NAS Sigonella Community volunteers for beach clean-up By MCSA Brian Glunt NPASE
Walk a mile in their shoes
Over 40 volunteers of service members from Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella, their dependents and Italian local residents, volunteered for a community relations (COMREL) project on Sept. 30 to pick up trash at a local beach and fish market in Acitrezza. The event was organized by Culinary Specialist 1st Class Christopher Lizzio, a resident of Acitrezza. With the help of Dott. Alberto Lunetta, NAS Sigonella’s deputy public affairs officer, Lizzio invited the base’s community to volunteer. “I think this is a great event,” said Palmina LaRosa, COMREL volunteer and director of Giga Language School of Catania. “I have been living here in Acitrezza for over 20 years now and we really support these kinds of events and BEACH, continued on page 12

Breast Cancer Awareness Walk to be held By MCSN Cameron Bramham NAS Sigonella Public Affairs
U.S. Naval Hospital Sigonella and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) are teaming up Oct. 15 at Marinai Housing for the annual “Walk the Pink Out of it” Breast Cancer Awareness Walk. The walk is the second in the base to base series event hosted by MWR. “I like this kind of event because we get to team up with MWR for the same focus,” Health Promotion Assistant Giuseppe Licari said. “The focus is to ask people to come out and join us for something that is very important for women, for survivors and for family members.” The event is a two-mile course that begins in the Marinai Housing Complex. “Our plan is to have two of our providers there to speak to raise people’s awareness of this event and to have an information table set-up, too,” Head of Health Promotion and Nutrition Department at Naval Hospital Sigonella, Cmdr. Alice Whitley said. “Last year, families came out with strollers, babies, dogs and everything else so we had a wonderful time and we hope to have another great turnout this year.” One of the providers, Naval Hospital Sigonella Radiologist, Cmdr. William McCullough is speaking on the importance of regular check-ups and mammograms.
“It’s important to remind women 30 years and older to start receiving annual screening and mammograms to look for breast cancer,” McCullough said. “Ideally we want to find breast cancer early. My involvement with the walk will be to encourage women to come in, as well as encouraging family members to encourage each other to get annual screenings.” For Whitley, this event is one of the most important for Sigonellans. “This will be the third year that I have participated in our walk in order to promote the prevention of breast cancer awareness and to raise our community’s awareness of this event as well,” Whitley said. “We have been partnering with MWR for each of these events and last year was the first year MWR put it (the walk) in as a part of their base to base walk/run series.” The main goal for Health Promotions and MWR is to get the word out about breast cancer and make Sigonellans aware. “We want to heighten everybody’s awareness to take preventive measures so that 1) they can prevent it, and 2) if they do get it, we want early detection so we can provide the necessary treatments for both men and women,” Whitley said. “We want to make sure that everyone is aware of this and that we provide services and we are here to support them as well as their family members. To make sure WALK, continued on page 12

Effective Leadership
Olive harvesting
Have a wacky talent?
To be an effective leader, one must learn how to influence behaviors. Chaplain Kennedy explores this in Sigonella’s Religious Ministries Department monthly column.
Every year around this time, olive farmers get ready to reap the benefits of the meticulous grooming of their olive trees. But how do they get the oil from the olive? Find out here!
MWR is looking for the biggest talent in Sigonella. It could be you! Find out how to register for this event and the requirements.

Direct Line I want to make sure that we answer the questions we received during Feedback Live, but I first want to thank our special guests Capt. Bruce Black from NCTS, Lt. Col. Paul Wojtowicz from Global Hawk, and Cmdr. Jeffrey Schmidt from DLA for appearing on this month’s show as part of the kick off for the 2011 Combined Federal Campaign. We challenge each and every one of you to answer the call and “Make a difference.” I also encourage all of you – if you haven’t already – get your tickets for the Navy Ball coming up in one week on the 22nd of October. Each year seems to always be better than the last and if you were there last year, you won’t want to miss it! Please see your department Navy Ball Committee member for details. A reminder to everyone that Feedback Live is a LIVE call in show. This is your opportunity to get your questions answered live on the air by myself and the CMC Graham. I want to make sure that we answer all your questions and concerns, so I’ll answer them in this Direct Line. Q1. Why are the pet laws not enforced? I see many residents that
NAS SigoNellA executive officer, cmdr. eric voSler
allow their pets in areas that are not permitted, many owners’ pets run loose throughout housing and many owners do not properly take care of their pets or turn them loose upon leaving. It is very frustrating to see such lack of animal care and support from the military community in protecting our animals. A1. Security will respond for any pet related incident and also to any stray animal report. Pet owners are responsible for the care, supervision, and maintenance of their petsplease be responsible pet owners. As we stressed during National Night Out, Security cannot be everywhere at all times and we frequently rely on calls/notifications from the community. If anyone sees stray or loose animals on the facility, please report it. Q2. The Marinai Housing community receives paper notices from the housing office pinned between the plastic face and base of the front door bell. Very frequently the notices fall out and are blown away or lost, which can cause all manner of problems with the residents...such as Sept. 26, when the mosquito spraying truck drove through Marinai and many of the residents, in-
cluding myself, were unaware it was coming and unable to prepare for the visit (such as closing windows and removing baby toys/dog toys from outside). I would like to ask if a new method of communication from the housing office to the residents could be added, such as a master email list or using tape to secure the notices to the front doors of residents’ homes. A2. The Lessor is required, by lease, to advise residents in writing, in advance, when they perform pest control (spraying). This is not performed by Housing. Housing currently utilizes both flyers and email communications to advise residents of important information. Housing will ensure that our flyers are placed between the screen door and the front door, and not under doorbells, to avoid them “flying away” and we will request that the Lessor does the same. In the event that residents notice that spraying is being done without their knowledge, please contact the Housing Office. We will contact NAVFAC to discuss/remedy issues with the Lessor. Q3. Why are the playgrounds in housing still closed? Almost 50% are
still closed, and have been closed since late May. What were the kids supposed to do when the parks are closed? Why were these problems not thought of when the original contract was awarded, and why did the contractor start all these jobs at once – why not start one and finish it then go to the next playground? A3. All of the playgrounds in Marinai are currently operational. Four of the nine playgrounds will be closed, one at a time, for a few days within the upcoming month, for minor maintenance (repairing holes that were cut in the tiles around the equipment). The remaining playgrounds will receive their tile replacement one at a time to ensure that we do not have several playgrounds closed at once. Q4. Recently at the commissary, they have only been opening two registers at the self service check out. Around lunch time when people come in to just grab a few things it seems the line ends up backing up
into the frozen food section. It doesn’t take any extra manpower to have all four open, is there a reason only two are open? A4. Sorry for the long line at lunch, we must have had a few people out sick or on leave, we’ll watch & cover this better. We also use Register 1 & sometimes 2 for quick lunch time check out with purchase of a few items.
Smooth Moves at NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center Personal Property Office
By Domenico Messina Personal Property Shipping Office (PPSO) Sigonella
With the peak season almost over, NAVSUP FLC Sigonella, Personal Property Shipping Office (PPSO) is still as busy as ever. The PPSO is a small, dedicated team, and used to supporting large scale moves. Last October saw the relocation of the entire EODMU8 to Rota, Spain. Over a span of just a few months, over 300 people, nearly 339 Air Force pallets summing over 366 tons was moved utilizing Direct Procurement Method (DPM). This shipment method uses our local Air Freight MAC ‘Space A’ direct flights
to Rota, and their transition worked in saving money and expedited shipping transit times (most members’ shipments were waiting for them at Rota). This year we have also seen over 1,050 customers, processed more than 2,100 applications (DD 1299’s); and processed, shipped, and received more than 2,000 inbound and outbound shipments, totaling a weight of over four and a half million pounds worth of military family possessions. That is a lot of cargo moving through the Mediterranean! Our Quality Control Inspector has covered more than 626 field inspections, helping to maintain our PPSO, continued on page 13
e measure of an effective leader: encouraging others to lead
John Maxwell defines leadership as influence. Some may argue that this is an oversimplification of this term; however, I wholeheartedly, believe this is a useful definition. So if leadership can be defined as influence; ef-
fective leadership can be defined as influencing others to lead. Maxwell describes this concept, “The one who influences others to follow only is a leader with certain limitations. The one who influences others to lead others is a leader without limitations.” As Andrew Carnegie once quipped, “no man will make a great leader who wants to do it all himself or to get all the credit for doing it.” This marks the difference between a leader (someone with influence) and an effective leader (someone who influences others to lead). When I joined the Chaplain Corps, I already knew how to be a mi-
nister in a civilian context. However, I was new to the military. My first duty station was with the First Marine Division, located in Camp Pendleton, CA. I learned, while in Chaplain School, that my unit would be the 3d Battalion, 1st Marines (3/1). My battalion would be deploying to Iraq in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, in the near future. When I met my new CO, LtCol Willy Buhl (now Col Buhl), I was impressed immediately by his leadership style. He looked into my eyes and said, “Ron, we are going to the al LEADERSHIP, continued on page 12

Last weekend to enjoy 2011 World Fencing Championships Catania - As many as 116 national teams will be taking part in the 2011 World Fencing Championships in Catania to be held at Palaghiaccio di Catania from 8th to 16th October. An outstanding figure, also compared to the record figure in Paris (i.e. 96 national teams were present) during the 2010 World Championships Edition. "This is of course a great result for
us - commented the President of the Organizing Committee, Sebastiano Manzoni - and makes us very happy and proud but, at the same time, it gives us more responsibilities. Catania is really going to be the capital of world fencing and will be hosting 25,000 persons, including athletes and the public." This World Championships' Men's Epée discipline has received a record
number of inscriptions for the individual contests: 228 athletes divided in 31 pools - an unprecedented figure (in 2010, 190 athletes competed in 25 pools). The first Italian athletes are expected to reach Sicily on 2nd and 4th October, whereas the "training camp" organized by the F.I.E. (Fédération Internationale d'Escrime) will be taking place from 1st to 16th October in Enna and will be reserved to the best athletes selected by the various emerging federations. "The World Championships represent an excellent opportunity for Sicily, Sicilian sports and above all for Sicilian fencing, in the diffusion of the discipline throughout the region, a region that has the possibility to take advantage of the "home made" opportunity of the Pre-Olympic World Championships, both with the aim of earning the qualification for the London Olympics for as many athletes as possible, as well as to be able to confirm the role of leadership on an international level not only on the winners platform, but also in the organization of such events. The World Championships may also represent the opportunity for greater awareness, on behalf of Italian sports, as to what fencing represents for Italy, not only in terms of "medals" but also concerning the promotion, pride and glory of the nation," said Giorgio Scarso, the President of the Italian Fencing Federation.
