T
he rain held off March 16, as hundreds of Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella service and community members took to the pavement on a gorgeous Saturday for the annual Base 2 Base (B2B) Run/Walk, hosted by Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR). “When our registration ended [March 12], we had a tally of 353 runners,” Jill Lynch, director of MWR Fitness said. “This year having that many people sign-up to run and walk is phenomenal.” In keeping with the tradition of other endurance events, MWR offered NAS Sigonella runners and community members the opportunity to “carb-load” with a spaghetti dinner on March 15 in the Compass Room on NAS I. “We did the spaghetti dinner because I thought it would help build base morale and get everybody
together,” Lynch said. “It also gave them a little taste of the United States because a lot of times they do different types of dinners before big runs, so I thought it would be fun to add that little taste of America.” With this being Lynch’s first time coordinating the B2B, she wanted to incorporate some new and challenging aspects for the runners. “In previous years we’ve done the 7.6 miles straight from the Flightline Fitness Center on NAS II to NAS I in the Commons area,” Lynch said. “Before I came here I was lucky enough to experience an MWR half marathon in GITMO [Guantanamo Bay, Cuba], which was a phenomenal success and I thought it would be nice for people to be able to run a bit further here.” That experience gave Lynch the idea to extend the B2B run at Sigonella, adding a half marathon to the event.
“The extension we included took runners around the flightline which added an extra five and a half miles on NAS II before they leave the base,” Lynch said. “As they entered NAS I, they went around the full circle and back into the Commons area, which added the extra mile or so needed to create the half.” Being the biggest fitness event of the year for MWR, a lot of planning and coordination went into preparations leading up to the run. Along with the planning process and new extension to the course, MWR also incorporated the use of timing chips to accurately track times for the runners. This is the first year the chip has been used. They were tested in prior running events leading up to the B2B. “We started planning about four months ago,” Lynch said. “We were able to use money from last year B2B continued on Page 8

Direct Line NAS Sigonella Executive Officer, Cmdr. Eric Vosler In case you are too busy working to get outside, the first day of spring was on Wednesday and that brings warmer weather and plenty of Sicilian sun as we move through March. It was great to see the turnout for this year’s “Base 2 Base” 7.6 mile run and halfmarathon. I miei complimenti to MWR and everyone who worked behind the scenes to pull this event off – a special shout out to the Fil-Am Association and the last water stop before the end of the race. The participants in the Base 2 Base series get an excellent opportunity for fitness which is in line with the Secretary of the Navy’s 21st Century Sailor and Marine initiative designed to maximize Sailor and Marine personal
readiness, to maintain the resiliency of the force, and to hone the most combat effective force in the history of the Department of the Navy. With the continuing resolution and sequestration now in effect, events like these become more difficult to fund. Morale, Welfare and Recreation fall under similar budget constraints and, unfortunately, this will result in some shifts in schedules and availability of facilities and programs, as well as small price increases for things such as youth sports, bowling, Splashers Pool, etc. Please be patient as we work through these challenges. What hasn’t changed is the fact that the hard work, dedication, and the commitment each of you show
as a community is what makes Sigonella “The Hub of the Med.” We have made it through challenges before and this will be no exception. That said, spring and spring cleaning go hand in hand; however, this time I’m not talking about dusting, sweeping and mopping. The Skipper’s axiom of Refresh, Reset, and Renew is more relevant than ever. Now is the time! We need to look at the way we operate and ensure we are doing business in the most efficient and cost effective way. In this time of fiscal uncertainty, we have to manage these changes while minimizing risks to our community and our mission. As many of you have noticed, we have managed to save several hundreds of thousands

What’s Happening Around NAS Sigonella The Hoplites, Sigonella's rugby team, traveled to Malta March 16 to compete against the Malta National Rugby team. The Hoplites came out of the blocks fast, pinning Malta down in their own half for the first five minutes. Malta pegged back three points, and took the lead after 10 minutes. Malta continued to turn up the pressure and at the end of the first half, the score was 23-21 with the Hoplites just two points behind. The final score was Malta - 61, Sigonella Hoplites - 21. of dollars by ensuring we are operating within the fiscal parameters authorized by CNIC. Take time to look around and if something doesn’t make sense, bring it to someone’s attention. It’s not only necessary to make the required cuts, but it’s also the right thing to do; we owe it to ourselves, the taxpayers, to make sure we are using tax dollars in the smartest and most effective way possible. Enjoy the spring, the improving weather and remember to think and act safely. Buona Giornata!

Sigonella Swordfish celebrate season by tracey bonvie Sigonella Swordfish
They say all good things must come to end. This can be said of the 2012-2013 Sigonella Swordfish swim season. On President’s Day weekend, thirty swimmers from the Sigonella Swordfish traveled to Eindhoven, The Netherlands, for the European Forces Swim League (EFSL) Championships. Every year, nineteen swim teams from military installations in Europe come together to compete in their league’s Championship swim meet. The Sigonella Swordfish swimmers did an outstanding job representing not only their team, but their community, at the EFSL Championships. Of the thirty swimmers who qualified, it was the first time for thirteen of these swimmers to compete at this level. For many of these thirteen swimmers, this was their first year swimming competitively. The seventeen returning qualifiers exemplified the spirit of competition and sportsmanship for their fellow Swordfish and newly qualified swimmers. It was a weekend of exceptional swimming with many Swordfish receiving medals and ribbons for their events, and many more earning new personal best times. On March 16, the Swordfish family came together for one last time to celebrate all of the accomplishments of the swimmers during this past swim season. Coach Tracey Bonvie, Coach John Youberg, Coach D.J. Naaktgeboren, and Coach Michael Bowling were able to highlight each swimmers accomplishments throughout the season. The swimmers had their fill of pizza and bowling after the awards ceremony to cap-off the fun filled evening and to celebrate together, their amazing season.
NATO’s largest Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) exercise, Proud Manta 13, came to a close on the 6th of March in resounding fashion at the Italian Officer’s Club aboard Naval Air Station, Sigonella. At the event crews from Patrol Squadron FOUR, a U.S. Navy P-3 squadron and exercise participant, came together with aircrew and Sailors from Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Norway, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom to celebrate the safe execution of approximately 550 ASW mission hours and regale each other with stories of ASW prosecution around the globe. The celebration wasn’t, however, just about having a good time. More importantly, it helped to strengthen NATO Response Force (NRF) partnerships and reinforce each nation’s commitment to ASW interoperability in the maritime domain. Additionally, it served as an informal arena for participants to debrief each other on their own personal experiences, generating important insight on how to make future combined efforts more effective. Lt. j.g. Chandler Hasemeyer, a Navigator/Communicator in VP-4, noted that “at the celebration I gained real world insight on how to conduct safe and effective joint ASW that you just can’t learn from the books. These men and women are true professionals in every sense of the word.” As the evening came to a close, the icing on the cake for all attendees was the realization that in less than two weeks time they had collectively conducted real world training on more submarines than most operators will fly on over the course of an entire career. “What an outstanding exercise from start to finish! The lessons learned will stay with me for the rest of my career in Maritime Patrol Aviation,” noted Lt. Dave Sullivan.

You have heard the buzz about a new, improved transition program called Transition Goals, Plan, Success (Transition GPS), but here is a littlebackground just to be sure you have all the latest information. Transition GPS complies with the president’s plan (under the VOW Act) to reduce veteran unemployment and augment transition support. Service members must not only complete a pre-separation counseling checklist – something that has been mandatory – but must also attend the Transition GPS fiveday workshop. The new workshop includes a standardized program with extensive military-tocivilian skills review, financial planning, Department of Labor (DOL) job search skills building and VA briefings. Additionally, optional courses will be offered to enhance the pursuit of higher education, technical training or entrepreneurship. The crux of the entire program is something called "Career Readiness Standards" (CRS). The pre-separation counseling and Transition GPS workshop work together to improve service members’ preparedness for the next phase of their lives in the civilian world. This is measured by the CRS. These standards ensure service members reach a pinnacle of readiness for the civilian workforce. Some of the CRS are relatively
simple to fulfill and measure, such as registering for eBenefits. Other CRS require more effort from the service member; for example, evaluating the demand of a particular job (occurs during the Military Occupation Code (MOC) crosswalk portion of the five-day workshop) and preparing a full job application package which includes resume and references. So how do commands and staff know if a service member has accomplished their CRS? Transition GPS provides service members with an Individual Transition Plan (ITP) which documents their progress through the transition process. The ITP helps service members identify their goals regarding education and training, employment and financial health, so they can better plan the transition of their military skillsets into the civilian workforce and experience greater success quickly. The CRS are embedded in each ITP. Command Career Counselors and Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) staff review the ITP during the transition process. At the conclusion, service members present their ITP at a capstone event for evaluation, to make sure the CRS have been met. Military and family members are sure to be career-ready when they transition out of the military.

Pope Francis greets faithful at the Vatican, Sunday, March 17, 2013. Pope Francis began his first Sunday as pontiff by making an impromptu appearance to the public from a side gate of the Vatican, startling passersby and prompting cheers, then kept up his simple, spontaneous style by delivering a brief, off-the-cuff homily at the Vatican's tiny parish church. Dressed only in white cassock, Francis waved to the crowd in the street outside St. Anna's Gate and before entering the church, which serves Vatican City State's hundreds of residents, he shook hands of the parishioners and kissed babies. New Pope gets up close with audience by herald-review.com
VATICAN CITY - Walking up to crowds, shaking hands with surprised bystanders in the street, mixing his formal speeches with off-the-cuff remarks, Pope Francis stamped his own style on the papacy on Sunday, March 17. His humor and down-to-earth manner captivated those filling St. Peter's Square in Rome to overflowing, and he worked the crowd in a way that had to give his security staff palpitations. Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno, in the square himself, estimated the crowd's size at 300,000. "Brothers and sisters, buon giorno," Francis said in Italian in his first welcome from the window of the papal residence, setting an informal tone that has become the defining spirit of his young papacy. Earlier Sunday, he made an impromptu appearance before the public from a side gate of the Vatican that startled passers-by and prompted cheers as he shook hands and kissed babies. Francis had just finished celebrating Mass and delivering a six-minute homily - brief by church standards - in the Vatican's tiny parish church, St. Anna, when he walked outside to greet parishioners one by one, just as an ordinary pastor does after weekly services. Francis started speaking at the window even before the stroke of noon - the appointed time for the weekly papal address. The windows of the papal study in the Apostolic Palace were opened for the first time since Francis' predecessor, Benedict XVI, gave his last Sunday blessing Feb. 24. Four days later, Benedict went into retirement, the first pontiff to do so in nearly 600 years. Francis was elected Wednesday, March 13 and has been staying in a hotel on the Vatican's premises until the papal apartment is ready. "The pope is down-to-earth. He is a people person and it is amazing," said Emanuel Anatsui from Britain. "He is going to do wonderfully for the church." After Mass, Francis again put his security detail to the test as he waded into an intersection
just outside St. Anna's Gate. Francis stepped up to the crowd, grasping outstretched hands. The atmosphere was so casual that several people even gripped Francis on the shoulder. "Francesco! Francesco!" children shouted his name in Italian. As he patted one little boy on the head, he asked "Are you a good boy?" and the child nodded. "Are you sure?" the pope quipped. At one point, he glanced at his watch and turned to an aide - as if to ask ''How much time do I have?" The pope then ducked back inside the Vatican's boundaries to dash upstairs for the address to St. Peter's Square. Often abandoning the prepared text in his hand, Francis told the crowd that he wanted to talk about mercy, saying he was inspired by a book about forgiveness that he was reading. Citing the author, an elderly German cardinal, and praising him as a "top-notch" theologian, Francis quipped: "Don't think I'm making publicity for my cardinals' books!" drawing a roar of laughter from the crowd. Francis said mercy can "change the world" and make it "less cold and more just." He spoke only in Italian - ending with "Buon pranzo" (Have a good lunch) - a wish that triggered nods of approval from the crowd in Rome, where a leisurely Sunday family lunch is a cherished tradition. But Francis did tweet in English and other languages, saying: "Dear friends, I thank you from my heart and I ask you to continue to pray for me." Past pontiffs have used the Sunday window greetings to offer brief reflections and wishes in several languages. Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said Francis would likely stick with Italian, a language he's comfortable with for spontaneous remarks. Lombardi left open the possibility the 76-yearold pope would use other languages in future public appearances.
During his window speech, Francis also talked about of his family's root in Italy's northwestern Piedmont region. He told the crowd that by naming himself as pope after St. Francis of Assisi, an Italian patron saint, he was "strengthening my spiritual tie with this land, where, as you know, my family has its origins." The crowd was cheering wildly when Francis appeared at the window, but fell into rapt silence when he began to speak. Some people's eyes welled up. Many people waved the blue-and-white flag of Argentina, the pope's homeland. Some people held their children aloft or on their shoulders to get a better look. "We are so proud. He is Argentine, but also belongs to the rest of the world," said Ivana Cabello, 23, of Argentina. Carreon, a 41-yearold Rome resident originally from the Philippines, ventured that Francis "looks like John Paul II." "I hope he is like him," she said. "He has a heart." The globe-trotting Polish-born John Paul II, who died in 2005, loved to charm the crowds. Several hundred extra traffic police were deployed Sunday to control crowds and vehicles for Francis' first window speech as well as the annual Rome marathon. Bus routes were rerouted and many streets were closed off to channel the curious and the faithful up the main boulevard from the Tiber River to St. Peter's Square. Giant video screens were set up so the huge crowd could get a close look at Francis, and dozens of medical teams were on hand for any emergencies. In the last hour before noon, a large backup formed of people trying to squeeze through three openings in the fence ringing the front of the square. But by the time Francis appeared, all had calmly found a viewing spot. Among Francis' first formal meetings is an appointment today with Argentine President Cristina Fernandez. That will provide an opportunity to see if the new pope's easygoing manner still holds the two have been on opposite sides for many years. As Buenos Aires archbishop, Francis had lobbied hard against the government's move to legalize gay marriage and make contraceptives available for free. On Tuesday, March 18, Fernandez joined other world leaders and senior international envoys, including U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and the president of Jesuit-run Georgetown University, for Francis' formal installation as pope.

Thousands of devotees attend the spectacular Good Friday procession which is annually held in the picturesque town of Pietraperzia to remember the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the Cross. This year the festival will be held on March 29. (Photo by www.criluge.it)
Pietraperzia to host Good Friday Religious Festival by Rebecca Taylor
Good Friday commemorates the day Jesus was crucified, suffered and died. It is an important and very solemn Christian holiday. Many Sicilian towns hold Good Friday observances, but the tradition of Pietraperzia, located in the province of Enna near Caltanisetta, is unique. The name of the observance is "Lu Signuri di li Fasci," which is Sicilian for "Our Lord of the Bands." The bands, or "fasci," are long strips of white linen cloth which are attached to the end of a tall, wooden mast; a crucifix is then mounted onto the mast. The entire assembled construction, called a "fercolo," is then raised upright in a dramatic moment and carried through the town at the head of a procession. Pietraperzia currently has about 7,300 residents. Its population has shrunk over the past century; many "pietrini," as the residents of Pietraperzia are called, emigrated in the early years of the 20th century. But each year some of those who have moved away return to Pietraperzia to participate in their hometown ceremony. And some of those who cannot be present will call a family member or friend and listen to the raising of the "fercolo" over the phone. Pietraperzia has held a procession of the crucifix on Good Friday for well over 200 years. After hours of busy preparation, the spectacular procession of the cross begins around 8 p.m. on March 29 and lasts through late night crossing all the main road of the town’s historic center.
Palermo - Even the Mafia is not immune to the lingering recession, according to new reports that suggest a merciless spending review is causing serious discontent in Sicily's Cosa Nostra. The axe, which is falling chiefly on hand-outs to junior mobsters, family members and hangers-on, has exacerbated the fall in "earnings" already taking place thanks to a police blitz on extortion rackets. Only the big Mafia bosses will be spared the social security cuts. Those worst affected have been the relatives of jailed mobsters, prompting their wives and girlfriends to lead the backlash, Italian press reports said. The insight into the mob's own financial crisis has been illustrated by wiretaps of Palermo's Noce clan, based in the centre of the Sicilian capital. This section of the Mafia was particularly hard hit last October in a series of raids organised by Palermo's three anti-Mafia magistrates - Francesco Del Bene, Lia Sava and Gianluca De Leo - which saw 41 Mafia suspects arrested. La Repubblica says this brought Cosa Nostra "to its knees" in its Sicilian heartland. In one of the telephone calls recorded by investigators, the wife of a recently jailed mobster is heard complaining about the financial situation to a female friend in a similar position. "I have to look after myself, I have to look after my husband and I have to look after my children," she said. "November, December, January and then I didn't seen anyone. It's not right that they abandon my husband." Significantly, she went on to say that she intended to go right to the top and speak to clan boss Renzo Lo Nigro, who assumed the role after the October raids. Mr Lo Nigro was one of six people held this morning as a result of the surveillance. A couple of years ago it was predicted that organised crime in Italy might prosper from the economic downturn, with the likelihood that businesses caught in the credit crunch would be forced to accept offers of finance from underworld sources. But the new claims appear to back earlier reports that suggested many mobsters were being hit hard by the drawn-out recession. Mafia expert and author Corrado De Rosa, who has just published Mafia da Legare (Mad Mafia) with the journalist Laura Galesi, said the news of the Mafia spending cuts underlined how the mob acted as "an anti-state, alternative welfare system". But he added the willingness of Mafia wives to speak out marked a major departure. "Twenty years ago... this would never have happened."
Concern grows as 200 of Naples’ churches are either closed or abandoned (Italy Magazine)
The report suggests that the churches are in a state of neglect because of mismanagement by the authorities including national and local government, the Church and the Ministry of Culture. The report asserts that there are cases where planned restoration works have not been carried out. Among the churches the newspaper lists as being in a state of disrepair are the garbage-littered Sant’Antonio alla Vicaria and the S. Maria Vertecoeli that has a damaged roof open to the elements. The damning report comes after a petition circulated in late 2012 calling for Naples to be stripped of the UNESCO World Heritage Site status it gained 17 years ago. Signed by leading intellectuals and 16 civic committees, the petition was accompanied by a photographic dossier documenting neglected buildings in the city. The report also highlights the illegal traffic of artistic treasures such as candleholders, frescoes, statues, and even marble fonts. Police from the Nucleo Tutela Patrimonio (Heritage Protection Centre) have had success in recovering looted
artworks, but the report raises the concern that leaving the churches in disrepair makes them possible prey for thieves.
Italy Has Its Youngest Parliament In History With More Women Than Ever (Italy Magazine)
Italy’s recently elected politicians are younger than ever and there are more women among them than ever before. According to data published by the National Confederation of Active Farmers, Coldiretti, the average age of those preparing to take their seats in Parliament and the Senate on 15 March is 48. It is 45 in the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house, and 53 in the Senate, the upper house, thanks mostly to the presence of members of the MoVimento 5 Stelle (5 Star Movement, M5S) led by Beppe Grillo. In the last parliament, the average in the lower house was 54, and in the Senate it was 57. The parliamentary group with the lowest average age is the M5S, at 37 years old – 33 in the lower house and 46 in the Senate. It is ahead of the Lega Nord (Northern League) at 45 years old – 42 in the lower house and 48 in the Senate. For the Partito Democratico (PD), the average age is 49 – 47 in the lower house and 54 in the Senate. For the Sinistra Ecologia Libertà (Left Ecology Freedom, SEL), it is 47 – 46 in the lower house and Senate 50. For Con Monti per l’Italia (With Monti for Italy), it is 55 – 55 in the lower house and 56 in the Senate. For the Popolo della Libertà (People of Freedom, PdL), it is 54 – 50 in the lower house and 57 in the Senate. Women now have a greater presence in the legislature, an increase of 11% from the last parliament – the lion’s share being members of the PD led by Pier Luigi Bersani at 41%. In the last parliament, women formed 21% of members in the lower house and 19% in the Senate. In the new parliament, they form 32% of the lower house and 30% of the Senate. Among the major parties, the largest number of women come from the PD with 41%, ahead of the M5S’s 38%, the PdL’s and With Monti for Italy’s 22% each, the SEL’s 20%, and the Northern League’s 14%. A woman is also the youngest parliamentary candidate: 25-year-old Marta Grande won a seat in the lower house under the banner of the M5S in Lazio. The oldest member is 89-year-old Sergio Zavoli, a PD candidate in the Senate for Campania.
FAI Spring Open Day across Italy (Wantedinrome)
Some 700 libraries, stately homes, archaeological sites and religious buildings all over Italy are open to the public free of charge on 23 and 24 March, for the 21st annual spring open day organised by the Fondo Ambiente Italiano (FAI). Many of the participating sites are not normally accessible to the public. In Rome some of the treats on offer include a peek inside Palazzo dell'Aeronautica, built in the early 1930s to accommodate Italy's nascent air force; Palazzo Antonelli which includes a Busiri Vici chapel built for the Duchess of Saxony and a painting attributed to Luca Giordano; the spectacular Casa dell'Architettura, a one-time aquarium that has been home to the House of Architecture since 1984; the sumptuous rooms of Palazzo Spada, the seat of the Council of State; and the barracks of the Corazzieri on the Quirinal hill, where visitors can explore the stables, armor hall and the chapel of the Italian president's honorary guards. The complete list of participating buildings and monuments, as well as their visiting times, can be seen on the FAI website, while an App is also available to download. Those who wish to support the work of FAI can make a donation of €2 by texting 45501 between 11 and 24 March. Similar to Britain’s National Trust, FAI works to preserve and promote Italy’s cultural heritage through education, restoration and annual open days. On 28 February FAI launched a UK branch to spread awareness and foster appreciation of Italy's national heritage for lovers of Italy living in Britain.

to get the chips. They came in about two months ago so we’ve had time to figure them out. We were also able to post the runner’s individual times online faster this year.” After the race, runners were able to wind down with a cook-out and a St. Patrick’s Day themed live music event on NAS I. “Since it was St. Patrick’s Day weekend, we were lucky enough to have The Rogues, who played Celtic music after the run,” Lynch said. “Public Works did a food fundraiser, serving chili dogs and fries, while Connections was open for St. Patrick’s Day refreshments.” Lynch and the rest of the MWR staff and volunteers could not have imagined a better way to jump start St. Patrick’s Day weekend and know that it took the effort of the entire community to make the B2B Run/Walk happen. “Overall, it went great and I cannot say enough about our volunteers,” Lynch said. “I feel like the community really pulled together and came out to cheer each other on. There were so many people who came out from all over the base who did a fantastic job and we could not have done this without them.”

After what could have been the craziest and most unpredictable regular season ever, the 2013 NCAA March Madness Tournament brackets are set. With these brackets come intriguing matchups and storylines that could make this tournament one for the ages. I was awake until 3 a.m., Sunday, March 17, reviewing the potential matchups and possible upsets. Here is the breakdown, region-by-region with predictions and your 2013 NCAA men’s basketball champion! MIDWEST REGION Breakdown – So much for being the number one overall seed as Louisville has been put in the toughest region imaginable. Two weeks ago, Duke was talked about as a number one seed and you can never count out Tom Izzo’s Spartans come tournament time. Along with conference tournament winners St. Louis, Memphis and Oregon, this region is full of talented players and Hall of Fame caliber coaches which can lead to some legendary games. Winner – [LOUISVILLE] Those who know me will call me out as a bias supporter of the Cardinals. I am from Louisville and have followed the Cards this season including their dominating run in the Big East tournament. I also think those critics agree that Louisville is playing the best among any team right now and if you look at recent history, hot teams entering the tournament [Kentucky last year and UCONN in 2011] continue to play at the highest of levels in games heading into the Final Four. With an experienced and
hunger-driven team coming off a Final Four appearance last season, along with the best in-game adjuster on the head coaching level in Rick Pitino, Louisville will take advantage of great geographical gamesites [Lexington, KY and Indianapolis, IN] in route to another Final Four appearance. Upset Special – [Oregon over Oklahoma State] The Ducks are playing well and this 2nd round match-up will have plenty of fireworks. Cowboy’s players Marcus Smart, Le’Bryan Nash and Markel Brown are great wing players who can score from anywhere on the court. However Oregon boasts tremendous guard play and can speed up the tempo with Dominic Artis and Johnathan Loyd. Look for a high scoring game in San Jose [Close to Oregon] and a Ducks victory. WEST REGION Breakdown – I actually think this part of the bracket is tougher than most believe. Gonzaga has one of the best players [Kelly Olynyk] in the country as part of an experienced front court. Ohio State is on a roll right now while New Mexico with Tony Snell and Kendall Williams is this year’s talented team that nobody is talking about. Other teams worth recognizing in this bracket are Kansas State with premier wing Rodney McGruder and Wisconsin who always seems to come out of nowhere to make a Sweet 16 run. Winner – [OHIO STATE] The Buckeyes lost last year to Kansas in the Final Four and will use that experience as a tool
to drive this year’s team. Aaron Craft has added an element to his game and is no longer a pesky on-ball defender only. His ability to get to the rim and play physical against bigger opponents gives the Buckeyes offense another component to match with Big Ten leading scorer, Deshaun Thomas. I don’t feel completely confident in this pick, but I do think the emergence of key role players [LaQuinton Ross, Sam Thompson and Amir Williams] make the Buckeyes a deep and loaded team who can look at their bench for contributors in any matchup. Upset Special – [Belmont over Arizona] Although this game is in Salt Lake City and Arizona has superior talent, there are few teams in the country who can shoot the rock like the Bruins. Averaging over 77 points per game (ppg) and shooting just under 50 percent this year, the Bruins have the ability to run away with this game early. Led by Ian Clark [18 ppg] and Kerron Johnson [13 ppg], there’s no reason Belmont can’t beat the underachieving Wildcats. SOUTH REGION Breakdown – This is a close bracket with the possibility of a lot of matchups going down to the wire. Storied programs like Kansas, Georgetown, Florida, Michigan, UCLA, and North Carolina rule this bracket. However, darling teams like VCU[2011 Final Four Run], San Diego State, Minnesota and South Dakota State have the players, tools and maybe some magic to cause havoc in the South Region.
Winner – [FLORIDA] Although I spoke highly of the multiple Cinderella teams in this bracket when it really comes down to a run at the Final Four, experience and coaching mean more to a team than a little magic. Florida returns most of their squad back from a team that almost made it to the Final Four last season. Kenny Boyton, Patric Young and Erik Murphy have been through plenty of tough games together and know how to pull through. This year’s team has dealt with injuries and struggles in the second half of games. However, they are healthy again and key role players [Mike Rosario, Will Yeguete, Scottie Wilbekin and Casey Prather] will contribute in this year’s run, pushing the Gators to Atlanta. Upset Special – [South Dakota State over Michigan] Nate Wolters! If you haven’t already heard his name, prepare to. This kid can flat out score! Not saying Wolters’ [22 ppg] will go ‘Steph Curry’ this year, but he will score a lot against a Wolverine team who outside of Trey Burke has to refer to Webster’s for the definition of defense. EAST REGION Breakdown – This bracket has two high caliber teams [Indiana and Miami] plus a lot of potential for upsets. Colorado over Illinois, California over UNLV and don’t count Davidson out against Marquette. Plus, I’m predicting right here and now, Syracuse will bounce Indiana out in the Sweet 16; and those games aren’t even my upset special! TIPPED continued on Page 15

MARCH 22, 2013 TIPPED Continued from Page 10
Winner – [MIAMI] The low side of the bracket was setup perfectly for the Hurricanes and Shane Larkin is the best pure point guard in the country (I said it Michigan fans!). Miami is a tough draw to follow because they have an experienced team (five seniors) with a talented point guard who’s playing like a senior. However, none and I mean not a single one of their players has ever stepped on the court during tournament time. I still think Jim Larranaga [Coached George Mason’s 2006 Final Four Run] plus an experienced team with nothing to lose, equals a spot in the Final Four. Upset Special – [Bucknell over Butler] Usually it’s Butler over some powerhouse team for an upset bid. Not this year! The Bulldogs are well known and the Bison, well not so much. Get used to hearing the name Mike Muscala who averages 19 points and 11 rebounds per game. Butler has not been playing particularly well of late and Bucknell rolled through their conference tournament winning by an average of over 10 ppg. This time, the Butler didn’t do it! FINAL FOUR So here we are with Louisville vs. Ohio State and Florida vs. Miami for a spot at the National Title. Let’s do it! The ‘Ville’ has two of the more productive guards [Peyton Siva and Russ Smith] in the country and what makes both of them so good is they don’t stop! On defense or offense, their motors are running the entire game, unless they’re on the bench. Give me that on top of good role players any day! Louisville’s pressure defense shuts down Thomas, frustrates the frustrating Craft and goes to the finals. Which brings us the battle for the sunshine state and no this isn’t a football game. Florida isn’t a surprise team here, but Miami is. The Hurricanes should not be in this game and will use that talk as fuel for motivation to knock off the Gators in what could be a classic. Larkin will put his name up for next year’s Player of the Year race early with a career game of 20 plus points and over 10 assists as he slices and dices his way through the jaws of the Gator defense. It all comes down to this; the upsets, stand-out performances and amazing buzzer beaters have led to this moment. Louisville vs. Miami for a shot at glory! This is the 75th year of March Madness and what a way to end it. Everyone knows the number one saying in sports, ‘Defense wins championships.’ That adage could not be more accurate this year. Louisville wins holding Miami under 40 percent field goal shooting for the game while forcing Larkin to commit more turnovers than he has all year. The Cards score just enough with guards Siva, Smith, Luke Hancock and Kevin Ware while Chane Behanan, Montrezl Harrell and Gorgui Dieng contain Kenny Kadji and Reggie Johnson down low. Reliable Russ’diculous’ Smith hits late game free-throws as the Cards pull away at the end to give Louisville an 80-74 win and Coach Pitino his first national title with the Cards! There you have it, as identified earlier these are only predictions. Everyone knows anything can happen once the ball is tipped, but it’s shaping up to be a memorable tournament with more teams closely paired together than years past. Expect the unexpected, watch those glass slippers and prepare for the Madness Sigonella! March is here.

NAPLES, Italy – Installations in Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia (EURAFSWA) will participate in Exercise Reliant Defense 2013 (RD-12) March 25-28, one of several annual Navy security training exercises taking place worldwide. The exercise stresses areas of the Navy’s anti-terrorism program to train Navy security forces and refine force protection responses to potential threats to installations and units. (“Navy installations overseas provide critical support to our nation’s operational forces. They also provide a secure home for the families of those forces. Exercises such as RELIANT DEFENSE allow installations to train realistically and ensure readiness to continue that support to mission and families in extremis scenarios,” stated CAPT Eric Gardner, Chief of Staff Navy Region EURAFSWA.) All six Navy installations throughout Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia will execute the exercise in collaboration with Region headquarters in Naples, Italy. Participants will include Navy Region EURAFSWA; Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples, Italy; Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy; NSA Bahrain; NSA Souda Bay, Greece; Naval Station Rota, Spain; and Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti. “The exercise development team created a training environment for responders to practice how they would act in an emergency. We will simulate events to test responders’ ability to save lives, protect property, and maintain the mission,” said Tracey Murdock, Region’s program director for Training and Readiness. During the exercise, installation and Region personnel will rehearse reporting and tactical procedures. Personnel will practice relaying data to decision makers in order to improve coordination. Local communities around the bases may be affected due to the exercise, but the Navy is committed to minimizing traffic congestion and any other problems that may result. “The purpose of the training is to practice procedures and find areas to improve,” said Murdock. “Responders will demonstrate their ability to share information, increase force protection measures, and relocate their emergency operations center to conduct command and control from a back-up location.” Navy Region EURAFSWA delivers efficient and effective shore service support to U.S. and allied forces operating in the Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia area of responsibility.
