Supplying Seychelles LT Curtis Butler FISC Sigonella Vital military missions can be found almost anywhere in the Fleet and Industrial Supply Center (FISC) Sigonella area of responsibility.

FISC Sigonella, the newest of seven FISCs under Commander, Fleet and Industrial Supply Centers, is a component of Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) responsible for providing logistical products and services to fleet and installation customers throughout Europe, Africa, and Southwest Asia. On 9 January 2010, LS2 Nancy Cid found out just how far the area of responsibility stretched. Cid was temporarily assigned to the Seychelles island chain approximately 1000 miles of the coast of the Horn of Africa in the Indian Ocean. She was selected to be the logistics subject matter expert for a joint military operation involving Navy and Air Force aviation. Over 70 military and civilian personnel benefited from the support Cid provided in the areas of postal, procurement, fuels, and administra-

tion during her five month mission off the coast of Africa. Her long list of accomplishments included delivering nearly 2,000 pounds of outgoing mail, providing tracking and visibility for critically needed repair parts valuing $1.5 million, and coordinating with local merchants to procure material needed for day-to-day operations. The local vendor relationships were critical to LS2 Cid as she was responsible for the accurate financial documentation of vehicle rentals, accommodations, drinking water, shuttles, and property leases. The staggering volume of fuel was one of the most impressive aspects of her duties. Records for over 5,000 gallons of aviation fuel had to be received and maintained every two days. Additionally, 800 gallons of diesel fuel were delivered weekly to support jeeps, tractors, and

Fire Safety for Kids at School forklifts. Attention to detail was critical for the $15,000 per week fuel operation to run smoothly and without delay. In spite of the heavy workload, she found time to volunteer at two local orphanages by painting and revitalizing functional areas. Her hours of hard work at each location showed tangible improvements and helped bolster the relationship between the U.S. and the Seychelles. Cid’s contributions to joint operations off the Horn of Africa highlight FISC Sigonella’s significant contributions to the demanding military operations in 5th and 6th Fleet. Dedicated sailors such as Cid will continue to be the driving force in successfully delivering NAVSUP products and services to an evergrowing range of customers.

requirement for all Military personnel and DOD civilian personnel operating a motorcycle on any military installation. Safety is the number one concern when riding no matter what you’re riding whether it’s a

motorcycle, moped or even a dirt bikes. The good news is that here in Sigonella the Safety office offers monthly courses geared towards your riding level. The classes are instructed on base and are free.

However, slots are filled on first come, first serve basis so riders may have to wait several months for entry. For more information on when the classes are being held contact the Safety Office at 624-5630.

By Gene Tatum NASSIG Fire Inspector According to the U.S. Fire Administration, a fire can get out of control in as little as 30 seconds. Students should understand what they can do to prevent fires at home and at School and learn to recognize things around them that could be a fire hazard. Fires can get out of control quickly and can happen anywhere. It is important that students understand basic fire safety at school so they know how to react in an emergency. Teachers can give examples of possible fire hazards: putting something flammable near an open flame, such as a candle; playing with matches; leaving the stove on; or laying fabric or paper over a lamp. Students can share their results with the class to help other students recognize possible fire hazards at home or in the classroom. Conducting fire escape drills at school is a monthly requirement for the NFPA here at NAS Sigonella. Students may not understand why they need to walk in a straight line when leaving the building or why they need to check in with their teacher once they have left the building. All of this should become a habit when practicing fire drills, which in turn will reduce the confusion. Explaining the reasons behind each step of a fire drill can help students to take official fire drills more seriously and be better prepared to react during an emergency. Getting out of the building as quickly as possible is essential during a fire. In an emergency situation, it is easy to get distracted and lose track of students in the Fire,continued Page 12

Is there a problem with the air conditioning at the NEX or is it part of the energy savings program? A1. NEX chillers and air handlers are running properly and Public Works Department (PWD) Sigonella High Volume Air Conditioning (HVAC) Shop professionals check their operation daily. One issue is that the power quality supplied by the local Italian

power company, ENEL, is not always stable and power spikes and drops can cause the HVAC systems to shut down. When this happens, the NEX immediately calls the PWD to reset the chillers. During the down time, the building's temperature rises and it takes longer to cool the building once the air is brought back online. Unfortunately, we do not have control over the power quality from ENEL. Furthermore, when it was initially constructed, the NEX was installed with a separate Direct Digital Control (DDC) system that is not compatible with our basewide DDC system. PWD Sig is in the process of awarding an Energy Savings Performance Contract, which will include the installation of a compatible DDC system and will increase both energy conservation and efficiency at the NEX. Additionally, it should increase our system reporting and reliability as well.

Now that summer is in full swing, have you taken the necessary steps to prepare your pet? Here are a few tips from Veterinary Services to ensure success: 1. Ensure your pet has plenty of fresh water at all times of the day, especially if they are outside for any length of time. Never leave your pet outdoors without water. 2. When going to the store or in town, do your pet a favor and leave them at home. Pets kept locked up in a car or truck can die from heat exhaustion in a matter of minutes in this warm environment. Having windows left partially open is not adequate enough during the hottest months of the summer to prevent the effects of heat stress (remember pets don’t have sweat glands like humans, they lose body heat through panting—when it’s humid panting is less effective)

is not adequate for pets in this environment. Dog houses provide shade, but they also can act like ovens by absorbing heat from sun rays, therefore they are seldom ideal means to protect your pet from the heat of the day. For yards without trees or other means of shade, consider installing a pet door to allow your pet to get out of the hot weather or providing them with a small wading pool where they can lie down and cool themselves in water. Signs of heat stress can range from lethargy, inability to stop panting, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, coma, or sudden death. If you think your pet may be suffering from heat stress, immediately get them inside or to the shade, pour cool water on them, fan them, and contact a veterinarian immediately. 4. For long-haired pets, consider having their fur trimmed for the summer. Long, thick coats of hair act as an insulator of heat and make the animal less tolerant of the temperature in their environment.

3. Try to avoid having your pet outside during the hottest part of the day. If pets must spend the day outdoors, ensure that they have shade and plenty of fresh water available at all times. Many times shade is only available during the early morning or late afternoon; this

Q3. I just wanted to know why housing is not helping a repair or replace front door screens at Marinai housing? A3. Housing is aware of the numerous worn and/or damaged screens in Marinai. Unfortunately, in accordance with the lease contract between NAV-

FAC and the Italian Lessor, screens are not repaired or replaced when the units undergo 'change of maintenance’ (i.e., a new resident moves in). As the majority of the worn screens are not considered wear and tear items, the Lessor is not obligated to repair or replace them through our trouble call system. The Sailor-helping-Sailor Program delivered a huge impact on the damaged screen issue in years past, therefore, tenants weren't charged. Housing has provided NAVFAC a list of current worn/damaged screens and we are currently awaiting a cost estimate from the Lessor to replace them. Once Housing receives the cost estimate, they will provide the funds to NAVFAC and NAVFAC will then initiate a delivery order to the Lessor. Lessor/Housing will schedule the replacements with our residents. Last week, Housing and NAVFAC requested a modification to the lease contract

Abdullah and Steve His name is Abdullah – a delightful businessman with a proper wife and two grown sons, Mohammed and Ahmed. His home is Saudi Arabia. I sat next to him for ten hours last week on a flight from Rome to Chicago. His meals were prepared according to prescribed standards and from specified ingredients. I ate the standard fare. From my standpoint, our conversation was way better than a Ken Burns documentary. I could honestly say, “Abdullah, I don’t know a great deal about Saudi Arabia. Tell me about your country and your people.” Had we been on a Concorde, there may not have been time for his answer. He spoke with great devotion on matters of politics, religion, domestics, technology, business and family. Occasionally I would ask a clarifying question and he was so glad for the opportunity to shed yet more light on the particular subject at hand. As a young boy, his home in Southeast Saudi Arabia did not have air conditioning. In August, the temperatures would regularly reach 120 degrees Fahrenheit. By 1100 each day, the families would all retire to their respective caves in the hills until

approximately 1800. There the temperature was such that Abdullah needed two blankets to keep warm during those hours of rest. It was simply too hot in their normal living areas to be productive. He was particularly proud to tell me of the tightness of his family and community. He described life itself as very rich, an abundance to be savored. He asked how many came to my wedding reception. I told him I thought we had approximately two hundred guests but many of them came from hundreds of miles away. He smiled and said, “At our weddings, we have ten thousand guests. We prepare almost as many lambs over rice as you have guests. Life is very rich.” I suspected that Abdullah was hardly a recent citizen of his country but I thought I would at least ask about his ancestry. Well, let’s put it this way . . . the fact that his eldest son’s name is Mohammed is more than just a tribute to the prophet. As direct descendants, Abdullah’s family has been in that portion of the world for at least thirteen centuries. Abdullah is from Saudi Arabia in a manner altogether different from the manner in which I am from Sigonella. My roots here are not quite as deep. In fact, I might say that I am from Illinois. However, in a few more years, I will not even be able to say I have lived half my life in that State. Only one of my parents was born in Illinois and he was the first generation to be so. Go back a couple more generations and you won’t find any of my ancestors that were even born in the country I call home. I am not envious of Abdullah nor do I have any desire to unnecessarily compare our lives, to demonstrate some fabricated superiority. NEX Introduces Military Star® Card Uniform Payment Plan for CPO Selects

The NEX has created a CPO (Sel) Uniform Payment Plan through the Military Star® Card which will allow CPO Selectees to charge their new required CPO uniforms to their Military Star Card. The Military Star® Card CPO (Sel) Uniform Payment Plan can only be used at NEX Uniform Stores. “We were looking for a way to make purchasing new Chief uniforms easier for our CPO selectees,” said Capt. Ed Spillman, Navy Exchange Service Command’s (NEXCOM) Deputy Commander, Military Services. “With the creation of the Military Star® Card CPO (Sel) Uniform Payment Plan, CPO Selectees can walk up to the cash register with their uniform purchases and charge them just like they would anything else in the NEX. First Class Petty Officers - Leading from the Front Story Provided by: First Class Association In order to understand what the First Class Association (FCA) is, you must understand what it means to be a First Class Petty Officer. We are deckplate leaders who are engaged in the day to day lives of our sailors. From the day we put on that third chevron, we are taught to take care of our people. As senior sailors, we are asked to promote our Navy Core Values and set the standard for our sailors to adhere to through personal example. To be a member of the association, you do not need any special qualifications and being a member will not help you to receive any prestigious awards. All that it requires is a desire to make things better than they were before you arrived and dedication to your fellow first classes. As a first line leader, it is our job to look out after the junior sailors under our charge, but as a member of the association, we are committed

to taking care of every sailor regardless of where they work or who they work for. The decision to join the FCA is an unwritten agreement stating that “you care about more than just your own career, your own division or your own department.” It is a stepping stone in the path to becoming a Chief Petty Officer, for it is in the first class association that we learn to network, to work together as a cohesive unit, to get the job done no matter how insurmountable the task may seem. Tony Peppers and Franco Garcia, represented the Sigonella Keystone Club at the Military European Keystone Conference. Boys & Girls Clubs on military bases have Keystone Clubs, which focus on leadership and service skills. The conference was made up of Keystone Teen Staff from all around Europe who got together to

discuss the future of their generation and how to ensure better opportunities for more life experience. The trip was more than just educational , as it allowed students to use it a new country and meeting new people and finding common interests. "My favorite part of the trip was meeting new people and talking to former 'Youth of the Year' winners, and getting to know the Real Deal of Keystone" said Peppers. Keystone is a premier teen leadership program which held the conference to promote discussion about future plans after High

school, College, and Job choices. Founded in 1964, Keystone meets teens' vitally important needs for positive group experiences. With the guidance of Boys & Girls Club staff, opportunities are provided to make leadership decisions, engage in academic and career experiences, and serve others. Peppers and Garcia came away from the Keystone with techniques to plan for the future after high school and the tools needed to get there. The next Keystone meeting will be held in Orlando, FL next summer and Peppers plans to attend after Fundraising and hard work.

Religious Festivals to be held in Mineo and Noto Make sure you mark on your calendar two must-see religious festivals taking place on Sunday, Aug. 29 and celebrating the patron saints of Mineo and Noto. Visitors attending those feste will discover the true soul of Sicily’s religious and folkloristic traditions. Every year, on the last two weekends of August, Mineo pays tribute to Santa Agrippina, (Saint Agrippina) its beloved patron saint, with religious processions, holy masses and a combination of fireworks and music shows. Saint Agrippina was a princess who was martyred by Roman Emperor Valerian in 256 AD because she was a Christian. According to tradition, the holy relics of Saint Agrippina arrived in Mineo on May 17, in the year 261 AD. The statue of the patron saint, which is preserved inside the town main church, will be carried through the city streets for veneration on Sunday, Aug. 29 from 8 p.m. until midnight. The "Pellegrinaggio dei Nudi" (Pilgrimage of the naked ones), which takes place in the town's center the night before (Aug. 28) at 7 p.m., is another highlight of this lively festival. Nudi are barefoot devotees dressed in white shorts and tshirts with a red sash and a black velvet belt. They are called "naked ones" because in the past they attended the processions by wearing only white "causi a tila" (underpants)

St. Agrippina Festival in Mineo when a terrible earthquake woke up Mineo's townspeople from their sleeps in 1693. Hundreds rushed into the streets wearing only their nightshirts and invoked Saint Agrippina for the cessation of the earthquake tremors. John Malkovich in the Infernal Comedy in Taormina Sigonella theatergoers will be happy to hear that, on Monday, Sept 6, the stage of Palazzo dei Congressi of Taormina will host “The Infernal Comedy, Confessions of a serial killer,” a play for orchestra, two sopranos (Louise Fribo / Laura Aikin and Aleksandra Zamojska) and an actor. Staged by Michael Sturminger and based on the true life story of Jack Unterweger, the play tells the story of a convicted murderer, who was eventually pardoned and became a renowned author and journalist as well as a brilliant example of rehabilitation. He was a serial killer who killed prostitutes in Vienna, Graz, Prague and Los Angeles. After disappearing from Vienna fleeing the United States, he was arrested in Miami and extradited to Austria where he committed suicide after being charged and convicted of having committed eleven murderers. Jack Unterweger, played by John Malkovich, has died, but from the hell he reads us his unpublished memoirs with winning fascination in order to promote himself and his literary work. The serial killer finally ensures that his memoirs could reveal the absolute truth, a solemn promise of a liar who says: "The first thing I learned was a smile and that smile was a lie." On the stage monologues alternate with the protagonist’s scenes acted along with singers. “I’m really fascinated by this mysterious figure of Jack

Unterweger. I am also fascinated by the combination of crime and contemporary classical music. Here I finally had the opportunity to play a really bad thing that I like very much,” said John Malkovich. When a dead serial killer returns to the stage to present his autobiography in a public reading, a comedy is not exactly what we are in for; but what are we demanding, anyway, if we are waiting to see a new opera/play about a murderer of women, for an orchestra on period instruments, two sopranos and one actor? The forecast changes completely if we learn that John Malkovich is going to play the role of Jack, who is launching his “Confessions of a serial killer”. Now we definitely expect the unexpected. That very anticipation made me bold enough to try to write the libretto, and it helped me to finish it within a few weeks. The beginning was simple. While performing easy jokes like a

stand-up comedian, Jack introduces his book, which flamboyantly he has called “The Infernal Comedy”. Having come that far, the writer only had to imagine what John’s Jack would be doing next; and what he did was look for the truth? Once the play was written it was a pure pleasure to direct, especially since the piece gave John room for improvisation in a literal way, which means continually improving it and making it better! Although staying perfectly faithful to direction, text and his partners on the stage, John, in every single rehearsal or performance, searched for new possibilities to surprise himself and us. Provide Security, a cyber security company, illustrated this danger with the Robin Sage Experiment. The experiment created fake Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn profiles under the alias, “Robin Sage.” A photo of a cute girl (borrowed from an adult website) and the job title “Cyber Threat Analyst” completed the fake profiles. From there, Thomas Ryan, co-founder & managing partner at Provide Security, posing as Robin, sent requests and established social network connections with more than 300 professionals in the National Security Agency, DoD, and Global 500 corporations. Robin’s new friends revealed information to Ryan that violated military operational security and personal security restrictions. “The worst compromises of operational security I had were troops discussing their locations and what time helicopters were taking off,” Ryan said during a phone conversation. People also sought Robin’s professional advice, invited her to dinners, and offered her job opportunities. But a prevailing wind caused the flames to spread rapidly devastating nearby fields, forests, towns and villages. Corrado fled panicking. An innocent peasant was accused of being the arsonist. Thus, he was tortured to confess a crime he did not commit, and eventually he was sentenced to death. As the poor man was ready to be executed, Conrad was stricken with remorse and confessed his guilt saving the poor man's life. Because of his noble origins, Corrado was spared death penalty. But he had to sell all his possessions to pay off the damaged property. Thus, Corrado became poor and retired as a Franciscan monk to a lonely hermitage near Piacenza, while his wife

From time to time, I have received a random friend request from a person I don’t know, usually accompanied by a profile picture of a pretty girl, but I have this rule of thumb: if I haven’t met you, we aren’t friends yet. Out of curiosity, I still like to confirm they are fake requests. You know, on the off chance it actually is a cute girl that found me out of the blue and is totally into me. Having low amounts of friends is my first clue, as is having only one entered the Order of Poor Clares. Later, he went to Rome to meet with Pope and eventually to Sicily. Later, in the evening, the Arca, a silver urn containing the saint remains, is carried shoulder high along the streets of Noto historic center. The procession begins at 7 p.m. from the Cathedral and proceeds throughout the historic heart of the city until the Crocifisso Church. A spectacular firework with music show will be held in piazza Municipio at 10 p.m. On Monday, Aug. 30, the festival will move to the "Lido di Noto," the coastal district of the town, with a concert of Italian rock singer Andrea Mingardi beginning at 10:30 p.m. Later, at 1 a.m., the festival will end with a breathtaking fireworks' show on the water. During the experiment, one person checked the alumni records of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), her claimed educational background, and this effort confirmed that MIT had no record of a Robin Sage. Having a friend you don’t know means virtually anyone could be monitoring your activities and the information in your posts, and if you post as much as some of my friends that means they’d know almost everything about your schedule right down to that “epic cheeseburger” you ate. Social media is a great tool for networking and communication, if the user is careful about the information he or she is sharing and who has the privileges to view it. So, for anyone hoping to be my friend in the social media realm, you’ll have to at least buy me dinner first. a Sicilian architect, designed the Arca in 1525. Throughout the centuries, several generations of Sicilian goldsmiths and silversmiths added fine decorations to the original model. The urn was eventually completed in 1848. The Arca is 6.2 feet tall and 24 inches wide. It weighs 880 pounds. It contains the saint's body and it is usually kept inside the Noto cathedral. After the 1990 earthquake, the Arca was moved to the nearby Church of San Carlo al Corso as the cathedral was damaged by the tremors. It will be preserved there until the cathedral is restored. Members from the local Confraternite (Confraternities) bring the traditional Cili and banners in procession while they are dressed in traditional costumes. A continuous stream of more than 4,000 people follows the procession. Cili are decorated iron bowls supported by a tall wooden stick, which contains a candle. They have been symbolizing the devotion shown to the saint after the fulfillment of a vow or pledge since the 1500s. Some fervent devotees still perform the traditional Viaggiu Scausu or "Barefoot Itinerary" both on the night before the festival and during the procession. That is a real proof of devotion and physical resistance, as it consists of following the main procession barefoot and walking for miles from the surrounding towns to the cathedral. Some residents, leaving from the surrounding cities, walk up to 15 miles to reach Noto and take part in the procession. Matt Knight Sigonella Public Affairs Officer To visit Villa Romana del Casale located outside of Piazza Armerina, Sicily, is to step back in time to the height of the Roman Empire's power and decadence. Time has taken a heavy toll on most of the buildings themselves, but what makes the site truly world class are the mosaics that cover the floors of the entire complex. The site is being actively restored and the majority of it has permanent structures and scaffolds in place which give onlookers a birds eye view of the magnificent mosaics. Each mosaic adorning the rooms of the expansive complex depict every aspect of Roman life from the Roman gods in the entryway to the â&#x20AC;&#x153;bikini girlsâ&#x20AC;? demonstrating athletic abilities in a back room. Site: The overall site rating is three stars. The three star rating is due to current construction at the site that has closed half of the mosaics from public viewing. When the construction is complete, Villa Romana del Casale will most certainly rate five stars. The site contains world class mosaics in pristine condition and a view of the Roman Empire not easily found anywhere else. The sheer scale of the complex is amazing with over 4200 square yards of mosaics covering the indoor and parts of the outdoor complex. Each room offers a new experience, allowing the viewer to be pulled into the complex mosaics that convey not only an image, but a story played out throughout the villa. The villa is relatively inexpensive to

view with a couple Euros parking fee and a three Euros entry fee per person which is pro-rated for the construction. There are gift shops on site as well as a cafĂŠ and restaurant. Family Friendly: Villa Romana Del Casale gets a two star rating for family friendliness because of several factors. There is only one bathroom on the complex and it is a five minute walk from the villa. The only access to the villa itself is from a steep staircase which leads to a path that goes to the villa. Once at the villa several narrow stairs have to be climbed to get on the scaffolding which allows the mosaics to be seen from above. These stairs and scaffolds are neither wheel chair nor stroller friendly and could be very difficult if accompanied by young children. Due to the stairs and some gravel walking paths a good pair of walking shoes is recommended. Accessibility: Villa Romana Del Casale gets three stars for accessibility due to the complexity of the drive. The number one piece of advice is do not try to use a GPS to locate the site. Several individuals have reported similar frustrating experiences with Garmin and TomTom units with the newest maps and yet still became very lost while the GPS unit directed them in circles once they were within ten minutes of the villa. Also, the Garmin unit likes to suggest taking SS 288, which is extremely scenic and does offer a beautiful and winding trip through Sicily, but greatly increases the difficulty of the drive with many narrow roads, and tight winding hillside turns. Go Green Sigonella! Alternative Transportation Article courtesy Debbie Hallahan, The Signature Volunteer No matter your motivation, there are plenty of good reasons to look into alternative methods of transportation. One of these may be political, to reduce our nation’s dependency upon foreign oil. Economics may be another motivation, with new technologies emerging opportunities for economic growth may be opening up. So what are we to do? We in the Sigonella community have a good variety of options. First, take a look at your current vehicle. Is there anything you could do to reduce fuel consumption and mileage? Ensuring it is properly maintained and making sure the correct air pressure is in the tires will help. Adjusting your driving habits may be necessary as well, such as reducing the number of trips between bases. You may be weighing the options of buying a new car. Purchasing a brand new car has many environmental pros and cons. Manufacturing takes a lot of raw materials, energy for operating production lines and use of toxic chemicals. However, learning about not only the vehicle you are interested in, but the environmental efforts of the companies you will be supporting through a purchase, and the latest research on the technologies they use will lead you to make the best environmental choice. But your options don’t end with your very

own POV. Carpooling, as we all know, is a great way to save gas and emissions. Unfortunately, it can be an inconvenience and many of us do not like to depend upon others to get from point A to point B. Clear communication with your carpooling buddy is important, as well as having a back up plan. Share the load by taking turns driving or working out a method to share the cost of gas. You can also look at the concept of carpooling as an opportunity to spend time with friends, make new ones, or to network. The bus is a cost-free alternative to driving. Bus schedules are located at each stop, or you can pick up your own copy at the Fleet and Family Support Center. This is a vital asset to our community which could be used more frequently. Although not for everyone, riding a motorcycle, or even a scooter is a great fuel saving alternative. Not sold on the idea? By riding a bike, one could knock out both the transportation issue and a little extra PT in one shot. These options have limitations, for example you won’t be able to pack a week’s worth of groceries on the back of a bike, but for the daily commute they are great. Whichever method you choose, reducing fuel consumption is quickly becoming a necessity for many people, regardless of location. It is a good step in the right direction while we endure this transitional phase to alternative fuels.

Two Comedians to Jox Pub Armed Forces Entertainment brings comedians, Tommy Davidson and Rob Maher, to Jox Pub on NAS II, at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, September 1. Tommy Davidson first became a household name during his time on the irreverent Fox Television show In Living Color, which ran from 1990 until 1993. While Davidson performed in a wide range of skits, his specialty was wicked impersonations of famous African American personalities, including Michael Jackson, M.C. Hammer, Spike Lee,

Sugar Ray Leonard, and Stevie Wonder. After the show went off the air, Davidson searched for a suitable venue to showcase his talents. He appeared on several television specials and in Hollywood comedies, including Booty Call (1997) and Woo (1998). While these films received mixed reviews, critics often pointed out that the scripts were at fault, rather than the performances.
