NASSIG advances 47 Sailors to next pay grade BY JACKIE TREMBATH NAS Sigonella Public Affairs

Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella individually recognized and advanced 46 Sailors to the next paygrade in a frocking ceremony November 28, outside of the Executive Administration building on NAS II.  "Preparation, organization and discipline are essential in achieving a new rank," said Chief John Dooney,  career  information  program  manager. "Opportunity to advance depends on current and predicted future vacancies within a Sailor's rating. It also depends upon how well a Sailor performs, what they have learned from their rating experiences, and their rating knowledge." Each Sailor was presented a certificate and congratulated by NAS Sigonella Commanding Officer Capt. Scott Butler. According to Dooney, one competitive advantage for Sailors is the ongoing pursuit for professional development.  The  Navy  continues  to  implement  or change current force shaping tools including Perform to Serve (PTS) and High Year Tenure policy to ensure

enlisted communities maintain vibrant career progression and advancement opportunity.  The Navy selects Sailors to higher ranks based on their biannual advancement exam results and prior Navy performance and achievements.  Career Development Boards (CDBs) are conducted before and after exams and concentrate on what Sailors need to work on for their continued development and preparation for the advancement cycle providing them with the proper tools to plan and study effectively.  The most important listing of available resources is the bibliography (BIB) for advancement. BIBS list all the references used by test writers when they developed the test questions for the exam.  "After all reference materials are gathered, Sailors need to establish a plan to study and allocate enough time to adequately prepare for the exam," said Dooney. "On time advancement, staying out of trouble, and receiving positive evaluations are part of the recipe for a successful career."

NOVEMBER

I hope that everyone had a Thanksgiving  full  of  great  food  and  shopping.  I’m  sure  part  of  everyone’s weekend was spent taking advantage of all the sales going on at the Navy Exchange's Navy Blue Friday event and all of the specials that will be available online through the end of the year. More importantly, I hope that everyone took the opportunity to enjoy plenty of quality time with family and friends whether  you  stayed  in  Sicily,  spent Thanksgiving in Tuscany with MWR and ITT, or visited family back home in the U.S. While Thanksgiving is the day that is set aside to remind us of all that we are thankful for, that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t be thankful for those things each and every day of the year.  The  passing  of  one  holiday  leads into the preparation for another. Evidence can always be seen throughout the housing areas as families get into the spirit by putting up lights and other decorations. I look forward to all the upcoming holiday events and am excited  about  what  our  Morale,  Welfare, and Recreation Department has planned to kick off the Christmas season.

Be  sure  to  come  out  tomorrow  to Midtown for the tree lighting ceremony tonight at 6 p.m., Winter Wonderland tomorrow  at  the  NAS  I  gym  from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. and the U.S. Naval Forces  Europe  Band  holiday  concert  at Knights Hall, Sunday at 7 p.m.  While  you  are  enjoying  the  command holiday parties and all the other fun events that this season brings, make sure you have a plan not only that night but  the  next  morning.  Many  of  our DUIs are the following morning. Allow your body time to recover before driving. NEVER drink and drive and always have a plan. I am asking everyone to be responsible and take care of each other. The holidays are a reason to celebrate and have fun but make sure you do so within reason and with a reliable and fully worked out plan in place. During the holiday season and leave periods, please keep safety as a primary focus  to  help  eliminate  unnecessary risks and potential hazards. Help your Shipmates. Remember, when you are out in town and on travel, you are an Ambassador for the base, the Navy, and the United States. I couldn’t be prouder to serve with a greater group of patriots. I pray that each of us has a blessed and safe holiday season. As my mom would say, “Do something nice just because. You just never know what a difference you could be making”.  Finally, this time of year also brings a new season of sports to our community. It’s time for Jaguar basketball and wrestling teams to put all the off season preparation to work. Both teams have worked really hard to represent Sigonella and I encourage everyone to come out and support our student athletes. Hooyah Jaguars! Happy  Holidays  and  Stay  Safe, Sigonella!

Around NAS Sigonella ...

Traditional Thanksgiving meal served Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella celebrated Thanksgiving with a traditional meal at Galley Ristorante Bella Etna on November 22. Making the meal even more special, NAS Sigonella Executive Officer Cmdr. Eric Vosler and Command Master Chief David Gramham were among those who served food to hungry patrons which included single Sailors and ITAF civilian and military personnel. Italian journalist, Carmen Greco partook in the meal and wrote about it for La Sicilia, describing the it as a“mouthwatering and rich menu” and praising the Italian and American galley staff for their professionalism. Long-time Chicago Sun-Times columnist Irv Kupcinet once famously wrote – and I’m paraphrasing here – an optimist is someone who starts a new diet during Thanksgiving. Seems there are no optimists at U.S. Naval Hospital Sigonella. As part of its pre-Thanksgiving festivities, the hospital hosted a celebration of both the upcoming holiday and American Indian Heritage Month on November 20. And much food was involved.  “Since it was a holiday party, we decided to combine both the Thanksgiving celebration and the American Indian Heritage Month celebration,” said Lt. Cmdr. James Zmijski, who helped to organize the event. “The two work well together and go hand-in-hand. It fit together nicely.” Guests at the event were greeted by hospital Commanding Officer, Capt. Patricia McDonald, who spoke about the importance of American Indians in our past and in our future. Zmijski also hosted a few trivia questions based on posters that were displayed throughout the hospital recently

pertaining  to  the  heritage  of  American  Indians.  And,  of course, there was the food. All of this helped bring to light the importance of American Indians, not only their history but their role in the Navy. “The American Indians are a big part of our nation but such a small part of our Navy,” Zmijski said. “But they still play a prominent role.” This event helped to shine a light on people such as Joseph James Clark, the first American Indian graduate of the Naval Academy to achieve the full rank of Admiral, and Tom Oxendine, the first American Indian to fly for the Navy. “It’s interesting to see the importance that American Indians have played in the Navy,” said HM3 Sherika Billett, an attendee at the event. “It’s easy to take for granted what they have done, but events like this help us to remember.” Zmijski hopes this will be the first of an annual event for the hospital and that means a lot more food in the future. And that’s something to be optimistic about.

Sailors and community members from NAVSUP FLC Sigonella and Aviation Support Division (ASD) shared a day of thanks during a community relations (COMREL) project at Casa famiglia "Accoglienza Nazareth,"  a  foster  home  and  welcoming  center  for  single  mothers  in Macchia di Giarre on November 20. Sailors and community members prepared and served a traditional American Thanksgiving meal with more than 30 women and children in the center and handed out gifts, bringing smiles to many faces. "The mothers and their children look forward to the Americans coming and giving a moment of joy and happiness," said Sister Teresina, director. "This helps the kids see and learn other cultures." For the Sailors and community members, it is a part of the cultural experience. "It is very important that we get involved within the community. It's part of our duty while we live and work here," said Lt. Rudy Mason, site director for NAVSUP FLC Sigonella. "Today we wanted to share a typical Thanksgiving meal and share an important holiday season with our friends here in Giarre."

If the saying, “Non c’è Natale senza presepe” (there's no Christmas without Nativity scenes) is true, then a visit to Caltagirone is a must. Caltagirone, one of Sicily’s ceramic art and craft hubs, boasts an incredible artistic level  of  Nativity  scenes.  Every  “Presepe”  is  a  unique piece of art; craftsmen pay attention even to the smallest details. Every year, dozen of Sicilian and international Nativity scenes are on display inside the historic center aristocratic palaces.  Nativity scenes were introduced in Caltagirone in the 17th century thanks to the unparalleled skills of two local craftsmen named Vaccaro and Bongiovanni. Tradition holds that kids were so excited about Christmas that they would collect money every month to buy clay figurines at the “Pasturari,” (craftsmen specialized in shepherds’  figurines)  workshops  or  markets  during Christmas time. Today, unfortunately, there are no traces left of that artwork because of a violent earthquake that hit the entire Catania province in 1693. We only know  through  historic  chronicles  that  convents  and churches were the first to commission figurines.  The early miniature Nativity scenes, which imitated the ones portrayed on religious paintings, were very simple and only depicted the holy family. Through the centuries, Caltagirone craftsmen perfected their techniques and their Nativity scenes became more elaborate. New figurines portraying minor characters like the bag-piper, the ricotta cheese maker, the sleeping shepherd, angels, animals and ordinary daily life scenes such as people arguing, were added in the backdrop.  In the 18th century, convents and wealthy families used to compete for the best presepe as they commissioned the better skilled sculptors of the time to shape and assemble richly decorated Nativity sets. Historic chronicles also say aristocratic families used to display Nativity scenes that they would set up at their homes inviting both friends and even people just passing by to “judge” their artistic value.  Today, craftsmen at Caltagirone’s workshops keep this ancient tradition alive.  While you are in Caltagirone take a close look to the imposing “Scala S. Maria del Monte,” the “heart” of the town. It is a monumental staircase that is lit during the patron saint festival and decorated with flowers during special holidays.

Marinai community hosts 2nd Annual Turkey Football Game BY JACKIE TREMBATH NAS Sigonella Public Affairs

Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella children in the Marinai community played their own version of the traditional Thanksgiving Day NFL football game on November 23. "Since the age of 3, my son has always loved football," said Senior Chief Diego Reyes. "When I wasn't deployed and able to spend Thanksgiving with my family, my son and I would go out in our yard and play. It became our tradition." Last year, Reyes and his son invited the neighborhood children to participate and another tradition was born. When Thanksgiving Day arrived, all the children donned their football jerseys and hit the field. Parents

also got involved, acting as coaches, referees, cheerleaders and fans rooting on the teams and adult all-time quarterback(s). "It was an enjoyable day for the children of Marinai," said Reyes, who served as a referee. "For many weeks the buzz around the neighborhood was this upcoming football game." Both teams were evenly matched, and the final score ended in a tie - 28-28.  "There was no losing team," said Reyes. "Just children, muddy from top to bottom, and a lot of smiles from the kids and the parents. It was a great day for football in Marinai, and a day to be thankful!"
