ervice members stationed at Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella celebrated the 237th birthday of the United States Navy during the 2012 Navy Ball at Catania’s Sheraton Hotel on October 13 in Catania, Sicily. The Navy Ball is the annual event which celebrates the heritage, history and more specifically the day Congress created the United States Navy on October 13, 1775. “The Navy Ball is a great time-honored tradition that I look forward to every year,” said Capt. Scott Butler, NAS Sigonella’s commanding officer. “This celebration is a time where we as Sailors can enjoy and celebrate with family and friends to remember what the Navy has experienced and accomplished over it’s 237 years. Happy Birthday, Navy.” The ball began in the traditional fashion with the NAS Sigonella honor guard parading the colors and Italian and U.S. national anthems sung by Capt. Bryan Schumacher and Italian local nationals Rose La Rocca, Daniela Vecchio, Sabrina Perrotta and Grazia Finocchiaro. Vice Adm. William D. French, commander, Navy Installations Com-

mand, served as the guest speaker, as well as guest of honor for the ceremony. “About a year ago our Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Jonathan Greenert, brought forward a strategy that identified three basic points and principles of the Navy; warfighting first, operate forward and be ready,” said French. “With that said, the last two days I have been here in Sigonella, I will tell you there is no base that resembles those three topic points or principles more so than Naval Air Station Sigonella. Happy Birthday, Navy.” Following French’s remarks, Army Spc. Brian Patrick, Marine Corps Cpl. Anakai Bravo, Air Force Staff Sgt. Dawn Ebeulu and Navy Logistics Specialist Seaman Kristan Marks conducted a prisoner of war (POW) and missing in action (MIA) ceremony, led by U.S. Navy Lt. Rudy Mason, to remember those who are still held captive and missing in the line of duty. The 2012 Navy Ball closed with the official toast, ceremonial cake cutting by the youngest and oldest Sailor in attendance and dancing.

NAS Sigonella Command Master Chief, David Graham Buongiorno Sigonella, It’s hard to believe that October is almost over. It’s been a busy month and there are still quite a few activities left on the calendar. First of all, I would like to thank everyone involved in making last week’s Navy Ball such a success. The volunteers worked tirelessly organizing fundraising events, selling tickets, setting up the venue, etc. Their efforts made it a fun evening for those in attendance and making our Navy’s 237th birthday an event to remember. Speaking of events and volunteering, next week is our highly anticipated Autumn Fest, which runs from Friday, October 26 through Saturday, October 27 from 4 p.m. until midnight. MWR will be hosting their first ever “Run for your Life – Zombie Run” as well as the usual food booths, live music, games, and carnival rides. Make plans to come out and support all the local associations that will be providing food and beverages during the event. If you would like to help out in some way, I’m sure any of the numerous base associations that will be on hand would appreciate some extra help. So however you get out there, just get there! It’s sure to be a good time for everyone.

But with all this talk about having fun, don’t forget to be safe. As most of you have seen by now, the rainy season is upon us. Be careful when out on the roads and be sure to periodically inspect your vehicles and make sure they are in proper condition to handle the increased hazards during inclement weather. Look at your tires, windshield wipers, lights, etc. Be safe out there! It’s also flu season! Make it a point to get out and get your vaccinations. There are still a few days left to get either the shot or nasal mist. The dates, times and locations are as follows: October 24 from Noon 4 p.m. at Midtown, October 25 from 4 7 p.m. at Marinai, and October 26 from Noon - 4:45 p.m. at the Commissary. I’d like to take a moment to thank Commander Naval Installations Command (CNIC) Vice Admiral French for visiting with us. He had the opportunity to see firsthand the bases capabilities, capacities and flexibilities to include the operations for the past two years. He also sat down to have lunch with our Ombudsman for the annual Ombudsman appreciation lunch. He was as impressed as we are everyday with the dedication and sincerity of each of them. Finishing with a bang, the Admiral joined us in celebrating the Navy’s

237th birthday at the Navy Ball to continue a long honored tradition of the world’s greatest Navy. Last but not least, the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) is in full swing. Our goal this year is $180,000. I believe this is a very achievable goal as last year we raised more than $150,000. With more than 2,500 organizations to choose from, you can find a charity that is near and dear to your heart. So please support the CFC and help make a difference!

Sigonella Jaguars win 38-13 against Woodham Warriors The Sigonella Jags won 38 – 13 against the Woodham Warriors, October 15 at the Land Annex Field on NAS I. In a game that Sigonella used as a tune-up game for the playoffs, the Jags relied on the run to open up the passing game and scored the game’s first 17 points on two touchdowns through the air and a field goal. "I would like to give a heap of praise to my offensive linemen who paved the way this season for our run game,” Head Coach Matt McKown said. “We would not be where we are today without the blood, guts, and attitude of these five boys. Offensive line is not a glamour

position, but it is the engine that drives our offense." After trading touchdowns in the second quarter and being held to zero points in the third, Sigonella ran away with the game in the fourth, scoring two more touchdowns and holding the Warrior offense to six points in the second half. The Jags next game is on the road against Baumholder for the first round of the playoffs, October 20. “We feel relatively confident in the performance of the boys heading into the playoffs,” McKown said. “We have no injuries and are in the right mindset for playing Baumholder.”

New Eagle Scout at NASSIG Sigonella's Matt Kinsman of Troop 53 took the oath of Eagle Scout, September 28, joining the two percent of Boy Scouts that advance to that rank. Kinsman was born at U.S. Naval Hospital Sigonella in 1995 and is the only "native" Sigonellan that has become an Eagle Scout while in Sicily. His formal Court of Honor, conducted by Troop 53 Scoutmaster Lt. James Simpson of the local NCIS STAAT, was attended by family and friends from throughout the Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella community and by Italian Scout Troop 2 from Catania, making the ceremony an international event. A high school senior at the Department of Defense Dependents’ School Sigonella, Kinsman has been diligently working for many years on rank and merit badge requirements to reach the pinnacle of scouting. Almost a year ago his Scouts Food Drive, a community service project requirement for Eagle Scout, brought nearly two tons of food supplies to a Catania soup kitchen for the holidays and was the single largest food donation in the history of the charity. Earning a total of 21 merit badges and completing an extensive list of outdoor skills and rank requirements, Kinsman was sworn into the Eagle brotherhood by Eagle Scout Hospital Corpsman Second Class James Ewen of U.S. Naval Hospital Sigonella. After the ceremony, Kinsman and the Sigonella Scouts provided a tour of NAS I to their Italian counterparts. Kinsman enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps earlier this summer and will graduate from boot camp at Parris Island, SC in September, 2013.

Roccapalumba, a picturesque village is located at the foot of a majestic 2,000 foot-high-rock. The city is about 40 miles from Palermo. Over the past years, Roccapalumba has become famous for its two astronomical observatories and planetarium which earned it the nickname “town of the stars.” Prickly pears are the feature of the festival which begins in the historic center at 5 p.m. on October 19. Prickly pears' cactus is a variety of plant that is native to Mexico where it was known as "nopalli", or "nopal." According to tradition, it was brought to Spain by Christopher Columbus and from there it spread throughout the Mediterranean area. Prickly pear cactus can be found in the harsh deserts of Africa, the Americas, Australia, Africa and the Mediterranean region. Prickly pears are very healthy as they are rich in calcium, vitamins A and C, as well as in flavonoids and polyphenols, which have antioxidant properties. According to a tradition, the Arabs introduced the cultivation of prickly pear cactus in 827 A.D. Those plants, which have been used for centuries as windbreaks, produce tasty and beautiful yellow, red, and white fruits that are used to make ice creams, sweets, juices and liquors. In Sicily, prickly pears grow almost everywhere and they can be eaten now. Don't be scared about the seeds they are absolutely edible and safe to eat! Paternò mayor awards CTF-67 for COMREL project On October 9, Paternò Mayor Mauro Mangano hosted a ceremony in recognition of Task Force CTF-67/TOC volunteers for a community relations (COMREL) project carried out this summer. CTF-67 Commodore McClintock accepted a plaque of appreciation from Mangano. “It was a great experience," said Mangano. "We had Italian volunteers from the Strata Nova joining forces with U.S. Sailors. So this was particularly significant for our community that the two volunteer groups joined together. Hopefully in the future we can cooperate together again.” The COMREL was organized through the Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella Public Affairs Community Relations Program. CTF-67 volunteers joined forces with local nationals from Strata Nova and spent a morning cleaning up the "Sorgente delle lavandaie," a historic fountain in which women used to wash their clothes. "The men and women of CTF-67 were afforded the opportunity to participate in the COMREL projects with various communities," said McClintock. "It’s been an honor and a privilege to work with the town and the people of Paterno and make sure that we could support in this endeavor and we look forward to future opportunities, so we are very thankful for the opportunity that we were given to do this project." In attendance at the special event were Strata Nova President Vincenzo Velardo, Paternò Lions Club President Dino Distefano, who sponsored the project, Paternò Carabinieri, and Officer in Charge Lt.Col Lorenzo Provenzano as well as other city authorities. Italy raids after Calabria council fired for 'mafia ties' (Story by BBC News) Italian police have recently conducted raids and arrests in Reggio Calabria after the government sacked the southern city's council over alleged mafia links. The arrests targeted a branch of the 'Ndrangheta crime syndicate accused of exploiting rubbish collection. Assets worth more than 30m Euros (£24m) were being seized in several regions, officials said. The sacking was the first time the entire government of a provincial capital had been fired in such a case. All 30 city councilors were sacked to prevent any "mafia contagion" in the local government, Interior Minister Annamaria Cancellieri said. The world beyond Italy has barely heard of the 'Ndrangheta network. But here it is seen as a formidable force that is now much more powerful than its better known counterpart, the Sicilian Mafia. The 'Ndrangheta is particularly closely knit and hard for law enforcement agencies to penetrate. It is sophisticated and ambitious. It operates across Europe and has connections with Colombian drug cartels. Recently there's been renewed concern about the extent of 'Ndrangheta activity in Canada. In the past few years the extent of the network's operation in northern Italy has become apparent. But its heartland is very much the southern region of Calabria, where it emerged. It is no surprise that the organization has sought to penetrate the administration of the provincial capital, Reggio Calabria. Having the council in its grip would have given the gangsters easier access to the local and national funds flowing through the city. The administration's business dealings, its awarding of contracts and so on could have been skewed in the favor of the network and its associates. Three commissioners will run the city for 18 months until the next elections. Italy's parliamentary anti-mafia commission has described the 'Ndrangheta as the country's most dangerous and wealthiest crime syndicate, overtaking the Sicilian Mafia and becoming one of the world's biggest criminal organizations.

Among those arrested in Reggio Calabria on Wednesday on charges including mafia association were the suspected head of the Fontana clan, a branch within the 'Ndrangheta, and the director of a company that runs rubbish collection for the city. Police were taking possession of goods and property in Reggio Calabria, Rome and Tuscany. Also last Wednesday, security forces arrested a member of the local government in the northern city of Milan accused of paying 200,000 Euros to 'Ndrangheta in exchange for 4,000 votes. Officials said housing Commissioner Domenico Zambetti was accused of corruption, mafia association and vote-buying. Authorities have become increasingly concerned about 'Ndrangheta's growing influence in northern Italy and elsewhere in Europe. Cocaine is thought to be its biggest source of revenue, along with extortion and money laundering. Following news of the dissolution of the Reggio Calabria city council for its criminal ties to the ’Ndrangheta mafia, Santo Versace — a native of the southern Italian port city — expressed sadness to , but no surprise. In an interview published by www.wwd.com he was quoted as saying: “Organized crime, whether Calabrian, Sicilian, from Campania or Apulia, is in every corner of this wretched Italy and the world,” the Versace chairman told the Corriere della Sera in an interview published Thursday. The older brother of Gianni and Donatella Versace added that when the three were kids, their parents raised them to respect honesty and play by the rules. “It’s always a question of mentality,” he said. “In the Fifties, my father, who sold vegetable charcoal in a shop and wholesale, received threats of extortion but went straight to the police and filed a report: they left him in peace. My mother, on the other hand, who had the tailor shop where Gianni trained, was never harassed.” Versace has been a member of the Italian Parliament since 2008. After several years with former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s Popolo della Libertà (People of Freedom) party, in 2011 he switched to the Alleanza per l’Italia (Alliance for Italy) party.

NASSIG learns about fire safety a

Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella service and community members joined together at Marinai Housing Complex on October 11 for the first annual Fire Prevention Night held by NAS Sigonella Fire & Emergency Services (FES), part of Fire Prevention Week, October 7 – 13. “This event is the [FES] version of National Night Out,” said NAS Sigonella FES Chief Fire Inspector John Roush. “The purpose of tonight is to educate the community on fire and life safety. However, we should practice fire safety all year long. Many potential fire hazards go undetected because people simply do not take steps to fireproof their home.” Fire Prevention Night consisted of many games and activities for children including a tricycle relay, trivia for prizes and two coloring contests. Many different display booths focused on different parts of fire prevention. NAS Sigonella Red Cross had a booth dedicated to CPR training. In addition to the Sigonella community, the event welcomed 15 children from Pio IX Institute from Catania. Roush said children Pio IX were very energetic and enthusiastic about the chance to learn about fire safety. “Each table was designed for kids to take part in an activity before getting a free giveaway, ” said Roush. "The kids were very responsive to each table and had a blast learning. I’ve [never]seen kids more involved. As an added bonus, I also noticed the parents getting involved a lot at the tables with their children.” Fire Prevention Week was declared by President Calvin Coolidge in 1925. The week always falls in October to remember the Great Chicago Fire, which occurred on October 8 – 9. Fire Prevention Night is also the focus throughout America of an annual fire, safety, and awareness campaign sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association. For more information on fire safety and prevention, contact Roush via phone at 624-0564 or 335-599-8559, or by email at john.rousch@eu.navy.mil.

“Where’s my mail?” BY JILL WARNING NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center Sigonella

We all look forward to our mail: birthday cards, grandma’s cookies, auto parts, books, clothing, love letters, chess moves- just about anything besides a bill (and most of those are online now!). This anticipation leads us all, at some point, to ask: “Where’s my mail?” The NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center Sigonella Postal Division works with the Military Postal Service (MPS) and United States Postal Service® (USPS) to manage your mail. Sailors and civilians collaborate to ensure mail is transported securely, efficiently, and economically. Security for privacy and identity information; efficiency for the fastest transit possible; and economy to ensure the longevity of the MPS. At a U.S. Post Office, USPS scans packages and letters as individual items. Next, USPS transports mail to a strategically located gateway. For example, mail bound for Europe is often processed at a New York gateway. USPS scans mail as it arrives at the gateway; then sorts it into bags, trays, and other Mail Transportation Equipment (MTE) (“containers”), which are sealed before departure. USPS sorts and ships packages and letters into containers based on shipping rate. First-Class® is the most common rate used for letters transported by plane. For packages, Priority Mail® or Parcel Post® are both available to US customers. Priority Mail is all shipped by plane. Parcel Post, although less expensive, takes longer; it travels by ship when possible, and accumulates at the gateway until sufficient volume is reached; this can take up to 60 days. Let grandma know about the timeframes associated with the different rates, so her cookies arrive in good shape. Also, be sure to use online vendors who offer a Priority Mail option if timeliness is important to you. There is great information on Military Mail at the USPS website- simply go to http://faq.usps.com/ and search ‘How Military Mail is Processed.’ Once the containers are sealed and labeled, each one is scanned and routed to a specific OCONUS location. MPS coordinates with airlines and shipping companies

to transport the containers out of the US, to theater, then to a military mail facility. Once a container is opened for processing, MPS scans individual items and delivers them to you. Changing air routes, complex cargo schedules and human error are a few of the many variables that can make pinpointing an exact delivery date difficult; however you can be rest assured that your mail is on its way, and that NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center Sigonella is safeguarding its security along the way. For more information on deliveries and how our postal professionals can better serve you, please contact the NAS I Post Office at 624-4477, the Fleet Mail Center at 624-5915, or the NAS II Post Office at 624-2265.
