ailors from Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella cycled 160-miles around Sicily as part of the virtual Wounded Explosive Ordnance Disposal Warrior Foundation (WEODWF) Undefeated 2-Day bike ride fundraiser, September 22-23. The main WEODWF Undefeated 2-Day ride is held in the United States in San Diego, California in October to support the recovery of EOD techs wounded in action. Virtual riders from across the globe can participate by riding 160 miles at a time and location of their choosing. Inspired by the cause, Lt.j.g. Chris Gelakoska., Lt. Christina Bologna and Cmdr. Pamela Krahl from U.S. Naval Hospital Sigonella joined forces with Capt. Barry Tanner, U.S. Navy Reserve; Cmdr. Scott Needle, officer in charge, Executive Transport Detachment (ETD); Lt. Cmdr. Marc Overman, ETD and civilian Michael Boyle to embark on the 160-mile journey. They departed Marinai housing complex
early in the morning on September 22, heading into Sferro to refuel with a cappuccino and a breakfast pastry before getting back on the road. The group proceeded into Enna, stopped again briefly and returned to Marinai, completing day one. On Sunday, September 23, the cyclists rode through Agone, Augusta Bay, and Brucoli before turning around and heading back to base. “We participated in the ride as a way to give back to those EOD personnel that have given so much for us and to the United States for freedom," said Overman. "When it was over we were tired, but happy that we were able to complete the ride. Ours was a small challenge compared to the daily challenges the wounded warriors go through.” The group raised more than $2,980 by the end of the weekend and will continue to collect donations through the WEODWF website and various other fundraising events. The WEODWF is a non-profit organization that supports military

EOD families caring for their loved ones at military medical facilities across the country. Donations collected by the WEODWF are used to help wounded EOD warriors, from flying family out to Bethesda Naval Hospital to support and aid in their recovery to modifying cars with hand controls so amputees can drive and maintain independence to building wheelchair ramps in homes. “We look forward to the ride next year," said Overman. "Hopefully other riders will join us and make it an even bigger event. It’s a great way to raise awareness while getting out to experience parts of Sicily you might otherwise miss.” EOD techs disarm bombs, protecting their fellow service members, and the innocents nearby. Due to the nature of their work, EOD technicians experience the highest percentage rates of injuries within the military. According to the WEODWF website, 11 EOD warriors have been wounded in action this year alone.

“The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.” - Randy Pausch

NAS Sigonella Acting Command Master Chief Juancho Lucero Buongiorno Sigonella, September is about to close, after so many events that have taken place such as the advancement exams and the most recently concluded CPO Induction. These events would not be a success without the support of everyone and with that we “Thank you”. Also, I remind everyone that the fall Physical Fitness Assessmen(PFA) season is upon us and remind you that the command offers great wellness programs that could help improve your physical fitness. Whether utilizing the various MWR exercise classes or Health Promotions’ Healthy & Fit program, a 5-week course to assist you with Nutrition and Weight Management, these programs can help you maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. It’s hard to believe that it’s almost October. It’s been a busy year and with so much going on this month, here are a couple important reminders for your calendar. First, keep in mind that Election Day is rapidly approaching. To help get everyone registered for absentee voting, September 27 through October 4 has been designated as Absentee Voting Week. Every state should have already mailed out absentee ballots, so keep an eye out for them as the
deadline require voters in overseas installations to mail their absentee ballots by October 13. For more information and guidance, visit www.fvap.gov or email vote@navy.mil. Local POC’s are LCDR Aramburu at 624-2358 or ENS Blair at 624-2730. Saturday, October 13, is the Navy’s 237th birthday. Our Navy Ball Committee and their volunteers have been busy raising funds for this event, which will lower the price for our entire community. A great event that should not be missed, so get dressed up and enjoy a nice night out in town. Tickets can be purchased from your command's Navy Ball rep, or from sales booths outside the Exchange on NAS 1 and the 7-Day on NAS 2 (1100 1300 Tuesday & Thursday). Contact ABH1 Dahn at 624-8290, Lt. Chris Work at 624-2555, or Lt. Mason at 624-6754 for more information. Also in October is the highly anticipated Autumn Fest which runs from Friday, October 26 through Saturday, October 27 from 4 p.m. until midnight. MWR will be hosting their first ever “Run for your Life – Zombie Run” as well as the usual food booths, live music, games, and carnival rides. Last but not least, don’t forget that Co-
lumbus Day weekend is coming up. As we all know, these little vacations are a great time to take advantage of all the sights and adventures that Sicily and Europe have to offer. Just remember to factor safety into your plans, and remember it is NEVER OK to Drink and Drive. Proper prior planning prevents poor performance. Enjoy yourself and take advantage of every opportunity to better yourself in everything you do.

The Sigonella High School Jaguars took on the Bamberg High School Barons in a close match at the Land Annex Field on NAS I, September 22. The Jags kept it close throughout the entire game before falling in a hard fought battle, 31-28. “There’s no question that we fought hard and we fought to the end, never giving up until the final whistle,” said Chief Lewis Brickhouse, assistant defensive coach. “I think we did an outstanding job of not putting our heads down and feeling sorry for ourselves. Instead we kept believing we could win during the game. We as coaches can be proud of [our players] for having that kind of attitude.” The Jags quickly hit the scoreboard, scoring the first touchdown of the game after holding the Bamberg offense to a fourth down stop near the Jags goal line. Bamberg’s offense began to click during the second quarter and took the lead heading into halftime. The third quarter turned into a defensive struggle before the Jags closed it to a three point game in the fourth, before failing to convert an onside kick. Bamberg ran out the clock, claiming victory as the Jags dropped to 0-3 on the season. “We must tackle better and we have to cut down on our mistakes,” Brickhouse said. “Two mistakes is what cost us that ball game. We'll learn from those miscues, improve as a team and continue to move forward in the season.” The Jags travel next week to take on Menwith Hill before returning to Sigonella for their homecoming game on October 6 against Brussels.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), influenza results in more than 25 million reported cases, 150, 000 hospitalizations from serious complications and approximately 24,000 deaths each year in the United States. Influenza also has the potential to adversely impact Navy force readiness and mission execution. The flu vaccine is the best way modern medicine currently has to protect against this serious disease. The flu vaccine is now recommended for everyone. Remember, flu shot or the nasal spray flu vaccine doesn't protect you from the common cold. Hand washing, coughing or sneezing into your elbow rather than your hand, and staying home when you're ill are simple ways we can all help keep our community healthy! Talk to your healthcare provider if you have any questions regarding what flu vaccine options are best for you and your family. diness. Ombudsmen continuously demonstrate just how vital they are to helping our Navy families maintain a state of constant readiness. Whether it is for deployments, disasters or crisis response, they keep the information moving. According to Cmdr. Lisa Johnson, Navy installations command ombudsman program manager, the Ombudsman Program is in place to assist the Navy family member and give them an avenue to receive the support they may need in tough times. "Ombudsmen are not meant to solve problems, but to direct the family member to the people who can help them solve their problems," said Johnson. "Ombudsmen are not meant to "be" the help, but to connect the family member "to" the help." Connecting Navy families to help is what the ombudsmen have been doing for 42 years. They volunteer their personal time to ensure the Navy is ready 100 percent of the time. In celebration of the ombudsmen, Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella Fleet & Family Support Center is hosting an appreciation luncheon at the galley, October 12.
New NATO fuel coupons are now available for purchase at both NEX locations, NAS I Mainstore Customer Service and NAS II Minimart. Refunds for expired coupons will be accepted only at our customer service on NAS I from October 1 through December 31, 2012. Remember, NATO fuel coupons are authorized for use at either ENI or AGIPs ONLY. The closest stations to base that you can use your NATO coupons at are the AGIP station on State Road 192 (Catania-Enna) close to Motta S. Anastasia exit on A-19 Catania-Palermo highway and the AGIP station on State Road 417 Catania-Gela close to NAS II. The stations across from Marinai housing and across from NAS I are not authorized to accept NATO coupons. Members using NATO fuel coupons at any gas station other than ENI or AGIP may be subject to cash settlement for the unauthorized use of NATO fuel coupons. All NATO fuel coupons purchased/issued are traceable to the entitled member and violators risk losing their priveliges. Abuse of NATO fuel coupons compromises the future of the entire program. Don't abuse it.
The Ombudsman Program was introduced to the Navy on September 14, 1970, by Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Elmo Zumwalt as a means to address issues and concerns unique to Navy families. The Navy family ombudsman is a highly-trained volunteer who is able to offer support and guidance to command families and to act as an official liaison between the command and its families. Most ombudsmen are the spouses of active duty or selected reserve members of the command. Ombudsmen are the first step for family members to turn to during a crisis, guiding Navy families to the proper resources they need. That, in turn, helps Sailors with assurance that their families are being taken care of at home. "When command members know that their family has a resource to go to for assistance, they can concentrate on the mission at hand," said Monika French, CNO ombudsman-at-large. "It is the Navy's goal to ensure that every Sailor and family member has access to the services of a command ombudsman." Family readiness is a primary factor to a Sailor's personal and mission rea-

Roasted chestnuts are a traditional Italian treat available from street merchants and at autumn festivals across the island. (Photo by Alberto Lunetta)
Caldarroste: a scrumptious fall tradition During the fall, brown smoker pans are on almost every street corner in Sicily, filling the air with a cloud of smoke and the smell of “caldarroste” (roasted chestnuts). The custom of eating chestnuts dates back to the ancient Roman world when castagne were considered as food for the aristocracy. A famous chef from Imperial Rome prepared them with a pepper sauce and other spices including mint, vinegar, honey and “garum” (sauce made up of fish entrails). During the Middle Ages, chestnuts progressively became the staple food of peasants across Italy because they are easy to find in the woods and full of proteins.
For centuries they helped the population survive during famine. During wars, Medieval and Renaissance European armies used to store chestnut flour because it had a long shelf life and used it to bake bread. In the 18th century an Italian company from Piedmont called Marengo created “Marron Glaces” (glazed chestnuts) by covering the best quality of chestnuts with sugar syrup. These treats were called “marroni” or marrons. Today, chestnuts are cooked in a variety of ways. It's best to eat chestnuts warm when they are freshly roasted. In Italy, it is common to pair chestnuts with wine.

Gaggiolo (AKI)
Turin - Last week, police in Italy arrested a jobless man who posed as an airline pilot, tricking his way into riding in the cockpit of at least one jet, the BBC reported. The unnamed man was stopped at Turin Airport wearing a pilot’s uniform and using forged ID cards, police said. He was charged with endangering air transport security and impersonation. The suspect led police to a garage containing neatly pressed white shirts with epaulets, black trousers and jackets, like those worn by pilots. No motive for the man’s actions was reported immediately. Police have established he sat as “third pilot” in the cockpit of an Air Dolomiti plane which flew from Munich to Turin in April. He did not touch the controls, however. Air Dolomiti is part of the German airline Lufthansa, which gave no details when approached by the Associated Press news agency but insisted he could not have boarded the plane without a ticket. Investigators are now trying to establish if the man flew on other planes. Police had long been investigating the suspect, who had allegedly created a fake identity as a Lufthansa pilot named Andrea Sirlo, complete with a Facebook page which included fake flight attendant friends. They said they had been alerted several months ago after he introduced himself as a captain to a civil aviation lieutenant, who became suspicious because he seemed too young for the job. Police tracked him down from photos on his Facebook profile, in which he is apparently shown posing in uniform and sunglasses in front of planes. Officers approached him in a bar outside Turin Airport's check-in area, dressed in a pilot's uniform with no company logo on it, and sipping coffee. In the garage, officers also found fake IDs and fake flight theory manuals, the Italian news agency Ansa reports. "On at least one occasion in 2012, pretending to be a pilot of a foreign commercial airline, and with a fake name, he succeeded in flying as the third pilot in the cockpit," police said in a statement. The case has echoes of the 2002 Hollywood film Catch Me If You Can, in which Leonardo Di Caprio played Frank Abagnale, a real-life con-man who flew as a fake Pan American pilot in the 1960s.
A man claiming to be completely blind was recently filmed on CCTV cameras reading a magazine, looking right and left before he crossed the road and walking briskly in a local park northern Italy. The 50-year-old man and his wife were reported to Italian police in the northern town of Gaggiolo after it emerged that he was claiming a disability pension, and his wife received a regular payment as a care giver for the blind. The couple had defrauded the Italian state of 80,000 euros and the man, whose sight is not impaired, appeared to have never worked, according to Italian tax police. Police are investigating how the man managed to obtain the disability pension five years ago.
Italy coast guards seize amphoras from diving company, 4th-century AD finds from sunken ship off Sardinia (ANSA)
Cagliari - Italian coast guards seized Roman amphoras dating back to the IV century AD that rightly belong to the state from a motorboat belonging to a diving company stopped in a routine check in waters off the coast of the island of Sardinia. The vessel was stopped last week as part of routine controls carried out by Porto Torres coast guards when the officials found seven prized ancient jars steeped away under berth. An amphora is an ancient jar with two handles and a narrow neck. They were more commonly used to hold water, oil or wine. The amphoras are likely to have been retrieved from the relic of a ship that sunk between the fourth and the fifth century near Sardinia, according to experts from the Sovrintendenza dei beni Archeologici, the state Archeological department. The ageold shipwreck is located in the Cala Reale area of the Asinara island off the coast of Sardinia, according to the specialists. The underwater vessel has often been the focus of studies carried out by underwater archaeologists. Subsequent archaeological relics that by rights belong to the state were discovered in a subsequent search carried out at the headquarters of the diving company. The company in question was not identified by name.

My main duties include but are not limited to: the tracking and storing of all aircraft parts ordered by each work center, keeping track of all items considered to be GIS, to act as a liaison between each customer and the supply system, and to assist SRS and PC in the expeditious ordering and delivery of repair parts. Also, I maintain the AWP locker, DIFM return, Outstanding Material Requirement, and AWP reports and I conduct monthly trainings.
What do you like most about your job? [Providing] customer service. I am very much a people person and talking to people, solving issues, and ensuring that their needs are being met are the most rewarding parts of my job. Aside from that, I love being in charge of my own unit and working independently. What's your favorite thing about living in Sicily? Before, my least favorite thing was driving, mostly because I was terrified. Now, after I’ve conquered manual driving in Sicilia, it has become one of my favorite past times.

Marine marksmanship instructors with Special-Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Africa coach members of Djiboutian Groupe d’Intervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale during a combat marksmanship training event, August 30, 2012. The Marines and sailors of Special-Purpose MAGTF Africa are in Djibouti training with the Djiboutian Groupe d’Intervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale to build on close quarters combat, medical, and sniper skills. Special-Purpose MAGTF Africa is made up of more than 120 Reserve Marines and Sailors from 32 different units. Marines of Special Purpose MAGTFAfrica train with elite Djiboutian forces BY 1ST LT DOMINIC PITRONE Marine Corps Forces Africa DJIBOUTI CITY, Djibouti -- Marines and Sailors from Special-Purpose Marine-Air Ground Task Force Africa began a four-week training evolution with Djibouti’s Group d’Intervention de la Genarmerie Nationale, August 25. The GIGN is Djibouti’s premiere paramilitary crisis response force. They are expected to be able to respond to an emergency situation in Djibouti City in less than 30 minutes. The unit is made up of volunteers from Djiboutian defense and law enforcement forces. After volunteering, members go through a yearlong selection process before being able to join the unit. “There is one year of training that requires the volunteers to maintain high physical and technical abilities,” said Lt. Ilias Aden Abdillahi, the commander of the GIGN. “The first year of training is very difficult. If the trainees don’t pass they are eliminated and not able to be part of the unit.” For four weeks, roughly 60 students from the GIGN will work with Theater Security Cooperation Team-3 of Special-Purpose MAGTF Africa to be familiarized with American weapon systems and American medical skills. “We’re working with the GIGN on combat marksmanship, tactical combat casualty care, close quarters battle, as well as sniper and observer employment. These are skills that keep the GIGN mission capable and ready at a moments notice while defending their country. During our four-week mission we’ll work to add to the skills that the GIGN already possess and to add to their capabilities. At the conclusion of the training package we’ll conduct a comprehensive final exercise that brings all the skills together” said Capt. Daniel Hyman, assistant team leader, SCT-3. This is the first time that these Marines and Sailors
have worked with the GIGN, but the members of the GIGN were familiar with the U.S. Marines and appreciate the Marine Corps culture. “This is our fourth time training with U.S. Marines. We are satisfied to work with Marines for their professionalism. We share many ideas and have a similar culture to the Marines,” said Abdillahi. “We would like to work more with them. We are fortunate as we are the only unit in the Djiboutian National Security Service that gets American training.” The GIGN use a number of different weapon systems, but the training with Special-Purpose MAGTF Africa will familiarize members of the GIGN with the M4 service rifle, M9 service pistol, and M24 sniper weapon system. The Marines are also teaching searching techniques and Marine Corps martial arts. “We are training with our new American weapon systems and this helps us to know how to use these weapons and share the proficiency that the Marines have on these weapons,” added Abdillahi. “These weapons systems help us better integrate with our police forces.” Many of the Marines from the Special-Purpose MAGTF have worked with militaries from partner nations before and that experience provides insight to their work here in Djibouti with the GIGN. “I think that the GIGN share a lot of our values and they’re motivated,” said Staff Sgt. Matthew MacArthur, team chief, SCT-3. “It’s pretty obvious that these guys have worked with Marines before.” Special-Purpose MAGTF Africa is made up of more than120 Reserve Marines and sailors from 32 different units.
