ore than 50 students from the Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella community received their college degrees during the 2013 commencement ceremony sponsored by the Navy College Office (NCO) Sigonella, June 12, at the NAS I chapel. Chapel violinist, Isidoro Cavallaro opened the ceremony followed by the NAS Sigonella Color Guard who carried out the posting of the colors. Thea Burke performed the Italian and American national anthems. NAS Sigonella Commanding Officer Capt. Chris Dennis delivered the welcome address to the students. “I want to take a second to talk to the graduates and tell you on behalf of your

Navy and your country, how proud all of us are of you for your accomplishment," said Dennis. Dennis then introduced the guest speaker, President of University of Maryland University College Javier Miyares. “I am aware that you have overcome a lot of obstacles on your way to receiving your diploma," Miyares said. “For me, higher education offered an edge, a purpose, a place where I belong. For this I have always been grateful. Higher education opens the door of opportunity and its impact can be far reaching." Students were awarded degrees from more than nine institutions, ranging from associate to master's. University of

Maryland University College awarded 38 degrees. For the students graduating, it was an emotional and rewarding day. “You know it’s important to have a degree but it doesn’t fully hit you until they call your name and you’re able to really be recognized for the accomplishment,” Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Cameron Bramham said after receiving his associate degree. “Even though I still have a couple more credits before I’m ready to move on to my bachelor’s degree, I was hit with a lot of different emotions. It’s one of the best feelings you can have!” For more information on Navy College programs, go to https://www.navycollege. navy.mil/.

NAS Sigonella Executive Officer, Cmdr. Eric Vosler As the Skipper said in last week’s column, Health and welfare is one responsibility of being an active “citizen.” And this could mean one of many things, but in this case I want to address one – Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR). Those who attended the most recent SAPR training picked up some valuable information to help rid our Navy of this crime. I know we often say, “these things can’t happen to me” or “these things don’t happen here,” but they can and do! It’s our responsibility as “citizens” to make sure that we are taking care of our fellow shipmates and our families. Several factors play a key role in preventing Sexual Assault. For starters in nearly every case of sexual assault, alcohol is involved. Simply put, drunk people do stupid things, and in many of these cases alcohol use was directly related to the assault. This can range from the aggressor being intoxicated and doing something they normally wouldn’t do, or more often the victim being too drunk to stop or avoid the assault. So first and foremost, always drink responsibly and never drink so much that you lose control.

A second prevention factor is to pick your friends wisely and stick by them when you go out. A good friend will step in when you are going too far and being inappropriate as well as come to your aid if you are in a dangerous situation that can lead to an assault. If you are that friend, don’t just stand by and let your buddies do something he or she will regret. We need to look out for our shipmates and have the courage to tell them when they are out of line, or to step in when they are intoxicated and being taken advantage of. Friends that don’t have the courage to step in and do the right thing are not friends worth having. A final factor is to always have situational awareness about the place you are at. This especially applies if you are going out on the town and having drinks. A study done in Australia showed that the chance of being assaulted almost doubled in hotels and clubs. These are places where you really need to be aware of yourself and the friends you are with. Use common sense, stay in a group, and never let your friends or you own drink out of sight. Sexual assault has no place in the

JUST SAY Pra ctice

The “U pisci a mari” pantomime, staged on June 24, is one of the highlights of the annual and centuries old religious festival honoring Saint John the Baptist, the Acitrezza patron saint. (Photo by www.scuolagalatea.it)

St. John the Baptist Festival in Acitrezza Every June 24, Saint John the Baptist (San Giovanni Battista), their patron saint of the Catholic community of Acitrezza, an enchanting fishermen’s village, is honored with a religious festival featuring procession and a spectacular pantomime celebrating the village maritime heritage. This Catholic festa, or festival, is a major religious event in the Catania province. Trizzoti (Acitrezza townspeople) have been celebrating it for over 300 years. Acitrezza fishermen have a special relationship with this festival. Due to the risky nature of their job, fishermen invoke St. John the Baptist for protection when they are at sea. During the festival, they decorate their boats and stage the spectacular pantomime named “U pisci a mari” (The fish in the sea). Sicilian folklore historian Monsignor Giovanni Lanzafame described with vivid words the meaning of this dramatic performance: “Some say that the pantomime that is staged in Acitrezza is actually an ancient propitiatory rite aimed at bringing good luck to the fishermen during the swordfish fishing activity. Despite the jubilation displayed during the festival, I believe that the life of the fishermen is somehow imbued with a sense of melancholy. Even though they work hard, they don’t always bring fish home.” The festival takes place from June 23 through 25. Highlights include religious processions that will be held throughout the historic center and along the seaside. Spectacular performances such as the above mentioned “U pisci a mari” pantomime and the “Calata dell’Angelo” (Descent of the Angel) would also be staged. The festival revolves around the “Parrocchia di San Giovanni Battista” (St. John the Baptist Parish) in which the wooden statue depicting San Giovanni Battista and the saint’s relics are kept. Prince Stefano Riggio, the founder of Acitrezza, built the Parrocchia di San Giovanni Battista in 1693 to replace another church erected in 1678 and dedicated to San Giuseppe (Saint Joseph), which had been destroyed by a violent earthquake. Shortly after the construction of that church, the people of Acitrezza made a statue depicting San Giovanni Battista to honor their beloved saint. Today, historians are still debating on who carved this beautiful sculpture. Some stories say that the sculptor was a trizzoto named Castorina or Lo Faro. Legend has it that the artist locked himself up inside the Palazzo del Principe di Acitrezza (Palace of the Prince of Acitrezza) for three months and carved the statue, taking as a model a member of the Giletti family from Acitrezza. Other legends say that the eccentric sculptor would accept food only if it was lowered from the palace’s roof, whose tiles were temporarily removed. For that reason, nobody saw the statue until it was finished. When the sculpture was ready, it was placed in a small niche above the main altar named “Cammaredda” where it is still preserved today. The statue is over 300 years old but it is still in excellent condition, a feature that has contributed to the mystique surrounding this amazing piece of art.

On June 23, the eve of the main festival day, Holy Mass is celebrated at 8 a.m. At 6 p.m., the town band will perform throughout the historic center. Later, a holy mass will be celebrated at the St. John the Baptist Parish. On June 24, the festival starts at 10 a.m. with the moving unveiling of the statue. At 10:30, the bishop of Acireale celebrates a solemn Holy Mass at the St. John the Baptist Parish. In the afternoon, “U pisci a mari” is staged in the Urnazza district at 5 p.m. and begins with a group of fishermen in castoff clothing (a straw hat, a red shirt, tattered shorts, and a yellow sash; yellow and red are the colors of the saint) tied together by a rope walking towards the pier while dancing and singing among a large crowd. Three performers jump on a boat that is decorated with flowers and yellow and red ribbons. The fourth actor, a skilled swimmer who plays the swordfish, dives into the water. The fifth performer plays the Raisi, or crew leader. He places himself on the highest point of the pier giving directions to capture the fish. Once the swordfish is sighted, the Raisi shouts phrases in ancient Sicilian inciting the fishermen to catch it. After several attempts, the fish is eventually caught. The fishermen hoist it aboard and try to butcher it. But the swordfish manages to escape twice. The fishing goes on and the fishermen capture the swordfish again (this time it is a real one, usually a dead shark or tuna fish). But once again, while the fishermen are about to praise the tastiness of the fish, it escapes, disappearing into the sea. The fishermen give up in despair, argue and overturn the boat. The pantomime is over. After a town band concert throughout the historic center, the solemn procession of the saint’s relics and statue starts from piazza Giovanni Verga 7 p.m. Devotees screaming “Viva San Giovanni” (Long live St. John) escort the statue depicting the saint. The Giarre town band will perform a concert in the main square at 9 p.m. At 10:30 p.m., the Calata dell’Angelo (Descent of the Angel) is staged in piazza delle Scuole. At the end of the tour (around 11:30 p.m.), devotees perform the Cussa (the run) that consists of covering the last route of the procession running while carrying the statue. A spectacular midnight firework show ends the festivities while the statue is placed back into the Parrocchia di San Giovanni. On the last day of the festival, June 25, holy mass is celebrated at 11:30 a.m. at the St John Parish. At 7 p.m., a procession leaves from piazza Giovanni Verga. At 11 p.m., amazing fireworks will be staged. The festival will then end with the Cussa performance. For more information, visit www.parrocchiaacitrezza.it

Opera Festival in Taormina this summer by TaorminaArte Press Office The ancient Greek theatre of Taormina is scheduled to host the performances of Rigoletto, Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci as part of the summer TaorminaArte Festival which includes an array of concerts and dance shows featuring international artists through September. These world famous opera will be staged between July and August. Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi: July 7and 9 Rigoletto is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi. The Italian libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave based on the play Le roi s'amuse by Victor Hugo. It was first performed at La Fenice in Venice on March 11, 1851. Its tragic story revolves around the licentious Duke of Mantua, his hunch-backed court jester Rigoletto, and Rigoletto's beautiful daughter Gilda. The opera's original title, La maledizione (The Curse), refers to the curse placed on both the Duke and Rigoletto by a courtier whose daughter had been seduced by the Duke with Rigoletto's encouragement. The curse comes to fruition when Gilda likewise falls in love with the Duke and eventually sacrifices her life to save him from the assassins hired by her father. "Rigoletto" has an exceptional cast: Carlos Almaguer, Gianluca Terranova, Rocio Ignacio, Gianfranco Montresor, with the Sicilian Lyric Choir directed by Francesco Costa and the Bellini Symphony Orchestra directed by Gianluca Martinenghi. Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni: August 8 and 12 Cavalleria Rusticana is an opera in one act by Pietro Mascagni to an Italian libretto by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti and Guido Menasci, adapted from a play written by Giovanni Verga based on his short story. Considered one of the classic verismo operas, it premiered on May 17, 1890, at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. In addition to being one of the most beloved operas and represented all over the world, is also the emblem par excellence of Sicily and the Mediterranean. Cast: Daniela Dessi making her debut in the role of Santuzza, paired with Fabio Fournillier engaged in the role of Turiddu, Giuseppina Piunti in the role of Lola, Maria José Trullu in Mamma Lucia. Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo: August 10 and 14 Pagliacci is an Italian opera in a prologue and two acts, with music and libretto by Ruggero Leoncavallo. Research reveals Italians taught French how to make wine (Italy Magazine) Early French winemakers learned how to make wine from the Italians, according to researchers at the University of Pennsylvania. Research has revealed that the arrival of Italian wine in France meant that locals copied the Italians and began to make wine. The French gave up their usual tipple, which was a hybrid drink of honey, wheat/barley, native wild fruits such as apple and herbs such as bog myrtle, yarrow and heather. The truth about early French viticulture was revealed after Etruscan amphorae and a limestone wine press were discovered at the ancient port site of Lattara in southern France. The discovery has provided the earliest known biomolecular archaeological evidence of grape wine and winemaking. They point to the beginnings of a Celtic or Gallic vinicultural industry in France c. 500BC to 400BC. Details of the discovery were published as 'The Beginning of Viniculture in France' in the latest issue of 'Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences'. Dr. Patrick McGovern, director of the Biomolecular Archaeology Laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology is the lead author on the paper, which was researched and written in collaboration with colleagues from France and the USA. Dr. McGovern said: "France's rise to world prominence in the wine culture has been well documented, especially since the 12th century, when the Cistercian monks determined by trial and error that Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were the best cultivars to grow in Burgundy." He added: "What we haven't had is clear chemical evidence, combined with botanical and archaeological data, showing how wine was introduced into France and initiated a native industry. "Now we know that the ancient Etruscans lured the Gauls into the Mediterranean wine culture by importing wine into southern France. This built up a demand that could only be met by establishing a native industry, likely done by transplanting the domesticated vine from Italy, and enlisting the requisite winemaking expertise from the Etruscans." Merchant quarters inside a walled settlement at the archaeological site of Lattara, c. 525BC to 475BC, held numerous Etruscan amphorae. Those analysed showed signs of residue on their interior bases where precipitates of liquids, such as wine, collect. Judging by their shape and other features, they were assigned to a specific Etruscan amphora type, likely manufactured at the city of Cisra (modern Cerveteri) in central Italy. After sample extraction, ancient organic compounds were identified by a combination of state-of-the-art chemical techniques. All the samples were positive for tartaric acid/tartrate, which is the biomarker for the Eurasian grape and wine in the Middle East and Mediterranean, as well as compounds deriving from pine tree resin. Herbal additives to the wine were also identified, including rosemary, basil and/or thyme, which are

native to central Italy where the wine was likely made. Masses of several thousand domesticated grape seeds, pedicels and even skin, excavated near the press, attest to its use for crushing transplanted, domesticated grapes and local wine production. This is the first clear evidence of winemaking on French soil.

BarillaPress pasta coming to McDonald's (Barilla Release) Milan - A real revolution: for the very first time there will be a pasta salad on the menu at McDonald's restaurants in Italy. From May 24, a fresh tasty salad has been available produced using Barilla pasta and simple genuine ingredients. A skillfully balanced mix of tuna fish, tomatoes, bell peppers, capers and olives, flavored with a touch of oregano and salt, dress the Barilla pasta. The format that has been chosen is Barilla's wholegrain pennette, flavorful and rich in fiber. The introduction of the pasta salad responds to McDonald's desire to continue expanding its menus and make them increasingly varied and tasty to offer its consumers one more reason to visit the chain's restaurants. 'We are proud to be launching this partnership with Barilla, the symbolic company for pasta and a true icon of Made in Italy,' announces Roberto Masi, CEO of McDonald's Italia. 'For McDonald's, the launch of the pasta salad represents a crucial step in its drive to get closer to Italian tastes, flavors and habits. McDonald's has been carrying out with commitment and success this strategy of using typical Italian products which, on the one hand, responds to the tastes of the Italian people who are the main consumers and aficionados of pasta, and on the other, goes for the excellences of Italian production, of whom Barilla is a glowing example.' In recent years, along with its hamburgers and salads, McDonald's has been offering products that are typical of Italy's rich food culture, like Parmigiano Reggiano from Parma, Speck prosciutto from Alto Adige, Mozzarella and Asiago cheese, to name but a few. In this way, McDonald's customers got acquainted with typical Italian tastes and with products that have helped to make Italy famous around the world. Today, the range is being further expanded thanks to Barilla pasta. BERLIN, GERMANY

The Berlin Wall Monument now forms part of the Topography of Terror Documentation Center. It is one of the few surviving sections of the wall in the city and is the central site in the "Overall Concept for the Berlin Wall" developed by the Berlin Senate.

The ground on which the exhibitions stand was the site of the Gestapo, SS and Reich Security headquarters on Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse (now Niederkirchnerstrasse). Demolished and abandoned piers from the main driveway to Gestapo headquarters, which were left after the clearing of the site (1957-1963), with remnants of the metal fittings are displayed.

Another Berlin Wall Memorial site along the former border strip features the "Window of Remembrance," in honor of those who died trying to escape. At least 136 people lost their lives at the Berlin Wall between 1961-1989. Just below the wall, visitors learn at the series of displays that detail the events from 1933-1945.

A sign at the memorial site shows how the wall was tested by border guards and sportsmen who simulated escape attempts. The wall was rounded at the top making it more difficult to climb over.

Photos and article by jackie trembath NAS Sigonella Public Affairs A 200 meter section of the Berlin Wall was designated as historic monument in 1990 (above). *The Berlin Wall had stood since 1961, when it was erected by the Communist East German government to prevent residents of East Berlin from moving to West Berlin, an island of democracy in the center of East Germany. The 96-mile wall split families and friends, and became a symbol of the Cold War divisions between East and West, and communism and capitalism. East German guards were ordered to shoot anybody who attempted to cross to West Berlin, and nearly 100 people died trying to escape. In 1989 East and West Berliners began tearing down the Berlin Wall. Some may recall the historic speech given by President Ronald Reagan in West Berlin near the end of the Cold War on June 12, 1987. “There is one sign the Soviets can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace,” he proclaimed. “General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” *Excerpt from www.findingdulcinea.com

The date was November 9, 1989. I was not even in high school yet, but I remember the news. It was the day East and West Berliners began tearing down the Berlin Wall. As an American teenager who never planned to leave California, the closest I would ever come to seeing the Berlin Wall was on the TV screen in my parent's living room. Or so I thought. Fast forward almost 24 years. I am a military wife stationed in Europe. Of the many benefits this duty station presents, for me, travel opportunity tops the list. In less than 5 hours, I flew with a few friends from Sigonella, Sicily

to Berlin, Germany's capital and largest city, for a weekend getaway. Our one "must-do" was to see the Berlin Wall. The simplest way to check off sightseeing musts is by taking advantage of the convenience of the Hop-on, Hopoff bus tours available in most major cities. The HoHo (as I affectionately call it) provides a Cliff 's Notes version of the city's major attractions and includes transportation! For a directionally challenged person such as myself, the HoHo is ideal and offers options including one or two day tours and a variety of routes. Riding around Berlin, I was surprised at how industrial

PAGE 9

it is. There is no clear city centre. Berlin is not a city where you can get a good overview by taking a simple stroll. Thanks to the HoHo I was able to see the majority of Berlin's highlights and a get a brush up history lesson. Berlin was the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia, the German Empire, the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich. Following World War II, the city became ideologically and physically divided into East Berlin and West Berlin by the Berlin Wall. To see the wall in person was worth the trip to Berlin. Standing before the graffitied mass of concrete and metal

- a symbol which represents the division of the world but also liberty, freedom and democracy - was more than humbling. I thought back to the television images I had seen as a teenager of the Wall being torn down. I was too young to understand the real value of freedom then. I took it for granted. Fast forward almost 24 years. I am a military wife whose husband deployed nine times to Iraq and fought 316 combat missions as a helicopter doorgunner. I now know the value and the cost of freedom. And I am ever grateful.

(At left) The Brandenburg Gate (German: Brandenburger Tor) is a former city gate, rebuilt in the late 18th century as a neoclassical triumphal arch, and now one of the most well-known landmarks of Germany.

Approximately 1,000 graves had to be moved when the border strip was developed. It is possible that the graves of WWII bomb victims were not exhumed and that the border strip was built over the graves. This cross commemorates them.

It is located at the junction of Unter den Linden and Ebertstraße, immediately west of the Pariser Platz. The gate is the monumental entry to Unter den Linden, the renowned boulevard of linden trees, which formerly led directly to the city palace of the Prussian monarchs.

(At left) Checkpoint Charlie is the former border crossing. The original border post was demolished. A signpost bearing the words, 'You are entering the American sector' (above) and a replica of a watchtower from 1961 are a hit with tourists. For a fee, you can have your passport stamped with a "Checkpoint Charlie" stamp.

During the post-war Partition of Germany, the gate was isolated and inaccessible immediately next to the Berlin Wall, and the area around the gate featured most prominently in the media coverage of the opening of the wall in 1989.

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe consists of a 4.7-acre site covered with 2,711 concrete slabs of various heights arranged in a grid pattern on a sloping field. It was designed to produce an uneasy, confusing atmosphere. There is also a museum which is free of charge but not recommended for young children.

How the Berlin Wall Memorial should look and to whom it should be dedicated was long disputed. This memorial stone that the Sophien parish erected bears the dedication that the parish had originally favored. The Ten Commandments are written on the back.

he process for the FY13 Summer Teen Employment Program here in Sigonella began on May 29 with the Job Fair. This information session was organized and well thought out to get our local teens in the mode of job hunting, and preparing for their future. The sessions focused on skills such as resume and interview tips, banking information, the application process and MWR manager presentations of job introductions and expectations. All interested teens then created a resume and filled out the application packets, then waited for the CERT (qualified) notifications. This program is made possible due to a grant that was provided to Child and Youth Programs, and provides valuable life skills for all involved teens. Fast forward to the 8-minute interview process that resembled a speed dating scenario held on June 13. You could feel the tension and adrenaline in the air. The confidence shown during the interviews from our local teens was overwhelming. The teens were prepared with intelligent questions and thought provoking comments regarding the teen projects that they are required to complete during the summer hire program. The teens will gain insight into what the real working world will be like for them in the future and will lend valuable experience to their resumes and skill sets to make them competitive in any job market. The real question is who will benefit more the teens or the MWR departments that they will be working for? Please know that the teens you see working around the Midtown complex this summer have been well prepared and are providing a great support to our local programs.
