ervice members from Patrol Squadron (VP) 9 and Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force (SPMAGTF) 12.2 (deployed to Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella) participated in an historical cleaning and beautification project on June 23 in Catania, Sicily. The project was part of a community relations (COMREL) event headed up by service members from VP-9 and focused on cleaning an area in the center of Catania that holds the ruins of a Roman amphitheater, thermal baths and road. This was the first time in NAS Sigonella history (base opened in 1959) that U.S. military personnel were involved in cleaning an historic archeological site in Sicily.

"Participating in the clean-up of the Catania Roman amphitheater, in partnership with the Catania Rotary Club, was a memorable event which will resonate with all Sailors of VP-9,” said VP-9 Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Craig Mattingly. “We are honored in having the opportunity to give back to a host nation that has been so generous. I would also like to take just a moment to thank the Catania Department of Archeological Heritage for allowing VP-9 to participate. I look forward to the continued relationship with Dr. Buda of the Archeological Heritage and the wonderful leadership of the Catania Rotary Club." The project was sponsored by the Catania Public Health Department and the Catania Rotary Club

Duomo 150, who adopted the archeological sites. These groups also hosted a press conference earlier in the week which was attended by multiple Italian media outlets covering the event. "This project was aimed at bringing attention to the appreciation of our wonderful archaeological sites and to keep them free from litter. This is as important as keeping our beaches clean," said Dott. Maurizio Catania, a member of the Catania Rotary Club Duomo 150 and an official from the Catania Public Health Department. Service members from VP-9 and SPMAGTF 12.2 hope to participate in another COMREL event such as this one before they finish their scheduled deployment at NAS Sigonella.

“This was a great opportunity for us to say thank you for the hospitality of Catania, Sicily, and Italy,” SPMAGTF 12.2 Public Affairs Officer (PAO), 1st Lt. Dominic Pitrone said. “We hope to continue our involvement around [NAS] Sigonella over the upcoming months.” Photo at right: Despite the summer heat, volunteers worked hard to collect more than 50 bags of trash at two famous Roman archeological sites in Catania.

F

irst of all, I look forward to seeing the entire Sigonella community as we come together this weekend – and on the 4th of July – to celebrate our Country’s 236th birthday, and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Since 1776, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues. This is my third year celebrating the 4th here in Sigonella and our friends at MWR have plans that will ensure it is truly an event to remember. As in past years, it is also my intent to open the Base and invite our Italian friends to celebrate with us. As I have said in the past, our friends here in Sicily serve a vital role in the daily operations of our Base, and the chance to share our American heritage with them is really something special! We received so many questions for June’s Feedback Live that we couldn’t cover them all during the show, so I’ll continue to use the Direct Line column to answer them. Your questions are very important to me, and I encourage you to keep sending them via email. Remember that Feedback Live is a LIVE call in show – if time permits, you can get your question answered on the spot. The next edition of Feedback Live will be July 12 at 6:30 p.m. This will give the Sigonella community the opportunity to spend time with

friends and family during the Independence Day holiday. To call in live on the show, please dial 624-4265 or 095-564265. Why is it that we support Italian Memorial Day as a Naval installation, yet we do nothing for Memorial Day, Veteran's Day, the anniversary of Midway or Pearl Harbor? As we are guests here in Italy, we support the Italian Memorial Day in the same way as we support the American holidays, including a day off and flags flying at half staff. With the exception of Pearl Harbor Day, we have held official events to recognize the holidays you mention; however, at least in the case of Midway, the events were rather sparsely attended. If there are any ideas on how the Base could better support or promote these important holidays, your thoughts would be gratefully accepted. Would it be possible to get new trash receptacles around the Food Court area? The current ones are falling apart and the trash is falling out and blowing around. NEX is currently looking at an entire refresh package for the Food Court that would include the replacement of the outside trash bins. We do not have a date as to when the project will take place; however, there are already plans for some inhouse improvements that will include painting inside the Food Court and repla-

cement of some of the trash bins outside this year. When special events are held at JOX Pub during working hours, such as the Writers on Deck series, is it authorized for active duty to go? The Writers on Deck Series is an all hands event and everyone is invited to attend. Active duty personnel are authorized to wear uniforms in any on-base establishment.

NASSIG Security raises funds in support of National Night Out Service members from Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella security sponsored a car wash and hot dog burn at the Marinai Teen Center parking lot June 23 with donations being made to the annual National Night Out (NNO) event scheduled for August 7. NNO is a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW). Last year's National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, over 37 million people participated in National Night Out 2012. “I wanted to thank everyone in the community for their generous donations,” said NNO Sigonella Event Coordinator, Chief Master-atArms Barion Haywood. “Every penny will go towards making this year’s NNO a huge success.” (U.S. Navy photo by MCSN Cameron Bramham/Released)

Staying cool with Water Wars BY MR1 GARY SPENCE NAS Sigonella Public Affairs

Summer in Sicily can be hot. To help stay cool, Family Fitness hosted Water Wars on June 20. This was a great day for families to play outside and get soaked together! Approximately 30 adults and kids participated in fun water sports which included a water balloon toss and sprinkler relays. There was also a "Most Muscles" game where kids stuffed their oversized t-shirts with water balloons to see who could fit the most water balloons, and a "Biggest Splash" game that had families smashing balloons on the sidewalk to see who could make the biggest splash. The event also included a slip-n-slide (pictured above) and a dunk tank. At the end of the afternoon, participants used up what was left of the water balloons with a big water balloon fight! Families had a great time getting drenched together! With temperatures in the 90’s, families in Marinai

may be looking for ways to stay cooler. Remember, swimming pools are allowed in Marinai as long as the guidelines are followed (located in the Resident Handbook). Those guidelines are: Pools with a length/diameter greater than 10 feet and water fill depth greater than 24 inches are prohibited. Hot tubs of any kind are not permitted. Any lawn damage caused by a pool must be restored prior to vacating quarters to avoid being charged restoration costs. Pools may be kept in front yards or under the carport, provided there is adult supervision. As a safety precaution, empty unattended pools after each use. Pools may be kept in back yards and may remain filled and unattended if they are secured in your fenced area. However you choose to ward off the heat, also keep in mind the importance of staying hydrated and wearing sunscreen!

Four tips to help you stretch your vacation dollar The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society provides need based financial assistance and other services to members of the Naval Services of the United States, and their eligible family members and survivors. Summer vacation in Sigonella usually means a trip back to the States to catch up with family and friends. We understand how expensive a trip can get and even though you may set a budget, sticking to it can be tough. Often times when people set a vacation budget they include airfare, hotels and transportation costs but leave out daily expenditures that can really add up. So, once your itinerary is set, remember these four tips to help stretch your vacation dollar.

1 2

Avoid foreign transaction fees. Make charges to a no-fee credit card or use a preloaded Travelex Cash Passport. You can save $10— $30 on every $1000 you spend. Use free Wi-Fi. Avoid the high cost of being connected via your smart phone by only checking your email or Facebook in Wi-Fi zones, especially

when travelling overseas. You can save hundreds of dollars worth of data charges.

3

Research your stay and save on meals.

4

Sightsee for free or at a discounted rate.

Lots of hotels offer free breakfast as part of your stay. That could easily save you $40 on breakfast alone. Restaurant.com or other discount sites such as Groupon offer discount certificates for restaurants. Working the clock by opting for a heavier meal at lunch or partaking in early evening or late–night happy hours can also help you save big! Plan your schedule around free museum days, inquire about military discounts or last-minute discount tickets for performances and explore free parks and other no- to low-cost attractions. Have a great summer!! Source: Bankrate.com

On June 29, the community of Palazzolo Acreide honors Saint Paul, the city’s beloved patron saint with a not-to-be-missed religious festival featuring processions, music shows, arts and crafts and a breathtaking fireworks show. (Photo by Angelo Grimaldi)

Saint Paul Festival in Palazzolo Acreide Devotion and folklore will come alive in Palazzolo Acreide tonight as rejoicing crowds will take to the streets for the traditional Festa di San Paolo (Saint Paul Feast). Palazzolo, a pearl of the Sicilian Baroque, is a small town nestled among the hills of the Siracusa province. Every year on June 28 and 29, thousands of pilgrims gather at the church of San Paolo to honor their beloved celestial patron. Saint Paolo is depicted as a bearded man holding a sword pointing upward and a book from which a snake hangs downwards. He is considered as protector from snake bites and scorpion and tarantula stings. According to tradition, Saint Paul was bitten by a viper, but the venom had no effect on him because of his supernatural powers. “San Paulu, maccia d'addauru, spina puncenti, nun muzzicari a mia e mancu a la genti” (Saint Paul, laurel tree, stinging thorn, don’t bite neither me nor other people). This invocation, which was said to protect against those deadly bites, was given to devotees in return for offerings to Saint Paul by the “Ciarauli” who, according to legend, were shamans with supernatural healing powers. Typically born on the night between Jan. 24 and 25 (the night of Saint Paul’s conversion), they were believed to heal the poisonous bites with saliva and prayers. According to popular credulity, Ciarauli had also physical birthmarks on their body (bumps with tarantula or snake shapes under their tongue or on their arms) which would “prove” their predestinated supernatural calling. Tradition holds that they attended Saint Paul festivals to collect the “dedicated gifts” which devotees had promised to give to Saint Paul to thank him for a miracle. Ciarauli were skilled in snake handling techniques

which they used to impress pilgrims. Saint Paul is also invoked for good crops and for the healing of children affected by hernias. During the festival, devotees also buy the traditional "Cudduri di San Paulu," (elaborate votive ring-shaped bread) which is offered to relatives and friends for good luck. The Saint Paul festival, which is also celebrated in several neighboring towns such as Buccheri, Buscemi, Ferla, Cassaro, Giarratana, Monterosso, Canicattini and Solarino, is the main religious event in Palazzolo. Over the centuries, Saint Paul became more popular than Saint Sebastian, the other protector who is indeed considered as a “minor” patron saint and is celebrated on Aug. 10 just by one town’s district. Supporters of Saint Paul are called “Sampaulari” while the ones upholding Saint Sebastian are named “Sammastianari.” Today's Festival Highlights: Friday, June 29: Blessing of animals and bread (9 a.m.); Solemn Holy Mass (10:30 a.m.); “Sciuta” (The float with the decorated statue of Saint Paul placed on top is carried in procession by devotees screaming “Viva San Paulu patronu!” (Long live Saint Paul the patron!) throughout the town historic center among firecrackers, colored ribbons called “Nzareddi”; Blessing of the babies is also performed at 1 p.m.; Evening procession (8 p.m.); Musical show (10 p.m.) featuring Sicilian dub, reggae, ska, drum and bass and ethnic music band's "Anzikatanza" ; Spectacular grand finale with fireworks (midnight). Mona Lisa tomb hunt set to start again; experts Leonardo's birthplace to reopen; confident of finding body of Leonardo's sitter Renaissance man born in Anchiano, (ANSA) - Florence - The hunt for the tomb and possible remains of the model for Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa in a former Florence convent is set to start again after the necessary funds were drummed up. If enough is discovered, experts may be able to reconstruct the woman's face and find out more about that famous smile. "Now we have the money to go ahead and the hunt will begin again on May 29," said Florence Provincial Councilor Stefano Giorgetti. "I'm confident we're going to find something," said Silvano Vinceti, an art historian who has found the bones of Caravaggio and reconstructed the faces of other artists based on their skulls. Vinceti, now head of the National Committee for the Enhancement of Historical, Cultural and Environmental Heritage, stressed that "this is a search that is justified by historical documents, starting with (pioneering art historian Giorgio) Vasari". He said the clincher was the recent discovery in Germany of a document written in Latin by Leonardo's scribe which said a woman called Lisa had been the model for the masterpiece now housed in the Louvre. Vinceti and his team have been using a 'georadar' device to scan underneath the old convent of St. Ursula to find the DNA of Lisa Gherardini Del Giocondo and compare it with that of two her children buried in Florence's Santissima Annunziata church. Leonardo sleuth Giuseppe Pallanti published a book in 2007 arguing the former convent "must be" the last resting place of La Gioconda, as the Italians call the Mona Lisa because of the surname of her husband, del Giocondo. Pallanti said he was "sure she's down there". He said his research has wiped away all doubt about the identity of La Gioconda, who is believed to have joined the Ursuline nuns in old age. "It was her, Lisa, the wife of the merchant Francesco del Giocondo, and she lived right opposite Leonardo in Via Ghibellina," Pallanti said. Last year's search, which went on from April until funds ran out

in December, "only discovered bones that were about 200 years older than Lisa's would be," Vinceti said. As well as the key DNA match, carbon-dating and other tests will also be carried out by the University of Bologna. Most modern scholars have now agreed with Pallanti that the Mona Lisa sitter was Lisa del Giocondo, who, according to the Italian researcher became a nun after her husband's death and died in the convent on July 15, 1542 at age 63. The couple were married in 1495 when the bride was 16 and the groom 35. It has frequently been suggested that del Giocondo commissioned Leonardo to paint his Mona Lisa (mona is the standard Italian contraction for madonna, or "my lady,") to mark his wife's pregnancy or the recent birth of their second child in December 1502. Although pregnancy or childbirth have been put forward in the past as explanations for Mona Lisa's cryptic smile, other theories have not been lacking - some less plausible than others. Some have argued that the painting is a self-portrait of the artist, or one of his favorite male lovers in disguise, citing the fact that Da Vinci never actually relinquished the painting and kept it with him up until his death in Amboise, France in 1519. The most curious theories have been provided by medical experts-cum-art lovers. One group of medical researchers has maintained that the sitter's mouth is so firmly shut because she was undergoing mercury treatment for syphilis which turned her teeth black. An American dentist has claimed that the tight-lipped expression was typical of people who have lost their front teeth, while a Danish doctor was convinced she suffered from congenital palsy which affected the left side of her face and this is why her hands are overly large. A French surgeon has also put forth his view that she was semiparalyzed, perhaps as the result of a stroke, and that this explained why one hand looks relaxed and the other tense. Leading American feminist Camille Paglia simply concluded that the cool, appraising smile showed that "what Mona Lisa is ultimately saying is that males are unnecessary".

(ANSA) - Anchiano - The birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci is set to reopen Friday after being restored. Leonardo, the illegitimate son of a wealthy notary and a peasant, was born April 15, 1452 in a country estate in Anchiano, a Tuscan town known for its picturesque olive trees and a medieval charm that has hardly changed since his birth. From Saturday onward, the dwelling will resume regular visiting hours, which came to a halt during a 1.2 million euro overhaul and modernization. One notable new feature is a multimedia presentation in which a hologram of the Tuscan master recounts stories from his life. Admission will be free Saturday and Sunday, after which entry will cost 2-euro. Visitors can purchase an 8-euro package to also enter the Leonardo museum in neighboring Vinci, home of the artist's father.

Vatican accuses journalists of 'playing Dan Brown'; Pope has spoken of calumny, says Bertone (ANSA) - Vatican City - Vatican Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone has blasted journalists for allegedly lying and playing at being Dan Brown in their reporting of the leaking of confidential Church documents to the media. "Many journalists play at imitating Dan Brown," Bertone told Catholic weekly Famiglia Cristiana referring to the author of bestsellers such as “The Da Vinci Code” and “Angels and Demons.” "They keep inventing tales and peddling legends". There have been a number of reports of conspiracies inside the Vatican after the leaking of sensitive Church documents to the Italian press earlier this year created the so-called Vatileaks scandal. Pope Benedict's butler, Paolo Gabriele, was arrested May 25 for alleged involvement. According to some theories, the documents were leaked by a group of people, including senior clergymen, who are unhappy about the way Bertone is managing Church affairs. Bertone said that in recent months the Vatican had been victim of "foul play" and "lies" and that Pope Benedict XVI had "spoken of calumny.” The secretary of state added that "the church is united around the pope". The leaked documents included letters to the pope and Bertone from the Holy See's ambassador in Washington, Carlo Maria Vigano', who was the deputy governor of Vatican City when they were written. The letters contained allegations of corruption in the management of Vatican City.

One of the leading cities during the golden age of ancient Greece, Agrigento was also under control at points in time by the Romans, the Ostrogoth Kingdom, and the Normans. With a rich history of settlement by ancient societies, Agrigento has much for the eye to see. Aside from Valle dei Templi, the city itself is home to several medieval and baroque style buildings, diverse restaurants and numerous shops. (Photo by Emily Kellen)

BY JAMIE ANDREWS Morale, Welfare and Recreation, Sigonella

Sigonella’s premiere library is encouraging kids to keep reading over the long break with the “Reading is so Delicious” summer reading program! The fun begins July 3 and runs through August 21. “Reading is so Delicious” is a DOD sponsored program designed to increase an appetite for reading. Ann Forrest is a parent volunteer for this year’s program. She says there are many reasons why summer reading is important. “If kids don’t read during the summer their reading won’t be as strong as it was before the break,” she says, “reading will also expand their vocabularies and make them more interesting people.” Another goal is to keep children from spending the summer looking at screens, watching videos on youtube.com and playing video games. Ann says the time off is a great opportunity to read for pleasure, since there isn’t much time for it during the school year. Participation in “Reading is so Delicious” is simple! There are two ways to log your reading. Listing books you’ve read is one way, but children who aren’t reading yet

can still take part by logging time spent reading with a parent. Kids can check out books or just read at the library. There will also be a “Reading Nook” at the commissary on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. until noon starting July 3, where kids can hang out and read or enjoy listening to a volunteer read while parents do their shopping. Library events include a “Stuffed-Animal Sleepover” party July 20, and a “Late Night at the Library” parents’ night out on August 10. Kids are encouraged to read everywhere they go during the summer, too. Parents can submit photos of their kids reading in unusual places to win prizes for the most original. Children of all ages can enjoy the “Reading is so Delicious” program. Prizes will be awarded at the closing ceremony on August 25, but as all readers know, reading is its own reward! For more information on “Reading is so Delicious,” to download reading logs or to volunteer, visit the library page at sigmwr.com or email sigonella.reads@gmail.com.

Did you know? Both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on Independence Day, July 4, 1826. In 1941, Congress declared 4th of July a federal legal holiday. It is one of the few federal holidays that have not been moved to the nearest Friday or Monday. Only one place in the whole country has the word patriot in its name— Patriot, IN. The first real July 4th party was held at the White House in 1801.

Tips for barbecuing safely BY MUSUMECI ALFIO NAS Sigonella Fire Department

Having a BBQ can be a fun and entertaining but it is important to exercise caution and observe a few safety tips. Always keep your BBQ clean and free of grease buildup. If your BBQ pit is run on gas, clean the venturi tubes regularly because insects love to build nests in the tubes. Never start a gas grill with the lid closed. Propane or natural gas can accumulate inside, and then, when ignited, could blow the lid off. Also, don't lean over the top of a grill as you're lighting it. If you have longer hair, make sure that it is securely tied back before you attempt to light the grill. Never wear loose clothing because they might catch fire if the flames flare up unexpectedly. If your clothes do catch on fire: stop, drop, and roll. This will help smother the flames. Never use a flammable liquid other than barbecue starter fluid to start your grill or smoker. Gasoline, paint thinner and other petroleum products are not designed to start grills. They burn explosively, and release toxins that may taint your food and could cause you serious injury. When using starter fluid, place the container well away from the grill before attempting to light it. Always

make sure you do not spill any of the fluid on your clothes, surrounding grass, or deck. Be sure that the area is clear of leaves, dry grass, and other flammable materials. Never store liquid or pressurized fuels inside your home. Propane, gasoline, and any other flammable liquids and gases should be stored in regulation containers away from potential sources of flame such as furnaces, water heaters, and fireplaces. Have a multipurpose fire extinguisher available next to your grill and remember P.A.S.S. - pull, aim, squeeze, and sweep. Contact NAS Sigonella fire dept. or fire prevention office at 6240564/0534/5200/5201 and ask what type of multipurpose fire extinguisher would be best for you. Always shut off the valve to propane tanks when not in use. Never leave a hot grill unattended. Always have someone nearby to keep children and pets at a safe distance. Never add liquid starter to hot or even warm coals. If your coals are going out, open all the vents then fan the coals with a newspaper. Always wear an insulated fire retardant BBQ mitt and use long handled tools and tongs designed for use with a BBQ.

Fourth of July safety BY SIGONELLA SAFETY OFFICE

On Wednesday, July 4th, we celebrate the founding of our country, our freedom and independence. There will be gatherings, barbeques, parties. Prior to the start of celebrations, do take time to reflect upon the freedoms that every American enjoys and honor the sacrifices of those who have defended and continue to defend freedom. OR applies to all situations, at work and at home. I cannot emphasizes enough the importance of having a plan to mitigate. Your plan must address risks associated with whatever activity you are doing and it must have controls in place to reduce each risk. Here are just a few items to think about. ALCOHOL:Only those that are of legal age are allowed to consume alcohol. Alcohol consumption and driving shall not be

mixed. Every Sigonellan who will be consuming alcohol SIMPLY MUST have a designated driver and a back-up plan. Remember, your chain of command is always part of your plan. FIRE SAFETY: Always barbeque in an open area. Never leave an open flame unattended. Never pour lighter fluid on lit briquettes. RECREATION: Maintain situational awareness when at beaches and while participating in water sports. It is recommended that Single Sigonellans have a liberty buddy while off base. Where Sunscreen! Throughout this holiday liberty, it's imperative that all individuals do their part to avoid preventable accidents. This begins with personal responsibility, discipline, and integrity. Every tenant command,

every department, every division, and every section must work as a team and support each other to ensure that every plan is successful in preventing any liberty incidents this holiday and every day. Be SAFE and have an enjoyable holiday.
