day, diminished interest or pleasure in almost all activities, recurring thoughts of death, a decrease or increase in appetite, slowing down of thoughts or reduction of physical movement, fatigue or feelings of worthlessness,” says Britz.

Why are suicide rates so high in SA?

For many, depression remains unmanaged. Britz explains: “We know that psychology, SUMMER 2021/2022 SANLAMREALITY.CO.ZA

What’s the difference between depression and ‘the blues’? According to WebMD, while most people get the blues (sadness, grief, loneliness), they can bounce back from this. It’s when you don’t bounce back, “your feelings of sadness linger, are excessive or interfere with your work, sleep or recreation”, impacting your sense of self-worth, that you may be suffering from depression.

What can we do?

1

IDENTIFY BEHAVIOURAL CHANGES Community can play an important part in supporting someone who is depressed or suicidal. “What we always look for is a change in someone’s behaviour," explains Britz. You want to think about what contextually has been going on for that person. Has there been something in their environment that may have triggered this behaviour?”

2

SPEAK UP Speaking to and supporting someone who has depression can be a life-saving act. There is a strong link between unmanaged depression and suicide. “One would assume that the longer or more depressed the person is, the more recurrent thoughts of death they have, which are further perpetuated if the depression is untreated. So, there is a worry that if depression is left untreated, the suicidality may then increase,” concludes Britz.

3

in general, is more normalised among white South Africans specifically. In Zulu or Sotho, for example, we don’t have words for depression. So how do you then seek help for something you don’t even have a word to describe in your language?” Historically, psychology has also left behind and ignored a large portion of the population. Access to help remains a challenge. Psychologist appointments can be costly and tricky to access. “There is also stigma attached to mental health and seeking professional help,” adds Britz.

f there are any teens living under your roof, they’re probably caught up in the content-sharing craze TikTok has given rise to. As with other platforms before it, its novelty can make it feel like a stranger babysitting your kids. It’s natural to be concerned about who and what your child is exposed to, not to mention questionable content you may have heard about. To keep you one step ahead, here’s the lowdown on the world of TikTok.

What’s the appeal of TikTok? TikTok offers the content equivalent of opening the fridge and seeing it stocked top to bottom with your favourite foods. Unlike other social platforms, users don’t necessarily need to follow an account to see the content it posts. Add to this its unpredictable nature (you don’t know what content you’ll see, so it’s fun to explore and check in frequently), and it’s easy to see why users can fall down a TikTok rabbit hole. “This element of surprise and unpredictable variable reward are a huge part of TikTok’s appeal, particularly to a developing teen brain, physiologically and psychologically wired to seek out reward,” says Sarah Hoffman, a lawyer and co-founder of Klikd, which provides solutions for parents and teens to use social media safely and responsibly.

When my kid says they want to become ‘TikTok famous’, what do they mean? To become ‘TikTok famous’ is all about

Your child and the law

Under the Cybercrimes Act, a child as young as 12 can be arrested and charged with a criminal offence for sharing pictures of someone without their consent.

Is it okay to check their chats?

At Klikd, the answer is a resounding ‘yes!’, says Hoffman. “Parents want to trust their child, without checking their devices, but this trust has to be earned,” she continues. Set expectations by being clear that you aren’t checking out of a lack of trust in your child, but rather to guide them in a sometimes-dangerous online world. Her advice? “When you do check their device, acknowledge the good first. For example: ‘I love how you showed up here for your friend’ or ‘Well done for blocking this person’ or ‘I’m so proud that you didn’t accept this friend request from a stranger’.”

Some of the most famous users have followers in the millions. These aren’t celebrities, but normal teens who have turned their videos into viral phenomena. creating highly relatable and shareable content. “Some of the most famous users have followers in the millions. These aren’t celebrities, but normal teens who have managed to turn their videos into viral phenomena,” says Hoffman. This relatability is what sets the app apart. “The diversity of experiences, communities and content builds connection and understanding through the shared language of

video,” says Fortune MgwiliSibanda, TikTok’s Head of Public Policy in Africa.

What can go wrong? For all the creative expression TikTok allows, a select few use it to post questionable and often dangerous content. This can go viral, drawing other users to mimic what they’ve seen. Most of these ‘TikTok challenges’ are harmless, but some have been flagged for concern by health experts.

Take the face wax challenge: a Dutch barber went viral when he posted videos of customers’ faces covered in hot wax. Or the infamous Blackout Challenge, where users choke themselves until they pass out and wake up moments later.

Keep your child safe on TikTok Because the content your child posts can land on anyone’s feed, and vice versa, consider taking these steps to ensure their safety.

RELATIONSHIP FIRST “Relationships are the great offset to [the constantly evolving social media landscape], and the greatest parental control is connected, engaged and informed parents,” says Hoffman. The Klikd app gives parents updates on the latest and most important social media issues to keep you in the loop and prepare for what can often be difficult conversations with your teen.

AGE LIMIT “A measure is available at the sign-up stage to ensure only users aged 13 and older can access the platform,” says Mgwili-Sibanda. According to Klikd’s TikTok Guide For Parents, inputting the correct date of birth here is probably the most important information to populate because TikTok attaches this date to other parental controls.

STAY CLOSE The Family Pairing option lets you link your TikTok account to your teen’s one to enable content and privacy settings. “This will only work on accounts that you know about,” notes the TikTok Guide.

Mgwili-Sibanda suggests setting this up together to guide your teen’s online experience while educating them about online safety and digital citizenship.

TURN THESE OFF Suggest your account to others Allow your videos to be downloaded Public (This is the default setting, so anyone can view or comment on a user’s videos. “You can also block a user so they won’t be able to interact with you at all,” says Mgwili-Sibanda.)

long covid

What you need to know about

LONG COVID

WHO IS LIKELY TO SUFFER FROM LONG COVID?

The coronavirus can leave a lasting impact way after an initial quarantine period. Read on to find out more about what doctors have dubbed ‘Long COVID’. By ANGELIQUE RUZICKA

L

ingering after-effects of COVID-19 – referred to as ‘Long COVID’ by the World Health Organisation (WHO) – are relatively common. In fact, according to the UK’s Office for National Statistics, one in five people who have had COVID-19 have persistent symptoms long after they’ve recovered from the illness.

WHAT IS LONG COVID?

You’ve got Long COVID if the signs and symptoms of COVID-19 continue for an extended period. While there is no international consensus on duration, most experts will view a period longer than 12 weeks as diagnostic of Long COVID. Symptoms include a feeling of unwellness, constant tiredness, non-specific muscle and joint pains, as well as brain fog. Dr Marion Morkel, chief medical officer at Sanlam, explains: “[Brain fog] feels like what you’re struggling to create is not as fast in executive decision-making. It feels as if you’re just having a blank or struggling to talk, and you have a lack of energy. You have a general feeling of unwellness and sluggishness.”

24

SUMMER 2021/2022 SANLAMREALITY.CO.ZA

Long COVID typically affects those who suffered from severe COVID or life-threatening COVID. “We see it more often in women than in men,” adds Dr Morkel. “We also see it more often in people who have an existing psychiatric burden or past history. We know this isn’t primarily a psychiatric burden, but this exacerbates the number and severity of symptoms, with a longer period needed for recovery.”

CAN YOU PREVENT LONG COVID?

HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?

This differs from person to person. Dr Morkel says: “We know of people in the first wave who still have symptoms as we speak, which is now more than one year ago. Some people stop having symptoms three or four months later.”

Ultimately, preventing Long COVID may be possible through vaccination. “There’s lots of anecdotal evidence that many people who had some symptoms of Long COVID have had significant decreases in symptoms following vaccination. There are also deep learnings that come from the review of the treatment given for symptomatic cases in every wave, and which treatment modalites and/or combinations decreased the likelihood of Long COVID. You see this being actively implemented and refined with every subsequent wave,” says Dr Morkel.

HOW CAN YOU TREAT LONG COVID?

+

The good news is that it’s possible to treat Long COVID. It’s important to get a diagnosis as soon as possible though, so you can start a treatment plan and get the right support. Dr Morkel says treatment for Long COVID is similar to the treatment given to people who’ve had chronic myalgic encephalomyelitis (CME). “CME needs combined rehabilitative services. You need physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychotherapy. It is advantageous to have a GP that can help you in coordinating the entire treatment plan.” Doing some of your own work during the rehab process is vital, too. “Try at least to get out and sit in the sun for 15 minutes, take a walk around your house, and when you slowly improve, increase the exercise regime.” Vaccination is still possible even if you’re suffering from Long COVID – in fact, it’s recommended to reduce the chances of reinfection.

+

+

+

WHEN CAN YOU RETURN TO WORK?

If you feel well enough to return, you should get tested to make sure you’re not still infectious. Dr Morkel adds that to get back to work, you ideally need to get the green light from your doctor, physiotherapist or occupational therapist: “Based on a person’s levels of exhaustion or stamina, they will usually negotiate with the employer. They can ask for those individuals who can start to return to work to be allowed a staggered approach for the next two weeks.” Staggered starts could mean working for a few hours a day, and then increasing the number of hours. It could also mean ensuring that there are longer break sessions, particularly if the work you do is labourintensive or needs lots of concentration. “If you overdo it, you can have a complete relapse and then you have to start the programme again,” cautions Dr Morkel.

+

+

The short answer is ‘yes’. Sanlam, for instance, has committed to deliver on its policy promises, and its life cover policies will still pay out regardless, even if the cause of death is due to a COVID-19 infection. When it comes to severe illness and disability policies, you’re also covered for any COVID-19-related illnesses or disabilities. “It doesn’t matter whether it is COVID-19 that caused that disease. We would cover you if you bought a product in which you can claim,” says Dr Morkel. However, if you’re unable to work because of lockdown or quarantine, the policy does not cover this. Claims can only be made on valid medical conditions. If you get reinfected with COVID-19, you are covered by your policies in the same way that you were during the first infection, according to the benefits you are covered for. No exclusions would apply; however, the same terms of those benefits would have to be followed. For example, if you have a waiting period before cover is activated then claims would only be valid after this period. Always read the fine print of your policy, and speak to your financial planner if you’re unsure.

helping kids connect

How to help children socialise in a socially distant world Experts share how you can help your kids safely reconnect in our increasingly disconnected world. By AMY HOPKINS

YOUNGER CHILDREN SEEM TO BE FARING BETTER THAN OLDER CHILDREN “As a tutor, I work with two age groups: five- to nine-year-olds and 10- to 13-year-olds,” says Taryn Doidge, a private tutor and classroom teacher. “One of the loveliest things to witness is the spontaneous excitement expressed by a small child. They’re so expressive and often reach out to someone closest to them to hug, hold a hand or sometimes even pick a friend up. They’re now so aware of social distancing that it’s interesting to see how they quickly adjust their ‘celebration’ by staying in their own bubble. They have really adjusted to this new world.”

26

SUMMER 2021/2022 SANLAMREALITY.CO.ZA

Comparatively, she says that the children in the older group she tutors have become hypersensitive. “Anxiety seemed extremely high when they first integrated back into the classroom, but this appears to have settled. Fatigue has also crept in. In some of my students, their drive to excel has diminished, where they were highly competitive before. With award ceremonies being very different to before, some children have had to find a new form of motivation,” she explains.

ARE YOUR KIDS ‘LANGUISHING’? “Many of my patients are experiencing a sense of boredom, lack of motivation and difficulty focusing,” says Jacqui Morgan,

a counselling psychologist who works a lot with teens. “It’s something that feels like burnout, but it isn’t; feels like depression, but doesn’t meet the criteria; feels like loneliness, but prefers aloneness; and overall just feels – blah!” She says that the word best to describe it is “languishing” – “like a foggy sense of stagnation and emptiness that makes you feel joyless and aimless.” “Our experience of time has been distorted by this pandemic; we seem to be suspended in an undifferentiated, colourless limbo. Remaining in this state may decrease your emotional resilience against developing anxiety and depression. One remedy is to build positive resources, which should get every bit of attention. Another is the amelioration of negative symptoms,” explains Morgan.

Create new routines, such as family ‘social’ time

Create safe in-person engagements wherever possible

“Newer communication technologies such as Instant Messaging and social networking sites encourage adolescents and teens to stay connected to existing friends. However, these positive effects do not necessarily hold true when forming new contacts and talking with strangers over the

Validate their worries, but gently remind them that just because they feel a certain way doesn’t make it true.

Doidge says that setting boundaries and creating routine are more important than ever. “Children need to feel safe, and boundaries and routine help with this. After a day of online learning, they need to step away from the screen. Give them some of your time – they need human interaction. Remember: young children are still learning to read social cues and body language. This usually develops through social interaction with peers, but, with that being limited, they need to learn from their families. The only way for this to happen is for families to set time aside for each other – no screens or distractions,” says Doidge.

3

Move away from catastrophising

“Coach your child to avoid catastrophising,” recommends Morgan. “During times of stress and anxiety, we tend to jump to worst-case scenarios. Validate their worries, but gently remind them that just because they feel a certain way doesn’t make it true.” Her favourite skill to teach young people? Learning about ‘pros and cons’. “Problem-solve all the cons, expanding their ability to think of all the alternative possible solutions. It’s so empowering and can help one to radically accept reality the way it is and get on with it,” she says.

5 STEPS TO HELP YOUR KIDS Let them talk “Let your children talk about what it’s like to be them right now and validate their feelings. Resist jumping into fix-it mode,” suggests Morgan.

4

internet,” says Morgan. When it comes to making new connections, it’s best to do these face-to-face, in a safe and responsible way. As soon as you can, get your kids back into real-life socialising. Of course, weigh up the health risks and be responsible – but know that online engagement will likely never fulfil the developmental and wellbeing benefits of in-person interactions.

Give them space not to worry about the adult stuff

“Children also don’t need to hear our fears or any ‘big people problems’. They’re sensitive and take on more than we know… and believe me, they do hear and internalise adult conversations,” says Doidge. However, she does encourage parents to talk to their children about the pandemic from a positive point of view: good doctors, the power of vaccines, positive stats, and so on.

here are two experiences in life in which we are profoundly alone: when we are born, and when we die. Yet at birth, we are surrounded by care and love; guiding hands easing our way into the world. Should the same not happen in death? Surely we should leave this world as we came into it, with our loved ones comforted and supported, and them and ourselves gently eased into the next phase? This is exactly where a death doula can be a vital source of support. As humans, we have been supporting each other through

suggest various courses of action. Since the grief journey is so different for everyone, I tailor a process that will work for them.” Doulas have different approaches – while some specifically work with the bereaved, others may work with people who are terminally ill, and some may do both. This can involve helping patients plan their death by talking about how they would like to spend their last days, and what their final wishes are. “I offer support to individuals who are terminally ill or trying to come to terms with an

She also works with teenagers and children, who don’t always understand the concept of death. Any denomination can benefit from a doula, as a doula takes your personal beliefs into consideration when helping you. “Some people find comfort in talking about

What is a death doula? Also called end-of-life doulas or death midwives, a death doula straddles the netherworld between medical and mental care, offering help and support through the stages of death and grief. “Support is a very personal process,” says Varsha Sukhu, a Jo’burg doula who realised she wanted to provide people with the care and support she herself craved after her parents’ passing. “I talk with each person and

illness,” Sukhu shares. “I also offer support to family and friends of a person who has passed away or is in the process of passing away.” This support can take the form of having the difficult yet necessary conversations people may be too scared to have with their loved ones, or even themselves. A doula can gently guide you through your feelings and offer a safe ear in which to unburden. “I help people talk about their thoughts and allow them to voice some of their biggest fears and worries,” Sukhu says. “Many people see grief support with an end destination in mind, but it is a journey I work on, giving my clients techniques to help them cope and activities they can do to help with grief-related anxiety. Many people think that grieving looks a certain way. But I help

spirituality,” Sukhu says. “We discuss different theories and concepts related to death and dying, like what happens to the soul, or dreaming about people who have passed.” Like most doulas, Sukhu is available on any platform and at any time you need, be that a WhatsApp message or a phone call.

What is the difference between a death doula and a bereavement counsellor? The main difference is that there aren’t formal accredited qualifications for death doulas, while there are for counsellors and coaches. Anyone can become a death doula, if they feel that it is their calling. Some may even become doulas as part of their professional services, for instance a nurse, who would then be able to offer both nursing and doula support services. A death doula can offer more than a counsellor or coach can, depending on their skills and what you need. Some may offer reiki, or work with churches and other places of worship to offer religious support. You may need a death doula who can also help with funeral admin, or help create a tangible legacy, like a photo album or recipe book. Mostly, though, a death doula will maintain a sense of calm and dignity, helping ease the transition to eternal rest.

How to pick a doula

DEATH DOULA VARSHA SUKHU SUGGESTS: • Trust your gut. • Ask to have a quick conversation to see if you are comfortable being open and vulnerable with them. • Prepare questions. • Are you looking for coaching, energy work, a religious affiliation, and/or medical services?

Include this in your initial conversation. • Ask about the doula’s experience. • Also enquire about additional services, skills or qualifications. • Use word of mouth. • Enquire at your local place of worship or hospital, or check Facebook groups.

You can also try the rapids of the Crocodile River (less than an hour from Jo’burg or Pretoria) or take on the savage rapids of the Tugela River in KwaZulu-Natal. Local spots that’ll make you feel like you’re

overseas While COVID-19 has made flying overseas more difficult, here are local choices that’ll give you a taste of international travel. By ELISE KIRSTEN

IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR...

the Australian Outback

TRY: THE KALAHARI, NORTHERN CAPE The famed black-maned lions, gemsbok and springbok within the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park will leave you in no doubt that you’re in Africa. However, if you spend time just outside the park borders you could be in the Australian Outback. North of Upington, the Kalahari Desert’s red sand is much like that of Australia’s Simpson Desert. Just like in Oz, you’ll get to enjoy brilliant night skies, where billions of stars compete for attention, red sand dunes with scattered tufts of grass, immense 4×4ing country and an absence of crowds. BEST TIME TO GO: Winter, late autumn or early spring. It’s best to avoid summer, as temperatures can climb to above 40°C.

IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR...

the French Riviera

TRY: THE OYSTER BOX HOTEL, KWAZULU-NATAL Be transported to the French Riviera as you sip champagne and dine on seafood on the patio at The Oyster Box Hotel, overlooking the pool and the ocean beyond. The red-andwhite-striped umbrellas and loungers conjure up French flair associated with Jean-Paul Gaultier and Coco Chanel. This luxurious setting will transport you to the Côte d’Azur without too much imagination – and while you won’t be in Cannes, you may rub shoulders with some of Durban’s elite. BEST TIME TO GO: The shoulder seasons of autumn and spring offer balmy days, while summer can be hot and humid.

the Italian Dolomites

TRY: CATHEDRAL PEAK, KWAZULU-NATAL You could be looking up at the Italian Dolomites from the restaurant’s terrace at the Cathedral Peak Hotel, but you’d be in the Drakensberg. Surrounded by spectacular scenery, family-friendly activities include nature walks to nearby waterfalls, putt-putt, lawn bowls and tennis. The more adventurous can try horse riding or quad biking, or book a guided hike up Cathedral Peak. These nine-hour treks take place twice a week from the hotel, and besides being fit, it’s important that you’re not afraid of heights. BEST TIME TO GO: If you’d like to see snow-capped peaks, your best bet is to go in July or August. For hiking and other outdoor activities, avoid the summer rainfall period between November and February.

a Moroccan vibe

TRY: A’LA TURKA RESTAURANT, GAUTENG Be transported to the Middle East at this restaurant set in Yadah Castle, in Irene, Pretoria. The building is reminiscent of a Moroccan fort and the restaurant offers a fusion of influences from Turkey, Lebanon, Morocco and Greece. Turkish carpets, scatter cushions, hookah pipes, Arabic music and belly dancers all add to the ambience and make you feel like you’re in an exotic, far-off land. There’s also an on-site spa where you can enjoy a mix of traditional Turkish hammam therapies, massages and facial treatments. BEST TIME TO GO: All year, although if you’d like that desert night feel, a hot summer’s evening is best.

T&Cs apply.

IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR...

Ireland’s County Mayo

TRY: THE WILD COAST, EASTERN CAPE The Eastern Cape’s Wild Coast can make you feel like you’re visiting the rugged cliffs along the coastline of Ireland’s County Mayo. Downpatrick Head doesn’t have the iconic breach carved by wave action like Hole-in-the-Wall does, but it’s a similar rocky sentinel separated from the mainland by sea. Take in the dramatic Wild Coast on foot on one of the many multi-day hikes, like those that run from Port St Johns to Coffee Bay, a guided horseback trek, or a mountain-biking expedition across beaches and undulating hills. BEST TIME TO GO: Winter days tend to be mild and sunny and good for outdoor adventure. The sardine run also takes place during winter, bringing with it lots of whale and dolphin sightings, while summer is a popular time to relax on the beach.

IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR...

a French village

TRY: FRANSCHHOEK, WESTERN CAPE This town oozes French charm throughout the year, but celebrates its link with France with extra joie de vivre during the annual Bastille Day Festival. The event includes barrel-rolling and boules contests, and food and wine from the surrounding restaurants and wine farms. Picture yourself in France’s Bordeaux region as you sip Cabernet Sauvignon or Sauvignon Blanc at La Motte, Chamonix, or L’Ormarins, and dine at some of the country’s top restaurants like La Petite Colombe, Le coin Français and Monneaux. BEST TIME TO GO: The festival is held in mid-July; however, Franschhoek is prettiest in summer. SUMMER 2021/2022 SANLAMREALITY.CO.ZA

What’s the deal with NFTs? An NFT is unique digital asset, underpinned by blockchain. It’s a form of cryptocurrency – but instead of holding money, it comprises an asset like art, tickets or music. NFTs can be bought and sold online – usually with cryptocurrency like Bitcoin. According to forbes.com, as of May 2021, $174 million (R2.521 million) had been spent on them since November 2017. Because these NFTs are typically sold for millions, if not billions of rands, not many can afford them. Stefan Hundt, curator of the Sanlam Art Collection, explains: “NFTs are a specialised market that is in a development and speculation phase where there are some highly invested individuals and corporations. It seems that the success of NFTs in the art market is dependent on the acceptable form of payment. This means that the market is almost prescribed to a select number of people who have both stake in cryptocurrencies and the success of NFTs in the art market.” CAN THEY BE COPIED? By definition, if something is ‘non-fungible’, it means it can’t be replaced. Something that is fungible, however – like a house or physical money (eg rand coins) – can be replaced. Even so, many have asked if NFTs can be copied – as in, printed off the internet. While technically you can do so, that doesn’t mean you own the original piece of artwork. Owners of originals can prove they have the unique NFT through records stored on a blockchain. It means that, because NFTs are original pieces of art, they’re scarce, and it’s this scarcity that fuels their value.

What’s the difference between secured and unsecured credit? The lender, usually a bank, uses an asset to back the debt as a form of security, in exchange for providing a loan. Ayanda Ndimande, business development manager for Sanlam Retail Credit, explains that the most common type of collateral used by borrowers is real estate or vehicles. “If a bank loan is taken and this collateral is used, if the borrower fails to repay the loan, the car/house may be seized by the bank, based on the agreement between the two parties.”

44

SUMMER 2021/2022 SANLAMREALITY.CO.ZA

UNSECURED CREDIT The lender does not have a guarantee against the loan provided, so it comes with a higher interest rate and evaluation of credit scores. A personal loan – like the one Sanlam offers – is unsecured, explains Ndimande: “Credit cover normally is attached to it to ensure that instalments are paid when the borrower cannot pay due to disability, death, retrenchment and so on.”

mentorship Bettering yourself is never a one-person task. As humans, we rely on others to guide, strengthen, challenge and mentor us. Here’s how a mentor could help improve your career, relationships, and even your finances. By SKYE SIMPSON

SUMMER 2021/2022 SANLAMREALITY.CO.ZA

Over 70% of people feel that having a mentor is important, yet under 40% actually have one.

HOW DOES MENTORSHIP COMPARE TO SPONSORSHIP?

A mentor’s role is to pass on knowledge and act as a sounding board to someone less experienced than themselves, but where a mentor advises, a sponsor advocates. Unlike a mentor, a sponsor is typically a person working in the same organisation who helps you be ‘seen’ in meetings, coaches you on work projects and gives you exposure. A sponsor’s specific role is to push you in your career.

SHOULD YOU PAY FOR A MENTOR?

FINDING THE RIGHT MENTOR

André Retief, coach and mentor at COMENSA – the professional body for coaching and mentorship in South Africa – believes that the foundation of any successful mentorship is trust. You, the mentee, should be willing to be completely honest and open with your mentor, telling them your specific goals and challenges. You should also be prepared to do away with your ego, accepting advice from someone more senior than yourself. Most mentorship relationships form naturally. But how do you intentionally initiate a mentorship? Look for environments where you may find a mentor. If you’re looking for a mentor for your career, this could be as simple as thinking about the team you work with in your professional environment. Is there someone senior to you who you admire and think could be a good role model?

Statistically, finding a good mentor can help IMPROVE your job satisfaction and relationships, lessen stress and help you FOCUS on your goals. Source: Eby et al., 2008

“Life coaching combines mentorship with counselling to provide people with a sounding board and advice in a number of different aspects of life,” says Warren Munitz, founder of Integrative Coaching. Finding a life coach is a great option when you need a professional, reliable mentor you can trust. COULD A FINANCIAL MENTOR MAKE YOU RICHER?

Managing your money with confidence can require a little help from the experts to keep you on track with your financial goals. A financial planner can equip you with the power, confidence and knowledge to take control of your money. “A ‘money mentor’ can help you discover what you actually need,” says Nicki Blignaut, senior financial planner at 2one2 BlueStar. Blignaut believes that financial planners can help you feel less overwhelmed by your finances and hold you accountable to sticking to your savings plans. If you’d like to form a mentorship with your planner, choose someone you feel comfortable with and supported by. To get the most out of this mentorship, be completely honest with them, tell them your goals and allow them to support and guide you with their expertise.

If you’re willing to make the commitment to bettering any aspect of your life, there is a person out there willing to help you achieve your goals. All you need to do is reach out.

Finding a quality mentor is important; someone with a good amount of experience and the right connections. Sometimes the best way to find a good mentor is to pay for one. It can even help keep the relationship more professional and avoid the risk of blurring mentorship with friendship. Paying for the mentorship could also help with accountability, feedback and having regular, productive sessions.

digital identity theft

HOW EASY IS IT TO STEAL YOUR IDENTITY? Personal data is one of your most valuable assets, but it’s also among the most vulnerable. Are you doing enough to protect yourself from digital identity theft? By DOMINIQUE BOWEN

What’s your digital identity? Gone are the days when your identity started and ended with a little green book. Organisations capture so much more data about you as an individual, including your movements, preferences, dislikes and health record. digital identity theft

Has someone stolen your identity?

Steps to protect your digital identity CHECK YOUR CREDIT REPORT OFTEN

1

STEP 1 Contact the lender with whom the impersonator has opened an account in your name. Provide the necessary information to prove your innocence, and you will be issued a letter confirming the impersonation.

It’s important to stay one step ahead of fraudsters. To spot any signs of identity theft, Ayanda Ndimande, business development manager at Sanlam Retail Credit, suggests checking your credit report

Only share your ID number with authorised individuals for legitimate reasons. regularly. “There you will notice unknown credit accounts, too many enquiries in your name that you are not aware of, a drop in your credit score or a judgement or default in your name,” she says.

statement monthly to spot anything fishy and stop fraud in its tracks. “Look for unauthorised debit orders for a contract or credit account you have no knowledge of,” suggests Ndimande.

2

3

SCRUTINISE YOUR BANK STATEMENT

Many banks set a purchase amount threshold for eNotes when you make a purchase or a debit order goes off your account, so you may not be alerted to the odd small amount being debited. This is why it’s important to scrutinise your bank

STEP 3 Use the letter confirming impersonation, along with supporting documents, to apply for Protective Registration on the SAFPS website: safps.org.za. Once loaded, your ID number will be flagged on the SAFPS database to show that you have been a victim of impersonation, which alerts future credit providers to take additional care when confirming your identity.

THINK TWICE BEFORE SHARING

While a criminal can be charged under POPIA for exploiting your personal data, by that time your data is irreversibly disseminated far and wide. Only share your ID number with authorised individuals for legitimate reasons.

stocks 101

What is a stock?

“Stocks or equities represent a share of ownership in a company that is listed on a stock exchange like the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE),” says Kingsley Williams, chief investment officer at Satrix. “They provide investors with access to the future profits and any dividends those companies chose to pay to their shareholders. As these companies’ earnings and dividends grow, so, too, should the share price and the value of your investment.”

Your guide to the most common stock types GROWTH STOCKS PROS: Growth stocks are expected to experience rapid growth, which can mean faster wealth appreciation. When it comes to returns, shareholders also enjoy returns from capital appreciation (a rise in the market investment price) to come. CONS: Dividends are not usually paid to shareholders, but are rather ploughed back into the company to continue its growth. Growth stocks are also reliant on the buoyancy of the market; if you need to sell stocks during a market downturn, you could lose.

PROS: With the right amount of patience, you can reap long-term rewards with these types of stocks through compound interest. They also have a relatively low risk, and reinvesting your dividends can help grow your returns even more. CONS: If patience is not your virtue, you won’t see the potential returns of value stocks. These stocks can also offer limited diversification, which means investing in these may come with added risk.

DIVIDEND STOCKS PROS: These stocks provide dividends regularly, and in cash, which offers peace of mind for investors. They are great for those looking to invest for the long haul. CONS: The share price of dividend stocks can fluctuate at any given time, and the company in question can decide not to pay out dividends. Investors can also potentially earn less than those who’ve invested in other stocks.

How do unit trusts intersect with stocks? When to invest and stay the course Even in times when markets appear volatile, there are still opportunities you can take advantage of, such as discounted shares during market crashes as investors panic-sell their shares. It’s always recommended that you speak to a financial planner before taking any action.

Stocks should not be purchased as a means to ‘get rich quick’ – patience is the name of the game. – Kingsley Williams, chief investment officer, Satrix

“Investing in stocks is a long-term endeavour, as markets are volatile and risky,” says Williams. “In the long term, however, equities have shown to be one of the best ways to grow wealth above inflation. Therefore, when investing in equities, you should at least have a five-year (if not longer) investment horizon. Stocks should not be purchased as a means to ‘get rich quick’ – patience is the name of the game.”

Using ETFs to help diversify your risk If you don’t want to concentrate your risk on a single company and would rather spread the risk across several listed stocks, Duma Mxenge, business development manager at Satrix, explains that there are alternatives. “Opt for an investment vehicle such as an exchangetraded fund (ETF) or unit trust, which will diversify your exposure. If you don’t like equity exposure (due to the short-term volatility), you can also opt to invest in other asset classes such as fixed interest, property or cash.”

Should you invest during market volatility? The best way to take advantage of volatile markets is with a recurring or monthly investment in an ETF or unit trust because, with lower average unit prices over some time when the market is down, you will be able to buy more units compared to when the market is up. This is referred to as rand-cost averaging. Keep making recurring investments to benefit from rand-cost averaging to really get ahead when things improve again.

UNDERSTANDING RAND-COST AVERAGING Your monthly contribution stays the same

Market drops, prices drop You clean up, thanks to lower unit prices

Worried you’ll suffer losses during a market downturn? It’s important not to make hasty decisions based on fear. Switching to a lower-risk portfolio can lead to ‘locking in losses’. Remember: cashing in at a low point makes a paper loss a real loss.

Building a portfolio of stocks yourself can be a time-consuming and costly exercise. “Unit trusts are collective investment schemes that allow investors to contribute relatively small amounts to access a broad array of investment strategies (including stocks) cost-effectively,” explains Williams. “A unit trust also offers the benefits of diversification, which is essential, especially when investing in stocks,” he adds.

Invest directly vs through a financial planner? GO SOLO: Satrix offers unit trusts and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), both of which are collective investment schemes providing exposure to a variety of investment strategies, locally and globally. Taking control of your investments and understanding how markets work will serve you well in achieving your longer term goals. GLACIER INVESTMENT SOLUTIONS: Glacier Investment Solutions allow you to invest in JSE-listed stocks to grow your assets through a financial planner. SPEAK TO A PRO: Speak to a Sanlam financial planner who is equipped to provide comprehensive and expert financial-planning advice.

REAL LOSS VS PAPER LOSS Furniture prices drop: at this stage this is only a paper loss, not a real loss

SHOP OWNER A panics, and sells off all of his furniture at reduced prices: he makes this paper loss real – he has lost actual money.

SHOP OWNER B waits until prices recover in a year: he retains all of his furniture and can now sell his full stock of furniture at the recovered price. The paper loss of the last year never became real for him.

retirement funds

WHAT HAPPENS TO

retirement funds WHEN YOU DIE? Many people believe that when they retire, they don’t need to do any further financial planning. But this isn’t true. By ANGELIQUE RUZICKA

2 Reasons to think about your finances into retirement

1

YOUR NEEDS CAN CHANGE, EVEN DURING RETIREMENT “It is crucial to keep up with financial planning even into retirement, as markets and personal circumstances change on a regular basis. Without financial planning, the risk of running out of income is greater,” says Hugo Lambrechts Jnr, a Sanlam financial planner at ConradiePrisma BlueStar.

Research: Dominique Bowen; Photography: Shutterstock, supplied

2

NOT ALL POST-RETIREMENT PRODUCTS CAN BE PASSED ON TO YOUR HEIRS A lack of financial planning can also pose a danger for your loved ones. Some post-retirement products are not automatically left to your heirs or dependants when you pass away, but unfortunately not everyone knows this. Post-retirement products are deeply misunderstood, so it’s vital to educate yourself about all the options before you invest in them.

What happens when you retire?

1

RETIREMENT FUND PROCEEDS When you retire, you can take a third of your retirement savings as a lump sum. You can invest the other two thirds in a post-retirement annuity. “Assets or investments that you purchased with your cash lump sum are part of your deceased estate when you pass on. They will be distributed in terms of your last will and testament, or intestate if you leave no will,” says David Thomson, senior legal advisor at Sanlam Trust. The products in which you invest your two thirds will not always automatically be passed on to your nominated beneficiaries, so it’s important to ask your financial planner what you should invest in if you would like to leave a lump sum or an income for your dependants.

RETIREMENT ANNUITIES When you retire, you can invest your retirement savings in a life annuity as well as a living annuity – or both. The advantage of combining the various annuity options available is that you can manage how you invest your money and have more control over your finances. Here we break down the various types of annuities, and show which ones give you the option to pass on funds:

Single life annuity without a specific term Income is paid for life and payments will stop when you pass away. Single life annuity with a specific term If you pass away during the selected term, your income will continue to be paid to your dependants for the remainder of the term. Joint life annuity Income will be paid to your second life insured for the rest of their life after you pass away. Living annuity When you pass away, you can leave remaining money to your beneficiaries, who can take the cash amount, or continue receiving an income.

Who gets to benefit from your retirement when you pass away?

It can be difficult to know where to start when you’re dealing with a loved one’s death and grief. But there are still formalities that need to be handled. Some of it must be done straight away, while other admin can take longer to organise and be set into motion. This is what you need to do, following a death: IMMEDIATELY

Report the death. Legislation requires that a person’s death must be reported to any one of the following authorised people/bodies: specific officers at the Department of Home Affairs, South African Police Service members, South African Missions, embassies, or consulates where the death occurred abroad, or funeral undertakers that have been appointed and recognised by law. When you register a death with the Department of Home Affairs, you will be issued with a death certificate, which will be vital in proving the death to various financial institutions.

FIVE HOURS LATER

Ask for help. Determine whether your loved one had a financial planner. ‘If so, this should be your first point of contact. A financial planner can locate financial accounts and coordinate with estate attorneys to get the information needed,” explains Lambrechts.

24 HOURS LATER AND BEYOND

Remember that when you inform the bank of a person’s death, accounts are usually frozen immediately thereafter.

56

SUMMER 2021/2022 SANLAMREALITY.CO.ZA

Money can be deposited, but no withdrawals will be allowed. If your spouse/partner paid some of the essential bills, this needs to be considered. Find the original will and the executor. The financial planner will help you with this. Lambrechts adds: “The Master of the High Court will appoint an executor if no nomination was made.” Make any relevant insurance claims and take care of financial obligations. “It’s important to make sure that you locate any funeral policy that may be in place, regular debt commitments are paid on time (mortgage and car instalments; levies for example), and short-term insurance is also kept up to date. “If you are the nominated beneficiary of any long-term insurance policies, as soon as you get the death certificate, send the insurer an email with a scanned copy attached and ask for their requirements,” says Thomson. Don’t worry if you’re finding it difficult to get everything together to apply for your insurance. “There is no time limit on life insurance death benefits, so you don’t have to worry about submitting a claim too late, as long as the policy was active at the time of the insured individual’s passing,” adds Lambrechts.

What to do financially when someone passes away

If the investment is governed by the Pension Funds Act, the trustees will allocate the money to your dependants in accordance with section 37C of the Act. “People who qualify are the spouse and children of the deceased member, and potentially other people who qualify. The trustees have a period of 12 months from notification of the member’s death to decide. “Your nomination of a beneficiary of the proceeds will be a factor, but not decisive. Actual financial dependency is also an important factor for the trustees to consider when determining who should receive, and in what proportion,” says Thomson.

There is no time limit on life insurance death benefits, so you don’t have to worry about submitting a claim too late.

Multimedia artist Thania Petersen is the mastermind behind the immersive Taxi Project experience, which saw a minibus taxi wrapped in vinyl images of her work. The artist’s focus is to redefine the stereotypes linked to her heritage, and with this project, the goal was to bring art to the people for whom it is made. “Everybody uses a taxi,” Petersen explains. “How we feel the city through the sound of taxis is something very unique to those who take it.” It was this thinking that inspired her lockdown short film Kassaram, which draws on stereotypes about the Cape Creole community and reinterprets them to explore its real roots. Images from the film were then transposed onto the taxi. Capetonians can spot the taxi out and about until the end of 2021.

Trade in your go-to braai spice for one of these recipes to give your next gathering around the grill some international flavour. Recipes & food styling: KATELYN ALLEGRA Photography: KIRSTEN MACKRILL

Hawaiian huli-huli spatchcock chicken with grilled pineapple salsa SERVES: 4-6 | PREP TIME: 20 MIN + 8-HOUR MARINATING TIME | COOK TIME: 1 HOUR • 1 x whole chicken • ½ cup tomato sauce • ½ cup soy sauce • ½ cup brown sugar • ¼ cup fresh pineapple juice • 2cm piece fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated

• 2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely grated • Canola oil, for brushing • 1 large pineapple, peeled and sliced • Handful fresh coriander leaves • 1 red chilli, deseeded and chopped

If using a standard braai, prepare a fire at mediumhigh heat. To spatchcock the chicken, place it breast-side down on a chopping board. Use kitchen scissors or a sharp knife to cut down either side of the backbone to remove it completely. Flip the chicken over and flatten it out, pushing down on the breasts with the heel of your hand. In a large bowl or ziplock bag, combine the tomato sauce, soy sauce, brown sugar, pineapple juice, ginger and garlic, and stir or shake until combined. Reserve and refrigerate half a cup of the mixture for basting the chicken later. Add the chicken to the ziplock bag or bowl, and stir or shake until evenly coated. If using a bowl, cover with cling film. Refrigerate overnight, or for at least 8 hours. Remove the chicken from the fridge 30 minutes before you’re ready to cook, and allow it to reach room temperature. Arrange the braai coals so that they are banked up on one side. If using a gas braai, leave the burners off on one side. Put the chicken skin-side down over the hot side of the braai grid for 5 minutes or until golden and charred, then move to the cooler area, away from the coals, and cook for another 35-40 minutes with the lid on, turning and basting every 5 minutes until cooked through. Move the chicken back directly over the coals for a final 5 minutes to get really charred and crisp. Set aside to rest for 5 minutes. Place the pineapple slices on the braai grid and cook until golden and caramelised, about 15 minutes. Roughly cube the caramelised pineapple and toss together with the coriander and chilli. Serve on top of the chicken.

Vegan American buffalo ‘wings’ SERVES: 4 | PREP TIME: 20 MIN | COOK TIME: 15 MIN Cauliflower ‘wings’: • 500g cauliflower florets • 70g (160ml) cake flour • 2 tbsp smoked paprika • ½ tbsp cayenne pepper • 1 tsp fine black pepper • 1 tsp garlic powder • 1 tsp fine salt • Vegetable oil, for deep-frying • 2 tbsp sriracha

Dip: • 1 cup vegan mayonnaise • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar • 1 tbsp nutritional yeast or miso • 1 garlic clove, grated • 2 sprigs fresh dill • 85g medium or firm tofu, crumbled • 3-4 sticks celery (with leaves), thinly sliced

Place the cauliflower florets, flour, paprika, cayenne pepper, black pepper, garlic powder and salt in a large bowl and toss to coat. In a deep pot, heat the oil to 180°C and deep-fry the cauliflower until crispy.

Toss the fried cauliflower in the sriracha sauce. To make the dip, combine all the ingredients. Serve the wings with the dip, and garnished with finely chopped celery leaves. SUMMER 2021/2022 SANLAMREALITY.CO.ZA

Want to make your own tandoori paste? • 4 Kashmiri dried red chillies • 2 tsp cumin seeds • 4 tsp coriander seeds • 2 tsp black peppercorns • 20 cardamom pods • 2 small cinnamon sticks

• 2 tbsp paprika • 2 tbsp tomato paste • ½ tsp ground turmeric • 2 tsp mustard powder • 1 tsp ground nutmeg • 6cm piece fresh ginger, peeled and roughly chopped

• 2 large garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 2 tsp honey • ¼ cup vegetable oil • ¼ tsp salt

In a small bowl, cover the chillies with boiling water, set aside for five minutes to rehydrate, then drain. Put the cumin, coriander, peppercorns, cardamom and cinnamon in a small pan over medium heat and toast for 3 to 4 minutes, until the spices start to brown and release their aromas. Add the rehydrated chillies, 90ml cold water and all the remaining ingredients, and pulse for a couple of minutes, until a smooth paste forms. Refrigerate until ready to use.

Moroccan ras el hanout-and-honey chicken SERVES: 4 | PREP TIME: 2 HOURS 30 MIN | COOK TIME: 1 HOUR Chicken: • 1 medium onion, peeled and quartered • 1 garlic clove, peeled • 3 tbsp ras el hanout spice • 3 tbsp honey • 1 tbsp fine sea salt • 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper • 1 bay leaf • 2 tsp smoked paprika • 3 tbsp canola oil • 8 chicken drumsticks and thighs

Couscous: • 2 cups couscous • 1 tsp fine sea salt • Zest and juice of 1 lemon • Handful fresh coriander • Handful flat-leaf parsley • Handful mint leaves To serve: • 125g pomegranate arils

‘Ras el hanout’ is Arabic for ‘head of the shop’, implying a mixture of the best spices a seller has to offer.

To prepare the chicken, place all the ingredients except for the drumsticks and thighs in a food processor and blitz until smooth and combined. Add 1-2 tablespoons of water if needed. Put the chicken in a large dish and cover with the spice and onion mixture. Cover and refrigerate to marinate for about 2 hours. Remove the chicken from the fridge and allow it to reach room temperature. In the meantime, prepare a braai fire at medium-high heat and arrange the coals so they are banked up on one side. If using a gas grill, leave the burners off on one side. Put the chicken pieces skin-side down over the hot side for 5 minutes or until golden and charred, then move to the cool area of the grid, away from the coals, and cook for another 35-40 minutes with a lid on, turning every 5 minutes until cooked through. Return chicken pieces to directly over the coals for a final 5 minutes to get really charred and crisp. Set aside to rest for 5 minutes. For the side, place the couscous in a large bowl with salt. Follow the package instructions until all the liquid has been absorbed. Fluff the couscous with a fork and stir in the rest of the ingredients. Serve the chicken with the couscous and pomegranate arils.

Creative direction: Marisa Steyn; food styling assistant: Cassandra Upton

How to make your own ras el hanout spice: • 2½ tbsp cumin seed • 2 tbsp coriander seed • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon or 1 cinnamon stick • 2 tsp ground ginger • 2 tsp black peppercorns • 1 tsp ground turmeric • ½ tsp cardamom seeds (seeds from about 10 pods) • Pinch of saffron (optional)

In a small pan, toast the whole spices until they release their aromas and have turned a shade or two darker. Don’t be tempted to skip this stage, as it really enhances the flavours. Tip into a spice grinder (or use a pestle and mortar), then add the ready-ground spices and dried herbs, if required, and crush to a fine powder.

“Acting has loved me back”

Interview: Dominique Bowen; Images: supplied

“I was such an introvert in high school. I didn’t know who I really was. Around Grade 9 I decided I was ready, that I had the guts to try acting. I enrolled at The Stage Performing Arts School & Theatre, and that’s where I found my family. It’s where it all began. “I love to tell stories – to leave people with emotion or something to think about. But I feel like acting has loved me back, too. It’s helped me find myself and a place in this world, which is important for all of us. We all need somewhere to fit in.”

“I like to call myself a people-watcher” “I pay attention to people: their quirks, their history and the lessons that they’ve learnt. Every one of us [working on Glasshouse] was vastly different, which made it interesting. I came out having learnt from every person I was on set with – from [director] Kelsey and the cast to the wardrobe stylist. “Adrienne Pearce, who played my mother, has such a strong personality. it’s time to have laughs. I really look up to her in that sense.”

“What would happen if the world came to an end?” “What was scary about filming Glasshouse was that it was quite easy to put myself in the world of the film. It certainly feels a bit like our world is crumbling around us at the moment. Filming gave me an insight into what it means to survive. Preparing for the role opened me up to that shift in priorities.”

“Stay motivated and the rest will follow” “For me, success is to be part of projects that bring me joy, that I feel have made a difference. Personal fulfilment is important to me. Yes, your career can bring a lot of fulfilment, but for the most part I believe we just have to look after ourselves. “I try to never get discouraged. I know that the next project will always be on its way. So, my philosophy is to stay focused, and the rest will fall into place.”

“The older you get, the more you think about consequences” “If I hadn’t gone into acting, I probably would’ve worked with animals. I’m drawn to purity and love, and one place I’ve always found that is in animals. You can be your truest self around them. “I have an inner battle because the meat industry could be a lot more humane; I’ve cut back a lot on meat in the past year, working towards vegetarianism.”

GET A GUARANTEED R1 CASH BACK OR EVERY LITRE YOU FILL UP AT TOTAL

Which fuel rewards really give you bang for your buck?

No hoops, no tricks, no false promises. It’s guaranteed for everyone. Go to www.moneysaver. cards to apply. Apply today to enjoy guaranteed cash back with your Sanlam Money Saver credit card, helping you save with every swipe.

Many of us don’t qualify for the full reward that brands offer us – because we aren’t on a platinum, gazillion-points tier status – so the promises they make of cash back when filling up at fuel stations are often more enticing than what you really get back. The Sanlam Money Saver credit card fuel partnership with Total isn’t dependent on tiers, points or statuses: what we promise is what you get. That’s a guaranteed R1 cash back in the form of Wealth Bonus for every litre of fuel you swipe for at Total. You can access that cash back quarterly or annually. That’s it. Simple!

WHAT DO YOU ACTUALLY GET OUT?
