Direct Line
Commanding Officer Capt. Chris Dennis CO Direct Line Buon Weekend Sigonella! It is hard to believe that we are 1/6th of the way through 2014. If you are a kid, this is probably terrific. If you are in the vicinity of my age, maybe you feel differently. Either way, time is speeding by in no small part because of all that is happening within our community. Operationally and recreationally, life in Sigonella is thriving! A big shout out to Sigonella Morale Welfare and Recreation - they have essentially doubled the number of off duty events happening each month, particularly for those living on NAS2. Thank you Team MWR! On the near horizon, and when I say near, I mean ... TODAY, we have the final day of reduced price race registrations for our March 29, Base 2 Base (B2B) Run. The B2B is stroller friendly and registrants can choose from two race course
options, tough and silly tough. Regardless, either the 7.6 mile or half marathon will lead you from NAS2 to NAS1. Both are terrific ways to test your fitness and mental toughness, and demonstrate community pride. Register today in Mid Town from 4-6pm. Otherwise the price spikes to $20 tomorrow and even higher as race day approaches. In other news on the horizon, the Sigonella School will be performing "On Broadway, A Review in Three Acts" March 7 at 7 p.m. and March 8 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. The three acts are scenes from Matilda, West Side Story, and My Fair Lady. Come be entertained with a delightful performance and support Sigonella community theater and our children! Contact sigonellaonbroadway@gmail.com for tickets. Finally and most importantly, today marks the begin-
ning of our Active Duty Fund Drive to support the NavyMarine Corps Relief Society NMCRS has been actively serving Sailors, Marines, dependents and retirees since 1904! Between home nursing visits and infant care, financial education and interest free loans and grants, NMCRS is truly a force multiplier helping Sailors and Marines remain operationally ready in the face of personal challenges. The annual fund drive is the time when we Sigonellans band together and demonstrate our commitment to one another by generously pledging support. Over the past 4 years, from 2010-2013, our local NMCRS provided us with more than a half million dollars of financial support! You read that correctly, > $500,000 (actually very close to $600,000)! That is an amazing amount of local NEED, met locally. So, in the
spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood, I ask all of us to support, whether it be through pledging money, or volunteering to support the drive and educate our community about the programs available at NMCRS, give generously! We have an amazingly generous community, so please Sigonella, continue to demonstrate your generosity by giving back to the organization that gives so much directly to us, Navy Marine Corps Relief Society. Sailors and Airmen stationed at and deployed to Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella welcomed students from a vocational school in Catania, Sicily called Istituto Fermi-Eredia, Feb. 20, for a base tour. The base tour was the first tour held this year and the students are also members of the Italian Association of Seamen. The base held the tour as a special thank you for the students, who have aided NAS Sigonella service members in multiple community relations (COMREL) projects over the past couple of months. “Being both students and members of the seamen association, my students value the selfless service, professionalism and dedication of the American servicemen and take great pride in having learned to lead by example by them in volunteering and giving back to the community,” said Secretary of Italian Seamen Association Giuseppe Conte. The students enthusiastically toured Patrol Squadron (VP) 9’s hangar bay as well as U.S. Air Force’s Global Hawk and Predator hangars bays. At VP-9’s hangar bay, students saw a static display of VP9’s P-3C Orion aircraft and received simulated briefings and missions at the Predator’s hangar bay. “On behalf of the principal, I’d like to thank the U.S. Navy and Air Force for the opportunity to see how a top-notch military force operates,” said Deputy Principal Francesca Santonocito. The students also toured Midtown and the food court on NAS I, and enjoyed a meal at Ristorante Bella Etna galley on NAS II.

Changes to Chapel's Sunday Services Begin March 9th by LT Paul Newell NAS Sigonella Public Affairs Officer
Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella Commanding Officer Capt. Christopher Dennis met with both Catholics and Protestants Sunday to announce upcoming changes to Sunday morning worship services here and fielded questions and concerns from congregants of both faiths. Perhaps the most significant change is the reduction of Catholic Masses from two Sunday services to one. The 11:30 a.m. Sunday Mass on March 9 will be the last of its kind at NAS 2. Meanwhile, the Catholic community will collaborate with Protestant worshipers to determine the new Sunday lineup at the NAS 1 Chapel. Father Franklin Watts -- Catholic priest for NAS Sigonella -- also addressed his congregation to further explain the reason for upcoming changes. "For Catholics, the Sunday Mass time is undecided, but two things are certain," said Watts following the town hall format. "The first is that we know that Sunday Mass at NAS 2 is going to be eliminated. The second is that CCD [Confraternity of Christian Doctrine] for our children and youth will stay at the 10 to 11 a.m. Sunday time slot at the DODDS school." Watts also said he will continue to celebrate Daily Catholic Mass Tuesday through Thursday at

11:30 a.m. at NAS 2 and Friday at NAS 1 at 11:30 a.m. While Capt. Dennis said he understands the frustration some Catholics may feel due to the changes, he hopes all worshipers keep in mind the limitations the base faces in providing religious services. "While I will always advocate for members of all faiths, we are not a community of unlimited resources," Dennis said. "And that is also true when speaking of spiritual opportunities for our people." Dennis also told the Catholic congregation that while he would be willing to speak to Navy policy makers to discuss a return to two masses per Sunday, he would have to field more justification, including a more consistent increase in Sunday attendance. At present, the average attendance for both masses is 170. The chapel seats approximately 300. The new worship service schedule will be made available to the community as soon as a consensus has been reached by the committees. In the meantime, Sunday services at the NAS 1 Chapel will proceed as currently scheduled with Roman Catholic Mass beginning at 8:30 a.m. and the traditional Protestant worship starting at 10:30 a.m. at the NAS 1 Chapel.

Carnival Merry-Making Continues in Sciacca this Weekend
Youthful Matteo Renzi Sworn in as Italy's Prime Minister
Italian Democratic Party leader Matteo Renzi was sworn in as Italy’s youngest prime minister on Feb. 22 after forming a government he says will change the face of the country’s politics and economy. Renzi, the 39-yearold leader of the centre-left Democratic Party, named a low-profile 16-member cabinet with an average age under 48, one of the smallest and youngest in recent Italian history. (Photo provided by CNN) by CNN Matteo Renzi was sworn in last Saturday as Italy's youngest Prime Minister, alongside his new Cabinet of 16 ministers. It's a step many hope will bring much-needed political stability to the country. The former Florence mayor, who won control of the Democratic Party in a primary a couple of months ago, ousted fellow party member Enrico Letta in a party vote last week. Renzi, 39, is nicknamed il Rottomatore -- or "the demolition man" -- for his pugnacious style of politics. After the swearing-in ceremony at the presidential palace, he headed to the Italian Prime Minister's office, the Palazzo Chigi, to hold his first cabinet meeting. The lineup for Renzi's new government was published on his website last Friday. Italy's new Finance Minister is Pier Carlo Padoan, currently deputy secretary-general and chief economist of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Serving Interior Minister Angelino Alfano, of the Nouvo Centro Destra party, keeps his job in the new government. Half of Renzi's ministers are women, the largest proportion in Italian history. Most of the ministers are young by Italian standards, with an average age of 48. Letta held on to the top job in Italian politics for less than a year.
He was sworn in last April at the head of a coalition government formed after months of uncertainty following inconclusive elections. But he was forced out last week amid frustration over the slow pace of reform. Italy, the third largest economy in the eurozone, has had more than its share of political turmoil over recent years. As reported by Telecomparer.com, Renzi has laid out an ambitious agenda for his first months in office, promising a sweeping overhaul of the electoral and constitutional system to give Italy more stable governments in future, and reforms to the labor and tax systems as well as the bloated public administration. However, the coalition with the centre-right NCD party, on which he will depend for a majority, remains unchanged from the one which hampered his predecessor Enrico Letta’s efforts at reform. Renzi, the mayor of Florence since 2009, rose to power after winning leadership of the Democratic Party in December. He effectively forced his fellow Democrat Enrico Letta to step down as prime minister after 10 months at the helm of a fragile coalition. Like his predecessor, Renzi also lacks a national mandate from voters, even though opinion polls suggest he has broad support among the electorate. After being sworn in by President Giorgio Napolitano,
the new prime minister said he hoped that the government would last through to the end of the current parliament in 2018. “My word is more important than my career,” said Renzi. “We are risking everything, but we’re doing it with determination, love for Italy and the conviction that this country has a period of beauty and enthusiasm ahead.” The last election to produce a leader was in 2008, when Silvio Berlusconi became Prime Minister for a third time. Since then, all the country's leaders have been appointed. Berlusconi, a billionaire tycoon who has dominated Italian politics for two decades, resigned in late 2011 after coming under pressure for Italy's economic woes. He was subsequently expelled from parliament after his conviction for tax fraud and can no longer run for office. Independent.co.uk reported that commentators noted that there were no big names capable of challenging the authority of the new leader, who came to power after ousting fellow Democrat Enrico Letta, to the anger of many in their party, meaning that Mr. Renzi will also face the bulk of criticism if reforms are not forthcoming swiftly. While there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel following the country's worst economic crisis of the modern era, with signs of growth appearing, Mr. Renzi thrust aside Mr. Letta over the slow pace of economic reforms. "Renzi seems to be betting everything on himself, on his political energy," an editorial in La Repubblica newspaper said. "The acrobat is on the high wire, alone and without a safety net. "Let's hope he manages, otherwise the only thing that remains are the populist clowns." The anti-establishment Five Star Movement, led by former comedian Beppe Grillo, is seen as a possible successor if Mr Renzi's government collapses. "The responsibility is enormous and this must not fail," Rocco Palombella, secretary general of the UILM union, said.

H EADLINES Medieval Mass Grave Found in Florence
(Photo provided by http://www.agrigentotg24.it) The dazzling “Carnevale di Sciacca” (Sciacca Carnival) Cone of the most ancient merrymaking festivals in the island continues throughout this weekend in this picturesque ancient coastal town in the Agrigento province. Sciacca is mainly famous for its thermal baths, but also for its anchovy and sardine industry and ceramic and coral craftsmanship. Sicilian clergyman Mario Ciaccio was the first historian to describe the Carnival of Sciacca in 1890. However, historic sources tell us that the carnival has been actually celebrated since the 17th century. At the beginning, Sciacca’s Carnival was mainly a celebration of country life with food and wine. Peasants, fishermen and herdsmen with painted faces and funny hats, played pranks and exchanged insults, played role reversals and made political satire. This was called “lu gabbu” (the mockery). Nobody was offended because that was what carnival was all about. The grand finale for the celebrations was the burning of “lu Nannu,” (today named “Peppi ‘Nnappa”) a straw dummy who represented the manifested spirit of carnival. Doing so, bad luck and sins were burned away, leaving the town pure and filled with hope for good things to come. Today, the allegorical “Carri” or floats are the highlights of the celebrations. Associations including amateur musicians, ceramists, costume designers, poets, craftsmen and decorators begin creating these majestic parading papier-mâché floats after the summer. At the end of every working day around midnight, everyone who is involved in building a float gathers for the “Schiticchio (dinner among friends). This is an important social moment as it enhances group cohesion. The “carri allegorici” (allegorical floats) depict political and social satire. Ballets and performances are held during the parades. In Sciacca, food is always a big deal and especially at carnival. Traditional foods and dolci (sweets) associated with Carnevale include “cucchitelle” (cookies made with pumpkin and covered with frosting), cannoli , chiacchere, (irregularly shaped pieces of dough, fried and dusted with powdered sugar) “Maccaruna di zitu” (maccheroni pasta with pork ragu sauce) and “pasta con le sarde” (pasta with sardines) among others. During the festival, stands selling typical carnival food are open all day long in the historic center.
Float Parade's Schedule
Here are some of the must-see events of this year’s carnival. Amazing parades of dazzling masqueraded groups and allegoric floats will be held tomorrow (March 1) in the towns’ historic heart (via Cappuccini, piazza Belvedere, via Friscia Maglienti, via Incisa and piazza Mariano Rossi) at 3:30 p.m. An afternoon parade will also be held on Sunday, March 2 at 2:30 p.m. and March 3 and 4 at 3:30 p.m. Music shows, parades and entertainment will be held every night at 9 p.m. On the last day of carnival, March 4 celebrations come to a spectacular symbolic end around 2 a.m. (March 5) with the burning of the “Peppi ‘Nnappa” puppet in the historic center. Sciacca is about two hours and half from Catania. It is fairly easy to reach. Exit Caltanissetta on the CataniaPalermo highway. Take the Agrigento-Caltanissetta national road. Once you get to Agrigento. Take the Agrigento-Sciacca and follow directions for Sciacca. For more information and detailed schedules, visit http:// www.sciaccarnevale.it

(http://www.digitaljournal.com) Dozens of skeletons have been found close to the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, and, according to archaeologists the medieval mass grave may stretch underneath the renowned museum. The skeletons were found by workmen during digging to build an elevator in an area designed to house an expanded section of the Uffizi's exhibit space. Initial examination of the remains shows that the skeletons belong to more than 60 individuals of various ages and sex who probably succumbed to a devastating epidemic. According to the archaeologists, who have worked at the site for the past five months, the position and the way the bodies were laid in the graves, indicate an emergency situation. Carlotta Cianferoni, director of Florence's National Archaeological Museum, told Discovery News: "It appears they all died at the same time. Multiple graves contain up to 10 bodies, certainly buried in a hurry. Within the graves we also found some coins, all dating between the end of the 4th and the beginning of the 5th century A.D." Discussing the coins, Cianferoni added: "The coins provide a rather accurate temporal reference, but of course we need to wait the results of the anthropological analysis and radiocarbon dating." The Uffizi Gallery is a museum in Florence, Italy. It is one of the oldest and most famous art museums of the Western world. In high season (particularly in July), waiting times can be up to five hours.
Anger in Italy Over a Chain of MafiaThemed Restaurants in Spain (Telegraph.co.uk) Rome It may be a harmless marketing gimmick for their founders, but a chain of themed mafia restaurants in Spain has infuriated Italians, with politicians calling for a name change The chain of 34 “La Mafia” restaurants, dotted around Spain, offer a dining experience inspired by the mob, with pizza and pasta served beneath posters showing scenes from The Godfather and customers sitting on benches emblazoned with images of Al Capone and Lucky Luciano. Regular diners can join a “Mafia Fidelity Club”, which offers a five per cent discount on meals and the chance to enter a draw to win prizes such as iPads and weekends away. The chain has enjoyed huge success and there are plans to open another 15 restaurants, including one across the border in Portugal. But Italians – who on a daily basis have to endure the Camorra dumping and burning toxic waste in the countryside around Naples, the ‘Ndrangheta of Calabria importing vast quantities of cocaine from South America and Cosa Nostra extorting protection money from businesses in Sicily – failed
to see the funny side of the concept. The first La Mafia restaurant was opened back in 2000 but the existence of the chain was only publicized in Italy this week with a feature story in La Repubblica newspaper. “Imagine what would happen in Spain if somebody in Italy opened restaurants dedicated to the terrorists of [Basque separatist group] ETA”, commented the paper. Giuseppe Lumia, a senator from the centreLeft Democratic Party and a member of the parliamentary anti-mafia commission, said: “To use the word mafia in a commercial brand is squalid and unacceptable. It’s an offence to all those people who have given their lives in the defense of legality and justice.” He said he would lobby the Italian government and the ministry of foreign affairs to put pressure on the Spanish to change the name of the restaurants. The restaurants were “gravely offensive to our national image and to all those who have paid with their lives in the battle against mafia clans,” two other Centre-Left senators, Laura Cantini and Mario Morgoni, said in a statement. But Pablo Martinez, a spokesman for La Mafia Franchises, the firm behind the restaurants, told La Repubblica: “I apologize to any Italians who feel offended but it was really not our intention. There are no violent images in our restaurants. Mafia is a word that attracts attention.”
American Student Found Dead in Rome (TL) Rome A 21-year-old American student has been found dead in Rome after a night out with friends, after reportedly being hit by a train. John Durkin went missing in the early hours of Friday morning in central Rome’s Campo de Fiori neighborhood. His body was found a day later by Italian authorities, the US embassy in Rome said in a statement. Durkin died after being hit by a train between the San Pietro and Trastevere stations to the west of the Tiber River, Italian media reported. An economics student at Bates College in the north-eastern US state of Maine, Durkin was in Rome as part of an exchange program through Trinity College in Connecticut, a state north-east of New York city. Durkin was one of 55 American students taking part in the Rome program, along with five others from Bates. He was described by Trinity President James F. Jones as “an exemplary young man and a student-athlete in the truest sense of the word.” Mark Harriman, Durkin’s football coach at Bates, said Durkin’s “commitment to excellence in all phases of his life was inspirational to the other members of the squad.” In a brief statement the student’s family thanked “everyone for their support during these past few days.”

arcelona has a lot to offer! You could spend weeks visiting and never run out of sights to see and things to do. But it’s also a city that, with a bit of planning, can be the perfect getaway for a four-day weekend. That’s exactly what my husband, Tony, and I did for this most recent President’s Day weekend. About two weeks before the holiday, we realized that we had a great travel opportunity – a command wide four-day weekend boasting free leave days! We hopped onto the computer and did a quick search for cheap flights from Catania to any of the major cities on our bucket list and ended up with two tickets Friday morning to Barcelona! We packed everything we needed into one backpack and one rolling suitcase so we could skip checking our bags and giving the airlines a chance to lose them. Our flight from
Catania took us to Rome Fiumicino, where we had a sixhour long layover before getting on our flight, to beautiful Barcelona. It was around 6 p.m. when we were flying over the coast of Spain and noticing some of the landmarks we had read about in the travel guide. We saw the Tower Agbar, the Olympic Stadiums and the stunning beaches. The city looked so beautiful lit up in an orange hue just before sunset. Once we landed, we found our way through airport security. Outside of the sliding doors, there was an official FC Barcelona futbol outlet, where we bought two tickets to the match taking place over the weekend. Before we landed we read the bus was the easiest and cheapest way to get down town. There was one leaving every 5 to 10 minutes and signs pointing the entire way. At
only €10.20 for a round trip ticket, it was a deal. The return ticket is good for up to 15 days. If we had more people or luggage a taxi might have been worth it, but this was the perfect method for two adults with two small bags. The bus trip took around 30 minutes to get us to Plaza Catalunya. The plaza is at the top of a street known as Las Ramblas, which is the center of town and a great place to start exploring. Before our trip, we booked an apartment just two blocks away from Plaza Catalunya. The landlord, a sweet middleaged Spanish woman named Maria, met us at the apartment. She gave us a quick tour of the apartment and handed us the keys for the weekend. We dropped off our bags, grabbed the cameras and immediately started wandering the streets. Our first night out, we rambled along Las Ramblas,

grabbed some tapas at the local bar and did some shopping at a produce market. At the end of the night on the way back to the apartment, we noticed the scent of hot, fresh waffles. The kiosk was selling waffles, crepes, and ice cream. You could get any mix of the three together. It was a little messy as the hot waffle melted the ice cream, but delicious nonetheless. The second day, we explored massive medieval churches and reveled in the architecture of the gothic period and designs by the great Gaudi. All of Barcelona is very bike friendly and sprinkled with bike rental shops that offer full day rentals for as little as €12. The city also boasts several bike lanes and pedestrian only areas that make it very safe to ride or walk in leisure. When we were ready to stop, we used the provided locks to secure the bikes and found a nearby tapas restaurant to satisfy our hunger. The tapas restaurants are really just a place to try a wide variety of appetizers. I recommend trying a sampling of several types of available food. Most menus were in English and offered seafood, chorizo, fried foods and other small plates to ensure you get the full Spanish experience. The Spanish prefer the cool night hours to the hot midday sun. As a result, many of the local restaurants in the city don’t open until 9 p.m. and stay busy until 3 a.m. or later. I recommend downloading an app for your smart phone that uses its GPS to find nearby restaurants and their hours. The second night we were there, we attended the FC Barcelona futbol (soccer) match. Tickets priced at €26 each put us about six rows from the top of the stadium. You could see the whole field without a problem and I was easily swept up in the energy of the crowd as Barça (as they’re known) scored 6 goals against their unfortunate opponents, Rayo Vallecano. On the third and final full day in Barcelona, we hopped on our bikes and just rode around with no real destination. We found their main cathedral around noon, where a group of musicians were playing classic Catalan music while locals performed the traditional Sardana circle dance. It was quite a sight. Even though we were supposed to enjoy the local culture in Spain, when I saw Starbucks, I couldn’t help but getting a taste of good ol’ American coffee. Most of our fourth day was just heading home. We packed our bags, left a thank you note to Maria and hopped on the bus back to the airport to catch our flight. Everything in Barcelona was very convenient and enjoyable. I’m already thinking of a trip back next summer when I can enjoy their beautiful beaches. On our way home from Barcelona, I was pleasantly surprised to see many sailors and families on our flight. It made me happy to know that so many other people are making the most of their overseas experience by cashing in on these free blocks of leave days to travel around Europe and spend time with family and friends! I hope you enjoyed the tale of my excursion. If you have any questions about Barcelona, or have a recommendation for my next destination, feel free to send me an e-mail: Photo@LyndsayCurtis.com Grazie! Gracias!

Hospital Overhauls Patient Nutrition Plan

by HM2 matthew clutter U.S. Naval Hospital Sigonella The patient care rendered at U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Sigonella received an improvement recently, as the food being served to patients underwent a massive overhaul. Driven by patient feedback, the menu was updated to reflect current standards of inpatient menus and special diets to improve the overall nutrition value and quality. To meet these standards, the hospital upgraded its galley by installing a new four-burner cook top and purchasing new cooking utensils and equipment. “This endeavor was truly a collaborative effort between Operations Management, Nutritional Management and the Multi-Service Ward and their staff,” said Lt. Cmdr. Theresa Devitt-Lynch, Director for Administration at USNH Sigonella. The new menu plan will give patients options, in addition to aesthetic improvements like serving food on plates instead of trays. “The new menu plan will have options of a hot or cold preference,” said Lt. Sherrill Hockenberry, Head of Operations Management. “It will allow the patients to have some type of control over their nutritional preferences and give them a say in how their meals are prepared.” Cmdr. Andrea Desanto, department head of the multi-service ward and Lt. Christina Bologna, the hospital’s dietitian, were responsible for the menu overhaul, creating a three-day menu plan that would be offered to patients who are hospitalized in the Multi-Service Ward or Emergency Department. To offer healthier and more nutritious options, the two
collaborated to determine which types of menus would be required based on the primary nutritional needs of patients commonly admitted to USNH Sigonella. Lt. Bologna also partnered with Lt. Hockenberry in providing the Culinary Specialist (CS) staff initial training on patient menu concepts and food preparation in order to acclimate them to hospital-based, patient-centered nutritional care. In addition to this initial training, all CS staff members now attend monthly inrate training at the NAS II galley to maintain their culinary skills and knowledge. “Without the dedicated leadership of these departments and the CS staff to improve the quality of patient care through the nutritional program, this menu would not have reached the quality it has,” said Devitt-Lynch. The CS staff debuted the new patient menu to the commanding officer, executive officer, and command master chief at a special tasting to celebrate this occasion. The Sigonella Nurses Association, in conjunction with USNH Sigonella's MWR, Wardroom, Chief ’s Association and the First Class Petty Officers Association, sponsored the Galley Rededication Ribbon Cutting on Feb. 4, in front of the galley. Not only did the ribbon cutting signify a change in patient nutritional services, it also provided the staff an opportunity to experience the CS staff ’s skills as they provided samplings of the new patient menu.

The Military Postal address system is currently undergoing changes, which began on Jan. 15. In accordance with the United States Postal Service (USPS) and the Military Postal Service Agency (MPSA), all overseas Military Post Offices will convert to the new standardized address system. Currently, all incoming mail is manually sorted by USPS before being routed for delivery overseas. The new address system provides automated mail sorting for quicker processing and additional automated features that will improve mail service to authorized mail patrons. The Jan. 15 address change will identify a unique individual box number and incorporate use of a nine digit zip code, ZIP +4. This automated address system will expedite the “change of address” process in the future, reduce cost to military postal system, and improve service to military personnel. The implementation of address standardization will require most of the same procedures that would come with a physical move and change of address. While you won’t have to go to USPS and submit a change of address form, you will have to update your bank accounts and personal mailing accounts, e.g. online shopping accounts and magazine subscriptions as well as informing family and friends of your new address in order for your mail to arrive on time and not be returned to sender. The cooperation of the entire NASSIG community is vital to the success of this address change program—and the postal directors appreciate all of your continued support in this endeavor. Any questions can be directed to command mail orderlies or emailed to the address standardization help desk at: FLCSIzipplus4@eu.navy.mil
