Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella’s Operations Department and Public Works Department teamed up with the Italian Air Force Public Works Department to conduct renovations and maintenance to the base’s airfield. The renovation project began in February of 2010 with a discussion phase of what was needed to improve the standards and safety of the flight line. “The runway maintenance upkeep is very necessary. If it isn’t upgraded or improved upon, it degrades the overall usage or makes it completely unusable,” said Aviation Electronics Technician 1st Class Scott Guidry, NAS Sigonella flight line manager. “This impacts the Navy as a whole on a lot of levels. Without these renovations, aircraft wouldn’t be able to refuel or conduct any missions through here.” The flight line project consists of repairing the take-off and
landing strip, runway painting, updating the runway and ramp lighting, concrete repairs and installing new lighted signs along with other numerous projects. “Sigonella has been around for quite a while now,” said Lt. Cmdr. Tor Berg, NAS Sigonella assistant operations officer. “The runway and taxi ways were in need of some repairs in order to continue to support operations.” During Operation Odyssey Dawn and Operation Unified Protector in 2011, the increased traffic was the one of the reasons for wear and tear to the runway facilities. “From a safety and operations standpoint, this is absolutely necessary,” said Berg. “It will definitely have a huge safety impact on pilots being able to identify the runway to maneuvering around the airfield.” With the help of their Italian counterparts and contractors,

the Sigonella Operations and Public Works Department were able to repair and increase the standards to meet the International Civil Air Organization’s regulations. “We have been working very closely with the Italian Air Force and the Italian contractors,” said Guidry. “It’s been going pretty well. The language barrier has been a little bit of a challenge, but it’s been a great experience to work with them.” The target date for the completion of all the renovations is anticipated near the end of October 2012. “If we had not done the runway repairs, at some point the condition of the runway would fall below the minimum standards that are set for the logistics aircraft to operate,” added Berg. “Addressing all these repairs allows us to stay the Hub of the Mediterranean.”

NAS Sigonella Executive Officer, Cmdr. Eric Vosler As I watched the Row and Swim and Splash and Dash at the pool this weekend, it reminded me that the fall Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) is right around the corner and everyone should be fine tuning their workouts as the scheduled day approaches. Seeing the kids out swimming and running was good reminders that exercise is not only fun but should be a part of everyone’s routines and not just something that is thought about twice a year during the PFA. The advantages to incorporating regular exercise into your weekly routine extend beyond just passing the PFA, and can include some surprising benefits. According to the Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center (NMCPHC), individuals who exercise regularly are less likely to develop certain diseases including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Lowering the risk for these diseases translates to lowering your future health care costs, insurance costs and improving and extending your life. Furthermore, there are some immediate advantages that make it worth the extra effort each day. Individuals who exercise regularly are more likely to maintain a healthy body weight, increase energy levels, decrease fatigue, improve mood, im-
prove ability to focus and concentrate, and ultimately reduce and counter the effects of stress on the body. MWR has excellent facilities on NAS I and NAS II to make sure everyone has access to the proper equipment needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It takes a little motivation from the Sigonella community to get involved and STAY involved throughout the year. From group fitness classes, treadmills, ellipticals, and weights to lap swimming at the aquatic center, the facilities are here for you and your family. Utilizing the available fitness programs and equipment is an excellent way to lower your stress level and improve your quality of life. If you exercise outside remember to always consider how the temperature will affect your body and your performance. Stay hydrated and pay attention to the flag conditions that are indicated around base. The best times to exercise are in green and yellow flag conditions. Only individuals who have been on station greater than 12 weeks and are fully acclimated to the temperature should consider exercising during red flag conditions and no one should be exercising during black flag conditions. Following these guidelines
will limit your risk to heat exhaustion and heat stroke and allow you to get the most out of your workout. Most importantly, eating right and regular exercise keeps you healthy. If you are maintaining healthy habits, I should hear the last lines in the 1983 movie Trading Places with Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy throughout the base: “Looking good, Sigonella! Feeling good, XO!”

Dark Knight premieres to sold out crowd Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella's community members attended the base premiere of Director Christopher Nolan's final chapter to his adaption of the DC Comics character, Batman, 'The Dark Knight Rises’. The movie has raked in more than $250 million since opening in New York City July 16. Logistics Specialist Seaman and Batman fanatic Kristan Marks said she stood in line at Take Five two days prior to the premiere for nearly an hour to get tickets for herself and friends. "It was awesome," Marks said enthusiastically. "I love how Christopher [Nolan] brought everything together at the end. Plus you can never go wrong with any movie Morgan Freeman is in." Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) brought Mike Domitrz, founder of the Date Safe Project, to visit service members at Midtown 2 Theaters on Naval Air Station(NAS) Sigonella, July 30. The Date Safe Project is an organization that works with universities, schools and the U.S. Military around the world. It provides real solutions to tough conversations on dating, sexual decision making and sexual assault. The Date Safe Project applies to all age ranges, single or married. “This event was beneficial, because it proactively teaches the how-to of fun intimacy and sexual decision making so that the negative scary situations occur less often," says Domitrz. He hopes service members take away three main things: learn how to ask verbally for what they want and don't want sexually, be able to intervene when they see a dangerous situation and support survivors in a positive manner. Sunscreen tips As you know, it is important to use sun block during the hot summer months. However, you may have questions on what type of sunblock to purchase or when you should apply sunblock on your children. Here are a few tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Sunscreen can help protect the skin from sunburn and some skin cancers, but only if used correctly. Keep in mind that sunscreen should be used for sun protection, not as a reason to stay in the sun longer. How to Pick Sunscreen •Use a sunscreen that says “broad-spectrum” on the label - that means it will screen out both UVB and UVA rays. •Use a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 15. The higher the SPF, the more UVB protection the sunscreen has. •For sensitive areas of the body, such as the nose, cheeks, tops of the ears, and the shoulders, choose a sunscreen or sunblock with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. While these products usually stay visible on the skin even after you rub them in, some now come in fun colors that kids enjoy. Look for the new UVA “star” rating system on the label. (One star is low UVA protection. Two stars is medium protection. Three stars is high protection. Four stars is the highest UVA protection available in an over-the-counter sunscreen product. ) What’s the best way to protect my child in the sun? Follow these simple rules to protect your family from sunburns now and from skin cancer later in life. Keep babies younger than 6 months out of direct sunlight. Find shade under a tree or the stroller canopy. When possible, dress yourself and your kids in cool, comfortable clothing that covers the body, like lightweight cotton pants, long-sleeved shirts, and hats. Select clothes made with a tight weave - they protect better than clothes with a looser weave. If you’re not sure how tight a fabric’s weave is, hold it up to see how much light shines through. The less light, the better. Wear a hat or cap with a brim that faces forward to shield the face. Limit your sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m, when UV rays are strongest. Wear sunglasses with at least 99% UV protection (look for child-sized sunglasses with UV protection for your child).
Set a good example. You can be the best teacher by practicing sun protection yourself. Teach all members of your family how to protect their skin and eyes. Sunscreen for Babies Use a sunscreen that says “broad-spectrum” on the label - that means it will screen out UVB and UVA rays. Use a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 15. The higher the SPF, the more UVB protection the sunscreen has. For sensitive areas of the body, such as the nose, cheeks, tops of the ears, and the shoulders, choose a sunscreen or sunblock with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. While these products usually stay visible on the skin even after you rub them in, some now come in fun colors that kids enjoy. For babies younger than 6 months. Use sunscreen on small areas of the body, such as the face and the backs of the hands, if protective clothing and shade are unavailable. For babies older than 6 months. Apply to all areas of the body, but be careful around the eyes. If your baby rubs sunscreen into her eyes, wipe the eyes and hands clean with a damp cloth. If the sunscreen irritates her skin, try a different brand or try a sunscreen stick or sunscreen or sunblock with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. If a rash develops, talk with your child’s doctor. How to apply sunscreen Use enough sunscreen to cover all exposed areas, especially the face, nose, ears, feet, and hands and even the backs of the knees. Rub it in well. Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors to give time for the sunscreen to bind and absorb into to the skin. Use sunscreen any time you or your child might sunburn. Remember that you can get sunburn even on cloudy days. Also, UV rays can bounce back from water, sand, snow, and concrete so make sure you’re protected. Reapply sunscreen every two hours. Sunscreen wears off after swimming, sweating, or just from soaking into the skin. For more information, see the New Parent Support team at the FFSC, NAS1, Bldg 319 or call 624-4291. Catania Municipal Police have stepped up patrols in the fish market after a necklace snatching left a woman injured on Tuesday. The incident occurred at 11 a.m. in piazza Pardo when the victim, a 40-yearold tourist from Northern Italy, got her gold necklace snatched and was violently pushed to the ground by three thieves. Investigators told media they can find no witnesses among fishmongers to the necklace-snatching. The victim suffered a minor neck injury. "I will never come back to Catania," the victim told local media last Tuesday. Consumers Association Codacons complained that Catania is an unsafe city and police aren’t doing anything about it. Codacons urged police and city leaders to start deploying more police officers out in the streets to protect residents and tourists, especially the ones who disembark cruise ships to tour the city. "It was an isolated incident, it doesn't happen very often," said one of the fishmongers. A Catania Municipal Police spokesman told media that they plan to increase the number of uncover officers patrol to target thieves at city markets’ areas.
Venice hotels ask highest price, Palermo lowest (ANSA) -
Hotels in Venice, one of Italy's top tourist destinations, have jacked up prices and are now the most expensive in the entire country, tourist portal Business Price Radar said in a report on Tuesday. In respect to 2011, prices have gone up 9.12%, meaning that a room costs 147 euros a night on the average. In contrast, Rome prices have dropped by 5% in respect to 2011, bringing the bill down to 109 euros per night. For budget-wary travelers, the Sicilian city of Palermo beats them all with an average of 76 euros per night. Italian students to pay up to double tuition if behind, spending review goes after bad grades (ANSA) –
Italian university students falling behind in their coursework will pay up to double their tuition fees, according to an amendment to the government spending review. The amendment, which was approved by the Senate budget committee Friday, would be applied most heavily to students from wealthier families. Students with family incomes lower than 90,000 euros would pay a 25% tuition penalty. The measure is part of the government's hotly contested plans to save 26 billion euros over the next three years after conducting a review of public spending.

NAS Sigonella Military Working Dogs Division train with local Italians BY MCSN CAMERON BRAMHAM NAS Sigonella Public Affairs

he Military Working Dog (MWD) Division of Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella’s Security Department welcomed Italian Polizia, Carabinieri and Guardia Di Finanza on base, July 31, to participate in a joint task force training exercise in drug, explosives and patrol tactics for each department's K-9 unit. The NAS Sigonella MWD Division, which is the largest of its kind in the Mediterranean, holds joint task force training events with Italian departments to learn new techniques and build better friendships. "It builds great morale and great camaraderie not only for just the K-9 divisions but for the Italian people and the American people overall," MWD Kennel Supervisor, Master-at-Arms 1st Class Matthew Dupont said. "There are a million and one ways to train a dog, so it's
really neat to come out to see how the Polizia train their dogs compared to how the Carabinieri train their dogs, compared to how we train our dogs." Dupont also believes it's great for NAS Sigonella dog handlers to witness different training methods firsthand, and building a better relationship with Italian nationals is a huge bonus. "It gets those guys to see a lot of scales of different levels and variations of training," Dupont said. "It's really nice to see our guys intermesh and mingle with all the different methods of training. We need to utilize both assets and training is really helpful for us." Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Andrea McAnally trained with two K-9 dogs (Nathan and Zizi) during the exercise and agrees with Dupont about how much the dog handlers from the NAS Sigonella MWD Department learned.
"I learned their dogs different responses," McAnally said. "How they react when the dog does find aid, or a source. I learned what their dogs do during patrol." McAnally also thought the exercise was a giant success and looks forward to working with the Italian K-9 units again. "I think it brings both us and the local nationals together because we kind of understand each other," McAnally said. " We both have something in common, so this way they can teach us things and we can teach them things while understanding the ways they train compared to how we train." Along with doing joint task training with local forces, NAS Sigonella MWD Department also maintains good relations through the Italian community by executing patrols and detection demonstrations for Italian schools.

Panetta: Program will help transitioning troops get jobs BY LISA DANIEL American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, July 24, 2012 – A redesigned program for service members separating from the military will help veterans better apply the experience they’ve gained in uniform, Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta said. President Barack Obama announced the revamped program, called “Transition GPS,” in a speech yesterday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars national convention in Reno, Nev. "I applaud the leadership of President Obama to bring together government agencies around the goal of enhancing career opportunities for service members," Panetta said in a statement. "Our personnel have developed extraordinary technical expertise and world-class leadership skills that are in high demand. Transition GPS will help military members apply their experience to additional training, formal education, and develop successful civilian careers." Transition GPS is the first major overhaul of the military’s Transition Assistance Program in nearly 20 years, White House officials said. TAP was developed by an interagency team from the departments of Defense, Veterans Affairs, Labor, Education and Homeland Security, as along with the Office of Personnel and Management and the Small Business Administration. Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric K. Shinseki said the redesign will better ensure that veterans today and in the future will receive the care and benefits they have earned. "One of our fundamental responsibilities as a government is to properly prepare and support those serving in our military so they are career ready as they transition back into civilian life,” he said. "This collaborative effort will have an impact well beyond this current generation of individuals returning from combat." The redesign is being developed by the Veterans Employment Initiative Task Force created in August to
help separating service members successfully transition to the civilian workforce, start a business, or pursue higher education. TAP consisted of pre-separation counseling and a voluntary, three-day workshop from the departments of Labor, Defense and Veterans Affairs that was presented at selected military installations and attended by nearly half of the service members who separated from the services each year, White House officials said. Transition GPS is designed to strengthen, standardize and expand counseling and guidance for service members before leaving the military, and transform the military's approach to education, training, and credentialing, they added. Transition GPS is to be implemented throughout the military by the end of 2013. It will: -- Extend the current three-day transition program to five to seven days; -- Offer individual assessment and counseling, including an individual transition plan; -- Include a five-day curriculum of financial planning, available veterans' benefits and services and a redesigned employment workshop; -- Include a “Military Occupational Code Crosswalk” to translate military skills, training and experiences into civilian occupations and credentialing; -- Include optional training specific to pursuing higher education, technical skills and training, or starting a business; -- Include a “capstone” event to verify that the participant is career-ready; -- Give a “warm handover” to appropriate government agencies and organizations for continued benefits, services and support of veterans; and -- Create a “Military Life Cycle Transition Model” to incorporate career readiness and transition preparation early into a service member’s career.
