aval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella Honor Guard along with other service members gathered at the Catania War Cemetery with Catania Faro Biscari Lions Club officials, Italian children from a local elementary school, and local military and civilian authorities to honor those lost in the Nasiriyah, Iraq terrorist attack during a special ceremony, November 10. Volunteers had the opportunity to participate and remember the 19 Carabinieri policemen who died in the terrorist bombing. NAS Sigonella Honor Guard member, Tech. Sgt. Jerred Mitchell said, “To be a part of this memorial is very humbling to me. We’re all in this together and it gives me great respect to be here to do this event.” The attack, which took place in 2003, was Italy’s heaviest military loss since World War II. The attack also left
nine Iraqi civilians dead and more than a hundred people injured. The memorial also remembered those lost in various battles which took place in Sicily during World War II. “This is the seventh edition of the memorial,” Catania Lions Club President Alberto Robelli said. “There are two reasons we’ve been doing this since 2005. The first one is to remember all of the soldiers who have fallen during the wars in particularly World War II. Secondly, we have kids from a Catania elementary school here to teach them about history and why our history in [World War II] is important.” As a local citizen of Sicily, Retired British Army Maj. Allen Batty was tasked with laying the wreath during the ceremony, read a poem about what a soldier is and does, and gave the exhortation or act of remembrance.
QUOTE
Supporters for the memorial and cemetery including Batty believe it’s a great thing to have service members from NAS Sigonella join with them on a day they remember. “What delights me is to see so much interest in the cemetery,” Batty said. “Certainly until we got support from [NAS] Sigonella in 2005, there wasn’t a great deal going on at all.” NAS Sigonella service members who attended the memorial agree with Batty, and said it was very important for the base to be represented at the event because it shows our Italians neighbors that NAS Sigonella offers support. “We’re here today to support our local nationals and our British allies,” Mitchell said. “This memorial is for all three countries. We’re respecting the fallen that fought in [World War II] in Sicily and those killed in the [Nasiriyah] attack.”

NAS Sigonella Executive Officer, Cmdr. Eric Vosler I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Veteran’s Day. I can’t express my thanks enough for what you do. We are able to serve by the sacrifices of those before us and for all those who currently serve. We could not do what we do without the support of our military families. Thank you Sigonella for your service and the sacrifices you and your family make to ensure the safety and freedoms of our country. Special thanks go to the NASSIG Safety Department for coordinating and putting on this year’s Holiday Safety Standdown. I hope that everyone took away some useful information that will help you make our holiday season a safe one. Thanks for the questions received during Feedback Live. We want to make sure that we answer all your questions and concerns, so I’ll answer a few more of them in this Direct Line.
Q
I know the recycling issue has come up in the past, but when walking around base, there are no recycling options around the most popular areas on base (Midtown, NEX, etc.) I know out in town, they have the all-in-one trash cans that give you the option of separating garbage from
plastics, paper and aluminum. Is it possible for the base to have those available in high traffic areas? Your question is an excellent one. Sigonella is currently developing a Qualified Recycling Program that will help to correct this problem. Recycling bins were mistakenly removed from certain high traffic areas last year and NAVFAC is working with the Base Support Contractor to obtain and place new ones in selected areas. Currently, there are large recycle bins in the NEX/Commissary Parking Lot available for drop off. As with any program, we can only be successful if the recycle bins are utilized properly by all. Recycling is mandatory in Italy and the Base is working toward a better program.

Is it possible to put a few exercise machines in the old CD/Tween Center in Marinai for adults to use? MWR is operating two fully manned Fitness Centers here is Sigonella with state of the art equipment and more good things on the way including renovation and more new equipment. The Navy's approach to fitness is to run concentrated, high quality facilities with professional staff, equipment and programs to serve our customers.
Also, the Navy has strict regulations governing unmanned fitness areas and Marinai would not meet those requirements. I just returned from a week of leave and cannot begin to tell you how important it is to utilize the leave you receive each year. Take advantage of the CO’s liberty policy and the Environmental Morale Leave programs as defined in NASSIGINST 4630.5H. Enjoy the holiday but keep it safe and stay classy Sigonella.

Global Hawk opens new home on flight line BY MCSN CAMERON BRAMHAM NAS Sigonella Public Affairs
Service and community members from Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella and United States Air Force (USAF) Global Hawk Detachment gathered at the flight line on NAS II for a ribbon cutting ceremony officially declaring a new hangar bay for the Global Hawk Detachment fully operational, November 8. “I want to extend my thanks to all the amazing folks that put an amazing product together on time and made our transition painless,” USAF Global Hawk Detachment, Commanding Officer, Lt. Col. Paul Wojtowicz said. Air Force members said it has been a very fast process changing facilities; however, they are excited about having a new home on the flight line. “This building represents the commitment of the United States Air Force,” Wojtowicz said. “We’re always looking into the future and always looking to see what capabilities for the Global Hawk program are going to be at some point in time.”
The new hangar bay took three and a half years from blueprint design to construction completion until it was declared operational by the USAF, NAS Sigonella and Italian Air Force 41st Stormo. “With any big construction there were some little things that would hold up the process,” Former Site Manager Andrew Audette said. “However, I think the team worked very well getting the problems resolved. They did a great job and I look forward to the team doing great things from this facility.” Airmen said they are very grateful for NAS Sigonella hosting them in hangar bays 630 and 633, but are also ready to begin operations with a new roof over their heads. “We have an amazing building now,” Wojtowicz said. “However, it doesn’t matter if we were in a 30 million dollar hangar or a tent; we are going to accomplish our mission 365 days, 24/7. That’s what the nation expects of us.”

Get from the bottom to the top: How to effectively utilize the “elevator speech” to improve your networking abilities You may have heard of the elevator speech, that targeted 30 secondtwo minute dialogue that allows you to market yourself and all you have to offer to a potential employer and/or networking contact. How to effectively utilize this speech is very useful information for job-seekers who wish to engage others, expand their network and constructively communicate with potential job-search enhancing contacts. There are many theories as to where the term “elevator speech” originates, ranging from the idea that we often run into important people in elevators to the explanation that the elevator speech is a clear, concise bit of communication that can be delivered in as short amount of time as it takes for a person to ride from the bottom to the top of a building in an elevator. Regardless of where the term came from, the elevator speech is an exceptionally useful and versatile tool in a variety of situations: • Job/Career Fairs and events designed specifically for networking. • Informal networking opportunities we encounter almost daily, including kids' football games, talking to people while flying on a plane, waiting in line to pay for groceries or buy tickets for the movies, and so on.
• Cold calls to employers when doing informational interviewing for a job search • Opportunities within your current job to talk with superiors in order to inform them of the quality of work you’re performing and discuss possible promotion. • Job interviews, where the elevator speech can help provide the answer to at least two common interview questions: "Tell me about yourself " and "Why should I hire you?" In order to get comfortable with the elevator speech, it’s helpful to practice it frequently, whether with a friend or even in front of a mirror. The elevator speech can help you initiate dialogue in a multitude of situations where effective networking is key to your job search success. The key is to make your introduction so interesting and engaging that people will want to spend more time talking with you and learning about you. The following example can get you started practicing a productive elevator speech and prepare you for your next opportunity to network: Hi, my name is ___________. I'm in the _______________ field, and I'm looking to__(find employment as a… or Expand my professional network or learn more about
the _____profession, etc.)_____. I have _________ years of experience as a_______. My education and training have prepared me for __________. In my work, I have_(give examples of what you are experienced doing/specific examples of your accomplishments)___. I firmly believe my skills and experience could benefit you (or your company) in the following ways __________. I am eager to ___________ and appreciate the opportunity to learn more about ____________. Don’t fall into the trap of composing an elevator speech that inspires the thought "so what?" in the listener. You can avoid this pitfall by adding an element of intrigue, essentially hooking your listener by effectively incorporating your Unique Selling Point(s). By doing so, you will more likely be successful in captivating your target audience. What makes you unique? What can you say to make your speech truly matter? Putting thought into your elevator speech can make a significant difference in whether it is impressive and effectual or a complete dud. For more information on how to effectively tackle your elevator speech, contact Sarah Conlan at the Fleet and Family Support Center, 6244291 or sarah.conlan@eu.navy.mil.

Cassatella Festival in Agira, November 16 - 18 Attend the "Sagra della Cassatella" (Cassatella Festival) in Agira, a picturesque town nestled on top of a hill in the Enna province. This annual family-oriented event celebrates the town's specialty, a mouthwatering half-moon shaped pastry filled with almonds, chickpea flour, sugar, lemon rind and sometimes cinnamon. The festival kicks off Friday, November 16 at 5 p.m. and runs through Sunday, November 18 at the Centro Fieristico (fair center) located in via circonvallazione (southern part of the town). On November 17 and 18, festival grounds will open at 10 a.m. As reported by www.cassatella.com, the Agira’s cassatella is a cake with a very ancient origin, an essential element of the traditional Agira’s cuisine. It is difficult to document the history of casatella because there are no written sources about it. In its earliest version it was known as “pasticciotto,” and had a circular shape with a button placed at the top center of the disc, as if to recall another Sicilian sweet, the “minni ‘e vergine”, which is dedicated to Saint Agatha. Beside the picturesque townscape, the numerous baroque churches and palaces number among the sights worth seeing in Agira. The Church of San Salvatore at the Piazza Roma and the Arab-Norman castle are especially worth a visit. Festivalgoers visiting Agira should also plan a stop at the neighboring "Sicily's Fashion Village," which is regarded as "the largest Italian and foreign top fashion brands' factory outlet in the south of Italy." Getting to Agira is fairly easy. Exit Agira on A-19 and then drive for about 10 miles. For more information and detailed festival schedule visit http://www.comune.agira.en.it/.

Italy looks like one country on the map, but is actually an amalgam of 20 very different regions. So, the phrase “northern Italian restaurant” is an incomplete description, as there are eight regions up there, and four are important to the world of wine. You may have heard northern Italian used to describe a restaurant that doesn’t serve tomato sauce on every dish. This is the central issue regarding the northern regions — the ingredients and grapes are different from what a lot of Americans expect in “Italian” cuisine. Rather than tomatoes, garlic and olive oil, true northern Italians use butter, cream, onions, potatoes and softer herbs such as basil. It is largely a white-wine zone, although there are some important red wines from there. Piedmont (Piemonte) produces some of the most important reds in the wine world. Barolo and Barbaresco are towns that lend their names to two noble reds made from the nebbiolo grape. As for food recommendations, Piemontese cuisine tends toward richness, with truffles, cream and meaty dishes. The higher acid levels of nebbiolo-based wines work well to cut through the richness. Speaking of high-acid wines, the third “B” of Piedmont is Barbera, which in this case is the name of the grape. You will see Barbera d’Asti or Barbera d’Alba labels from the towns of Asti and Alba. Barberas are lighter than Barolo and Barbaresco, and easier on the wallet. They might not have the weight to pair with rich meat meals, but they are a great complement to many pastas, poultry and lighter veal or pork dishes. The last of the reds from Piedmont is Dolcetto. It is the simplest red from the region, and should be consumed while young and fresh. It’s a great lunch wine. Let’s swing over to Veneto, home to some very different wines. You’ve heard of at least two of them: prosecco and valpolicella. Prosecco is one of the most popular sparkling wines in the United States these days. From the Glera grape, it is made in the Charmat Process where the carbonating fermentation takes place in a tank, rather than the Champagne Method in the bottle. This leads to a simpler wine, which is fine. Prosecco is great with light appetizers and alone as an aperitif, but doesn’t have the weight or complexity to keep up with most main courses. On to Veneto reds. The two best-known are Valpolicella and Amarone, made from three grapes: Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara. You might remember trying to impress a date with the most expensive wine at your local spaghetti parlor when you were young. It was Bolla Valpolicella, around $18. Luckily for you, this is the very definition of “spaghetti red.” Its lightness and bright acidity are perfect for tomato sauce. It also lends itself to light meat dishes and richer fish dishes.

Flavors continued.
Amarone is nothing like what I just described. It’s a huge wine, powerful enough to scare the novice oenophile. Even its full name is foreboding — Amarone Della Valpolicella, which means “big bitter one of Valpolicella.” It is made by taking the trio of grapes after harvest and letting them dry, traditionally on straw mats. As the water in the grapes evaporates, sugars concentrate, and when fermented, result in a richer, thicker, higher alcohol wine. While impressive, few foods can stand up to it: hefty meat dishes (like rib-eye steak) or very rich pastas. As it is almost port-like, Amarone actually does nicely with rich cheeses. So pasta with gorgonzola-walnut sauce might work well. I’m putting the next two regions together because they produce similar styles of wine, mostly whites. Trentino-Alto Adige borders Austria and Friuli-Venezia Giulia borders Austria and Slovenia. They are the source of most Italian Pinot Grigio. While this wine can be a bit thin and insipid, there are some great examples with complex aromatics, while remaining crisp and delicate. In the Alto Adige, Austrian influence can be seen in some excellent Rieslings, and there are some truly great wines made from Ribolla Gialla. The most distinctive wine of Friuli is Friulano. So buy northern Italian wine to serve with real northern Italian food. Just plug the region’s name into a search engine and add the word “cuisine.” Remember that what grows together, goes together.

Chinese company expresses interest in building Messina bridge (ANSA)
Rome - A Chinese company has expressed interest in the project to build a bridge over the Strait of Messina, according to Pietro Ciucci, the chief executive of the company charged with studying the feasibility of the project. On Friday, the government announced that it would not cancel the long-awaited and controversial bridge project, which aims to connect mainland Italy with Sicily, but that it would extend feasibility studies for another two years. Previously, the government had said it would shelve the much-debated project, the brainchild of former Premier Silvio Berlusconi. During a hearing Tuesday in Italy's Senate, Ciucci said regarding the building of the bridge. Ciucci did not elaborate except to say that the memorandum "is not a contract or commitment, but it shows there is interest in part of the market" for the bridge's realization. "There is a communique' drafted after a meeting in Istanbul in which the interest in building the bridge is affirmed," Ciucci added. The 8.5-billion-euro project will not be getting off the drawing board any time soon, however. On Monday Italian Industry Minister Corrado Passera said that 'the project is not yet sustainable, neither technically not financially'. Passera also said that he had not met with private Chinese investors regarding the possibility of funding the stalled project. 'We have to give ourselves another two years to evaluate if there are private investors interested,' Passera said Monday.

Palermo - DNA tests showed a 90% likelihood that the skeleton exhumed from a Sicilian cemetery belongs to legendary bandit Salvatore Giuliano who died in 1950, Il Giornale di Sicilia reported on Tuesday, citing local judicial sources. The DNA match between the skeleton and Giuliano's relations means that Sicilian prosecutors are now close to archiving the probe they opened in 2010 into the possibility that someone was murdered and passed off as Giuliano, according to the sources. The body now almost certainly Giuliano's was entombed 60 years ago in a cemetery in Montelepre, near Palermo but was dug up in October 2010 as part of the investigation. Mysteriously, according to members of his family and witnesses, Giuliano was at least 1.80 metres tall while the exhumed skeleton belongs to someone between 1.60-1.70 metres. Some historians and coroners had claimed that Giuliano managed to escape to the United States, possibly with the help of the mafia, and that someone else was buried in his place, contradicting the official version that he was killed by a paramilitary police captain in the western Sicilian town of Castelvetrano on 5 July 1950. Giuliano gained fame among his fellow Sicilians during World War II when he led a group of bandits in stealing money for food and weapons, and became known as a kind of Robin Hood figure for allegedly aiding the poor with the takings from his banditry. He also belonged to a separatist movement.
Over-educated' Italians winding up in low-qualified jobs, College grads resorting to openings with 'little or no training' (ANSA)
Rome - A high number of Italian graduates tend to wind up in jobs that require no training or have nothing to do with their field of study, the Bank of Italy said Friday. In a report from the Italian central bank, 25% of college grads working between 2009 and 2011 were in a field that required "little or no qualifications". In Germany, the number is 18%. It also found that 32.3% were working in fields that were completely different from their college majors. The data stands out in contrast to remarks last month by Labor Minister Elsa Fornero, who told young Italians looking for work "not to be too 'choosy'," using the English word. In the same three-year period, the employment rate for graduates aged 25 to 34 was 75.1%. Graduates in the industrial north had an 84.7% employment rate, while the rate was 58.6% in the south. Nearly a quarter of those graduates had a job with little or no qualifications. Engineering and architecture students were the most likely to find work in their sector, while those who studied humanities and the social sciences were the least likely.
Tax Evasion Alleged over Valentino Sale, assets worth €65 million seized (Corriere della Sera)
Milan-based financial police officers are executing a precautionary seizure order for real property, land and equity holdings worth €65 million. The funds and assets are controlled by 13 individuals, some with links to the world of fashion and the Marzotto (Pietro, Paolo and Gaetano Marzotto’s branches are not involved) and Donà delle Rose families. The charge is failure to submit tax returns for income, real property, land and equity holdings attributable to them. UNDER INVESTIGATION – Under the investigators’ microscope are Vittorio, Matteo, Maria Rosaria, Cristiana and Margherita Marzotto, Andrea, Isabella and Rosanna Donà dalle Rose, Barth Zech, Pierre Cladmi, Ferdinando Businaro and property entrepreneur Massimo Caputi. ASSETS – Assets seized include a 25-room villa at Cortina d’Ampezzo, homes in Milan and Rome and a castle at Tressino with more than 50 rooms, as well as a 30-room residence and several plots of land in the Vicenza area. The property seized has not been placed under seal because, as financial police sources point out, the purpose of the order is to prevent its sale or dispersal until the current proceedings have run their course. LUXEMBOURG – The inquiry is in the hands of public prosecutors Laura Pedio and Gaetano Ruta, coordinated by assistant public prosecutor Francesco Greco in collaboration with experts from the tax office. The assets seized can be traced back to ICG, a financial holding company formally and deliberately set up in Luxembourg when its actual administrative base is alleged to be in Italy. Investigators are understood to have identified the locations in which decisions were actually taken and orders issued for the management of the Luxembourg-registered company by partners almost all of whom turned out to be resident in Italy.

David Chicken comes to Sigonella INTERVIEW AND PHOTOS BY MCSN CAMERON BRAMHAM NAS Sigonella Public Affairs
Much-admired children’s entertainer and musician David McMahon, better known by his stage name David Chicken performed at Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella as part of a Navy Entertainment tour. The live show was held November 6 at Knight’s Hall for all Sigonella Elementary students. McMahon, A three time Emmy Award winner from Dallas has performed many times for different occasions in the U.S., Canada and now overseas, but what makes this chicken go “cluck-cluck,” in a special way that captures kids attention? The Signature went behind the feathers, and found out how McMahon became an inspiration, teacher and friend to youngsters all over the world. The Signature: What interested you in becoming a kid’s entertainer?
to do that. The songs are full of energy, they’re very interactive and the kids can tell that I love doing it.
David Chicken: I’ve basically been entertaining kids since I was a kid. I remember when I was seven dressing up as the Easter Bunny so the younger kids could come and visit. I’ve always been in all kinds of rock ’n’ roll and hip-hop bands but the problem with those bands is they’re very confining. They always want you to stick with a genre. As you noticed with the show we did all kinds of music. We did hip-hop, rock ’n’ roll, type of old school country stuff. I even have a polka I can do. So that was one of the things that got me wanting to do kids music to begin with is that kids will embrace any kind of music as long as it’s fun and has a positive message which I’m all about. So, I decided to break out from doing traditional band type groups to doing this and it’s just a lot more fun and rewarding. There’s nothing better than seeing the kids all up, getting into it and dancing and singing along especially to songs that have a good messages like “Recycle Bin.”
TS: What is your show all about?
TS:What do you think it is about your show that grabs kid’s attention? DC: I think one thing is they respond to the fact that I’m sincere in my music. I’m not just putting on an act and wearing a funny hat. Which is one of the things I love about doing this the most is that I don’t put on any pretenses and I just get to go up there and do what comes naturally. You know everybody says find what you love and do more of that, and thankfully, I’m able
DC: I would say my show is all about interaction, getting kids involved and positive messages like recycling, brushing your teeth, reading, and exercising. Trying to instill confidence in kids like getting them a chance to get on the stage and be a star. Getting that feeling of being up in the spotlight and having people applaud for you means a lot for kids. Also, I remember being a kid which I think helps. If you remember what it was like being a kid, it helps you connect with kids better. I think some adults forget what it was like to be a kid and I hope I never do. TS: What made you want to perform for military children? DC:Well honestly, this is my first tour getting to perform with military kids and this is my second show doing it. My first was up in [NSA] Naples and I love it. I’ve been doing shows for ten years in the U.S. and Canada, but it’s been very rewarding to see it go over just as well over here. It’s a tremendous honor to be able to perform for military families. TS: Has there been a different reaction from kids at military schools than kids in the States? DC: None what so ever! In fact if anything, I would say the older kids are less inhibited here which is nice;
because sometimes you get the older kids thinking that this is just a little kid thing. I really enjoyed the kids here though, every kid in the gym was up singing and dancing, which made performing much more enjoyable. TS:What do you like about NAS Sigonella? DC: Talking to you now, I still haven’t had a chance to go into Catania or other towns around base and experience anything yet, but I can tell you this is a beautiful base. It’s really nice and we had a great tour of it this morning. I can’t wait to go use the gym, maybe catch a movie or something and I love the view of the volcano! It’s blowing my mind! I think it’s a beautiful, beautiful area and I look forward to seeing Medusa and I hope she doesn’t turn me to stone. TS: Is there anything “David McMahon” would like to add? DC: I would just like to thank Navy Entertainment for having me out and the MWR crew has been awesome! I mean everybody that I have encountered so far has been super nice, gracious and have gone out of their way to show me a nice time. I really appreciate being able to do this and it’s an honor. TS: Any words for the kids? DC: Keep on singing and dancing. Thank you for enjoying my music and giving me the opportunity to be your friend.

munity as a whole,” said Lt. Ricky McCallister, OB/GYN and Specialty Care Clinic Manager and an attendee of the course. “If everybody is working together toward a common goal, you get a broader spectrum of input and care.” The TeamSTEPPS concept is a significant step forward for Navy medicine in terms of patient safety, according to U.S. Naval Hospital Executive Officer CAPT Michial Warrington. “When I first started in the Navy, it was the ‘Captain of the ship’ mentality, and that carried on down through the ranks,” he said. “You didn’t really have a voice. Things like team huddles weren’t being done. Now they’re done every day.” Those “huddles” are what patients don’t see in the hospital. These short meetings are a way for doctors, nurses, and Corpsmen (among others) to essentially get on the same page prior to a procedure. ON THE GO WITH MWR ere’s no place like Rome for the holidays
Give yourself a gift this year. Spend Christmas in Rome with ITT! This ancient city is even more beautiful during the holidays. The streets are lined with lights, and there are Christmas markets and nativities around every corner. The Vatican has its special displays. An intricate nativity scene is set up inside Saint Peter’s Basilica, and a life-size nativity is revealed outside on Christmas day. This trip offers the once-in-alifetime opportunity to expe-
rience midnight mass at the Vatican. Even without tickets, the mass is projected in the crowded square. While millions watch on TV, you would be there with the Pope! Piazza Navona’s Christmas market is another site to behold. The square comes to life at Christmastime with vendors selling sweets, decorations and toys. Children run and laugh through the square, hoping for the chance to see Babbo Natale (Santa). Grab a warm bag of fresh roasted che-
stnuts and savor them as you browse the selection of unique gifts, nativities and toys shaped like Santa and La Befana, the old woman who delivers gifts to good kids during the Epiphany. ITT’s trip to Rome happens December 22 – 26. Transportation and hotel are included, along with three guided tours, entrance fees to the Vatican and Coliseum, several meals and an ITT escort for the entire trip. For more information and pricing, contact ITT at 624-4396 or visit www.sigmwr.com.
