aval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella kicked off its annual Fourth of July celebration, Red, White, and BOOM, June 29 at Midtown on NAS I. Service members and their families, along with local Italian nationals from the Sigonella community, came out to enjoy a weekend of live music, food, games, and carnival rides to help celebrate the 236th birthday of the United States. The gym at the Fit District set up a fun zone for the kids, which included a bounce house, inflatable slides and face painting. The sounds of live entertainment permeated the atmosphere, bringing those in attendance out of their seats all weekend long. In addition to local favorite

Keep the Wound, Navy Entertainment, in conjunction with Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) Sigonella, brought to Sigonella the American pop punk band Cartel from Conyers, GA and the Blues band Kelly Bell Band from Baltimore, MD. The bands took the stage on the second night of the event, June 30. “The 4th of July celebration is a celebration of our country, of our independence, and it means so much to be able to come here overseas and pay homage to the guys and girls who work so hard so that I can make a living doing what I do,” said Kelly Bell “My father was a member of the United States Navy during Korea, so

it has always been an aspiration of mine to be in the service. I ended up at college and didn’t make it into the service, so this is how I can do what I was supposed to do to support our troops.” Cartel followed the Kelly Bell Band, bringing their own brand of entertainment to the stage. “It’s a privilege to be here and play. I have a large amount of friends in the military so being able to come and give back, give them a great entertaining day, and let everyone have a good time is something that we take pride in, and is very special to us and our families,” said Will Pugh, Cartel Lead singer and bass player. “Our first Navy Entertainment show was for the mili-

tary in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. We really enjoyed doing that. It’s not a place where a lot of Americans get to go so it was cool to be able to go and play for them. So when they asked us to come play around Europe, it was an instant YES!” The celebration came to a close on July 4th with more music, fun, food and games, culminating with a spectacular fireworks display over Midtown. The fun continued into the evening as Sigonellans enjoyed the carnival atmosphhere at Midtown during the July 4th celebration. (U.S. Navy photo by MCSN Cameron Bramham/Released)

OF THE WEEK

“I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” - Michael Jordon

T

his week we celebrated the 236th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence. Anticipated by military members and their family members each year, the Fourth of July has typically been celebrated on bases around the world with barbecues, fairs, and firework displays, and this year was no exception. NAS Sigonella MWR hosted a great celebration for our troops and their families. Rides, games, live bands, and excellent food were all served up in honor of the United States being the greatest nation on earth. As I walked through the various food booths I realized the reason why the US is so great; its because of our diversity and our desire for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, which is not a coined phrase, but a day-to-day philosophy celebrating free-expression, freedom of religion, freedom of speech and the right to be and remain free. I hope each of you took time to reflect on

what this means to you while you enjoyed the time you were able to spend with your families. Speaking of liberty, the summer season is upon us. Traditionally this time period has a high turnover rate for the military since many members transfer during this time to accommodate children in school. That means that many of the volunteer positions in our local volunteer organizations may now be short-handed. Please, if you have the time, contact your local American Red Cross, Navy Marine Corps Relief Society or any volunteer organization of your choice and volunteer your time. Your support means that they can better provide the services they offer to the community. Additionally, this time spent volunteering is a great way to get to know your community and is a huge part of why we in Sigonella have such a successful support system for our service members and families. In closing, I’d like to again congratulate those sailors who have been

promoted in the past couple months and remind everyone that advancements are quickly approaching again. For those who didn’t promote, use this time to continue your studies and prepare for the upcoming exam. We have a lot of incredible individuals here and I hope to see many of you, through your dedication and hard work, achieve the next pay grade.

Interpersonal Skills: Assertiveness – Introduction BY PATRICIA MARTINEZ Fleet and Family Support Center

Assertiveness is a skill often referred to in social and communication skills training. Often wrongly confused with aggression, assertive individuals aim to be neither passive nor aggressive in their interactions with other people. Although everyone acts in passive and aggressive ways from time to time, such ways of responding often result from a lack of self confidence and, therefore, are inappropriate expressions of what such people really need to say. Let’s look at three types of communication behavior people often use. Passive Responding in a passive or non-assertive way tends to mean compliance with the wishes of others and undermines individual rights and selfconfidence. Many people adopt a passive response because they have a strong need to be liked by others. Such people do not regard themselves as equals because they place greater weight on the rights, wishes and feelings of others. Being passive results in failure to communicate thoughts or feelings and results in people doing things they really do not want to do in the hope that they might please others. This also means that they allow others to take responsibility, to lead and make decisions for them. A classic passive response is offered by those who say 'yes' to requests when they actually want to say 'no'. For example, “Do you think you can find the time to clean out these cupboards today?” A typical passive reply might be “Yes, I'll do it after I've done the shopping for Mrs. Smith, made an important telephone call, finished the filing, cleaned the windows and made lunch for grandma!” Aggressive

By responding in an aggressive way, the rights and self-esteem of the other person are undermined. Aggressive responses can include a wide range of behaviors, like rushing someone unnecessarily, telling rather than asking, ignoring someone, or not considering another's feelings. Aggressive behavior fails to consider other individuals' views or feelings. Rarely will praise or appreciation of others be shown and an aggressive response tends to put others down. Aggressive responses encourage the other person to respond in a non-assertive way, either aggressively or passively. Assertive Being assertive involves taking into consideration both your own rights, wishes, wants, needs and desires, as well as those of the other person. Assertiveness means encouraging others to be open and honest about their views, wishes and feelings, in order that both parties act appropriately. Assertive behavior includes: - Being open in expressing wishes, thoughts and feelings and encouraging others to do likewise. - Listening to the views of others and responding appropriately, whether in agreement with these views or not. - Accepting responsibilities and being able to delegate to others. - Regularly expressing appreciation of others for what they have done or are doing. - Being able to admit to mistakes and apologies. - Maintaining self-control. - Behaving as an equal to others. Cathedral of Palermo. The devotion that Palermitani (Palermo’s townspeople) have for Santa Rosalia (Saint Rosalia) dates back to 1624. Rosalia is believed to have averted a terrible epidemic of plague that broke out in Palermo. According to tradition, despite the Palermitani repeatedly invoking the four city co-patron saints (Cristina, Ninfa, Oliva and Agata) against the terrible disease, the plague still spread at a horrifying rate. But a miracle occurred when a soap manufacturer named Vincenzo Banelli, whose wife died because of the epidemic, urged the Palermo Cardinal to hold a procession featuring the relics of Saint Rosalia throughout the city. Tradition holds that Santa Rosalia appeared in a vision to Banelli instructing him that if her earthly remains would be taken in procession through the city, plague would cease. Thus, on July 14, 1624, a magnificent procession featuring the saint’s relics, which were placed in a silver case of crimson velvet, and accompanied by the Royal Council, the Senate, illustrious citizens and all the clergy, took place in Palermo. At the end of it, the plague was over. Every year since 1624 the Palermo community has been celebrating its patron saint with true devotion.

The annual Palermo festival of Santa Rosalia is one of the main religious celebrations in western Sicily. Palermo honors Saint Rosalia “Santa Rosalia, pensateci Voi!” (Saint Rosalia, please take care of it!). This is how Palermo devotees, who are puzzled over a small or big problem, invoke Santa Rosalia to ask for help. She is indeed venerated, just as all Catholic saints, as a special intercessor before God. The devotion displayed by the community of the Sicilian capital to the saint is renewed every year through a spectacular religious festival running from July 13 - 15. As it happens every year, the 388th edition of the “Festino di Santa Rosalia” (Little Saint Rosalia Festival) is expected to bring thousands of tourists and believers to the streets of Palermo. The Saint Rosalia Festival features the July 14 artistic float parade with music and dance shows as well as a solemn relics procession which takes place on July 15. This unique festival was first held in 1625. The festival will begin on the evening of July 13 with a concert featuring local bands. The July 14 evening parade is one of the highlights of this spectacular festival blending religion and Sicilian folklore. It revolves around the “Carro Trionfale,” a majestic float on top of which a statue depicting the saint is placed. First introduced in 1686 as a decorated Baroque float, the carro is built new every year by a different artist. Over the past few years, the float has been shaped as a boat to symbolize the harsh journey undertaken by immigrants arriving by sea on the Sicilian coasts. This year's July 14 float parade will feature Sicilian poetry reading (Cunto), and a “flash mob” show of Sicilian folk dance beginning in the evening around 8 p.m. in the city’s historic

heart. During the parade, the city mayor will shout three times “Viva Palermo e Santa Rosalia!” (long live Saint Rosalia). Around 9 p.m., the parade of the Carro Trionfale leaves from the Cathedral and moves along corso (avenue) Vittorio Emanuele, the Royal Palace, the cathedral and piazza Vigliena, also known as “Quattro Canti,” a breathtaking octagonal square illuminated by the sun’s rays from dusk until dawn in which the four oldest districts of the city intersect at one point. Later, “U’ jocu di focu,” an impressive firework show, is performed at midnight. On July 15, the relics of the saint, which are kept inside the cathedral, will be taken out in procession around the streets as part of a solemn religious procession, led by the city’s archbishop beginning at 6:30 p.m. For more detailed information on the festival, visit the City of Palermo Official web site at http://www.comune.palermo.it/

Life of Saint Rosalia Saint Rosalia, who is nicknamed Santuzza or little Saint, was the daughter of a noble family of northeastern Sicily and a descendant of Charlemagne. She lived in the second half of the twelfth century. According to tradition, she left home when she was still a young woman to live as a hermit in a cave of Mount Quisquinia near Bivona and later in another of Monte Pellegrino near Palermo, where a small Byzantine church was erected. She lived there all her life and she was buried in an adjoining cave. In 1624, her remains were discovered and moved to the

Italian policeman pays for shoplifter's goods out of own pocket (The Guardian) - The financial crisis in Europe may have brought out the worst in certain bankers, but it seems to be bringing out the best in Italy's police. Last Tuesday, and for the second time in less than a month, officers called to deal with a shoplifter were reported to have taken pity on the alleged thief and paid for the goods out of their own pockets. The latest case arose when staff at a supermarket on the outskirts of Siena, in Tuscany, alerted police to a suspected robbery. The officers found a 27-year-old Egyptian and his 19-year-old brother who had apparently failed to pay for goods they had removed from the shop. The police established that the older of the two was unemployed and had a wife and two children. Along with some pasta, he and his brother were found to have taken only milk, nappies and baby food. At this point, according to Corriere Fiorentino, the officers opened their wallets and paid the bill. A similar gesture prompted a round of applause from

shoppers at a supermarket in Milan after a 76-year-old pensioner, identified only as Angela, was found to have passed through the checkout without paying for a box of Tic Tac sweets worth 60p. Sergeant Arturo Scungio said he and his patrol partner had caught up with the suspect near the shop. "She was trembling like a leaf and was clearly frightened by the uniform. From the way she was dressed, I realized she was not well off, that she was one of those who have difficulty making it to the end of the month. I told her what the law was and then I asked her how much pension she received." The old lady said that she was on €320 (£255) a month, adding: "I've always paid my taxes." Scungio said that by the time they returned to the supermarket checkout, she was in tears. The manager told them he did not intend to press charges. "I opened my wallet and paid the 78 cents owed for the Tic Tacs," Scungio said.

Wreck of famed WWII battleship found off Sardinia, Roma sunk by Germans in 1943 (ANSA) - Rome - The wreck of the famous Italian WWII battleship Roma was found last Thursday off Sardinia after decades of hunting, the Italian navy said. A part of the dreadnought was located at a depth of around 1,000 meters about 16 miles off the coast of Sardinia, in the Gulf of Asinara. The Roma was sunk by two innovative German 'glide' bombs on September 9, 1943 as it was sailing to Malta after Italy's armistice with the Allies, killing 1,352 people. It had been launched in June 1942 and was described as a "jewel" of Italy's Royal navy.

tuscan village goes up for sale on eBay (The Guardian) - Proving that property deals in Tuscany are not just the preserve of rock stars and aristocrats, an entire Tuscan village has gone up for sale on eBay. Nestled among the oaks at an altitude of 850 meters and blessed with stunning views over the Casentino Valley, the medieval village of Pratariccia has stood empty for 50 years, ever since its population of farmers and shepherds abandoned their stone cottages for factory jobs during Italy's economic boom. Now the owners of the remote village – reportedly a religious order – are seeking to cash in with an online sale. "They tried and failed to sell the village through agencies for years but have got a lot of attention by putting Pratariccia on eBay and should get results," said Luca Santini, mayor of nearby Stia, who walked in the woods around the village as a child picking mushrooms. The price tag of €2.5m may put off most holiday home buyers, but the deal does include 25 cottages and eight hectares of land where deer, wild boar and even wolves roam. Local estate agent Carlo Magni, who is handling the sale through eBay's classified section, admitted another €1m would

DAOK

be needed to do up the crumbling cottages, provide electricity and add a road. "Right now you can get to within 800 meters in a jeep, and then you're walking," he said. Talks with a group of artists, who were hoping to turn the village into a retreat, had come to nothing, he said, adding: "They were put off by the costs." But, "It's a stupendous location, 40km from Florence, with hermits still living in the nearby hermitage of Camaldoli and all the castles you'll ever need, dating from when Siena and Arezzo fought over the area." Pratariccia is one of hundreds of abandoned or semi-abandoned hilltop villages in stunning locations in Italy that are now being eyed by developers as potential hotels – where guests get their own cottage – or health spas, or bolt holes for Italian émigrés to return to for retirement, like San Basile in Calabria, which has been selling empty cottages cheaply. "Italy is deep in an economic crisis and needs to sell," said Magni. "Finding buyers through the trade press costs money, whereas eBay is free and reaches a huge audience. It's good for selling small things, but I think we will see a lot more Italian villages and even castles coming up for sale."

Chances are your makeup sweated off this morning and your clothes were sticking to your back by 10 a.m. Your air conditioner has been working overtime and you still can’t even keep the thin sheet over you while you’re sleeping, and you’re avoiding the outdoors while the sun is out at all costs. No one needs to tell you how hot Sicily is in July. The best way to beat the heat is a day at the beach! MWR wants to get everyone to the beach this month! There are beach trips scheduled for families, singles, teens and tweens. ITT will be heading to the beach in Noto, Giardini Naxos, the Aeolian Islands, Fontane Bianche and Palermo. The trips provide a relaxing day of touring and beach bumming and the whole family is welcome! The Youth Complex is taking teens and tweens to Cefalú and Fontane Bianche, and they’re even spending the night camping in San Vito Lo Capo! Single service members have the opportunity to soak up the sun every weekend with Liberty. They rotate taking trips on Saturdays or Sundays all summer long! On the Roman calendar, July was the fifth month and it was called 'Quintilis', meaning 'fifth'. Julius Ceasar gave July 31 days in 46 B.C. The Roman Senate named it 'Julius', in honor of Caesar. July is one of the winter months in the Southern Hemisphere. Several other countries celebrate national independence in July.

chaplain’s corner The God of the 11th hour BY LCDR C. SCOTT CAUBLE NAS Sigonella Command Chaplain

The NASSIG Religious Ministry Department provides counseling and training through individual counseling sessions and enrichment seminars. They also offer many opportunities for worship. Please contact the chapel at 624-3975 for details.

It seems that most of my stress comes about as a result of worrying about something in the future. Normally, these aren’t life or death issues either. It’s usually something like the economy – will it rebound? Or the election – will my candidate win? Or my writing assignments – will I get them completed by the deadline? Or the Cubs – will they finally win the Series? In other words, will God bring the deliverance that I expect of Him in the time allotted? The Biblical writers often asked the same question, “Will God deliver us?” Time and again they were given a lesson about trusting God in the 11th hour – the last possible moment for Him to act. Let’s look at a few examples. First, God makes a promise to Abraham in Genesis 12 that He is going to bless the entire world through His descendants. This is an amazing promise except for the one small problem that Abraham and his wife, Sarah, have no children and are well past the age of having any. After many failed attempts at producing his own offspring, Abraham and Sarah are miraculously given their very own son … 25 years later. Or take Gideon from Judges 6. God first tells him to deliver Israel from their enemy, the Midianites. He then tells him to send home 31,700 of his 32,000 fighting men, leaving only 300 troops to defeat the mighty enemy. God then brings deliverance to Israel through this incredibly small number of troops. Or, from

the New Testament, take the story of Lazarus from John 11. Jesus receives a message from Lazarus’ sisters that he is ill and near the point of death. But instead of rushing off to Bethany to immediately heal him, Jesus decides to wait another two days. During the two day delay, Lazarus dies. As a result, Jesus raises him from the dead, a precursor to his own victory over the grave, God’s greatest feat of deliverance. Why does God do this? Why does He wait well beyond the 11th hour to bring deliverance? I believe He does this for a few different reasons. First, He develops faith in us during the waiting time. There was much Abraham had to learn from God during the 25 years he waited for his son to be born. Second, we have to be shown that He is the only option left. Like Gideon, if we thought the battle was to be waged in our own strength, then we wouldn’t trust God for deliverance. Third, if we thought we contributed to the victory, we wouldn’t give God any credit. God often keeps us in suspense so that we get the blessing of knowing God better and He gets all the glory for the victory. Realizing this is God’s typical way of building our trust, trust Him today with your worries. Pray and ask Him to show you another of His 11th hour rescues.
