ASHINGTON (NNS) -- Eight Department of the Navy (DoN) commands were recognized for exemplary achievements at the annual Secretary of the Navy Energy and Water Management Awards ceremony Oct. 3, held at the U.S. Navy Memorial and Naval Heritage Center. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus recognized select commands for leading the DoN in reducing energy and water consumption, increasing use of renewable energy sources and constructing sustainable facilities, all while maintaining mission readiness. "These awards demonstrate the progress that we have made in the last three and a half years to change the way we think about and the way we produce and use energy," said Mabus. "We are working towards these energy goals to help us become a more effective military force to help us accomplish the mission that the nation gives us." The DoN is cultivating a culture of energy efficiency on shore and at sea resulting in enhanced energy readiness and innovation. DoN is a widely recognized leader in renewable energy production. Equivalent of 19 percent of DoN shore electricity consumption comes from alternative sources.

Eight Navy and Marine Corps commands were recognized for exemplary energy and water savings which resulted in combined energy savings in 2011 of more than 418,500 million British thermal units (Btu), enough energy for more than 4,144 homes for an entire year. The commands brought new renewable energy systems on line that produce 48,700 million Btu per year, equal to the energy requirements of 482 homes per year. Water savings were more than 37.5 million gallons, equivalent to 57 Olympic-size swimming pools. Cost avoidance in 2011 topped more than $16.7 million. This year's Navy and Marine Corps energy and water management award winners are: * Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii: Navy Large Shore Category * Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy: Navy Small Shore Category * Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif.: Marine Corps Large Shore Category * Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, Ga.: Marine Corps Small Shore Category * Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Keyport, Wash.: Other Shore Category * USS Makin Island (LHD 8): Large Ship Category * USS Philippine Sea (CG 58): Me-

dium Ship Category * USS Klakring (FFG 42): Small Ship Category Navy commands undergo a rigorous evaluation of their overall energy and water management performance and are ranked according to a system of SECNAV award winners, then platinum, gold or blue level of achievement. Ten platinum, 51 gold and 36 blue commands were also recognized during the ceremony. Mabus emphasized DoN's aggressive energy and water consumption goals laid out three years ago. These five goals strengthen the strategic, tactical and operational capabilities of the Navy and Marine Corps while enhancing environmental stewardship: The DoN's five energy goals are: * Increase Alternative Energy Use DoNWide: By 2020, 50 percent of total DoN energy consumption will come from alternative sources; * Sail the "Great Green Fleet": DoN demon-

strated a Green Strike Group in local operations in 2012 and will sail it by 2016; * Reduce Non-Tactical Petroleum Use: By 2015; DoN will reduce petroleum use in the commercial vehicle fleet by 50 percent; * Energy Ashore: By 2020, DoN will produce at least 50 percent of shore-based energy requirements from alternative sources; 50 percent of DoN installations will be net-zero; and * Energy Efficient Acquisition: Evaluation of energy factors will be mandatory when awarding contracts for systems and buildings. "We have energy goals that we want to achieve and because of the courage, bold actions and innovations of our winners today, we will achieve these goals," said Mabus. "We are on the path to create a new energy future that will increase the security of this country because that is what the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps have always done."

NAS Sigonella Commanding Officer, Capt. Scott Butler I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Columbus Day weekend. Not only was it a holiday weekend, but also a huge weekend for Sigonella youth sports. Just as importantly, I want to thank the community for coming out to support our student athletes. It may have been the extra support that put volleyball, football, and cross country squads over the top: all of them came away with victories. The Sigonella Swordfish also hosted the “Double Dip” swim meet, with many of our swimmers turning in personal records for the events. It is always fun to show off our state-of-the-art facilities to other families across Europe. If you did not make it out to any of the games, there will be more opportunities. I encourage everyone to come out and support your teams! Congratulations and well done to all those who competed! Our United States Navy dates back to the Continental Navy, which the Continental Congress established on 13 October 1775, by authorizing the procurement, fitting out, manning, and dispatch of two armed vessels to cruise in search of munitions ships supplying the British Army in America. In 1972, Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt

authorized recognition of 13 October as the Navy’s birthday. Since 1972, each CNO has encouraged a Navy-wide celebration of this occasion "to enhance a greater appreciation of our Navy heritage, and to provide a positive influence toward pride and professionalism in the naval service." Tomorrow, we will celebrate the 237th birthday of our great Navy with a Ball at the Catania Sheraton. I am pleased and honored to welcome Vice Admiral French, Commander Navy Installations Command as our guest speaker this year. There has never been a better time to have the Navy leader responsible for every Navy installation in the world visit our base and become a part of our Community! The Sigonella Navy Ball seems to just get better each year and is a great chance to honor the rich heritage and deep traditions that help make our Navy the finest in the world. Tomorrow’s celebration will be a capstone event to an entire week of events – and many months of preparation. I’m extremely grateful to the entire Navy Ball Committee for their efforts, and want to thank Lt. Chris Work and Lt. Rudy Mason for leading the charge. I encourage all Sigonellans to join in the Navy Birthday Celebration and reflect on the

many accomplishments we have made together as a Navy. Happy 237th Birthday, Shipmates! Lastly, I want to remind everyone that we are now less than 30 days before the elections and I want to make sure that you have all the resources available to ensure have the opportunity to vote. Rome (MMI) October 6 at NAS I annex field. This was the only home event of the season. The grueling five kilometer course consisted of four laps around the annex field complex and one lap around the U.S. Naval Hospital Sigonella, including the infamous “Hospital Hill.” The Sigonella runners did not disappoint the home crowd. The Jaguars took first place for both the boys and girls teams. First place for the boys was awarded to Abel Ararso with a time of 19:28. First place for the girls went to Samantha McManus with a time of 26:58. The cross country team will compete October 20 in Vicenza.

Homecoming weekend for Sigonella Middle/High School was capped off with the Jaguars best showcase on the gridiron this season, scoring 48 straight points, beating visiting Brussels Brigands, 48-6 and qualifying for the playoffs. “We've had a must win mentality since the third game of the season,” Head Coach Matt McKown said. As of now, it is uncertain who the Jags will play in the postseason, but one thing McKown says is clear. “Believe me we are not just happy to make the playoffs, we want to do some damage when we get there.” The Jaguars have one more game October 13 against Woodham before playoffs begin October 20.

The Sigonella Swordfish competed against teams from Aviano, Naples and Vicenza, Italy and Stuttgart, Germany October 6-7. In attendance at the event were the Aviano Sea Dragons, Naples Tiger Sharks, Vicenza Mako Sharks, and the Stuttgart Piranhas. There was also one swimmer representing the NATO Marlins from NATO headquarters in Belgium. The next meet for the Swordfish will be November 3-4 at Aviano and Vicenza.

The Sigonella Lady Jaguars volleyball team hosted Marymount International School of Rome (MMI), October 5 and 6 at “The Jag” gymnasium. The games were a part of homecoming weekend for Sigonella Middle/High School. Both games were won by Sigonella 3-0 with Friday’s games resulting in 25-13 points for all three sets. Saturday’s match was more competitive early on as MMI closed the gap in the first set before falling 25-18 to the Lady Jags and then losing 25-9 and 25-17 in the final two sets.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month! There is NO EXCUSE for DOMESTIC ABUSE! The National Domestic Violence Awareness Month is an opportunity to raise awareness of domestic violence, educate about the signs of abuse and emphasize the negative impact it has on family readiness. In support of the national observance, the Fleet and Family Support Center will focus on awareness and prevention through the Domestic Abuse Prevention/Awareness campaign. The focus of this campaign is to: educate bystanders and prompt them to action in preventing domestic abuse, inform victims of domestic abuse that help is available and that offenders will be held accountable. Symbolism of the Purple Ribbon What began close to two decades ago in scattered communities as a visible gesture of support for survivors and victims of domestic violence, today has become one of the most widely-recognized symbols of the battered women's movement-the purple ribbon. The exact history of the purple ribbon is somewhat difficult to pinpoint. Over the years, a number of sources have been credited with originating the use of the purple ribbon as a unifying symbol of courage, survival, honor and dedication to ending domestic violence. Across the country, families and friends of victims have adopted the purple ribbon to remember and honor their loved ones who have lost their lives at the hands of a person they once loved and trusted. Shelters and local battered women's programs use the pur-

ple ribbon to raise awareness about the crime of domestic violence in their communities. The purple ribbon also has been recognized by State Legislatures in proclamations commemorating October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. How Is Your Relationship? DOES YOUR PARTNER…. ■ Verbally insult, demean or threaten you? ■ Isolate you from friends, family or other people? ■ Organize schedules to follow or harass you? ■ Limit your mobility or access to money? ■ Explode into rage and assault you physically or sexually? ■ Negate your words, abilities, ideas and actions? ■ Choke, punch, slap, kick or otherwise hurt you? ■ Excuse each attack and promise to stop? If this sounds familiar, you could be the victim of an abusive relationship. However, you are not alone. Whether you need information, support, or a safe place to stay, there are people who can help. Domestic abuse has negative effects on family readiness and undermines quality of life. The choices are many. We all must acknowledge that interpersonal violence is wrong, reach out to support victims, hold offenders accountable and create a climate of safety and respect. Police recently arrested the 16-year-old son of a Naples mafia clan boss after he allegedly pulled out a pistol and opened fire on a classmate and love rival, wounding him in the leg. Police said the Naples mafia scion suspected the other youth of having a relationship with the object of his own affection: a 13year-old girl whose cousin was killed in a Naples mafia shootout in 2004. The victim was admited to a local hospital in the Naples district of Forcella where doctors said he would take 30 days to recover. After he was shot, the youth crashed the Honda scooter he was riding at the time, injuring his passenger as well, Naples daily Il Mattino reported.

Tourists snacking in Rome could be fined hundreds of dollars, Tourist and other visitors can now face fines for snacking at the city's historic sites. (Reuters)

Rome - Basta with the pasta, and all other snacks on the street. That's what officials in Rome are saying to visitors to the ancient city about eating at main tourists sites. A new ordinance imposes fines of up to $645 for hungry tourists caught grabbing a bite to eat in the street while visiting Rome’s historic monuments, such as the Colosseum, Italian media reported. La Repubblica newspaper says that the law, which came into effect Tuesday, is intended to "guarantee the protection of areas of merit in the historic centre."

“It is forbidden to encamp or erect makeshift shelters and stop to eat or drink in zones which have a particular historic or architectural value,” reads the ordinance adopted by Rome city council. "This is a way to re-educate people about how to behave in this city. We've let standards fall," Viviana Di Capua, member of an association of historic district residents, told the paper. AFP reports that similar bans have already been adopted in several other Italian cities, such as Florence and Venice. Visitors staying overnight Florence must pay a tax to improve the tourists services and public transportation, while tourists to Venice must pay a hotel tax to save the city from sinking.

Italian president condemns German ruling on Nazi massacre, 'Disturbing' reasons for throwing out Tuscan slaughter case (ANSA) -

Rome - Italian President Giorgio Napolitano last Friday spoke out against a German court's decision not to prosecute surviving Nazi military officers suspected of a World War II massacre in Tuscany. "We note with profound regret the disturbing reasons for closing a case into those suspected of directly participating in those heinous Nazi crimes," said Napolitano in an anniversary message marking a separate case, in which 43 civilians were killed in a Nazi massacre in Bellona, southern Italy, in 1943. Following a 10-year investigation, German magistrates on Monday said a lack of evidence made them drop the case against eight surviving Nazi soldiers for the murder of 560 civilians, including 116

children, in the Tuscan village of Sant'Anna di Stazzema, near Lucca, in 1944. The decision sparked anger and disbelief among the local community and Italian politicians, with mayor Michele Silicani describing it as "absurd and unjust". In its own investigation and trial, the Italian military court condemned 10 of the exNazi officers to life in prison in absentia, including the eight who remain alive. Germany refused to grant Italy's request for the men's arrest. Mayor Siliciani on Tuesday said he also planned to meet with Justice Minister Paola Severino to ask for her intervention. Only three former Nazis have ever been jailed in Italy for war crimes. Erich Priebke, 99, was extradited from Argentina in 1995 and sentenced to life for his part in a 1944 reprisal outside Rome that killed 335 men and boys including many Jews; his ex-commander Karl Hass, arrested after coming from Switzerland to Priebke's trial with witness immunity, died in prison aged 92 in 2004; and 'Butcher of Bolzano' Michael Seifert, found guilty of 18 murders, was extradited from Canada to serve life in 2008 and died in jail aged 86 in 2010. Priebke is now under house arrest in Rome. He had a work permit revoked in 2007 after an outcry from the city's Jewish community. Italian prosecutors have issued European arrest warrants for 15 other German former soldiers without success. Under the terms of a postwar settlement, Germany is not required to extradite alleged war criminals to Italy. The two countries agreed in 2008 to review outstanding wartime issues including the compensation for victims.

Ottobràta is in full swing in the town of Zafferana! The festival is held every Sunday in October, so if you haven’t already been, make plans to head up to Etna and join in the fun. This is the 34th year of the event and it’s a must see during your stay in Sigonella. My wife and I recently took the ITT trip to the festival and loved it.

From artisans and craftsmen, fresh food and produce, wine, nuts, and honey, there is just about something for everyone. The many vendors are more than happy to give you a sampling of what they have to offer. There is also plenty to choose from at the abundant food booths available. Try a panini with horse meat, or grab an ear of roasted corn. I personally had the

Panino Mongibello, or a pork sausage sandwich with a pistachio sauce. There are also the ever present pastries and cannolis. If you leave Ottobràta hungry, you’ve done something wrong! Not to be confused with the annual Oktoberfest in Germany, which focuses more on beer, the Ottobràta festival celebrates the many

agricultural products that are grown in the Et region. One of my favorites is honey. There a several different varieties to choose from, inc ding peach, pistachio, almond, hazelnut, o mixture of everything! There are three Sundays left, October 1 21, & 28. So get up, skip breakfast, and he out to Zafferana to join the celebration.

MCPON sends 237th Navy birthday message

Members of a Navy honor guard from the guided-missile destroyer USS Cole (DDG 67) practice rendering colors before a memorial service at the USS Cole Memorial at Naval Station Norfolk. The Norfolk-based ship was damaged by a suicide bombing while refueling in the Port of Aden in Yemen, killing 17 and wounding 39 Sailors. Cole returned to the fleet in 2002 and has deployed four times since the attack. (U.S. Navy photo by MC1 Julie Matyascik/Released)

Remembering USS Cole Sailors lost Seventeen Sailors were killed aboard guided-missile destroyer USS Cole (DDG 67) when it was attacked by terrorists in the Yemeni port of Aden 12 years ago, on October 12, 2000. A Cole Memorial site consisting of 17 low-level markers which stand for the youthfulness of the Sailors whose lives were cut short and three tall, granite monoliths, each bearing brass plaques, stand for the three colors of the American flag. A set of brown markers encircles the memorial symbolize the darkness and despair that overcame the ship. Additionally, 28 black pine trees represent the 17 Sailors and the 11 children they left behind.

Onboard the ship itself, the passageway for the mess line, known as the "Hall of Heroes," stands as a lasting memorial to those lives lost. There are 17 brass stars placed in the deck to represent the 17 sailors killed that morning. On the mess decks, there are various reminders of the long road back to sea for the Cole. Among them are three U.S. flags. The first is the flag that was flying the day the bombing took place. Second is the flag that was used during the burial of the lost sailors. Lastly, the flag that was flown when the Cole got back underway for its first deployment after the bombing.

duct ourselves professionally. This is something that we should all actively strive to do every day. It adds value, influences those around us in a positive way, and is truly important to our primary mission of warfighting. I personally look to our history as a roadmap and a guide to help us stay the course and aid us in navigating through the challenges we face today. It is these challenges that create the opportunities that allow us to grow as Sailors, citizens and leaders. The Navy's birthday gives us a chance to think about the things that we are doing today and how we are creating

history from which future generations can draw courage. In everything that we do, we need to provide future generations something to be proud of and celebrate. This is our time and we are part of a new history. We must seize the day, because if we don't, who will? To all of our Sailors and Navy families, I would like to wish you a very happy birthday as we celebrate 237 years of excellence and service to our great Navy. All the Best! Very Respectfully, MCPON"

TEST YOUR STRENGTH! Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) is hosting the first ever Sigonella Strongman Competition, October 27. If you eat 300 grams of protein per day, have ever been called a "beefcake" or sold tickets to the gun show, this contest is for you! The Sigonella Strongman Competition will consist of eight events including the Caveman Stone Carry, Farmer’s Walk, Tire Toss, Boulder Dash, Keg Toss, Tire Flip, Crucifix and Tackle the Great Snake. According to MWR Sports Coordinator Brandon Donalson the contest will require both strength and endurance. “They’re going to need to eat their Wheaties that day,” Donalson says. "One of the most challenging events will be Tackle the Great Snake where competitors will have to transport a 992 pound, 140 yard long rope 100 feet. The Boulder Dash event involves pushing a giant stone ball through a course full of bridges, sand traps and occa-

sional garden gnomes. Other events include carrying cement-filled pipes through an obstacle course, tossing tires for distance and thro-

wing kegs for height. You better have logged hours as the gym!" There are four categories for this competition: three weight classes for men and a women’s category. Medallions will be awarded for first, second and third place at each event and trophies will be given to the first, second and third place overall in each division. The contest is open to ages 18 and over, active duty military, spouses, DOD, local nationals and other European bases. All competitors must sign up and have a registration packet turned in to the NAS I Gym no later than Thursday, October 25. The Sigonella Strongman Competition will take place Saturday, October 27 at the NAS I Annex Field. Weigh-ins will happen at 8 a.m. and the events start at 9 a.m. Email brandon.donalson@eu.navy.mil or call 335349-115 for more information.
