he Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella Base Soccer Team along with Sailors from NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center Sigonella (FLC) and USS Klakring (FFG 42) participated in a community relations (COMREL) project in the small Sicilian town of Floridia on July 14. “Today’s [COMREL] of their soccer stadium was a giant success,” Logistics Specialist Seaman, James Weymouth said. “I had a blast hanging out and helping the people in this community.” Joining NAS Sigonella Sailors for the COMREL project

were many Floridia local nationals including Associazione Nazionale Vigili del Fuoco in congedo (Floridia retired firefighters), a group of Boy Scouts and a group of volunteers called Politeia Vox. The COMREL project focused on the beautification and clean-up of a main sports arena in the area of Floridia. The Sailors were also able to help adjust and improve the infrastructure of the arena. “A soccer match between the NAS Sigonella soccer team and the Floridia Carabinieri was supposed to be held after completion of the COMREL; however,

due to extreme heat conditions, the match was postponed. At the end of the day Floridia Mayor, Orazio Scalorino expressed his appreciation for the NAS Sigonella Sailors on behalf of the community. “I would like to thank those generous sailors for their [COMREL] project which showed great interaction with local volunteers,” Scalorino said. “Joining forces with the American counterparts to carry out a sport facility's beautification activity will benefit the residents." Scalorino will officially thank NAS Sigonella Sailors on July 28 during the Fourth annual Bianca

Floridiana cultural event which features exhibitions, ballets and concerts. “We will present the base with a volunteer award which shows hard work and dedication by our American friends,” Scalorino added. NAS Sigonella Commanding Officer Capt. Scott Butler I want to thank the folks from the Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) and Drug Education For Youth (DEFY) for joining us on Feedback Live last week. It is truly an honor to serve alongside such a great group of Sailors that help others by donating their often scarce free time to educate and mentor our junior Sailors and the youth of the Sigonella community. I encourage everyone to follow their example: please get involved and support some of these great organizations. Since we had some great topics on the show last week, I wasn’t able to get to all of your questions. I can never figure out how 30 minutes passes so quickly? I want to continue to answer your questions and address your concerns, so I’ll do so in this Direct Line. I can’t promise that we can solve every issue, but I certainly can’t address it if I don’t know about it, so please keep sending your questions. Remember that Feedback Live is a LIVE call in show – and we try to answer your questions on the spot – and those that we can’t get to during the show will still get answered. Is it possible to make sure the library remains a quiet place during the summer for all students, including college students, to study? I have gone there several times last week and only once was this a reality. There were other children trying to read as well and were bothered by all the unnecessary noise so I am not alone in this struggle. I’ve been in the Library many times and have never encountered what you de-

scribe, but I’ve passed this on to the dedicated Library staff and have asked them to ensure their customers keep an appropriate noise level in the Library so that the community will have adequate spaces to read and study. Those who live on NAS 2 don't have the luxury of keeping their BAS, instead it goes to the galley, if they eat there, or off into 'Big Navy' if they don't. One thing that would help would be a great salad bar. That would attract more people. My question is, for those of us who are limited to the galley (because we don't receive our extra BAS) why are our requests for choices of better food denied? If funding is an issue then why can we not then have our BAS reinstated to us for us to purchase our daily meals as we see fit? Our food service professionals, U.S. military and Local National alike, are committed to providing the best food options possible, including the best salad bar; however, they are constrained by meal cost, and the more people that eat at the Galley, the better the service we can offer. If you choose not to eat at the galley, we don’t receive your BAS. Our collective goal is to offer the best possible meal we can to you, our customers. With only a few exceptions, the Galley has been able to take advantage of the suggestions received during the Menu Review Board and put those into action. If you have constructive comments and suggestions, please share them in this monthly forum. that experiences loss of internet connection frequently every day. I’m sorry if you are experiencing these issues so frequently and hope that you report these kinds of problems directly to the BCO Help Desk – it’s what I do, too. The Help Desk has always provided assistance until my problems have been resolved, and I am sure that it’s not simply because I’m the Skipper. Many factors may influence the service stability especially at NAS I and Marinai, including frequent power fluctuations, but BCO will help with trouble shooting, to include replacement of inside and outside cables, modems and boxes.

Fleet Forces chief named next MCPON By MARK D. FARAM Navy Times staff writer

Fleet Master Chief (AW/NAC) Mike Stevens, currently the top sailor at Fleet Forces Command, will be the next Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy. Stevens will serve as the 13th MCPON, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert announced Wednesday at a Pentagon news conference. Stevens will replace current MCPON (SS/SW) Rick West at the end of September, after what’s expected to be a monthlong turnover. In a statement to Navy Times, Stevens said he’s honored to serve as No. 13. “MCPON Rick West has certainly made a lasting and positive impact on our Navy,” Stevens said. “I look forward to continuing to provide the leadership and commitment that our Navy and our sailors both deserve and expect.” It’s the end of a nearly three-month search that began when West announced his retirement March 22, kicking into gear a selection process to find a successor. In the search, Greenert interviewed 12 candidates — each for an hour — before narrowing his choice to Stevens. “I think I cast a fairly wide net,” Greenert told Navy Times on Monday, without letting go of the name of his choice. “I am looking for the best and fully qualified. The MCPON is not your grandfather’s MCPON today, as you can see. This guy has to get out in front of people, carry our message.” Greenert said MCPON must be “socially adept,” a communicator and has got to understand the needs of the Fleet. Even the current MCPON didn’t know Greenert’s choice until the last moment. While not personally involved in the search, West was involved in revamping it for the new MCPON, limiting those who can compete for the job to only command master chiefs who’ve served for three- and four-star flag officers. Stevens has spent most of his career in the aviation community. A native of Montana, he joined the Navy right after high school in May 1983, shipped off to basic training in San Diego and then attended Aviation Structural Mechanic “A” School in Millington, Tenn. His first fleet assignment was with Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron 2 in Rota, Spain. His aviation career touched both fixed-wing and helicopters. He’s also served in recruiting and as an instructor. His ascension to the CMC ranks was a little out of the ordinary. Putting on master chief in October 2002, he was assigned to Fleet Composite Squadron 8 in Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico, as both the maintenance master chief and the CMC. A year later, he formally became a CMC and was assigned to the top enlisted spot at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fla. It wasn’t until the end of that tour that he attended the Senior Enlisted Academy in Newport R.I., normally a prerequisite for getting a CMC job. Since then, he’s been the top enlisted sailor at Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 14 and the Helicopter Sea Combat Wing, both in Norfolk, Va. His first fleet job came in January 2009, when he became the U.S. Second Fleet command master chief. He was named as the Fleet Forces Command Fleet Master Chief in August 2010 and was the 16th sailor to hold the Atlantic Fleet’s top enlisted job.

Saint James Festival in Caltagirone In the evening, over 4,000 coppi (colored oil lamps or lanterns) are illuminated, forming a glowing shape on the magnificent Santa Maria del Monte steps, which are decorated with mesmerizing majolica tiles consisting of 142 steps. The steps will stay lit on July 24 and 25. A fireworks show is held at 9:30 p.m. from the top of the stairs. On July 25, a parade in period costumes, which is attended by the local authorities, is held throughout the city center at 10:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. The religious procession with the Saint James relics and the statue begins at 9 p.m. from the Church of San Giacomo. Music shows will be performed piazzale Sant'Orsola at 9 p.m. A photo exhibit, featuring photos of places described by Sicilian writers, will be held at the Corte Capitaniale palace (located in via Duomo near the main square) through Sept. 2. For more information and to confirm events’ date, time and location, call Caltagirone Tourist Office 0933-41365, visit www.comune.caltagirone.ct.it or email to servizio-informazionituristiche@comune.caltagirone.ct.it

Saint Sebastian Festival in Ferla tonight

Bring the whole family to enjoy the summer events which will be held in Caltagirone, the breathtaking "city of ceramics" which is located a stone's throw from Sigonella. From July through the beginning of August, Caltagirone will be honoring its beloved patron saint, San Giacomo or Saint James, with concerts, enchanting decorated light displays, religious processions and spectacular fireworks in amazing and spectacular backdrops. The Festa di San Giacomo is among the most important events in town. This year's processions, all leaving from the Church of St. James, will take place on July 25, 31 and Aug. 1 in the town's historic center. The origin of the festival dates back to July 25, 1090, when Count Roger the Norman, defeated the Moors, liberating Caltagirone’s townspeople from their rule. According to tradition, St. James appeared during the battle riding a white horse to support Roger whose armies eventually defeated the Saracens. Thus, the Norman Count erected a temple to honor the saint. In 1457, Giovanni Burgio, the Bishop of Manfredonia, donated a relic of St. James, a part of the arm bone, to the city of Caltagirone. The relic is placed inside a blessing hand-shaped reliquary. Fifteen years later, Antonello da Messina, the famous Sicilian painter, portrayed St. James, but the painting was destroyed together with the church that hosted it in a terrible earthquake that occurred in 1693. In 1518, Vincenzo Archifel, a sculptor from Catania, made a statue depicting St. James. Since that year, the celebrations for St. James have been enriched by an external procession during which his statue tours the streets of Caltagirone. In 1691, the relic of St. James was moved to a magnificent silver box made by the Gagini brothers. The box is among the masterpieces of Italian sacred art. The festival opens on July 24 with a magnificent parade in period costumes featuring actors that represent the “distinguished members” of the 18th century city’s Senate and it is attended by the city military and civilian authorities. The parade leaves from piazza Municipio (where the city hall is located) at 8 p.m.

f you’re looking for a day trip that will include exploring history, culture, and a quiet picnic at the lake, consider a road trip to Agira and Regalbuto. Agira is a town in the province of Enna. It is approximately 66 kilometres from NAS II and 60 kilometers from NAS I. Regalbuto sits due east of Agira at approximately 15 kilometers. In between sits the largest artificial lake in Sicily, Lago Pozzillo. It takes about an hour to travel to Agira. History abounds in both cities due to the strategic nature of where they were founded. Both towns have a commanding view of the valleys below. This fact was not lost on the Axis powers during World War II, as Agira and Regalbuto were violently defended during the Sicilian campaign. The towns, due to their strategic locations on high ground, were among the last defensive positions held by the

Germans before they were driven from the island. Once inside Agira, look for signs for SS121. This will take you directly (sort of) to Regalbuto. As you travel along SS121, be sure to stop and visit the Canadian War Memorial just o the highway (GPS 37.65458,14.5502). As you enter Regalbuto, there is a monument dedicated to the 2nd Battalion, Devonshire Regiment of the British army. Both cities contain impressive remains of castles and, as is the case in many Sicilian towns, many historical and beautiful churches. After a day of sightseeing, grab a bite to eat from any of the local eateries and head down to Lago Pozzillo. From there you can enjoy the views looking back up to both towns and a wonderful view of Etna. If you are interested in an overnight visit, there are also several agriturismo locations in the area.

NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER Recently, some samples from our water system contained levels of “bromate” above the level allowed by the Italian legislation and DoD Final Governing Standards (FGS) for Italy. Bromate is a chemical compound that may be formed in different ways in municipal drinking water systems. Given this incidence, we intend to keep our community members informed about what happened and what we are doing to fix problems related to the water system. We routinely monitor our water systems for the presence of contaminants. Test results from sampling events conducted in June and recently received indicate that the water system for the Marinai Housing Area may have exceeded the U.S. and Italian maximum contaminant level (MCL) for the chemical “bromate”, which is 10 micrograms per liter (parts per billion). The MCL is the maximum level of “bromate” acceptable in the water system. Bromate levels reported to us on 10 July 2012 ranged between 12 and 16 micrograms per liter at Marinai. In addition to our routine sampling, the lessor of Marinai, who is responsible for the site’s drinking water system, performs his own sampling and testing. Their most recent sampling, also conducted in early June, showed bromate levels at 8 micrograms per liter, slightly below the MCL, and therefore within acceptable limits, while sampling they conducted in late June resulted in bromate levels of 14 micrograms per liter, slightly above the MCL, and in concurrence with our results. We are currently working with the lessor to perform additional sampling to confirm the elevated bromate levels, and to determine a cause and corrective actions.

What happened? What is being done? The suspected source of the Bromate is chemicals that are used to disinfect and treat the water. We are working with the lessor to reduce levels of bromate, and will be performing additional testing throughout the following year to ensure bromate levels are reduced and remain below the MCL. What does this mean? Bromate at the levels measured does not cause any symptoms. However, bromate is classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a possible human carcinogen and by the EPA as a probable human carcinogen. Some people who ingest bromate at levels above the MCL for an extended period of time may have an increased risk of developing cancer. The allowable level of bromate in drinking water is set to prevent cancer from developing in individuals who consume two quarts of drinking water daily over the course of a lifetime. What should I do? The levels of bromate found in Marinai’s water do not pose a short-term health risk. Drinking water at Marinai housing remains safe for consumption. Filtration systems will not remove bromate from the water. If you have specific health concerns, you should consult your doctor or U.S. Naval Hospital Sigonella Medical Home Port at 335-578-8077.

Caltagirone “Scala Illuminata” BY JAMIE ANDREWS Morale, Welfare and Recreation, Sigonella

C

altagirone’s famous steps are set to glow next week in honor of the city’s patron Saint James. The pretty little Baroque town is known for its ceramics, and its streets are lined with shops where ceramic vases, dishes, jewelry and figurines are on display, each hand painted by the careful artisan working the pottery wheel in the back room. Caltagirone is worth a visit just for the shopping, but each July during the Festa di San Giacomo the city becomes even more exciting. St. James has been celebrated here every year since 1591. The festival happens every 24th and 25th of July. It’s a family affair where kids, parents and grandparents fill the Duomo for its events, live music and sweets. The parade marches the streets carrying the statue that holds their sacred relic, a portion of the apostle’s arm bone. But the main attraction is the luminary spectacle

created on the stairs of Santa Maria del Monte. The 142 steps that are already beautifully decorated with hand stained ceramic tiles are covered in a woven tapestry of candlelight. There are 4000 little lights made of terracotta with cotton wicks that are filled with olive oil. They are displayed on the steps and formed into a picture to honor their saint. Hundreds of people pack into the square to witness the traditional illuminated design, or “scala illuminata”, and return the next night to see a new picture, changed from the night before. The evening ends with all eyes turned to a sky full of fireworks. It’s a Sicilian celebration that’s not to be missed. ITT is going to Caltagirone for both nights of the Festa di San Giacomo, July 24th and 25th. Take the whole family to witness the luminary display first hand! Sign up at ITT or call 624-4396 for more information.

Did you know? Maine is the only state whose name is just one syllable. Mel Blanc (the voice of Bugs Bunny) was allergic to carrots. One quarter of the bones in your body are in your feet. "Stewardesses" is the longest word that is typed with only the left hand. The airplane Buddy Holly died in was the "American Pie." (Thus the name of the Don McLean song)
