IGONELLA, Sicily (Sept. 11, 2013) – Community and service members stationed aboard Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella gathered for a 9/11 remembrance ceremony Sept. 11, outside the installation’s Midtown Complex. The ceremony was held to remember and honor the lives of those who were lost during the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, Pentagon and aboard Flight 93. “We gather today to remember 12 years ago when terrorists attacked Americans on United States soil. Individual memories of that day have brought us together not only as an installation, but as a nation,” said Fire Chief Lea Hayes, NAS Sigonella Fire and Emergency Services and ceremony guest speaker. “We honor all of those who perished during this act of terrorism and the military and civilians who sacrificed themselves for the safety and security of our nation.”

The wreaths were colored green; representing healing, white; signifying goodness and pink; meaning love and friendship. “During a person’s lifetime certain events will occur that will be so significant that from that day forward they will be able to remember exactly what they were doing, where they were, who they were with and more important, what they felt,” said US Navy SIXTH Fleet Command Master Chief Charles “Chip” Collins, ceremony guest speaker. “September 11, 2001 is indeed a day of tragedy and sorrow. However, the courageous response from each and every one in response to that day is more important to me. I thank you for rising to the challenge and your country and I are forever in your debt.”
During the remembrance, a 78-second moment of silence was shared among the attendees, each second representing one minute in the timeline of events that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001. A ring of a bell cut the silence, marking the events as they transpired 12 years ago. “We do not forget the innocent people who lost their lives that day,” said Hayes. “Each person was a friend, a family member, a coworker. Every person is missed.”

Buongiorno Sigonella! I would like to offer my sincerest congratulations to those who pinned on their chief ’s anchors last Friday during this year’s pinning ceremony. The chief ’s pinning ceremony is a special Navy tradition which dates back to 1893 when the chief petty officer pay-grade was created. The ceremony signifies a new position of leadership and responsibilities for the Navy. Although the pay grades of E-7 through E-9 are equivalent to those of other services, the Navy is unique in that it confers much more authority and responsibility on the chief, while demanding more performance and results than any of the other services. So in keeping with more than 100 years of Navy tradition, chiefs should be prepared to
lead their Sailors into an increasingly uncertain future and always be ready when a junior Sailor comes to “Ask the Chief.” With the new school year in full swing now, it is important for those of us in the community, especially those with children in school, to play an active role not only in the lives of the students, but in the school itself. One way to participate is to join the School Advisory Committee (SAC). The purpose of the SAC is to act as a liaison between the school and the community to assure a positive school environment for the students. The SAC advises the principal on all matters affecting the operation of the school, including school policies, instructional programs, budget, facilities, maintenance, administrative
procedures, school meal programs, etc. If you would like to get involved, please contact 624-4281 for more information. Speaking of getting involved, probably the easiest way to support the school and the students is to simply volunteer your time. The school is always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to assist with sporting events and other educational activities sponsored by the school. There are never enough job openings to take care of all of the needs the school has. We depend on dedicated volunteers to help keep our programs running at a highly professional level. If this is something that interests you, please contact the volunteer coordinator in the Volunteer Service Center at 624-4281.
Finally, we will soon be celebrating the 238th birthday of the U.S. Navy. The Navy Ball Committee and its volunteers have been busy raising funds for this event in an effort to lower the price for tickets, enabling more folks to come out and enjoy an evening of fun, food, and heritage. American Red Cross welcomes travelers In remembrance of 9/11, The American Red Cross (ARC) held a special Welcome Aboard event for the travelers arriving from the states, Sept. 11. To welcome the newest Sigonellans, ARC handed out bags of snacks, portable toiletries and water bottles for those weary travelers getting off of a long 16-hour flight. Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella Commanding Officer, Capt. Chris Dennis joined Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) Sigonella staff members and NAS Sigonella contractors for a ribbon cutting ceremony officially opening the fitness pool on NAS II, Sept. 12. “The great thing about the NAS II pool is this is where a majority of our active duty Sailors are,” MWR Sigonella Athletic Director John Lenz said. “This [pool] is going to be used for fitness lap swimming to keep our military in shape.” The pool also has two diving boards which were used by Explosive Ordinance Technicians before the pool closed down in the spring of 2009. MWR Sigonella decided to keep the diving
boards and will be replacing them with newer diving boards in the near future. Hours for the new pool will be 5:30 a.m. – 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. “We close for one hour to do some light cleaning and other maintenance,” Lenz said. “The pool is a year round facility and has a nice big covered deck area that we can host command functions more in the summer time.” The completion of the NAS II pool is a portion of the renovations on the NAS II facilities, which also include a multi-sport field scheduled to open in early November and the refurnished Flight Line Fitness Center scheduled to open next January.

In Gear Career (IGC) held its monthly networking event in the Midtown Compass Room on NAS I, Sept. 13. Career-minded spouses attended the event looking to connect professionally with peers and learn techniques to identify networking relationships to assist in sharpening their career focus and direction. "Mentoring partnerships are structured to generate greater selfreflection, interest assessment and career clarity," said IGC Mentorship Director Mike Matheny. IGC is a nonprofit organization for career-minded military and civilian spouses. Through networking opportunities, professional development and the utilization of knowledge-sharing, purposeful networks and resources are established. When it is time to depart Sigonella, the local network will evolve into a global network, as connections can be made with other IGC chapters at the next locale. Normal home enterprises are allowed onboard DOD Installations, so far as they follow all applicable guidelines. You may be familiar with home businesses that sell prepared meals or other items, and these enterprises, when correctly run, are a benefit to our community. While they are neither licensed nor endorsed by the Department of the Navy, they are allowed to operate, subject to restrictions, on Navy installations. There are several important guidelines to consider. Making appointments with or soliciting military or civilian personnel during their duty hours is a violation of Navy policy. DOD personnel giving contact information or access to DOD workspaces to a person engaging in private sales is a violation of DOD policy. Any violations of DOD policy should be reported immediately. Personal email and Facebook are appropriate communication tools to market these items. Personnel at NAS Sigonella who engage in home enterprises are responsible, at their own expense, for determining what US and Italian tax implications are associated with their home business, and properly reporting that income. Club Beyond students strive to score points during "The Race" as teammates look on and cheer."(Photo by Adrian Larsen) Club Beyond continues to be involved at Naval Air Staion (NAS) Sigonella by providing fun and meaningful activities for 6th through 12th graders. During the summer, Club Beyond members went on several well-supervised weekly “Thursday Excursions” to destinations including nearby beaches, Etnaland, Alcantara Gorge and Cava Grande. Club Beyond also hosted an activity period for four hours once a week for students to talk, play interactive games, video games, or just hangout. The club also held a five-week team competition called “The Race” on Friday nights in Marinai which challenged teens to work hard, play hard and on occasion, get covered with baked beans or oatmeal slop to support their team. In addition to the fun and games and hard fought competition associated with “The Race,” every evening of race activities concluded with a faith-based discussion about how life is like a race, how to choose positive goals and how to navigate as a runner toward the best finish line.
All of Club Beyond’s activities feature a high ratio of adults who serve as positive role models and strive to walk alongside military teens and their families during these formative years. Even though the summer is over, you can still get involved! Starting in mid-September, Club Beyond will provide “Club” one day per week after school and “Beyond Club” every Wednesday upstairs in the NAS 1 Chapel from 5 - 6:30 p.m. “Club” is never predictable and consists of games, general silliness and a faith-based talk with discussion times about issues that teenagers face every day. “Beyond Club” is fun and silly, but provides significantly more time for teens to discuss in small groups those teenage-life issues with one another. Coming up ... Club Beyond will offer a Winter Blitz trip to Innsbruck, Austria for high school students from Dec. 29 – Jan. 4. Students can sign up to ski, snowboard or attend a basketball clinic called “Camp Meadowlark” taught by Basketball Hall of Famer and former Harlem Globetrotter Meadowlark Lemon. As part of Winter Blitz, everyone has the opportunity to go on a 6 km sled run, tour historic Innsbruck, go to an indoor water park and attend a New Year’s party with Club Beyond teenagers from military bases across Europe! Every evening will conclude with a speaker and time to discuss the evening’s message in a small group setting. Sigonella pistachio lovers will be happy to hear that the mouthwatering annual “Sagra del pistachio” (Pistachio festival) will take place in historic heart of Bronte from Sept. 27 through Sept. 29 and from Oct. 4 through Oct. 6. Bronte, a town located on the Western slopes of Mt. Etna has been awarded the title of “Italian capital of pistachio.” In fact, Bronte boasts a yearly production of nearly 30,000 quintals of pistachios (one per cent of the total world production) that are harvested every two years between August and September. Bronte is therefore considered the spearhead of pistachio’s production in Europe. That is why, in Sicily, this precious seed fruit is also nicknamed “green gold.” Romans firstly introduced the cultivation of pistachio in Sicily importing it from the Middle East. However, it was the Arabs who actively grew, processed, and exported pistachio during the high middle age. That’s why the Sicilian words for pistachio are “Frastuca” (the seed) and “Frastucara” (the plant),
they respectively derive from the Arabic words “Fristach” and Festuch.” In the Catania province, pistachio has been cultivated in the high mountain fertile volcanic soils of Etna since the second half of the 19th century, thanks to its resistance to extreme weather conditions. Over the centuries, local growers have been living in “symbiosis” with the volcano, fearing it but at the same time enjoying the fertility that Etna “donates” to the crops at the end of the eruptive activity. Festival goers browsing through the stalls can sample a variety of pistachio based dishes such as desserts, cakes, ice cream, honey, “Nutella” (hazelnut spread with a chocolaty taste) patisserie and savory dishes such as “Tagghiarini” (tagliatelle) and “Maccarruni” (maccheroni) home made pasta with pesto sauce (made as the usual pesto but replacing the basil with pistachio), Ravioli, “Salsiccia” (pork sausage) and “Arancini” (breaded rice balls filled with ragù and cheese). This year there will also be pistachio vino that is a dessert wine as well as the cocktail al pistacchio (pistachio liquor). The festival also features booths, arts and crafts (lava stone, wood) and other local produce such as cheeses, salami and more as well as sweets including “Fillette” (circular shaped confections made with flour, sugar, and eggs that is cooked in a frying pan) and “Nucatuli” that are made with flour, sugar, lard, eggs vanilla, peeled ground pistachio, cinnamon and rose water. The sagra kicks off at 9 a.m. on Sept. 27 in the main square (piazza Spedalieri). Festivals grounds are open all day long through late night featuring food, activities, arts and crafts, folklore parades and music. Don’t miss the free pistachio cake tasting that takes place in piazza Vincenzo Cstiglione around 5 p.m. on the last festival’s day. While you are visiting the festival make sure you visit the famous “Castello di Nelson,” an amazing castle located in the neighboring town of Maniace, about eight miles from Bronte. The Castle was
built in the 18th century on the ruins of a medieval abbey erected on a basaltic rock by Queen Margaret of Navarra in 1173 and belonged to the world-renowned British Admiral Horatio Nelson, the one who defeated the French at sea during the Napoleonic Wars. King of Naples Ferdinand I gave it to Nelson in 1799 as an award for the support that the British admiral gave him to put down a rebellion that broke out in Naples. According to historians, Nelson never visited the estate even though his’ heirs lived in the castle until 1940 when they were forced to leave Sicily as Italy declared war to England. In 1943, after the Allied landing in Sicily, the Nelsons got back their property but later decided to sell it to Bronte’s Municipality in 1981. Today, the castle’s complex is a magnificent museum and a cultural center where art exhibitions and conferences are held. The castle preserves precious curios and artworks owned by Nelson such as medals, maps, paintings, military dispatches and orders, furniture, archeological findings, clocks, settles and even a set of glasses and a bottle that the admiral used just before his death, during the Battle of Trafalgar. The castle also houses a Norman church in which some valuable paintings and sculptures are preserved. Among them, an 11th century Byzantine painting that depicts the Virgin Mary is undoubtedly the most precious. Before you leave the castle, stroll through its magnificent four hectare-park featuring gardens dotted with lava stone sculptures, pines, cypresses, willows, ashes, magnolias, horse chestnuts, wisteria, pergolas and rose hedges. However, the castle’s apartments are temporary closed for restoration so it is just possible to see the gardens and the outside of the complex. The castle is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Admission is € 1,50 for adults and free for children up to 10 years old. Guided tours in Italian are available every 60 minutes. For more information call 095690018. The Sanctuary of the “Santissima Annunziata,” which is located in Bronte, is also worth a visit. It features a renaissance façade and houses precious marble statues by Antonio Gagini and collection of 18th century paintings. Reaching Bronte is fairly easy. Exit Bronte on Adrano- Randazzo national road 284. NASSIG Sailors and Marines attend 9/11 Memorial in Nissoria NISSORIA, Sicily (Sept. 11, 2013) – Sailors and Marines from NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center-Sigonella and Naval Air Station Sigonella served as U.S. military delegates for the annual 9/11 memorial ceremony held in Nissoria, Enna. The event honored all victims of the 9/11 attacks and highlighted two victims, Vincenzo di Fazio and Salvatore Lopes, who were residents of Nissoria. "I was truly impressed with the organization of the memorial and the size of the turn-out. The citizens of Nissoria experienced the consequences of 9/11 firsthand, and it is only fitting that United States service
members annually honor Vincenzo, Salvatore, and the other innocent lives lost during this terrorist attack," said Lt. Cmdr. Bradley Brooks, who led the Navy delegation. After the memorial, the American guests were invited to enjoy a concert performance of a local clarinet ensemble. Nissoria Mayor Armando Glorioso thanked the American guests for having consistently supported the memorial over the past 12 years and said the community of Nissoria enjoys building great relationships and strong friendship with the Sigonella community.

Parma Music Festival celebrates Verdi's 200th birthday by Parma Teatro Regio Press Office If you plan to travel to the north of Italy in the month of October, you should mark this one on your calendar. This year in Italy's province of Parma, the annual Verdi Festival will celebrate the 200th birthday of Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901), Sept. 30-Oct. 31. The program will include events and performances at the Regio Theatre of Parma and the Verdi Theatre in nearby Busseto. Performances include the operas "Falstaff," "I masnadieri" and "Simon Boccanegra." The composer's "Requiem Mass" and other compositions also will be performed. The Festival Verdi is a unique chance to see the operas of the Great Maestro Giuseppe Verdi live at the Regio theatre, but not only. It's also a festival rich of other events in the city and in the province of Parma. As reported by Emiliadelizia.com, Giuseppe Verdi was born in Le Roncole and later lived in near-by Busetto in the province of Parma. It is in Busetto that Verdi's musical talent was first nurtured by Ferdinando Provesi, of the local Philharmonic. After some time spent in Milan learning all he could about music, the prodigy returned to the province of his childhood and became the town's music teacher. His twenties were marred by great hardship when he lost both his children and his wife, but the Maestro went on to overcome his grief and his best works were composed in the years that followed his tragic loss. The 2013 bicentennial Verdi festival is a must for all opera lovers, and many special tours and opera packages have been arranged to bring music lovers to Parma. There will be an opera or concert every day at the historic Teatro Regio di Parma (which is also the final resting place of Nicolo Paganini, one of the most
renowned violinists in the world) and at the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in Busseto. Many other side events will take place all over the countryside. Operas are usually performed in their original language, and if you do not speak Italian, your experience will be enhanced by reading the libretti – an English synopsis of the story of the opera - before you arrive for the concert. Oh yes, do dress smartly for the Opera - on opening nights formal attire is the norm, and for the other performances at least a tie and/or jacket would be acceptable. Readers of prestigious British luxury travel magazine ‘Condé Nast Traveller’ have voted Italy as their favourite destination in the world. Italy was voted Favourite Country at the Condé Nast Traveller Readers Awards, beating the USA into second place, followed by France, Spain and Greece. La bella Italia had a successful year at the awards: in the Favourite Overseas Cities category, Rome, Venice and Florence were all placed in the top 10. Rome made a remarkable climb to third position from sixth position in 2012, and Venice moved up to fifth place from 18th. In the tourism industry classification, the Grand Hotel Villa Feltrinelli on the western shore of Lake Garda in northern Italy, came second under the category Overseas Holiday Hotels - Europe, Turkey & Russia. The awards are among the most respected and coveted in the travel sector and voted for by ‘Condé Nast Traveller’ readers, who fill out questionnaires on their preferences and tourism experiences, which are then analysed by an independent market-research company and formulated under various categories. Italy received a high number of preferences in all of the categories, most of all for its culture and gastronomy.

Trieste - Italian chef Luca Manfè is the winner of season four of the American competitive reality television series MasterChef. The 31-year-old from the northern Italian town of Aviano was judged by celebrity chefs Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Graham Elliott. Manfè, who manages a restaurant in New York, won the title of MasterChef and its $250,000 prize, beating out 40 other competitors with an international menu that included foie gras, beef ribs and tri-colored panna cotta composed with basil and tomato marmalade representing the Italian flag.
New app lists best places to buy gelato in Italy (The Local)
An Italian entrepreneur with a passion for ice-cream has come up with a technical solution to address the nation’s sweet tooth. This summer, Nicoletta Conficconi, an app developer in Bologna, launched ‘AppGelato’, a free app which lists the locations of Italy’s many gelateria. The app, which is the first of its kind that provides an exhaustive list of Italy’s ice-cream parlours, allows users to search both by location and according to the flavours on offer. “Each [ice-cream parlour] can organize their own ‘shop window’ on the app with all of their available flavours,” Conficconi tells The Local. “So the consumer can search for a gelateria or a particular flavour of icecream and even vote for their favourite gelateria. “The gelateria can also use the app to contact customers through push notifications about new flavours, promotions and events. And the more a gelateria is clicked on, the more visibility it will have on the app - so the ones with the most clicks will be listed at the top.” Conficconi says the inspiration for the app came to her while conducting market research at SIGEP, the International exhibition for the artisan production of gelato, pastry, confectionary and bakery in Rimini. “In my survey I found that, while there were already other apps dedicated to ice-cream and locating ice-cream parlours there were none which listed their flavours and products and which covered the whole of Italy.” Although the app is currently only available in Italian, Conficconi says she hopes one day to translate it into English in a bid to attract tourists visiting the country.

eventeen 1st class petty officers were recently advanced to the rank of chief petty officer during a pinning ceremony Sept. 14, at Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella. The ceremony began with the soon-to-be chiefs marching into the gymnasium in their new khaki uniforms singing "Anchors Aweigh" as they made their way up to the sides of the audience, which featured their fellow Sailors and families. Guest Speaker, NAS Sigonella Commanding Officer Capt. Chris Dennis praised each and every one of the new chiefs during the ceremony. During his speech, Capt. Dennis made it clear to the NAS Sigonella community and service members in attendance how important chief petty officers are to the base and the U.S. Navy as a whole.
“Chief petty officers are truly the backbone of the Navy and our community,” Dennis said. “Those anchors let us know; those wearing them will moor us reliably in the rough seas of service ahead. We depend on our chiefs, our Navy depends on our chiefs, and our country depends on our chiefs.” After the Skipper’s remarks, different chief petty officers made their way to the podium to recite the “Chief Petty Officer Creed,” “Chief Petty Officer Pledge,” and the “Meaning of Fouled Anchor.” The main event was next as all 17 new chief petty officers had their anchors pinned on the collars of their khaki uniforms by family members, friends, and mentors. Every selectee was also presented their new cover by their own chief petty officer sponsor. “I was excited, humbled, and proud,” said Chief
Yeoman Amanda Haynes, Patrol Squadron (VP)-47 Administrative Leading Chief Petty Officer, who is deployed to NAS Sigonella from Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. “My husband was able to fly in from Hawaii and be a part of this tradition so it's was very special to share it with him and the Sailors that attended.” After each new chief petty officer was piped ashore for the first time, the ceremony concluded with Master of Ceremonies, Chief Aviation Ordnanceman Colin Castle inviting the new chief petty officers in front of the stage for the traditional “Navy Chief, Navy Pride,” call. “I hope to be able to always pay forward the opportunities that I received,” Haynes said. “As a chief, we are Sailors first, mission always, so that is what I want to accomplish on a daily basis.”

U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Sigonella conducted a 48-hour mass flu vaccination exercise Sept. 9-10, at USNH Sigonella located on NAS I and the Flight Line Clinic on NAS II.
Because flu vaccinations are mandatory for all military personnel, USNH Sigonella officials conducted the exercise to test hospital personnel on a pandemic influenza mass vaccination plan.
“The pandemic influenza plan is a mass vaccination exercise that we have to do to see if we can actually vaccinate the entire community within a short period of time,” said Lt. Cmdr. John Antoine, department head for preventive medicine. “This will give us a good understanding of how can we do it, lessons learned, and how to correct some of the issues that may surface because of this exercise.” Even though the exercise itself was geared towards vaccinating military members, flu vaccinations were also given out at the schools earlier this week and the Child Development Center staff last week. “I’m looking forward to everyone coming in and getting their flu mist or flu shot and if anyone has any questions they can call me at 624-6249,” Antoine added. Future dates for flu vaccinations are Sept. 23 and 25 at Midtown, Sept. 26 in front of the Navy Exchange, and Sept. 28 in front of the Teen Center in Marinai. Community members who are unable to attend any of the scheduled vaccination days can also report to the immunization section at USNH Sigonella for flu vaccines during October and November.

When is your PRD? What is a PRD? How do I apply for my next set of orders? When do I start applying for orders? These questions affect both junior and senior Sailors alike. But don't fret or be selfconscious about this, because we are here to help. The first step you need to take is to find out what your Projected Rotation Date (PRD) is. This is the month and year that you are billeted to leave your current command. This information can be found by you on NSIPS, CMS/ID, or your current orders. If you have difficulty finding it, ask your Admin department or Command Career Counselor. Once you know when your PRD is, you can figure out when you will begin to negotiate for orders. This process begins nine months prior to your PRD (i.e. PRD is January 2014 - First month of negotiation is April 2013). This negotiation process is actually an application process. These applications are done through the CMS/ID website (https://www.cmsid.navy.mil/). The process is a month long, with a window of about a week to make an application. You are authorized three application months. If you are not selected for orders during those three months, you become "Needs of the Navy" and are no longer eligible to apply. The CMS/ID website is designed to give you, the Sailor, the opportunity to submit your preferences and contact information. It is recommended you do this a minimum 12 months prior to your PRD. Most detailers, utilizing CMS/ID information, e-mail reminders to all their Sailors who's PRD is in the current negotiation window. Usually around 50% of these e-mails are returned due to incorrect e-mail addresses. Many of these e-mail address's being from old commands. Detailers can also use this information to offer up quick fills in special programs and HOT FILL billets. For more information or assistance with this process, contact your Command Career Counselor.
