A

normal night at Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella turned dark and wicked when the Sigonella Community & Spouse Club (SCSC) hosted a Murder/ Mystery Costume Party Oct. 5, in the Chart Room on NAS I. The event was the third of its kind. According to SCSC President Krista Martinez, the event has grown since it began almost two years ago. More than 30 people participated in the event, including the SCSC members who acted as suspects. “We changed it up a little bit from what a normal live action murder/mystery does where they have more people interacting in scenes," said Martinez.

"What we do is interact with the people.” The event began with dinner, giving attendees the opportunity to mingle. During dinner, a scream alerted guests that a "murder" had occurred at which time everyone was instructed to open their clue bag, which provided the story of the "victim" and clues to how his body was discovered. Participants were also offered a clue book to keep notes on what the suspects told them about their whereabouts during the murder as well as past relationships with the victim and other suspects. "It’s up to [the guests] to figure out what direction to take and what questions to ask the suspects,” said Martinez.

Once the investigation part of the night ended, guests wrote down their suspect and submitted their accusation. “Everybody really got to get into it," Martinez said. "The characters were having fun making up stuff as well as going off of what they had; ad-libbing was great!” Participants that guessed correctly won prizes, which included certificates for personal training and massage sessions. Once the winners claimed their prizes, the remaining items were raffled off. The SCSC holds a Murder/ Mystery event twice a year. Future events planned by the SCSC include a Holiday Gift Fair in November and Breakfast with

Santa in December. The group will also be hosting Bunko games every third Friday of the month in the Chart Room and will have a booth at the upcoming Autumn Fest event hosted by Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR). The SCSC welcomes all community members to become a part of the club as a member or participant in future events. "The SCSC is here for everybody in the community,”

Martinez said. “We’re not just a spouse club. We’re literally active duty, Department of Defense, civilian, and the whole works. We want to give back to the community and still have a great time!” THE SIGONELLA COMMUNITY & SPOUSE CLUB (SCSC) IS A NON-FEDERAL ENTITY. Command Master Chief David Graham

Buongiorno Sigonella! This Sunday is the 238th birthday of the U.S. Navy and I want to talk a little about our traditions. On Oct. 13, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the procurement, outfitting, manning and dispatch of two armed vessels to ensure that British ships did not supply munitions to the British Army in America. During the Revolutionary War, America’s young Navy grew to include 50 ships with up to 20 comprising the active fleet. More than 200 years later, we’re still defending freedom at home and abroad. We will be celebrating the Navy’s birthday next Friday, Oct. 18 at Romano Palace. The Navy Ball Committee and its volunteers have been busy raising funds for this year’s event in an effort to lower the price for tickets, enabling more folks to come out and enjoy an evening

of fun, food, and heritage. For ticket information, contact your Navy Ball representative. And if you’re in tune with social media, share some of your tweets or images using the Navy’s official birthday hashtag: #USNavyBDay - in good taste of course. Enjoy the change in seasons by bringing your friends and family to NAS I for the 23rd Annual Autumn Fest Celebration Oct. 25 and 26. There are events for everyone including Sig’s Got Talent, a zombie run, and live bands. And for the kids, a Trick-or-Treat Lane, carnival rides, and more. I hope to see you there. Onto a couple of serious topics, I’m sure we’re all feeling the effects of the government shutdown to some degree. On Sept. 30, President Obama signed the “Pay our Military” Act, ensuring all service members will be

paid at the appropriate time. However, you still need to have proper financial planning intact. Ask yourself, “If my paycheck would have been delayed, would I have been ready?” Talk to your command financial specialist to set up a plan and savings goals. If you are in need of financial help, you can also contact the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. I also want to talk about bystander intervention. I charge each and every service member, family member and employee with the responsibility to be actively observant and assist those in need when possible. This doesn’t just apply when talking about sexual assault, but any time you observe someone doing something that doesn’t uphold our Core Values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Here are some tips for intervening: approach everyone as a

friend, do not be antagonistic, avoid using violence, be honest and direct whenever possible, recruit help if necessary, and keep yourself safe. If things get out of hand or become too serious, contact base security. Again, I hope to see all of you at the Navy Ball and also at Autumn Fest. Hooyah, Sigonella!

Boy Scout Troop 53 beautifies area in Acireale, Oct. 5. (Photo by Cmdr. Mike Adriano) BY CMDR. Mike adriano Troop 53 Scoutmaster Boy Scout Troop 53 of Naval Air Station Sigonella gathered at Saint Camillo’s food kitchen in Acireale for a service project, Oct. 5. It is not uncommon for a Boy Scout troop to do service projects, but this one was special. After almost five years of work toward the rank, prospective Eagle Scout Gabriel Adriano organized this outing to showcase his ability to conceive a service project, gather people and resources to complete the task and execute the project for the good of the community. His project was to sand and paint a sizable metal railing and stairway, and paint a storage room. The Boy Scouts completed these tasks and went further by helping feed the poor, clean a kitchen and dining area and common courtyard of the facility. In the end, the boys of Boy Scout Troop 53 benefited as much as Saint Camillo’s by learning how much good can come from a day of service to the community. BOY SCOUT TROOP 53 IS A NON-FEDERAL ENTITY. IT IS NOT A PART OF THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE OR ANY OF ITS COMPONENTS AND IT HAS NO GOVERNMENTAL STATUS.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month Domestic Violence / Intimate Partner Abuse thrives in a culture of shame and silence, and there are significant costs to both the victim and the community associated with remaining silent. If you see someone being abused, don’t ignore it – but don’t get physically involved, call Law Enforcement, USN Family Advocacy Services, or a Military Command Representative. Also, inform the victim that USN Family Advocacy Services are available to support both the victim and their family members. The victim may not want to use these services right away, but knowing what resources are available gives them options to act. There are three types of abuse – Physical, Emotional, and Sexual. The following are some indicators abuse. • The victim has been physically hurt or threaten by their partner. • The partner has hurt the victim's pets, or destroyed clothing, objects, or something special to the victim. • The partner has abused, or threaten to abuse, their children. • The partner has forced the victim to have sex when he/she did not want to, or forced him/ her to engage in sex that makes them feel uncomfortable. • The partner has isolated the victim by preventing the victim from leaving the house, seeing friends, getting a job, or interacting with others. • The partner has threatened to use a weapon against the victim. • The partner constantly criticize the victim, calling names, humiliating him/her, or other used other forms of psychological abuse. • The partner has unrealistic jealousy and has stalked or controled the victim. If you are a victim of domestic abuse, contact your installation's FAP Representative, Kevin Callan LCSW at DSN 624-3199 or commercial 09556-3199, or contact the National Domestic Abuse Hotline (800-799-SAFE [7233]). DOMESTIC VIOLENCE REPORTING OPTIONS Victims of domestic / intimate partner abuse are often afraid to get help. They may fear that reporting the abuse will only make things worse, or they may feel ashamed for tolerating the abuse for so long. Victims may fear losing the financial support provided by their abuser, including housing or medical benefits. Some victims may feel trapped because they fear ruining their spouse’s military career or feel pressure to keep the relationship

Need an appointment at the hospital? Call DSN 624-CARE (2273) or commercial 095-56-2273, M-F: 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. For non-emergent medical questions that arise over the weekend, holidays, or after office hours, please call 335-578-8077 if you are normally seen at the hospital or 335-578-8150 if you are normally seen at the Flight Line Clinic.

intact for the sake of the children. The Department of Defense is committed to addressing and ending domestic abuse and offers victims two different reporting options for seeking help. With either option, victims have access to victim advocacy services, counseling, and medical care. Victims of domestic abuse may want to talk to a Family Advocacy Program Representative / clinician about their options and other sources of support before making a decision. RESTRICTED REPORTING Victims who prefer confidential assistance that does not include notification of law enforcement or military command may contact a FAP representative /clinician or a healthcare provider to request a restricted report. A restricted report allows victims to evaluate their relationship choices while maintaining control over what and how much information to share with others. Because victim safety is a priority, victims at imminent risk of serious harm cannot use the restricted report option. A restricted report is also not available in cases where child abuse has occurred. A victim of domestic abuse who makes a restricted report may receive victim Family advocacy services without law enforcement notification or command involvement. Victim advocacy services include help developing a safety plan to prevent further abuse, referral to counseling, medical care, information about Military Protective Orders and information about military and local civilian community resources. UNRESTRICTED REPORTING Victims may contact the FAP, military police, or chain of command to make an unrestricted report if they want an investigation of an abuse incident and command involvement. The command can offer the victim added support and protection. An unrestricted report also gives the command the discretion to take administrative action against the offender. For victims who choose to make an unrestricted report, a FAP Representative will also assist victims in making a report to law enforcement, provide information on legal rights and offer assistance in applying for Transitional Compensation, if applicable. The choices in an abusive relationship are never easy. But, knowing that there are options for seeking help is the first step in ending abuse and having a safer and happier life. If you are a victim of domestic abuse, contact your installation's FAP Representative, Kevin Callan LCSW at DSN 624-3199 or commercial 095-56-3199, or contact the National Domestic Abuse Hotline (800-799-SAFE [7233]).

HEADLINES Fall Festival in Floresta

The Ottobrando fall festival, which has been named one of the top festivals in the Messina province, is held every Sunday in October and features food, arts and crafts, entertainment and children's activities. (Photo by Alberto Barbagallo)

O

ttobrando autumn festival is in full swing in Floresta, a picturesque hilltop town in the Messina province. Every year, this fall celebration attracts large crowds of shoppers and gourmands from all over the island who come to enjoy the beauty of the Nebrodi national park. On Sunday, Oct. 13 the festival will celebrate the suino nero or black swine. Mushrooms will be king at the Oct. 20 festival and chestnuts and apples will be celebrated Oct. 27. The festival is set up via Umberto I from 9 a.m. through 10 p.m. Festival goers will find terrific deals and mouthwatering food and crafts at the festival booths, which sell local produce including the famous Provola di Floresta cheese, mushrooms, chestnuts, ricotta cheese, hazelnuts, grilled castrato (mutton) etc. For more information, detailed schedules and directions visit http:// www.comunefloresta.me.it The Town and its History: Floresta is the highest Sicilian town, beautifully located 1,275 meters above sea level and set in the majestic scenery on spurs of the Oriental Nebrodi. Bordering Catania province, it is situated on a watershed between the upper valleys of the Alcantara River (a tributary of the Ionian Sea) and the Naso stream (a tributary of the Tyrrhenian Sea) in a natural saddle between Mount Pistone (1,261 m) to the south-west and the Serra Baratta (1,395 m) to the north-east. Floresta is characterized by the breathtaking beauty of its unspoilt natural surroundings; immersed in a magic atmosphere of exceptional health where the gaze gets lost on infinite horizons - lush forests stretching as far as the eye can see. With such unique characteristics, it is not surprising that Floresta strongly values the production of timber along with the raising of cattle and sheep, which represent the main source of income for the town together with the traditional manufacture of dairy products such as fresh ricotta cheese, the famous provola and the characteristic cavaddùzzi, shaped like small horses by skilled local cheesemakers. Floresta, a toponym, known for a long time as Casal Floresta, seems to date back to when the Romans invaded and colonized Sicily; a time when the area was originally dense forest (floresta in Latin), with tall trees used by the Romans for building their ships and boats. According to a local belief Casal Floresta was in fact founded by a small group of bandits and fugitives in the XVII century, who, while escaping Spanish police forces stationed in Sicily, hid in Floresta’s dense woods; where they were able to survive, and self-sufficient, started a community of refugees in the place that today we call the Fortress of San Giorgio about one kilometre from the town centre. So, although Floresta is quite a new town, with somewhat uncertain origins, its history has in fact

been carefully reconstructed by a detailed study of the old, dusty parish and notary archives. The colonization of Sicily by Rome began in 264 B.C. by Appio Claudio, who elected Floresta as a place to send Roman exiles. At that time, it was a settlement mainly of people sentenced to long prison terms and of slaves, who lived there with their guards in rudimentary buildings. The homing point for shepherds and herdsmen from late spring to autumn, Floresta, a kilometer away from the Fortress of San Giorgio, consisted of a small group of cùbburi ( from Latin cùbitus, i.e. bed, essentially traditional, semicircular dry-stone shelters covered with boughs and slabs of stone with a hole in the centre to heat the hut and to allow the smoke out). It is still possible to see the cùbburi among the leaves in the woodland. At the beginning of the fourteenth century, with the ever numerous migrations in search of arable land into the marginal areas (as a result of the natural growth of the population at this time), Floresta was

Ligurian village welcomes first baby in 67 years claimed by Frederick III of Aragon, named the second king of Sicily, and given as a fief, to the nobleman Peregrino De Pactis, executive master and notary of the kingdom. In the following centuries, after a series of dote acts, the fiefdom of Floresta passed to the Spanish nobleman Antonio Quintana Duegnas who, thanks to the privilege granted by Philip III (son of Philip II of Spain, first king of Sicily), named king of Spain in 1598 and proclaimed second king of Sicily in 1619, was made "Marquis of the Forest of San Giorgio and Grassetta” on the 11th of Jan. 1619. In 1675, the administration of the fief of Floresta, passed to the Prince Paolo Ardoino (grandson of Melchior), then to Michele Ardoino and later to Pietro Ardoino, whose descendants remained there until the middle of the eighteenth century. Vincenzo Moncada of Alcontres followed in 1762, Giuseppe Ardoino Stagno in 1790, Pietro Stagno Asmundo of Alcontres in 1809, and finally the Baron Baratta in 1810, who looked after Floresta until 1812, the year when the new Bourbon constitution put an end to feudal privileges. In 1820, the small community of Floresta became an independent town and, later, in 1838, the Municipal treasury instituted entirely at their own expense the charitable foundation of Mount Agrario, which soon brought great benefits during the harsh winters. The Monte Agrario showed immediately its strong beneficial charity, in fact, during the cold winters it lent or ever gave some wheat for free to Floresta people in need. The wheat lent would then be given back to Monte Agrario by paying, after the next harvest , “in kind " and including a small pecuniary interest in order to preserve both the economic and the cereals patrimony of the foundation; the interest would be anyway proportional to the financial possibilities of the people. The harsh living conditions of Floresta became much more pronounced in the late nineteenth century and the beginning of 1900, when, especially during stiff winters, an asphyxiated economy caused by the severe economic crisis (mainly in agriculture) affecting the whole of Italy, caused in Sicily the abandonment of land and their allocation to permanent pasture, making even more difficult the already precarious survival of the inhabitants, many of whom migrated in search of better opportunities in distant lands. Currently, thanks to better roads, increased mobility has brought new opportunities for Floresta. Comprised of the Nebrodi Park and Alcantara River Park , Floresta has chosen to make the most of its natural resources by proposing a tourism development strategy (much appreciated by those who love winter sports, hiking or trekking on horseback). With the renewed interest in the affirmation of an "ecological consciousness," more and more human beings are being driven to search for authentic values and a life closer to nature.

(IM) For the first time after 67 years, the little village of Lissa in Liguria has welcomed a new baby, bringing its population to a total of six people. Baby Francesco was born on Sept. 24 and is the son of Michele and Sabrina Isella, who moved to Lissa from the Lecco area five years ago, after falling in love with the nature of the place. “We didn’t want to start a family in an urban, industrial area and when we discovered this place we decided to change our lives and move here,” Sabrina said. Sabrina teaches middle school in nearby Varese Ligure on a temp contract, while Francesco, a textile worker currently unemployed, spends the day doing manual work, like tending to their vegetable garden and chopping wood. "We don't have any problems," they say. Lissa residents, who have seen their population decline drastically in recent decades, welcomed the new arrival as a sign of hope.

Lampedusa victims feared to be 300, 250 certified dead, rough seas hamper recovery of bodies (ANSA) - Lampedusa - The number of victims from a migrant-boat disaster off Lampedusa Thursday is feared to be as high as 300, rescuers said Friday. About half are women and there are "many" children, they said. Interior Minister Angelino Alfano said 250 bodies were in the island's morgue and the rough seas made operations to recover bodies difficult. The boat carrying some 500 Somali and Eritrean asylum seekers caught fire and sank after migrants lit a blanket in an SOS bid. The disaster has spurred fresh calls to change Italy's immigration law. Some have urged opening a humanitarian corridor to Italy and others have said migrant trafficking must be stopped on the African coast. All have said Europe should give Italy more help, which will be discussed by EU ministers last Tuesday.

Divers scouring the site of the Costa Concordia wreck off the coast of Italy have recovered what could be more human remains, officials say (BBC News) It comes days after Italy's civil protection agency said it had found remains that could belong to the last two missing victims of the disaster. All the remains have been sent for DNA testing. The cruise ship ran aground and partially sank off Giglio Island last year with the loss of 32 lives. It was raised upright last month in a major salvage operation. "Other remains have also been found and are currently undergoing DNA tests," the agency's chief Franco Gabrielli told reporters last Wednesday. "We are waiting for the results of the analysis," he added. The ship's captain, Francesco Schettino, is on trial

Nutella? It's got your name on it (TL) Following successful campaigns by Coca Cola and Heineken, Italy's popular Nutella label is offering chocolate lovers the chance to buy their favorite product with their name on the label. The brand, produced by the conglomerate Ferrero, will offer buyers a label with their name that can be attached to either 400 or 750 gram jars. The new initiative - called “Nutella sei tu”, or “You are Nutella” - has already been successfully tested in Spain, France and Belgium. Thousands of labels were made available in Spain over a two-week period and supplies ran out in two hours. The company has also released an advertising campaign with the theme, “Buongiorno has a new name : You!” and is backed with a social media campaign using Facebook to reinforce relations between the company and consumers. According to Italian media the company has had great success with promotions like World Nutella Day and now has 40,000 fans on Facebook and several thousand followers on Twitter.

Arrosticini Festival attacked by vegan group (IM) A local food festival celebrating arrosticini was disrupted last weekend when a vegan group attacked the festival setup staining tents with indelible paint and chopping off electrical cables. It happened in the small town of Sassi, near Torino, the night before the three-day "Festa della Famiglia Abruzzese e Molisana" was slated to begin in Piazza Giovanni delle Bande Nere. Despite the damage, the festival still went on as scheduled and was a success, attracting 8,000 people, while 20,000 arrosticini were distributed. Arrosticini is a typical Abruzzese dish: mutton meat cooked on a spit. The vegan group signed the attack with the slogan “Veganismo e Giustizia” (Veganism and Justice). It also used the acronym ALF, which stands for Animal Liberation Front, while one message was directed to the festival attendees: “Mangia cadaveri” (eaters of corpses). Due to the incident, carabinieri were called to watch out for other possible attacks, although things progressed smoothly. Carlo Di Giambattista, president of the association "Famiglia Abruzzese Molisana del Piemonte", said: “I accept different opinions. I personally don’t eat red meat and I sometimes eat at vegan restaurants. But I can’t accept this form of protest, because it reminds me of other protests resulting in violence.”

ince departing in May for a sixmonth deployment, the Golden Swordsmen of Patrol Squadron VP-47 have made community relation (COMREL) events a focused part of their service. These COMREL events highlight the squadron’s dedication to helping the host nation communities while advancing multi-national cooperation and understanding. Regularly deployed to Sicily, Djibouti and El Salvador, the squadron has also supported detachments to Spain, United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Greece. At each turn the Golden Swordsmen have taken time from their busy flight schedule and high operational tempo to interact

with local communities. “A lot of the time military members talk about what they do for their country, which is great, but I like to think about what we do for humanity as a whole,” said Yeoman 2nd Class Toni Gonzalez. The Golden Swordsmen have devoted countless man hours to the many COMREL projects they have undertaken such as painting a kindergarten’s playground in Bulgaria, lawn and garden maintenance and upkeep at the Instituto San Guiseppe Orphanage in Sicily, Habitat for Humanity projects in El Salvador, as well as feeding and caring for infants at an orphanage in Djibouti, just to highlight a few. “It gives an insight into local culture,

The Godfather Tour with ITT

T

he first thing that comes to mind when you think of Sicily might be oranges, hand painted ceramics, prickly pears or the beautiful lava rock beaches. For many who’ve never visited the island, the mafia is likely to be a first thought - with all knowledge of Sicily coming from Francis Ford Coppola’s famous movie series, The Godfather. The Godfather trilogy, based on Mario Puzo’s book, is based on a fictional Sicilian-American crime family, originally from Corleone, Sicily. Several of the scenes take place in Sicily, however, when Coppola and Puzo scouted for filming locations for the original 1972 film, they discovered that Corleone was too modern to provide a backdrop for scenes taking place around 1950. So they chose the small towns of Forza d’Agrò and Savoca. ITT’s tour visits both cities. Forza d’Agrò, is the location where two churches were used in the films; the Cathedral of Forza

d’Agrò and The Church of the Holy Trinity. The first is featured in the first two Godfather films in the scenes where Michael walks through town and later when young Vito Andolini escapes from Corleone. The other church is used in the third film. Each is a typical Italian church façade, but very recognizable from the movies. The most fascinating part of the trip is the stop in Savoca. This pretty little town is nestled on a hill overlooking a landscape of rocky, rolling hills and the Ionian coast. The first familiar spot you see is Bar Vitelli, the bar used in the scene where Michael meets Apollonia’s father and arranges to meet her. This bar looks almost exactly as it does in the film. Outside, the table where Michael and his men sat is set up with toy guns and a flat cap for a cheesy and fun photo opportunity. The inside of the bar is plastered with photos from the film. They sell the usual café and granite, along with post cards, t-shirts and a few other small memorabilia. A small square sits across from Bar Vitelli with an unbelievable overlook and a silhouette of Francis Ford Coppola. From the square you can see a church at the top of the hill. This is the church of St. Lucia. It’s where Michael Corleone and Apollonia were married. It’s a small trek uphill but it’s worth the trip to kneel on the step where they did, and march down the hill with the movie’s theme music playing in your head. For a true The Godfather fan, this is a magical experience. ITT’s trip to Forza d’Agrò and Savoca is a once in a lifetime opportunity for any fan of the movie. The trip is coming up again on Saturday, Oct. 26. For more information, call ITT at 624-4777.

LCDR Josh Arthur, MD is an experienced pediatrician and parent, having taken care of his three children and yours since coming to Sigonella in 2010. There has been a uptick in Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease in recent weeks. But before parents high-tail it down to the hospital for a check-up, it’s best to understand the disease itself before hopping in the car. Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a common viral infection, usually affecting kids, though it can affect adults. A more accurate name for the condition would be “Hand, Foot, Mouth, and Buttock Disease” because those are the most common places rashes appear. In addition to a fever, children will get ulcers on the lips and mouth and whitish blisters or red bumps on the hands and feet. The condition is classically caused by viruses such as coxsackievirus, echovirus or enterovirus. The most common is coxsackievirus – scary name, usually not so scary of an illness. These viruses can cause a variety of rashes - some people may have red bumps everywhere, some may seem to have bruises on their feet, others are covered with little blisters - usually on the areas described above, but often everywhere. The good news is that other than possibly ruining a holiday portrait with a face full of little blisters, HFMD is generally a pretty mild disease. The fever usually goes away on its own in two to three days. The rash will generally peak in the same time frame. After that, children are generally back to bouncing off walls. However, the rash can take a week or two to heal; ulcers in the mouth should heal more quickly.

Some children can get a little sicker, most commonly if sores in the mouth make it difficult to drink, leading to dehydration. Some of the viruses listed above can also cause meningitis, encephalitis or myocarditis (infections of the nervous system or heart). However, these are rare, usually caused by different strains of virus than those that cause HFMD, and especially in the case of nervous system infections, almost always resolve in a week or so. If you think your child is dehydrated, in a lot of discomfort, or more sick than you would expect (expect your child to act like a fussy but normal version of him or herself), you should bring them to your local friendly medical provider to be seen. Treatment is generally just keeping kids comfortable while their bodies heal themselves. If swallowing is uncomfortable, some Tylenol or Motrin might help the pain and/or fever, and cold or soft foods (like popsicles and ice cream) will always be well-received. If that’s not enough, your doctor may have some suggestions for mouthwashes, lozenges or prescription medications. Prevention is difficult. Most transmission is via stool, but it can also be transmitted via nasal discharge, blister fluid or saliva. Washing hands is most important, as is keeping surfaces disinfected and clean. The virus is most infectious in the first few days of illness, so it’s reasonable to keep children away from other children if they still have open blisters on the mouth or skin.
