USNH Sigonella Sailors participate in DECON Training Exercise

IGONELLA, Sicily (Aug. 29, 2013) -- Hospital Corpsman stationed at U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Sigonella participated in a decontamination training exercise hosted by Decontamination Education and Consulting On Nuclear/Biological/ Chemical (DECON) LLC Aug. 29, outside the U.S. Naval hospital at Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella. The exercise followed a week-long classroom decontamination course, which covered the handling and operation of decontamination equipment, different kinds of hazardous materials, signs and symptoms hazardous materials may have on patients, and how to treat patients with symptoms caused by hazardous material. “The one thing that I really stressed is making sure the participants protect the hospital.” said Charlie Jansen, DECON, LLC Instructor. “If they let in contaminated people, they’ve lost the capability to have medical operations in that building.”

According to the DECON LLC website, their training courses provide the tools and skills necessary to maintain an effective level of decontamination operational ability in the event of a chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear incident. “It was the first time for a lot of people participating in the DECON training here at the hospital and it was really nice that the DECON team came out,” said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class (SW/AW) Derrick Johnson, DECON training exercise participant. “It makes us aware of situations. If we would have any type of chemical attack, it prepares us. For us taking care of the whole base, I think that’s good training to take part in.” The DECON LLC standard of completing the training exercise of donning gear and setting up the decontamination equipment station is 20 minutes. The USNH Sigonella participants successfully completed this portion of the training exercise in nine minutes, 48 seconds.

The exercise was also supported and observed by USNH Sigonella’s Commanding Officer Capt. Patricia McDonald, Executive Officer Capt. John A. Lamberton, and members from the Emergency Management Department. “It’s always great coming out here to Sigonella,” said Jansen. “The group that was out here today was pretty impressive, watching them go from not even knowing what the equipment looks like, to setting up, and even processing a couple patients. They did very well.”

Direct Line

Executive Officer Cmdr. Eric Vosler

This week, people around the world will pause to reflect on the tragic events of September 11th, 2001. Simply put, that day created direct or indirect changes in all of our lives. Deployments, air travel, and many other things that we live with every day made a significant course correction. For the last dozen years, we, and our Nation’s forces, fight against terrorism – and all those who intend our Nation harm. Sigonella is an integral part of that effort and it remains my honor to serve alongside each of you. Proud to Serve! This year, our Chiefs and Chief selects will lead a ceremony to honor those lost during the tragic events of 9-11, and those who continue to serve, to ensure such events are never, ever repeated. I encourage all of you to come out and take part in this remembrance ceremony. It will be held on Tuesday, September 11th at the Midtown complex. Please plan

to attend the ceremony and bring your family if you are able to. The 2013-14 sports season has started and I encourage the entire Sigonella community to get involved and support our schools as they begin their seasons. First up are our Sigonella Swordfish, who will welcome the Naples Tigersharks for the first swim meet of the season on Sept. 8. Unfortunately, due to a lack of numbers, Sigonella will not be fielding a football team this year; however, boys volleyball has been added to the schedule and both the girls and boys teams will be hosting Naples here on Sept. 20. Please come out and show your support for all our youth sports programs. After the rain over Labor Day weekend, I don’t have to remind you all that rainy season is approaching and that can make driving in Sicily an even greater challenge. Take some time to ensure that your vehicles are in condition to handle

the Fall and Winter road conditions here, and that you have an emergency kit tucked away in the car…just in case you overestimate the reliability of your island beater or in case of an emergency. You can never be too prepared!

Influenza season 2013-14 The primary method of reducing the risk of influenza is to get vaccinated. Influenza or “FLU" has the potential to adversely impact Navy force readiness and mission execution. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), influenza results in more than 25 million reported cases, 150,000 hospitalizations from serious complications and approximately 24,000 deaths each year in the United States. In order to keep us mission ready and protect the public’s health, flu vaccine is mandatory for all military personnel (Active Duty & Reserves), as well as civilian health care workers providing direct patient care, DoDDs staff and students, and CDC staff (unless you are medically or administratively exempt). If you are in one of these groups, a vaccination stand-down will be coordinated for your respective facility location. This year all Active Duty service members will be vaccinated at a 48 Hour Mass Vaccination Exercise. Our objective is to test the Naval Hospital Sigonella Pandemic Influenza Mass Vaccination Plan. Be sure to keep your copy of the screening form that will be completed at the vaccination stand-down. It will act as your “receipt” for having received either the vaccine or the exemption. If we don’t have a record of your vaccination and your name appears on a delinquency list, you will need to either show your receipt or receive the vaccine again.

Other groups in our community are at higher risk for complications from influenza infection. Those considered Medically High Risk are listed below and are strongly encouraged to come to the hospital to receive the flu vaccine as soon as possible: • Pregnant women • Individuals living with or caring for infants less than 2 years old • Children between 6 month and 4 years of age • People 50 years and older • Anyone with one of the following medical conditions: chronic lung disease such as asthma or emphysema, heart disease, chronic kidney or liver disease, a cognitive or neuromuscular disorder, a metabolic disease (including diabetes), or immunosuppression (caused by medications or by another medical condition) Even if you are not in any of these groups, flu vaccine is now recommended for everyone. Remember, flu shot or the nasal spray flu vaccine doesn’t protect you from the common cold. Handwashing, coughing or sneezing into your elbow rather than your hand, and staying home when you’re ill are simple ways we can all help keep our community healthy! Talk to your healthcare provider if you have any questions regarding what flu vaccine options are best for you and your family.

October is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. The loss of a pregnancy is devastating at any stage and the grief and physical pain associated with the loss often goes unacknowledged. The death of a baby is one of the most painful things that can happen to a family. It's so unfair. Babies aren't supposed to die. They are the beginning of life, not the end. Unfortunately, one in four women experiences the loss of a pregnancy in her lifetime, whether it be a miscarriage, a stillborn baby, or a newborn death For those women who have experienced perinatal loss, there is the Sigonella Faces of Loss, Faces of Hope support group. This group is part of the National Faces of Loss, Faces of Hope group, which is striving to put a face on miscarriage, stillbirth and infant loss, bringing awareness to this issue. Often these are topics that make people uncomfortable and that people don’t like to talk about. The loss of a pregnancy can be minimized and the grieving process disregarded. This is a group where women can come together to share their triumphs and failures on their journey

to healing and to form relationships with others going through the same process. All women who have ever experienced the loss of a pregnancy or infant are invited to join us, regardless of how much time has passed. The peer led group meets the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at the NAS I Chapel. On Oct. 19, 2013 at 6 p.m. the members of Sigonella Faces of Loss, Faces of Hope will be gathering in the Community Center Parking lot at the Maranai housing complex for the second annual “Walk to Remember.” This walk is dedicated to all the babies who die each year through pregnancy loss, stillbirth, or newborn death. Anyone whose lives have been touched by the tragic loss of a baby is welcome to join us for a candlelit walk around Maranai, followed by a special ceremony to remember the babies that were loved and lost. devotees left the candles lit on the wooden carriage to honor the Madonna. The wax melted and set both the carriage and the painting on fire. Thus, a new statue was needed to replace the damaged one. While this new statue was being carved in Paris, a wax sculpture depicting the child Virgin Mary (named “bammina” which in Italian means female child) was temporary displayed in the sanctuary. The new statue, carved by a French monk, was put back in its place in 1889. The Sanctuary that hosts the precious statue was built in 1392, although historic chronicles state that the named “Santa Maria di Lognina” was already paying tributes to the Vatican in 1308. In a 16th century document, a local notary named Merlino wrote that the church had miraculously survived the “Terremoto magnus” (the big earthquake) that destroyed the local area in 1542. Merlino also wrote that after the earthquake a group of prisoners were temporary locked up in the church since the prison was destroyed. In 1676, historian Giovanni Andrea Massa wrote that pilgrims from all over the world came to the Ognina Sanctuary to thank the Virgin Mary for the graces (healing or other miracles) she had granted them. After a terrible earthquake in 1693, the church was rebuilt in a new location facing north. The church consists of three naves. In the 17th century, Giacomo Vignerio, a Raphael student, painted its interior.

FESTIVAL SCHEDULE:

On Sept. 8, the coastal community of Ognina in Catania will hold the traditional festival honoring the Madonna di Ognina or Virgin Mary Festival with religious processions both at sea and through the streets of the neighborhood, fireworks, and food booths. (Photo by http://www. isolainfesta.net) Remains of relatives of the woman believed to be the "Mona Lisa" model have been recently found in a Florentine crypt. Researchers plan to check their DNA against the DNA of a skeleton found at her burial site. If there is a match, they will reconstruct the skeleton's face and compare it to the portrait. (photo by http://www.ldmnews.it)

Could crypt reveal face of 'Mona Lisa' model? by CNN

The recent exhumation of three bodies from a Florentine crypt may have brought Italian researchers a step closer to confirming the identity of the woman believed to be the subject of Leonardo da Vinci's famous "Mona Lisa" painting, also known as "La Gioconda." "La Gioconda" refers to Lisa Gherardini, the second wife of a Florentine silk merchant, Francesco del Giocondo. The remains of del Giocondo, his son by Gherardini -- Piero -- and Gherardini's stepson Bartolomeo have been uncovered in their family crypt, the authority of Florence has announced. A team led by Silvano Vinceti accessed the remains beneath the Chapel of the Holy Martyrs, in Florence on Aug. 6, it said in a statement. Last year, Vinceti's team exhumed the remains of eight women from the ruins of a Franciscan convent in Florence where old city records said Gherardini had been buried. A laboratory at the University of Bologna had established that three of the skeletons at the St. Ursula convent were consistent with the age at which Gherardini had died, the statement said. Further carbon testing to establish which of those skeletons dated from the 16th century -when Gherardini died -- was being carried out at the University of Salento, it quoted Vinceti as saying.

If DNA taken from the del Giocondo family remains matched one of the skeletons found in the convent ruins, the skeleton could be confirmed as Gherardini's, he said. Scientists could then reconstruct Gherardini's face and compare it to da Vinci's mysterious portrait. Talking to CNN's Ben Wedeman when the convent skeletons were found last year, Vinceti said the reconstruction would have a margin of error of just 2 to 8% -- once researchers factored in that Gherardini had probably been in her early 20s when she posed for da Vinci. Vinceti told Wedeman he was certain that da Vinci had been commissioned to paint a portrait of Gherardini but could not be sure that the "Mona Lisa" was of her, or just contained some of her features. For starters, the famous smile was not Gherardini's, he said. Analysis of the "Mona Lisa" had shown that "when Leonardo began painting the model in front of him, he did not draw that metaphysical, ironic, poignant, elusive smile, but rather he painted a person who was dark and depressed." A reconstruction would finally answer the question art historians had been unable to resolve, Vinceti said: "Who was the model for Leonardo?"

Ognina Virgin Mary Festival in Catania Sept. 8 It’s that time of the year again! The Ognina fishermen’s neighborhood in Catania is ready to pay homage to the beloved Holy Mary who is believed to protect fishing boats crews during their work out at sea. Tradition holds that on March 26, 1933, a violent sea storm threatened the gulf of Ognina in Catania. Part of the pier and some boats were damaged. The houses overlooking the coast were lapped against by the waves. Chronicles of the time estimated that the waves were more than 40 feet tall. Therefore, in order to avert the danger local fishermen turned to the Virgin Mary for help. They placed the statue of the Madonna on the church’s square, after moving it from the altar of the Ognina Sanctuary. Hours later, the sea calmed down; a miracle. This is one of the extraordinary events that strengthened the devotion of the Ognina fishermen toward the Virgin Mary. Today, they still pray to her in times illness or help in getting out of a difficult situation. As in the past, today’s fishermen still exchange a special greeting among each other, as a tribute to both Jesus and the Virgin Mary. As two boats cross during night fishing, a crew leader says “Virgin Mary!” and the other replies “Jesus.” Then, they exchange information on the outcome of the fishing. The fishermen’s strong devotion brought them to celebrate a yearly festival to honor the Virgin Mary. The origin of the festival dates back to the 19th century. The financial support to organize the festival was initially given by the residents of the area. Money was collected and put into a pottery moneybox, named “Caruseddi.” The moneyboxes were later broken during a short ceremony held on the Friday preceding the actual festival celebrated on Sept. 8. Recently, it was decided that each fisherman, instead of giving a donation would allocate half of his own weekly income, named the “menza parti” to support the organization of the festival. Originally, a statue depicting the Virgin Mary was brought in procession on a wooden carriage through the few practicable streets of Ognina district. Then, on Sept. 12, 1889, a fire occurred after the festival as the

On Sept. 8, at 8 a.m., the festival opens with the “Svelata,” the unveiling of the statue depicting the Virgin Mary. The statue is lighted and placed next to the tabernacles to symbolize the union with her son Jesus. Holy masses will be celebrated at 10 a.m., noon and 7 p.m. At 5 p.m., the archbishop of Catania, after a firework show, will celebrate a solemn mass before the church’s portico. A music show will end the celebration at 9:30 p.m. The “Processione della Madonna a mare,” the procession of the Virgin Mary at sea will begin at 6 p.m. The statue is placed on a boat and brought in procession around the gulf of Ognina. On Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. and noon a holy mass will be celebrated. At 11 a.m., local children will be blessed during the “Family Consecration Ceremony.” In the afternoon at 5 p.m., the statue depicting the Virgin Mary will be brought in procession through the streets of the Ognina district. A spectacular firework show will be held at 11:30 p.m. The port of Ognina is located in Catania and is easy to reach. From the Catania Train Station, take Viale Africa. Once you get to Piazza Europa, turn right and drive for about a mile along the Riviera. You will then reach a little port right before the overpass that leads toward Acicastello. The church is located under the road. For more information and detailed festival schedules visit www.santamariadiognina.it

Homeless Italian serves sentence on street (The Local)

Codispoti, 48, was put under house arrest for two years after a series of crimes including robbery, petty theft and drug dealing, Italian media recently reported. Being homeless, he was condemned instead to a particular spot on Via Vittor Pasani, close to Milan's train station. The two-year sentence was soon extended to April 2014 after further run-ins with the police. Officers check on him at 10 p.m. each night, just as he’s snuggling into his sleeping bag, and then return for a wake-up call at 7 a.m. the next day, after which he is free to roam, Corriere della Sera said. "I have always done my stealing at night," Codispiti is reported as saying. "That's why the court gave me this sentence. Since I don't have a house, there was no other solution left. During the night I can't move.” Codispoti reportedly asked to be placed in jail, but his request was denied. His lawyer Andreas D’Amicis is trying to lift the measure, according to a report in Articolo Tre. “My client should be in a home or in a community, at least with a roof over his head," D’Amicis said.

Italian seas more polluted, report says; Sardinia has cleanest coastlines (ANSA)

Rome - Italian seas are less clean than last year with 130 polluted areas, one every 57 km of coastline, according to an annual report by environment group Legambiente recently released. The findings last year identified one polluted area every 62 km. The regions of Campania, Lazio, Puglia and Calabria had the biggest number of polluted seaside locations while Sardinia still enjoyed the cleanest seas in the country. Overall, 50% of the areas monitored by Legambiente researchers in the past two months along 7,412.6 km of coastline were polluted. Much of the pollution is transported by streams and rivers, the report said, with 90% of polluted areas close to water outlets into the sea.

Italian authorities crack down on fake prosecco

(Decanter.com) Treviso- Winemaker Andrea Battistella, was recently appointed by the Italian agricultural ministry to investigate and report venues to the authorities who are selling imitation Prosecco from carafe or on draft. The “special monitoring agent”, as he is known, will be based in the town of Treviso, north of Venice. He is just the first of many as the region has plans to appoint more inspectors in the coming months. Ensuring that Prosecco is the real deal

PAGE 7

seems to be a genuine concern. Roberto Cremonese, export manager for producer Bisol in the Treviso region told Decanter that at least 30% of DOC Prosecco sales were now estimated to be based on illegal wines. Much of the Prosecco found in bars in the region is produced artificially with the addition of C02 and sold on draft from beer kegs. Due to the changes to the Prosecco appellation framework in 2009, growers under the new DOC rules had to reduce their yields and some growers have therefore found it economically difficult adjusting to these more stringent rules, importing grapes from outside the region and selling counterfeit wines under the Prosecco DOC label. The initiative has been pushed by a consortium of prosecco producers. “Above all, it is a measure to protect the consumer,” Stefano Zanette, president of the consortium, told the Telegraph. “Customers have the right to expect that they get what they pay for.” If found guilty of selling non-Prosecco under the DOC name, sellers can be punished with fines of up £17,000 each. Additionally, as Croatia enter the EU, some Italian authorities also fear confusion between the Dalmation wine “prosek” appearing on the shelves alongside Prosecco.

Rome Mounts Exhibition Of Stolen Italian Treasures Now Recovered (Italy Magazine)

Rome- A show at Rome’s Castel Sant’Angelo museum displays stolen Italian artworks, frescoes, artifacts and antiques that have been recovered by the state. Called ‘Capolavori Dell’Archeologia: Recuperi, Ritrovamenti, Confronti’ (Masterpieces of Archaeology: Salvage, Recoveries, Comparisons), the exhibition contains looted, stolen and illegally exported pieces that have been returned to Italy. The show also relates the stories of those who recovered the plundered treasures, sometimes in investigations that took years. The problem of illegally traded art and antiquities is huge. In the past two years, Italy’s Guardia di Finanza police force, has recovered 2,416 paintings and 874,163 archaeological artifacts. Some of the pieces on display have never been on show to the public before. The crowning glory of the exhibition is the Euphronios krater that dates to c. 515 BC. The Ancient Greek terracotta vessel was used to mix wine with water. Experts consider it to be one of the finest Ancient Greek vases in existence. The vase is an example of red-figure pottery, and shows red figures depicting scenes from the Trojan War against a black background. The piece was part of the collection in New York’s Metropolitan Museum until 2008 when it was repatriated to Italy after a legal case that demonstrated it had been smuggled out of Italy illegally.

An easy recipe to enjoy in the comfort of your home

Italiana Easy and delicious recipes BY ALESSANDRA LUNETTA Food writer and blogger, volevofarelochef.it

I

dusted off a classic pasta alla catanese usually prepared in the summer: involtini di spaghetti alla Norma (Norma style spaghetti rolls) a chic variant (more or less) of the most famous Sicilian dish. The name of the recipe comes from an episode in the late 19th century: tells the story that Nino Martoglio, writer, poet and theater director from Catania, exclaimed when he tasted a plate of pasta with fried eggplant, basil, ricotta salata and tomato sauce “Questa è una Norma!” (this is a Norma!) which means a “perfect” recipe (that’s “according to the book”, as perfect as the opera Norma by the catanese musician Vincenzo Bellini taken as comparison). Summertime is the perfect season to make it (not all year round, please! ;) eggplants are fleshy and tasty, tomatoes are juicy and basil adds that flowery and spicy aroma, typical of many Sicilian dishes. An easy recipe that packs all the flavors of catanese food! Amounts may vary – as in many recipes – according to your tastes. Alessandra Lunetta has a bachelor's degree in Italian literature and a master’s in food journalism and is a free-lance journalist and food writer for local Sicilian newspapers, food-guides and magazines. She has a passion for all that involves food; from kitchenware to cookbooks to foods from all over the world. Inspired by fresh, natural and seasonal ingredients, Alessandra shares some of her favorite recipes from around Sicily with the Sigonella community. Try one of these recipes and share it with family and friends. Photos by Alessandra Lunetta

Involtini di spaghetti *alla Norma* – Spaghetti rolls *Norma-style* Ingredients: • • • •

1 and 1/2 Large round egglants 7.1 oz (200g) Spaghetti Tomato sauce (see recipe at right) Fresh basil to taste

• • • •

Ricotta salata cheese to sprinkle Pinch of pepper Pinch of salt Olive oil

Makes about 12 involtini

Directions:

*Prepare the tomato sauce ■ Slice the eggplant - but not too thin. ■ Sprinkle the slices with salt and let drain for about 15-20 min. then rub/pat dry with kitchen paper and fry in plenty hot oil. ■ Cut a few slices into strips and leave the other whole. ■ Cook the spaghetti al dente (about 2 min. before suggested cooking time). ■ Drain and toss spaghetti with the tomato sauce. ■ Drizzle of olive oil. ■ Add the eggplant strips. ■ Place a forkful of pasta on the eggplant slices, roll them up and secure with toothpicks. ■ Arrange the rolls on a baking sheet with non-stick baking paper. ■ Toss with 1 tablespoon of sauce and sprinkle with some ricotta salata. ■ Bake at 190° – 200°C for about 10 minutes or until golden. ■ Sprinkle with chopped basil.

How to make the tomato sauce: • • •

2 pounds ripe tomatoes (1kg) 1 large onion finely chopped 2 garlic cloves

• • •

Fresh basil to taste Pinch of salt Pinch of pepper

Directions:

■ Slice the onion and fry gently with the garlic pieces. ■ Add the diced tomatoes and a lot of basil, salt and pepper. ■ Cook until the tomatoes are tender. ■ Puree the sauce with a hand blender, season with salt and pepper and let it thicken as desired. ■ At the end of cooking add more chopped basil. Special note: ■ Choose a very good quality pasta that mantains the cooking as it will cook also into the oven; I used spaghettoro Verrigni a gold drawn pasta – that I found in a shop some time ago – and the recipe made it absolutely ... a Norma!

Buon appetito!

Notice to the Public

Follow up to possible TB exposure As we continue to monitor the health and welfare of our community, there have been no signs or symptoms of anyone with active tuberculosis (TB). Our preliminary test of the highest risk group was negative. Testing with PPDs was offered this week to all students, faculty, and staff of the Middle/ High School. Seventy-six people were tested and 75 of them followed up for evaluation of their test results today. Seven people in this group had a positive reading of their PPD. A positive PPD does not automatically diagnose an individual as a carrier (latent TB) or infected with tuberculosis. A chest X-ray, physical exam, and review of the medical history is needed following a positive PPD to determine if there is a tuberculosis infection.

ON THE GO WITH MWR Coming soon ...

Those individuals who had positive PPD results have been contacted and will be evaluated by their primary care manager. Any individual who is concerned about possible exposure to tuberculosis is welcome to schedule an appointment with their primary care manager or come into the Emergency Room for evaluation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Symptoms of active tuberculosis may include: development of night sweats, fatigue, persistent cough and weight loss. For further information, please contact the Medical Home Port at 6244622, Preventative Medicine at 624-6230, or the Emergency Department at 624-3844 after hours. The health of the community remains a top priority. We will continue to notify you as more information is available.

MWR invites you to the NAS II Pool Ribbon Cutting! The long wait is over! Several years ago the NAS II swimming pool was drained to install special drain covers to comply with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act. This triggered an onset of problems with the operation of the pool ranging from tiles popping off inside the pool to mechanical issues. Repairs have been made and the interior of the pool has been changed from tile to a PVC liner system. The project also installed solar panels to help defray the costs of heating the pool. For those who have never swam in the pool, it features a 6 lane, 25-meter pool and a separate dive tank with diving boards. Coming soon, there will also be some great updates to the bathhouse and changing area of the facility, so stay tuned! We invite everyone to join us at the renovated pool for a ribbon cutting ceremony on Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. Bring your swimsuit and join us for lap swimming until 1p.m.
