U
.S. Ambassador to Italy David Thorne joined Sailors, Airmen, and Marines stationed or deployed to Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella for the 70th annual Operation Husky commemoration ceremony at Aldisio Mallia Palace in Gela, July 10. The ceremony is dedicated to fallen members of the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division who died during the allied invasion of Sicily, which took place during World War II. “Today as we commemorate that momentous turning point in the war, and in the destiny of Sicily, let us all resolve to work together to strengthen the relationship between our two peoples,” Thorne said. “The relationship that has developed between Americans and their Sicilian hosts since World War II has been a close one, a relationship marked by countless ties between us.” Also in attendance with Thorne, NAS Sigonella Commanding Officer Capt. Chris Dennis, service
members from Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Sicily and Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force 13, Governor of Sicily, Rosario Crocetta, Prefetto of Caltanissetta Dr. Carmine Valente, and Mayor of Gela, Angelo Fasulo. “The friendships developed between our American military personnel stationed in Sicily and their Sicilian host communities have been an enduring characteristic of military service here,” Thorne said. “We want to nourish and strengthen that bond of friendship between us. We would never wish to jeopardize that relationship with our hosts, our friends.” As part of this year’s ceremony, NAS Sigonella and Gela officials invited retired Army Col. James Clarke and his family to lead the wreath laying for the fallen members. Clarke was six months old when his father, Lt. Col. Arthur Gorham, lost his life during Operation Husky and said having his family present to honor his father and the
rest of the fallen members was a great moment for him and his family. “This is our family’s second return to Sicily to honor those brave Soldiers who gave their lives to begin the invasion that eventually toppled fascism in all of Europe,” Clarke said. “I’ve learned about my father through books and a scrapbook my mother kept. This time I brought my sons, my daughter and two of my grandsons so they can learn and get to know their great grandfather.” After the wreath laying, former 82nd Airborne members Melvin John Hoffpauir and Col. Tucker Mansager lead a role call for those who gave their lives, concluding the ceremony with the traditional shout of "Airborne!" “On this day, 70 years ago, the destiny of the Sicilian people took a historic turn,” Thorne said. “The graves of American dead lie still today on Italian soil, bearing witness to the supreme sacrifice paid by American soldiers in the Sicilian campaign.”

NAS Sigonella Commanding Officer, Capt. Chris Dennis Buon giorno Sigonella! I continue to enjoy travelling the bases and meeting you! Everyday I see great people doing great work and believe me, what we do here really matters. I am proud to be a part of this great community. Thank you very much! I hope by now everyone has heard or read something about being a “Sig’ Citizen” and the three broad obligations we have to one another for community security, resource conservation, and health and welfare. Broadly, citizenship is a social contract where each person has both rights and responsibilities. Now, I am asking for your help. We need you to help us all grow and mature our understanding of these communal responsibilities so I am sponsoring a Sig’ Citizenship competition. I am certain the best concepts (slogan, motto, or logo/ imagery) are in your imaginations – you are WAY smarter and more creative than I am! Please, share your good ideas. Ultimately your ideas will go A LONG WAY by moving us from thinking and talking to civic action. Sig’ Citizenship must become second nature for us to
work, live and thrive together. In the past we have come together for “Sig Pride Day,” an outstanding initiative, but truly everyday should be “Sig Pride Day.” What are your ideas? The competition will be open to ALL. Do you have the slogan, motto and logo/imagery that most accurately communicates Sig’ Citizenship? As an example, this year the Navy’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) slogan is, “We own it…We’ll solve it… Together.” This slogan is straight to the point, unambiguous in terms of goals and responsibilities. Let’s craft something equally powerful for our community and Sig’ Citizenship. Stay tuned to the Signature, Facebook, All Hands and AFN – competition details are coming VERY SOON. The competition will be open to all hands; US, Italian, Active Duty, Reservist, Civilian employees and dependents. The top 3 submissions will be chosen and placed on the NAS Sigonella Facebook site from which
Editorial submissions are welcomed from all Naval Air Station Sigonella departments, divisions and tenant commands. Editorial submissions should be sent to the Public Affairs Office via thesig@eu.navy.mil, guard mail stop #68 or hand-delivered to our office no later than the close of business on the Friday proceeding the expected publication date. All articles submitted by non-staff members will be considered contributing writers. The Signature will not publish anyanonymous articles. aval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella Sailors training for the Auxiliary Security Force (ASF) program shot M9 Beretta 9mm pistols and M500 shotguns as part of their week-long weapons qualifications course, which lasted from July 8-12. Joining the ASF trainees were NAS Sigonella Security Sailors, earning their re-qualifications for the M9. Small-arms Instructor, Gunner’s Mate 1st Class Bryan Silveri, said the qualification courses not only help the Sailors get familiar with the weapons, but also helps the NAS Sigonella security department add more Sailors to aid with long hours of gate-watch. “Unfortunately, the entire Navy is undermanned right now but security remains important,” Silveri said. “We need extra bodies for our security forces who stand long hours of watch, so we need our security members and ASF members to stay augmented and qualified.” ASF training members also learned close-quarter combat tactics among other training scenerios during the second week of ASF training which lasted from July 15-19.

Sigonella Battalion Fire Chief recognized by CPSE by Lea Hayes NAS Sigonella Fire Chief
N
icholas Christensen, Battalion Chief, NAS Sigonella Fire & Emergency Services, was recently recognized by the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE) as the recipient of the Fire Officer Designation (FO). At the time of submittal, then Captain Christensen, became the 3rd member of Navy Fire and Emergency Services and only the 7th in DOD to receive this credential. Currently, there are 141 credentialed Fire Officers worldwide. Recently, Captain Christensen has been selected for promotion to Battalion Chief and also serves as the Agency’s Accreditation Manager. The CPC’s credentialing process validates an applicant’s academic knowledge, psycho-motor skills, experience, and leadership. Credentialing is an ongoing process, requiring reapplication and additional review, demonstrating that an individual officer has developed a strategy for continued career improvement and development. The CPC is the only organization developed for the sole purpose of credentialing emergency services officers to a level of superior professionalism.
Take advantage of CAPSTONE by Fleet & Family Support Center NAS Sigonella
A
s part of the VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011, the CAPSTONE event was created to be conducted after a service member has completed the Transition Goals, Plans, Success (TGPS) program. The purpose of the CAPSTONE event is to review service member preparedness in order for that individual to make a successful transition from military service to a civilian career. During the CAPSTONE event, either the transition counselor from the Fleet and Family Support Center or the service member’s Command Career Counselor will evaluate the service member’s readiness by reviewing their Individual Transition Plan (ITP) and supporting documentation to verify that the service member has completed all of his Career Readiness Standards (CRS) prior to transition. This is done by completing ITP Checklist/DD Form 2958, a document which as of October 1, 2014 will become a part of separating and/or retiring service members’ personnel records as proof of completion of TGPS and the CAPSTONE event. Either the FFSC transition
counselor or a Command Career Counselor may sign the DD 2958 as a “Transition Counselor.” The CAPSTONE event can be done in a group setting or on an individualized basis. Due to Sigonella’s current throughput, the transition counselor and career counselors are currently planning to address the majority of CAPSTONE events on a one-on-one basis in order to best meet the needs of our service members. In order to address more members at one time, specific CAPSTONE events will also be scheduled based on throughput. As of this time, two initial, trialrun CAPSTONE events are scheduled for Monday, July 22nd from 12-4 pm and Tuesday, August 20th from 12-4pm at the FFSC. However, CAPSTONE events can be done on an as-needed basis by career counselors and the FFSC transition counselor in addition to these timeframes, in order to ensure all service members can complete their DD 2958 in a timely manner. Ultimately, the command gives final approval of the DD 2958 and ensures that this document is filed in the service members’ personnel record.

Italy Outraged at Football Star Fabrizio Miccoli's Italian Climbing Child Prodigy Mob Links and Insults to Anti-Mafia Hero; Godfather Dies in French Accident town Corleone revokes his honorary citizenship Courtesy by http://climbing.about.com
T
Former Palermo captain Fabrizio Miccoli recently made an emotional apology after being accused of extortion and insulting the murdered anti-mafia judge Giovanni Falcone. Miccoli, who also played for Juventus and Fiorentina and won 10 caps for Italy, was close to tears at a news conference in the Sicilian capital, a day after he was questioned for five hours by public prosecutors. A
n Italian football star has begged the sister of a prominent prosecutor killed by the mafia to endorse him as a role model for legality in Sicily - even though the footballer was recorded insulting her late brother as "mud". Palermo's captain, Fabrizio Miccoli, 34, has been put under formal police investigation for allegedly asking Mauro Lauricella - son of jailed mafia boss Antonio Lauricella - for help with a finance deal. In phone recordings, Miccoli was heard smearing anti-mafia icon Giovanni Falcone, who was murdered in 1992, referring to him as "Mud Falcone" on several occasions. In Sicily, "mud" is a label of extreme dishonour. Miccoli and Lauricella, who had his phone bugged by police, were also recorded singing "that mud Falcone" together. Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo and three security guards died in a bomb blast as they were travelling near the Sicilian town of Capaci 21 years ago.
As the recordings were made public, Palermo's owner, Maurizio Zamparini, put Miccoli, his captain and top striker, up for sale. Italy's public administration minister Gianpiero D'Alia called for the football authorities to ban Miccoli for life. Miccoli has taken part in various charity football matches in memory of prosecutors killed by the Mafia. After maintaining silence over the latest revelations, Miccoli, who has also played for Juventus and the Italian national team, held a press conference to apologise to Palermo and his own family. The striker choked back tears as he claimed he was not a mafioso. "I neglected my family for the city of Palermo. I hung out with everyone thinking they could give me friendship. I was mistaken," Miccoli said. "When this will be all over I want to become a testimonial for legality. I hope Mrs. Falcone will allow me to do so." He added that he had apologised to her.
(The Telegraph) - Corleone, a hill town surrounded by rocky ridges and cactus clumps south of Palermo, was once a byword for Cosa Nostra but is now trying to shake off that reputation. The town council has voted to withdraw the honorary citizenship of Fabrizio Miccoli, a striker and former captain of Palermo's football team, after he described as "filth" Giovanni Falcone, one of Italy's most celebrated antiMafia investigators. "After he spoke in those terms about Giovanni Falcone, it was the least that we could have done," said Leoluchina Savona, the mayor of the town, who described the judge as "a civic hero". The footballer had been held up as an example for the children of Corleone for demonstrating "values such as loyalty, solidarity and healthy
competition," but could no longer be presented as a role model, the mayor said. Mr Miccoli is under investigation by prosecutors in Palermo for extortion and for allegedly asking Mafia mobsters to recover money that was owed to him. Cosa Nostra's power has diminished in the last decade, after the arrest of some of its most high-profile leaders, but it is by no means a spent force. Corleone was made famous by The Godfather, a 1969 novel by the Italian-American author Mario Puzo, and the subsequent films that were based on it and which starred Marlon Brando, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. In January this year the town asked forgiveness for the murders, shootings and other crimes committed by its godfathers over the past few decades.
ito Traversa, a 12-year-old Italian climbing prodigy, died on Friday, July 5, from severe injuries sustained in a ground fall three days before at Orpierre, a limestone climbing area in southern France. Traversa had just led a 5.10d or 6b route at the Sectuer Belleric as a warm-up and was lowering back down the route when eight of the dozen quickdraws failed, dropping him 85 feet to the ground. Tito was rushed to Grenoble University Hospital and put into a drug-induced coma because of a head injury. The accident and tragic death of Tito Traversa has shocked the European climbing community. The Italian website Planet Mountain called him "a young boy with a boundless joy, passion and talent for climbing." Tito's dedication to climbing was amazing. At age 8 he climbed a 5.13b (8a) route, then a 5.13d (8b) at age 9, followed his first 5.14a (8b+) when he was 10. He has since climbed several more 5.14 routes and had a bright future as a climbing superstar. The accident happened because Tito used some new quickdraws purchased by another in the group of Italian climbers. The quickdraws were, however, incorrectly put together so that the clipping carabiner on the bottom of the draw was attached only to a rubber keeper loop, what Petzl calls the "string," instead of the sewn full-strength loop. Petzl notes on their website,"The string serves two functions: it holds the rope end carabiner in place on the rope end of a quickdraw or sling and it protects a relatively high-wear area of the sling." It is not known at this time who manufactured the failed quickdraws. Traversa led the route with the new quickdraws, placing four properly assembled ones on the first bolts and then the improper quickdraws on the upper bolts and anchors. No one noticed that the carabiners were not attached to the sewn sling. When Traversa reached the bolt anchors at the top of the sport pitch, he began lowering and the carabiners snapped off the rubber loops on each quickdraw after the anchor draws failed, dropping him to the ground.

Sicilian town set to ban bikinis and flip-flops (The Local) - Mayor Filippo Drago said he wants to make his town more "dignified", according to a report in the Catania edition of Corriere. He does not want to see any signs of nakedness on the streets of the town's historic centre, especially near the church and other "sensitive places". Drago is following in the footsteps of fellow mayor Francesco Benincasa, who has banned scantily-clad visitors from the marina area of Vietri sul Mare in Amalfi. But the proposal has irked residents of Aci Castello, a town close to the city of Catania, who do not want to remember 2013 as being "the summer of fines". "I do not like this regulation," one resident told Corriere."I live over the road from the beach. If I go for a swim I don't want to have to put my shirt on just to get home. This is a holiday resort. You can't prohibit tourists from moving around in their swimming costumes." The mayor is also looking to ban sexual services, even though prostitution is legal in Italy. He is also considering a ban on feeding pigeons.
New transport service between Malta and Sicily (Maltatoday.com) A new transport service between Malta and Sicily was recently launched aboard the MV Audacia. The service, which will operate between Malta, Salerno and Augusta three times a week until the end of August, was launched in the presence of Transport Minister Karmenu Vella, and Economy Minister Chris Cardona. Vella said this service would complement other existing services and would continue to improve accessibility between the islands. He said that 2012 figures showed 45,000 passengers came to Malta from Sicily by air, and the same amount arrived by sea. He added that the majority of these tourists were Italian and Sicilian, but also included British tourists, Americans and Russians, as well as tourists from Eastern Europe. "Despite Malta's small size, the market between Malta and Sicily is one of the most important when it comes to travel. The number of Maltese people choosing to visit Sicily on short holidays is ever increasing, as is the number of people who travel to Sicily during their stay in Malta," he said. This new service aims to cater both to tourists and for the transportation of goods between the islands. The MV Audacia is 199m long, holds up to 500 passengers, and can carry around 165 containers. The boat has 65 cabins and 265 beds and reaches a maximum velocity of 25 knots per hour. The service is being made available by Grimaldi Holding, whos representatives in Malta are Gollcher Group.

Tito Claudio Traversa died on July 5 after having fought very hard for three days at the Grenoble hospital in France, after a groundfall from some 17 meters in Orpierre. He was together with his gym's sport group, without his parents. A couple of days before, the 12 year old did his fourth 8b+. Italian Dog Saves Condominium From Gas Explosion (Italy Magazine) A dog's alert nose helped an apartment building in Livorno from blowing up - and a man from committing suicide. The incident has made national news in Italy. It took place in Via Settembrini, in the Rosa neighborhood of the city of Livorno, a port on the Ligurian Sea on the western coast of Tuscany. According to Italian news site 'QuiLivorno.it', it took place during the night when most of the occupants of a block of flats were sleeping. However, a 16-month-old Golden Retriever called 'Mia' was awake. She smelled gas, alerted her family and so was able to save them all. Mia barked and barked in an attempt to attract the attention of her owner and his family. Her barks were so loud that she woke her sleeping owner. An intelligent dog, Mia then made her owner understand that he was in danger because the owner's next-door neighbor in the apartment block, a 53-yearold man, had decided to take his life by leaving the gastap open in the kitchen and torching his apartment. The apartment building and its sleeping occupants would have gone up in flames if the canine heroine had not raised the alarm. Mia's owner called the emergency services and fire fighters arrived to put out the blaze. The man who had left the gas open then tried to take his life by jumping off a balcony but emergencyservices staff were able to stop him. His apartment was almost destroyed by the fire. Mia's proud owner told the press: "Mia has never barked until [that] day. [That night] she started to bark and growl, and showed me to the landing, I saw smoke coming out from the neighbor's door. I knocked on the door and I heard him answer: 'I'm not interested in anything, I don't care about anything.'"
Washington lawyer appointed next US ambassador Rome (AKI) - Influential Washington lawyer John Phillips will serve as the next United States ambassador to Italy, the White House announced last Wednesday. Phillips takes over from current ambassador David Thorne, who is finishing his four-year term. He is the recently retired founder of a Washington law firm and the founder of the executive committee Taxpayers Against Fraud. Phillips is married to Linda Douglass, a former network television reporter who worked on US president Barack Obama's campaign. She later promoted Obama's health care law as a White House aide. Police arrest registered blind man riding a bicycle Perugia(AKI) - Police in central Italy recently arrested a man who was drawing a monthly state disability pension for the blind after spotting him riding a bicycle, reading and walking briskly. The man from the city of Perugia purportedly had a disease that had left him almost completely blind and requiring assistance to go shopping and perform other tasks, for which he received a 500 euro monthly pension. Italy's finance police have seized over 16,500 euros of pension payments made to the man since 2010. He is accused of defrauding the Italian state.

Shining a light on Caltagirone C
Story by Lt Matt knight Photos courtesy of NAS Sigonella Public Affairs Office Archives
altagirone can easily be called Sicily’s city of ceramics. This quiet town situated only a short drive down SS417 boasts some of the finest ceramic pottery and plates in the region. The ceramics are so prolific that they adorn not only the shop windows, but many of the buildings, balconies, and the famous Scala di S. Maria del Monte also known as the Caltagirone Stairs. Caltagirone pottery and later ceramics became part of the town’s major industries throughout history mainly because of the vast amounts of clay deposits that exist in the region. According to Catania-sicilia.it, “The production (of pottery) improved becoming more efficient and more precise when the wheel was introduced (by the Cretans in about 1000 BC).” The critical turning point, however, was the arrival of the Arabians in the 9th century, for, with them, practices were changed irrevocably. They introduced Eastern designs and also glazing techniques that rendered objects impermeable to water. The art became more sophisticated as exquisite geometric patterning and stylized decoration were modeled on plants and animals. Blue, green and yellow were the predominant colors.” The style of ceramics that
emerged became known as Maiolica pottery which refers to the tin glazed earthenware ceramics that can be seen today.
The Caltagirone Stairs themselves offer an enticing look at the local mastery of Maiolica pottery and impressive construction techniques in building the 142 steps that connect the upper part of the city to the lower. Each individual stair has a unique set of decorations and combined with the breathtaking view of the region from the top of the stairs there is little doubt why they are a local favorite. On any given Sunday afternoon the streets that spread out below the Caltagirone Stairs are filled with curious tourists, strolling locals and families who are having a quiet Sunday afternoon sitting and talking on the stairs. Several local gelato, pastry and espresso shops nearby offer mouthwatering treats to anyone who wants to enjoy them while taking in the ornately decorated stairs above and the view of the region below. Additionally, for anyone looking to do a little ceramics shopping there are several ceramics shops lining the stairs themselves as well as all over the surrounding city.
The famous staircase, built in 1608 to connect the upper and lower parts of town, is always adorned with beautiful hand-painted ceramic tiles. But it annually transforms into a glowing, unique work of art as the colorful lanterns are arranged into beautiful patterns that change every year.
The celebration of the city’s Patron Saint James culminated in the lighting of 4,000 oil lanterns wrapped in colored paper and arranged in intricate patterns up and down the 142 steps of the staircase of Santa Maria del Monte.
The trip to Caltagirone is a simple 45 minute drive for anyone leaving from NAS II and offers a family friendly day trip. Just take the SS417 towards Gela and as Caltagirone approaches take the second exit “Caltigirone Nord” and follow the “Centro” signs to reach the town’s center and the stairs.

Ceramics are displayed everywhere in Caltagirone. They can be found adorning most buildings, or, as in this case, lining the streets.

Celebrating Unity & Practicing Diversity by Chaplain Scott Cauble NAS Sigonella Chaplain
H
aving just celebrated our nation’s 237th birthday, I am reminded of David McCullough’s great book 1776 which provides many details on that critical year in our nation’s history. It is fascinating that the heroes in our country’s struggle for independence were mostly inexperienced folks who decided to use their gifts for the good of the whole. George Washington, Nathaniel Greene, and Henry Knox were all men of great character and insight but very little, if any, military training. Yet it was they who decided to use their gifts that were used mightily to inspire the Continental Army, a ragtag bunch of farmers, to stay the course and eventually defeat the most powerful army on earth. The Bible speaks similarly in Romans 12:3-8. Here, the Apostle Paul asks us to think soberly about the gift that has been given us. When it comes to talents, we often do not think soberly but are sometimes jealous of the gifts of others or devalue or overexaggerate our own. Thinking critically about the gifts God has given us is the first step in the battle. Also, though, he asks us to celebrate unity. Twice in this passage he reminds us that the church is one body. As our bodies are made up of arms, legs, hands, feet, eyes, ears, and noses we need to recognize that although our gifts are different they all work together for the good of the whole body. Finally, he tells us to use our gift for the benefit of the whole. Regardless of whether your gift is in a speaking or leadership role or in performing the less visible gifts, we are incomplete without the God-given gift that you bring. Your time at NAS Sigonella is a great opportunity for you to not only grow in your faith but also help others in their growth and walk with God. Failing to gather in fellowship hinders your growth and also robs our chapel community of the gifts and talents you have been given. Let me encourage you not to succumb to the virtual community mindset but to actually gather together with the visible community.

NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER FINAL SAMPLE RESULTS FOR NISCEMI AND MARINAI DID NOT EXCEED THE MAXIMUM CONTAMINANT LEVELS FOR BROMATE
W
e routinely monitor our water systems for the presence of contaminants. Our previous round of sampling taken at Niscemi and Marinai water systems indicated that Bromate was one microgram per liter above the level allowed by Italian legislation and the DoD Final Governing Standards (FGS) for Italy, which is 10 micrograms per liter (or parts per billion), known as the maximum contaminant level (MCL). Final test results for our latest round of sampling were received on 02 July 2013 and showed Bromate at 1 to 3 micrograms per liter at Niscemi, NAS 1, and NAS 2, and 5.6 to 6.3 micrograms per liter at Marinai. All of these levels are below the MCL, and pose no short or long term health risks. We intend to continue to keep our community members informed about our water quality and what we are doing to fix problems related to the water systems.
What happened? What is being done?
We are continuing to seek the root cause of the Bromate presence in our water. We are taking the following steps to further investigate the issue: --Conducting laboratory analysis of our water treatment chemicals --Reviewing our operational procedures for water treatment --Performing additional testing to ensure bromate levels are reduced and, ultimately, remain below the MCL --reviewing laboratory procedures to make sure all possible sources of laboratory error are eliminated. --enlisted the expertise of the Navy Laboratory Quality and Accreditation Office (LQAO). As additional information becomes available, updates will be provided to you via All Hands messages, Facebook updates, the base newspaper and other media.
What does this mean?
Bromate at the levels measured in the drinking water does not cause any acute symptoms (i.e. stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea), or chronic symptoms (i.e. cancer), and is safe to drink.
What should I do?
At this time, you can continue drinking the water. If the situation changes, you will be notified. If you have specific health concerns, you should consult your doctor or the US Naval Hospital Sigonella Medical Home Port at 335-578-8077. Please share this information with all other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly. ON THE GO WITH MWR
Teen Hire Program by Christian Moore MWR Guest Writer
T
he Teen Hire program is off to a great start so far! The program began mid-July and runs until mid- August. It is teaching young men and women to be responsible and how to behave in a working environment. The teen hire program is also getting teens ready for the future when they have permanent jobs. There are many varieties of skills that are gained each day from the workplace of the teen hires (especially in marketing) like cleaning, taking care of children, laminating, and working on a Mac computer. It all started with teens willing to become an employee during the summer and give up their fun time at the beach or playing video games all day. The easiest part of the process for me was filling out applications and writing or updating a resume. After that it was time for the hardest part, the interviews. When you’re in the interview process the only thing you’re thinking is; when am I going to get out of here! It is so nerve wrecking to be in the situation of talking about yourself or how you can solve problems in a workplace. After that madness it all comes down to waiting for that one phone call that confirms that you received a job. When you get the phone call all you can really do is jump for joy and be happy! The great thing is that the program is year round so you have several chances to apply. After orientation you get to start working with your new co-workers. To be an employee you have to be dedicated to your job and willing to sacrifice other activities outside of your workplace to come to work. You benefit by gaining responsibility and maturity from the job. It’s a great way to make money and save up for something big. When you actually buy the item that you’ve been saving for you feel like you accomplished something and it makes the reward a whole lot sweeter. Being an MWR employee makes your life a whole lot sweeter also.
Questions and Answers:
How do you feel about your job?
Sydney (Fitness Center): “It is very fun. I get to help the patrons when they need information. “ Scott (AFN): “It’s a great opportunity and I enjoy working there. It’s a great experience to learn different skills.” Gabe (Marketing): “ It’s a great way to get involved and get some experience. It exposes us to real work environments that help prepare us for the future.”
What is your favorite part of your job?
Sydney (Fitness Center): “My favorite part of working here is answering the phones and helping people.” Scott (AFN): My favorite part is getting to talk on AFN the Eagle. Gabe (Marketing): “My favorite part of working at Marketing is my interactions with my co-workers.”

by MR1 Gary SpeNce NAS Sigonella Public Affairs Members of Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella’s First Class Petty Officer Association (FCPOA) gathered in front of the NAS I gate for a clean-up effort, July 12. To show their 'Sig Pride,' the FCPOA conducts this clean-up project on a continuous basis in an effort to maintain a professional appearance at the area for those entering NAS I. The FCPOA has adopted this area in much the same way that the
Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) has adopted the parking garage on NAS II and is responsible for its cleanliness. NAS Sigonella's FCPOA collected more than 20 bags of trash during this most recent clean-up effort. Logistics Specialist First Class Michael Lee, who scheduled the project, saw this as an opportunity for the FCPOA to get together for a group event, as well as do their part in keeping the base clean.
"The NAS Sigonella FCPOA believes that the base and its surroundings is a direct reflection of the United States and its military," Lee said. "We want to keep the NAS 1 gate and its surrounding areas clean and free from debris, so we have been scheduling clean-ups once a month and even mowed and cut the grass two months ago. Our brothers and sisters want to do our part and help maintain the US military's standards of excellence."
Organizational Climate Survey begins July 22 The Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI) Organizational Climate Survey (DEOCS) will be available from July 22 to August 5.
