Service members from the Sigonella community joined together to participate in Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella’s 8th annual Sexual Assault Awareness Walk in front of the Admin Building on NAS II, April 24. The walk was the final event for April, designated as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which included such activities as selfdefense classes and information tables set-up around the Sigonella community to distribute literature and bring awareness to the issue of sexual assault. According to Sigonella Sexual Assault Response Coordinator Angela Dooney, the statistically “at-risk” population for sexual assault are E-1 – E-4 females between ages 18 and 24, and service members away from home for the first time. Most sexual assaults are alcohol related and involve an acquaintance. In response to these statistics, the Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) developed the Sigonella Safe (SIG Safe) program, which focuses on high-risk behaviors, risk reduction, and active by-stander intervention.
This year’s Department of Defense (DoD) theme, “We own it …We’ll solve it …Together,” conveys the principle that it is the duty of each and every service member to actively combat sexual assault and ultimately, collectively eliminate sexual assault. “It is paramount that we take measures to prevent sexual assault through risk reduction and active bystander intervention,” said Dooney. "We must also ensure that victims of sexual assault are supported through initial command and system response and throughout their ongoing recovery process.” Victims may not want to come forward for a number of reasons, so there is an option available for restricted reporting which allows the victim to seek needed services. With the unrestricted reporting option, law enforcement and the command are notified and medical and support services are provided. Restricted reporting is confidential and provides the victim with medical treatment, counseling, and advocacy services without command and law
enforcement notification. DoD Directive 6495.01 provides the restricted reporting option to active duty service members and their family members ages 18 and older. Dooney also wanted to point out the tireless efforts of all the victim advocates who stand by 24 hours a day to respond to a sexual assault report. “I would like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank our incredible team of victim advocates, who are truly on the front lines, responding to calls of sexual assault, day and night, 24/7. It is by no means an “easy” job, but it is a very important job and so this community thanks you for your volunteerism and service!” Due to the fact that most sexual assaults involve alcohol and young service members, the Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD), the Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program (SARP), and Drug and Alcohol Program Advisors (DAPA) all had members present to show their support and dedication to preventing sexual assaults.

Direct Line NAS Sigonella Command Master Chief David Graham Buongiorno Sigonellans! As we begin the month of May I just want to thank everyone who worked so hard to promote a culture of awareness about sexual assault. Our Sexual Assault Prevention and Response volunteers worked diligently providing the community with information booths, the Sexual Assault Awareness Walk, and self-defense classes. It was great to see so many folks come out from so many organizations and commands to take part in our annual walk. It really emphasized the theme for this year, "We own it...We'll solve it...Together.” I would like to say a big thank you to Fleet Master Chief Ortloff for stopping by and visiting with members of the Sigonella Area CPOA, participating in the base CPO 365 and having lunch and mentoring our CSADD Chapter. Our next big event here at Sigonella is the annual Relay for Life, coming up on May 18. Last year we had a terrific turnout as we launched Sigonella’s first 24-hour event. I encourage everyone to come out and support in some way, whether it be to participate with a team, walk on your own, or just come out and support the event and those who have been affected by cancer in some way. Sadly, most of
us have been affected either directly or indirectly by cancer. Let’s come together on May 18 and take steps (literally) to help find a cure. See you there! Our next four-day weekend happens at the end of this month with the celebration of Memorial Day. The weather in Sigonella is getting better and better, drawing more people to participate in outdoor activities. I can never stress enough about staying safe in whatever leisure activity you choose to participate in. Always be careful when using outdoor grills and be sure the coals are completely cooled before walking away for the day. If you are taking part in water sports, make sure you are with friends and that they know where you are at all times. And if you’re just out relaxing having a few drinks, have a plan to make sure you get back home safe. Have a designated driver or just stay at a friend’s house. But above all, “Don’t Drink and Drive.” Sigonella has much to offer. Please enjoy them safely and responsibly. Following the Memorial Day weekend are the “101 days of summer.” This is generally that time period between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend. Although these are the times that most

people are getting out and about more, cooking out more, and so on, that is never truer than here in Sigonella. Our summers here are almost completely free of rain and pretty much every day is perfect for getting outside. I ask that each of you take all the proper precautions necessary when participating in water sports at the pool or beaches, taking road trips around Sicily, or just having a cookout at your home. I want all the memories you make here during your tour in Sigonella to be enjoyable ones.
Sigonellans attended the second annual panel discussion on Homeschooling, April 26 in the Chart Room at Midtown on NAS I. Several of the families in attendance had fairly young children and were PCS'ing back to the States very soon. They were investigating homeschooling as an option for their future. “Homeschooling is a lifestyle, not just a path to a great education," said Ann Forrest, homeschoolers board president. "It's a journey that requires great commitment, but the rewards are limitless." The Sigonella homeschoolers board is dedicated to assisting families who wish to explore their educational options. Meet the challenges of deployment, bounce back stronger than ever … Family Connection Newsletter, March 2013
Resilience; the new buzz word! What do the Fleet and Family Support Centers (FSSCs) offer to help our Sailors and families build resilience? What we have always done: provide education, information and resources to effectively manage the issues that are inherent to the military life. These services ensure our Sailors and families build the resilience to withstand the demands of the navy’s increased operational tempo (OPTEMPO), which has resulted in short turn-around times between deployment and extended deployments, some lasting more than 10 months. While this increase in OPTEMPO is stressful for even the most experienced Navy spouse, to a new Navy spouse, it can be overwhelming. To help meet this challenge, New Spouse Orientation is offered at FFSCs Navy-Wide as well as online. The New Spouse On-Demand Training is a free online course designed to support new Navy spouses who may be geographically isolated and those who are unable to attend the FFSC workshop in person. Available 24/7, this curriculum will help new military spouses familiarize themselves with administrative details, customs, language and recourses. There are also a number of military and community based programs available to augment
deployment and mobilization support services provided by FFSCs: The Bureau of Medicine and Surgery created the Families OverComing Under Stress (FOCUS) Project, which provides resilience training to military children and families. It teaches practical skills to meet the challenges of deployment and reintegration, to communicate and solve problems effectively and to successfully set goals together and create a shared family story. The Navy and Marine Corp Public Health Center provides products and topic areas specifically for service members, families and retirees to effectively navigate stress and build resilience. Resources for suicide prevention, anger management and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are provided as well. Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) National Military Services unites three successful, longstanding programs: VFW Operation Uplink, VFW Unmet Needs and the VFW Military Ass8istance Program (MAP). These initiatives are just a few of the ways VFW works to support our brave men and women and their families. Their motto is, “We’ve been there. We Understand.” These are just a few of the many available resources. For more information contact FFSC at 624-4291.

Join the Red Cross and MWR for the 2nd annual Bike Rodeo, a fun event designed to teach children bicycle safety and proper technique as well as promote a healthy, active lifestyle, by maneuvering through obstacle courses, learning to utilize hand signals, and receiving instruction on simple bike maintenance. This FREE event is May 5, from 1- 4 p.m. at the Marinai Sports Field Parking Lot. Register at the Red Cross today! The rodeo was created by (retired) Red Cross Volunteer Charles Schmidt and his wife Jane Schmidt to inform children within the military base community of the same bike safety precautions as "civilian" neighborhoods. Often times, children become comfortable with the slow traffic and freedoms of neighborhoods such as Marinai, without being familiar with regular safety rules. This is an event you will not want to miss.

On May 10, the Trecastagni Catholic community will hold a spectacular and heartfelt religious festival to pay homage to the three town’s patron Saints, the Martyr Brothers or “Alfio, Filadelfo and Cirino,” featuring processions, parades of Sicilian carts, religious plays and performances, fireworks, food booths, a garlic fair, and local band concerts. (Photo by http://isolainfesta.criluge.org)
Trecastagni honor Three Patron Saints Just like parents share love among all their children, Trecastagni townspeople share their faith among three saints. The Martyr Brothers or “Alfio, Filadelfo and Cirino,” are the three town’s patrons. Devotees believe these saints have the power to win divine aid for mortal petitioners by interceding with God. Celebrations, which go back to the 16th century, also include a spectacular Sicilian carts parade and the traditional garlic fair that seems to be very popular among the Sigonella community. Garlic is considered as a symbol of the pilgrim’s participation in the festival and is traditionally believed to keep evil away and grant health and protection from illness. So make sure you make a good supply of it! Celebrations actually begin on May 1 with hundreds of pilgrims performing under all weather conditions the Viaggio di Sant’Alfio (St. Alfio’s journey). It is a visit to the sanctuary that is paid daily from May 1 through 10, to fulfill the vows they have made to the saint for granting a wish or bringing themselves or their beloved relatives and friends safely through an accident or an illness. Although, this pilgrimages might seem less “picturesque” than the ones performed by the Nudi in the night between May 9 and 10, (during which devotees wearing white shorts and a red band on the chest also walk (some barefoot) from Catania and other Etna towns to the Sanctuary of St. Alfio) the St. Alfio’s journeys are still a genuine and low-profiled display of true devotion. Historic chronicles tell us that, in the year 1516, “The Three Saints” began to be venerated with a particular fervor in Trecastagni after the finding of their relics in a monastery near Messina. Throughout the centuries the festival was enriched with more elements like the representation of the life of the Three Saints. Life of the Three Saints: Accounts of the life and the martyrdom of the three saints can be found in a manuscript by a monk who lived in the 11th century and in a book, dating back to 1691, written by priest Filadelfio Mauro. Both lived in Lentini. The Three Saints were born in Vaste (Lecce) in the III century. During the persecutions made by the Romans against the Christians, they were arrested and forced to leave Sicily to go to Rome where they were convicted and tortured. Historic chronicles tell of miracles worked by the saints like for instance the fact that every place they visited became a Catholic community. Since they belonged to a noble family, Romans feared that they could influence other aristocrats therefore they used them as scapegoats to convince the others to stay away from the Catholic religion.
MAY 3, 2013
After being tortured in Pozzuoli and then back in Sicily, they were eventually martyred in Lentini on May 10, 253 AD. Although the festival was meant to celebrate all three saints, the devotion of St. Alfio somehow darkened the memory of the other two saints. This is probably due to the fact that Alfio was the elder brother and consequently was the one who always spoke on behalf of his family. During the centuries, people tended to ask St. Alfio rather than to his brothers intercession for healing from serious illnesses and injuries. Once the miracle is granted, devotees feel obligated to thank the saint. That is why today the Nudi still perform with spectacular processions carrying heavy wax candles that can weigh up to 220 pounds. Around the candle a red ribbon with a picture of the saints is tied. Throughout the centuries, the desire to give thanks to the saints has also been driving pilgrims, who were healed after praying the saints, to paint or commission ex-votos that are pictures on wood, cardboard or canvas describing the accident for which the saint help was invoked. Trecastagni boasts an impressive collection of hundreds of those ex-voto icons, which also includes artificial limbs donated after the healing to the sanctuary by the pilgrims. Visiting the collection is a touching experience, every painting tells a story of joys and sorrows. Aci Sant’Antonio Sicilian carts’ craftsmen have been the authors of those art pieces. They are among the few artists who keep alive this ancient decorating tradition. Don’t miss it! Festival Schedule Highlights: The festival starts on May 6 with the procession of the three candelore, (heavy wooden floats, about six meters in height, with a big main wax candle surrounded by sculptures representing the martyrdom of the three saints) leaving from the Saint Alfio’s sanctuary. At 5 p.m., these beautiful decorated floats are carried in procession throughout the city historic center. These processions will be repeated daily through May 11. On the second day of the festa (May 7), the Sagra delle Musiche, a music show is performed at 6 p.m. by local bands in piazza Saint Alfio. On May 8 at 7:30 p.m. the relics of the Saints are brought in procession from the main church to the Saint Alfio sanctuary. The procession lasts until late evening. During the tour of the relics, the city band will be performing in piazza dei Bianchi throughout the night. In the evening, at 9 p.m. a religious play telling the story of the saints’ lives is staged right outside the St. Alfio Sanctuary. The highlight of May 9 (the third day of the festival) is undoubtedly the spectacular fireworks’ show that is performed at 9 p.m. in piazza Marconi (the main square) and the local soccer field. Several pyrotechnic operators from all over Sicily will be competing for the best performance. But even more spectacular is the long and exhausting journey that is undertaken by barefoot pilgrims coming from all Trecastagni’s surrounding towns, who walk all night long until they get to the Sanctuary, to show their faith to the saints. The celebrations highlight is May 10 when the unveiling of the Tree Saints’ Statues is performed before a huge crowd of devotees at 9 a.m. The ceremony takes place at the Saint Alfio’s Sanctuary, located in piazza St. Alfio, where the statues are usually kept. After that, the statues are placed on the carriage to be ready for the long procession. Later on, the first solemn procession during which the statues will be carried in procession throughout the historic center begins at 1 p.m. After the stop at the main church (Chiesa madre di San Nicola) the procession is repeated at 5 p.m. and lasts until late night. The last day of the festival (May 11) features a solemn Holy Mass, held at 7 p.m. at the main church, at which the Catania Archbishop will preside. During the mass a coir and organ concert is performed. As the schedule might be subject to changes, call the St. Alfio Sanctuary at 095-7806502 or the Trecastagni City Hall at 0957020011 (both Italian speaking only) before you decide to attend the Festa. Enrico Letta appointed Italian premierdesignate (Associated Press) ROME - New Italian prime minister-designate Enrico Letta said he will immediately begin working on moving beyond the country's "fragile and unprecedented" political situation to recover support for an Italian political class he said "has lost all credibility." Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, reappointed for a second term Saturday, tapped Letta, a veteran center-left lawmaker, for the job Wednesday, bringing to an end a political stalemate that lasted more than eight weeks since an inconclusive result to Italy's elections in February. At 46, Letta is the second-youngest Italian prime minister ever, and Italians said they hoped his youth would signal a change in the longtime status quo for a country that has suffered from two decades of weak economic growth and political instability. "I find it absurd that Italy has for so long been led by leaders in their 70s and 80s," said Gianpiero Cognoli, a Rome-based professional actor. "I hope a new generation can finally bring about some meaningful change. Italy needs it." Letta said his main priority was to address the "enormous, unbearable" economic emergency in the euro-zone's third-largest economy. Italy has been in recession for more than a year, and unemployment is at 11.6% with youth unemployment at 37.8%. Letta represents something of a new generation in Italian politics after the traditional guard has been discredited by scandals, infighting and inertia. In a perhaps scripted but nevertheless significant gesture, Letta drove himself to the presidential palace to accept the job as premier in his own Fiat. Normally politicians are driven around town with an accompanying motorcade. "Somebody has to help pull us out of this mess we're in," said Antonello Constantino, 40, a Roman coffee bar worker. After weeks of fruitless negotiations, the appointment of Letta capped a flurry of activity in recent days that started when Napolitano, 87, was convinced Saturday to sign on for a second seven-year term despite his desire to retire. Monday, he chastised lawmakers for allowing the impasse to last so long, wagging his finger. Voice cracking with emotion, he threatened to leave if a government was not formed soon. Two days later, Letta was appointed. "It felt good to have Napolitano stay on," said Flavia Fiorentina, an archaeologist with the Rome city government. "We needed an experienced hand to lead this process, and now we have the result. I really hope the new government will be a success." Letta's first order of business will be to appoint ministers to his government - he said he would start consultations for this step Thursday. Once appointed, the new government will face a confidence vote in the same deadlocked parliament elected two months ago. He must pass that vote to take power. Napolitano said he had received assurances that the two biggest blocs in arliament would support Letta. "It is the only possible solution," Napolitano said, calling Letta the figure who could rally "a broad convergence of the political forces that can assure a majority in both houses to the government." "With the responsible support of the political forces, Premier Letta will be able to consolidate Italy's international credibility," Italy's current premier, Mario Monti, said in a statement. His general plan of government has been sketched out by a 10-member committee of "wise men" Napolitano appointed this month. "The new government will operate with what we call a 'pre-agreed program,'" said Stefano Quintarelli, one of 344 first-time parliamentarians elected in February's vote. "It's anyone's guess how it will play out in the end, but the hope is that a wider base of support will form and that the government can stay in power for a year or two and make some needed reforms."
PAGE 7
Letta ostensibly enjoys the backing of the centerright coalition led by billionaire media tycoon and three-time premier Silvio Berlusconi and the centrist party led by outgoing Prime Minister Mario Monti, but experts said it is not clear how such an alliance will work in practical terms. Letta - whose uncle, Gianni Letta, is a longtime ally of controversial three-time premier Berlusconi has big challenges waiting for him. At least early on, each parliamentary vote he faces will be a difficult exercise in cobbling together enough parliamentary support to assure passage. A major setback could force Napolitano to call for new elections. If that happens, Berlusconi could still be waiting in the wings. According to Maria Rossi, co-director of the polling company Opinioni, if new elections were held today, Berlusconi and his allies would probably win. Once the optimism tied to the new government wanes, Berlusconi's support could rise even further. "If the new government is ineffective, things could turn against them quickly," Rossi said. The 5-Star Movement, which campaigned on a platform of sending Italy's traditional political classes packing and was the third-largest vote-getter in the elections, vowed to be in opposition to any government. The movement's comic-turned-leader, Beppe Grillo, denounced the selection of Letta and accused Italy's traditional parties of closing ranks in an act of self-protection. Letta has had a long history in government. In 1998, Letta became the youngest government minister in Italy's history when then-Premier Massimo D'Alema named him minister for European policy. He had other ministerial posts in subsequent center-left governments and in 2008 won a Parliament seat with the newly formed Democratic Party. He has written several books about European policy and studied international law before entering politics.
After 15 years on the run, fugitive hidden by family caught; man charged with kidnapping and conspiracy nabbed by police (ANSA) Naples, April 24 - A fugitive on the run for 15 years was arrested by police as he left a butcher shop near the southern Italian city of Caserta. The council of Montebello Jonico has been dissolved for 18 months, under orders of the Interior Ministry, over mafia connections with local politicians. ON THE GO WITH MWR
MWR’s Fitness Field of Dreams! BY John Lenz MWR “If you build it, he will come” is what Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella heard from his corn field in the 1989 movie, Field of Dreams. While I don’t expect Shoeless Joe Jackson and other baseball players to arrive at the NAS II multisport field this October, we are building it! The long rumored artificial turf field and lighting replacement construction has begun and will become a reality. No more rock hard field suffering through a hot Sicilian summer! A completion target date of October 8, 2013 has been set for the NAS II playfield to receive artificial turf and new sports lighting. The batting cages will also receive new equipment and open when the field is ready for play. Arriving in the near future will be a new portable outfield fence that is expandable, highly durable, strong, tough, and portable, allowing the staff to convert the dimensions from an adult slow pitch field to a girls’ fast pitch field in a short time. A new multi-sport scoreboard will also be installed. FieldTurf Optimum made by Tarkett Sports Company will be installed in place of the current grass and dirt infield. Tarkett is a leader in the industry
Don't miss the fun ... Here's what's happe ning:
and the Optimum turf is a highperformance fiber built for durability and longevity. The sport lighting will allow a return of intramural sports to be played after the sun has set. The sports department is excited to be able to once again host a Midnight Madness softball tournament in the coming seasons. The MWR fitness & sports staff envision many uses for the field, to include: command and individual physical training, special events like the Command Challenge, flag football, ultimate Frisbee, softball, and much more! MWR has new equipment ready to be utilized once the field is ready for play. The picnic pavilion and sand volleyball court will remain open during the construction and you may reserve the pavilion at the NAS II Flightline Fitness Center. The tennis courts will be impacted for approximately one month, starting April 22 while a new rebound wall is constructed. So, with a little patience we are all looking forward to the first pitch, home run, touchdown, and goal! See you all at the ribbon cutting ceremony in October.

Logistics Specialist Seaman Patrick Antio uses a forklift to transport a 55 gallon drum of HAZMAT to a storage unit April 18 for Naval Supply Sigonella HAZMAT Center. (U.S. Navy photo by MC3 Cameron Bramham/Released)
by mc3 cameron bramham NAS Sigonella Public Affairs For the Sailors stationed at Naval Supply (NAVSUP) Sigonella Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) Center, they know how important it is to handle these valuable yet dangerous materials with care. Most jobs in the Navy require dealing with HAZMAT on a regular basis. However, HAZMAT can cause harm to a person’s health or operational conditions if handled improperly, inadvertently spilled or accidentally mixed the wrong way. “We pretty much control all of the HAZMAT around the base,” NAVSUP Sigonella HAZMAT Leading Chief Petty Officer Shanty Casimiro said. “We have to make sure there is no unauthorized HAZMAT around and we make sure all of our customers are in compliance within the final converting standards that the Italian host nation has for us.” HAZMAT, like anything required in the Navy,
needs proper financial capabilities to insure suitable funding is used when ordering products. NAVSUP Sigonella HAZMAT Financial Representative, Logistics Specialist Seaman Patrick Antio is in charge of keeping HAZMAT finances for all 72 commands stationed at or deployed to Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella. “I also aid in ordering all of the materials for the commands,” Antio added. “The command gives us the funding and I place the order for them.” Overall, the NAVSUP Sigonella HAZMAT team is dedicated to making sure each customer receives the proper HAZMAT needed to complete the task or mission. This can be challenging when dealing with more than 650 different kinds of HAZMAT for each command here, but the Sailors at NAVSUP Sigonella HAZMAT ensures every customer is taken care of properly and safely.
