he beaches of Catania are now a little cleaner with the help of Marines from Special-Purpose MAGTF Africa 13 alongside the Catania West and Duomo 150 rotary clubs in Catania, Italy, July 17. Special-Purpose MAGTF Africa accumulated over twenty bags of trash with the help of the youth groups Rotaract Catania West and Interact Catania West. “Thanks to the help of the Americans, we are getting this done much faster,” said Michele Pennisi, president of Rotaract Catania West. These clubs afford students ranging from 13-25 years old the opportunity to give back to their community by getting involved in projects. These two youth groups have conducted numerous beach cleanups in
the past and continue to incorporate Good Samaritan acts in their day-to-day lives. Special-Purpose MAGTF Africa 13 has done this event several times in the past but for the new iteration it is their first chance to say “hello.” “We do a lot of projects like cleaning the city for our community,” said Alessandra Bellia, president of Interact Catania West. The purpose of this cleanup was to build awareness for the community by setting the example of how to keep the Sicilian shores clean. “The willingness to help out is great for the Italian-American relationship,” said Cpl. Dustin Dixon, a data network specialist with Special-Purpose MAGTF Africa. The Marines in the task force were able
to learn some Italian words as well as gain cultural awareness of their new neighbors. They continue to build a foundation for opportunities to serve in more community service events in the future. Located at Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy, Special-Purpose MAGTF Africa strengthens U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Africa, and U.S. Africa Command’s ability to assist partner nations in addressing their security challenges. The approximately 180 Marines and sailors conduct security force assistance, military-to-military engagements and are trained to provide support to crisis response. The current iteration is staffed primarily from 4th Combat Engineer Battalion out of Baltimore, MD as part of a pre-planned six-month deployment.

NAS Sigonella Command Master Chief David Graham Buon giorno Sigonella! It’s hard to believe that the summer season is passing by so quickly. It won’t be long before the kids are back in school and we return to business as usual. But before we reach the beginning of the new school year, I hope everyone takes some well-deserved time off and enjoys some trips around the island with your family and friends. As we are always in a constant process of improving how we do business, I encourage everyone to participate in the Command Climate survey that is now available online at the following website, http://www.deocs.net/user/ login/login.cfm until August 12. This is a great opportunity to provide candid feedback on where the command should focus our attention to improve the human relations climate of our organization. This is a voluntary survey and is completely anonymous. Our goal is to get maximum participation in order to get the best representation of all our personnel. This will take a combined effort from all of us and I have spoken to the DLCPO’s about allotting time blocks to allow our Sailors and civilian
employees the opportunity to complete the survey, which should take roughly 15 – 20 minutes. If you have any questions concerning the survey, please contact LSC John Trumata (CMEO Program Manager) at 624 – 2211. Thank you in advance for your participation. Our appearance and how we present ourselves is not only a reflection on each of us and our professionalism, but it is a reflection on the Sigonella community and the Navy as a whole. When we are in uniform, we
are each a visible representative of the United States Navy. This is something that we each volunteered to do, so please show that pride and professionalism I know is in each and every one of us. I see a lot of people every day, and I know all of us to be professionals. So keep up the hard work you do every day and be proud of what you do for your country, your community, and yourselves.

t is the fifth line in the Sailor’s Creed: "I am committed to excellence and the fair treatment of all." It is this line that will help forge the Navy into a new era. With the repeal of "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" in September 2011, a new military was born. And nothing epitomizes the future more than this portion of the Sailor’s Creed. On the heels of President Barack Obama’s declaration of June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT)
Pride Month, the Navy’s first ever celebration took place at Naval Support Activity Mid-South in Millington, Tenn. On July 12, U.S. Naval Hospital Sigonella held its own ceremony honoring the LGBT community. “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell was something I always thought was kind of questionable to begin with,” said Lt. Cmdr. James Zmijski, head of the command’s diversity committee. “We know that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals exist in the Navy, so why were we
shutting the door on them? Why don’t we embrace them instead of creating this quasitolerant mode? Now, we’re to the point where they’re not only accepted, but we’re celebrating it.” For U.S. Naval Hospital Sigonella Command Master Chief Jill Eastin, the celebration hits especially close to home. Eastin was raised by two mothers and has close friends in the LGBT community. “For this to finally be recognized in the military, I’m so happy I almost want to cry, that’s how I feel,” said Eastin. “It’s very, very important to me. This is significant in my life. I’m very proud that the Navy is taking this step in leading this country in change.” More than 80 people attended the event, which included a video presentation from NSA Mid-South’s celebration. U.S. Naval Hospital Sigonella Commanding Officer Capt. Patricia McDonald and Executive Officer Capt. John Lamberton also spoke. Lamberton noted the swiftness with which the military accepts change, and this issue was no different. “If you ever look at any change – any movement – that’s happening in the civilian world,” Lamberton told the attendees, “the movement is happening in the civilian world. In the military, we solidified it. Any significant movement that has taken place, it has been the military that has wrapped their arms around it.” The event culminated in a recitation of the Sailor’s Creed. It was the same creed written in 1993. This time, however, it’s words had a very new meaning. “We are all unique,” said McDonald. “We are a diverse group, but we are all one, one force fighting and protecting the freedoms of our nation and throughout the world.”

Summer fun begins in Nissoria
M
ark your calendar for the summer events taking place in Nissoria, a picturesque town nestled among the hills of the Erei Mountains in the Enna province in the heart of Sicily! This enchanting and small Sicilian village has a special relationship with the United States and Sigonella. Hundreds of Nissorini still live in the US since their ancestors moved to America in the late 1800s and early 1900's. Besides that, there is a tragic event which links Nissoria to the US. Vincenzo Di Fazio and Salvatore Lopes, two locals working in America, died in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center Sept. 11, 2001. In the years following the tragedy, the two Nissorini have been annually remembered in the town’s main square with a moving memorial which is traditionally attended by a Navy delegation from the base. The history of Nissoria is linked to two different areas of its territory: the sunny plateau, in the center of green valleys, which is where the present town lives, and the district now known as early as the sixth century tower that lived the ancient “Nysura,” a colony founded by immigrants from eastern lineage who introduced the cult of St. Gregory, Patriarch of the Armenians, who was revered as a patron of Nissoria up to 28 April 1855. Then, San Giuseppe or St. Joseph became the new patron saint of the city. The presence of substantial remains of fortification (thirteenth century) and the discovery (1953) of beautiful exhibits of Byzantine goldsmiths (VI - VII century) confirm the importance achieved by the site. Today, Nissoria is a village of 2,978 inhabitants living in a territory blessed with a breathtaking landscape, which covers an area of 6,162 hectares. The most important monument of Nissoria is definitely the Main Church (built in 1746) dedicated to patron of the city, St. Joseph. In recent years it has been enriched with magnificent marbles and frescoes by Elio Romano. Another must-see site is the Museo Etnoantropologico (Museum of ethno-anthropological Museum) which focuses on the town’s rural
culture and in particular the wheat cycle and the cycle of oil. Visitors can see how farmers live during the last century You can also visit the areas surrounding the town, where there are still ruins. The town’s summer events will begin with the traditional Festa di San Giuseppe (Feast of St. Joseph), the village’s beloved patron saint who is honored on the first Sunday of August. Other traditional festivals held throughout the year include the following: Life Day (first Sunday of February); Pentecost (Festival of the “pagghiari”); Palm Sunday; Painting event (July or August); Festival of wheat and pasta with breadcrumbs(last Saturday of April); Feast of San Francesco of Paola (May 23) and Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary (third Sunday of October). As for the local food specialties, make sure you sample ramette di cioccolato (biscuits with chocolate and almonds), biscotti con fichi e mandorle (biscuits with figs and almonds), pasta con la mollica (pasta with breadcrumbs), pane di casa condito con pepe e olive (fresh bread with pepper and olives), freshly-squeezed extra virgin olive oil. During the Feast of St. Joseph, the highlight of the summer events, the Church and the town of Nissoria work hand in hand to make sure that tourists and visitors can enjoy both religious celebrations and entertainment until late at night. The festivities usually begin on Wednesday, the festival’s eve, with the first religious rites and popular, generally takes place three days of spiritual preparation. On Saturday (Aug. 3), the festival of the emigrant takes whose highlight is the solemn celebration of the Holy Mass. Sunday (Aug. 4) marks the great feast day during which Nissorini attend the Holy Mass and the procession which takes place through the main streets of the town where the statue depicting St. Joseph is paraded accompanied by the faithful and by the town’s band. On Monday (Aug.5), the final day, the procession is repeated throughout the town’s historic
center. The Monday procession is very meaningful to the emigrants who return to Sicily to see it. During this procession, a group of devotees offer the traditional "bread of S. Joseph" to passersby as a sign of devotion to the saint, some of them offer money to their celestial protector. igonella archaeology buffs will be happy to hear that Piazza Armerina's Roman Villa will stay open late until 11 p.m. through Sept. 22. The Villa, under UNESCO protection since 1997, belonged to a member of the Roman senatorial aristocracy, perhaps a Roman governor, although some scholars argue that it was instead built and expanded onvdirect imperial commission. In terms of its beauty and complexity, it can be considered one of the most important examples of a state residence in the context of its contemporaries in the Roman West. The high profile of its patron is eloquently celebrated through an iconographic program that was stylistically influenced by African culture and unfolds in rich compositions decorating an impressive number of the rooms, both public and private in nature. The antique late fourth-century residence was built on top of a rustic villa dating to between the first century and the second half of the third century AD. Attributable to this earlier structure are the destruction layers near the monumental entrance portal and the baths, as well as archaeological finds, including some ceramic works and coins datable to 250-280 AD. Following the historical events of the fifth and sixth century, which changed the social and economic structure of the island as a result of the Vandal invasions and the Greco-Gothic war, the structures of the Villa were adapted to defensive purposes according to a precise fortification program this was revealed during the excavation campaign upon the discovery of support buttresses used for various rooms and of the closure of the surviving arcades of the aqueduct that was connected to the baths. The events of this period determined an initial process of abandonment and the functional transformation of the rooms, which would then come to be reoccupied in later centuries by new residences some built on top of the destruction layer of the pre-existing wall and others outside the perimeter of the late Empire building. Over the course of time, the historical evidence found around the site occupied by the late antique villa increased the interest of many scholars, who began exploring its remains starting in the first years of the nineteenth century and then again in the first years of the twentieth century. The discovery of such constituent richness immediately necessitated its protection, a need filled by the design and installation of laminated plastic structures. Further systematic excavation campaigns were carried out in the successive decades, up until recent times, which unearthed the remains of an extensive medieval settlement next to the villa structure. Starting in 2006, the site has been the subject of a systematic conservation recuperation intervention. The intervention concerns around 3,000 square meters of mosaic and “opus sectile” pavement and numerous polychrome wall paintings, as well as the three-dimensional reconfiguration of the spaces. Different formal and material methods were adopted in order to best preserve and use this residence, considered one of the most prestigious monumental testimonies to antiquity in the Mediterranean.
Italian motorcyclist Antonelli dies in tragic crash at World Supersport race in Moscow (Dailymail.co.uk) - Moscow - Team Goeleven Kawasaki motorcyclist Andrea Antonelli died last week following a crash during a World Supersport race at the Moscow Raceway, World Superbike organisers confirmed. In wet and rainy conditions, 25-year-old Italian Antonelli lost control of his Kawasaki bike on the first lap and his head collided with the Honda of countryman Lorenzo Zanetti, who was also unseated. Antonelli was immediately transported to the course’s medical centre but, given the seriousness of his injuries, it was decided not to risk helicopter transport to the nearest hospital and he died after failing to regain consciousness. The Supersport race was stopped and postponed for an afternoon restart before being cancelled indefinitely. The second World Superbike event was also cancelled after Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad Goldbet) had won the morning’s race from Chaz Davies. Antonelli becomes the second Italian to die in competition in two years after World Superbike rider Marco Simoncelli was killed during the 2011 Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang. One of the doctors to work on Antonelli following his accident, Dr Massimo Corbascio, believes there was 'absolutely nothing' the emergency clinic’s team could do to revive him. He told the Gazzetta dello Sport: '(Yamaha rider Massimo) Roccoli was hit by Andrea, who had already fallen. Then Zanetti was going 250km per hour and was not able to avoid him. 'He’s said himself he hit ‘something green’ before he fell off and was wounded himself. If a rider is hit in the skull by a bike that weighs 160kg at 250km, what can you do? 'He has gone to keep Marco Simoncelli company. We tried to revive Andrea immediately, but there was absolutely nothing we could do. Italian Prisons Launch Fashion Brand (IM) Workshops in women’s prisons across Italy are participating in an initiative supported by Fendi heiress Silvia Venturini to produce a fashion brand, Sigillo. The Sigillo project is run by the Cassa delle Ammende del Dipartimento dell’Amministrazione Penitenziaria Ministero della Giustizia (Correctional Facility of the Penitentiary Administration Department of the Ministry of Justice). The project is the first of its kind in Italy and is the fruit of more than three and a half years of research. It aims to help detainees acquire skills such as stitching and beading in an effort to rehabilitate prisoners, who can then use the skills acquired when they leave prison to enhance their job prospects. Research reveals that among detainees who work while in prison recidivism is reduced by 10%. The garments the detainees create for big fashion houses will be marketed under the Sigillo brand. Prisoners will also create items to order for corporate marketing. Among the items the women are making are t-shirts, handbags, sweatshirts, caps, tablecloths, napkins, runners, hand towels, aprons and bracelets.

Prisoners participate in the project on a voluntary basis and receive a small monthly salary, which they can spend on hygiene products and food in prison, or send to their families.
Sicilian Origins Of Italian Language Recognized (IM) - Siena - The origins of the Italian language may owe more to Sicilian writers than previously thought. Research conducted by a specialist in philology, Doctor Giuseppe Mascherpa of the University of Siena, has brought to light information that has reignited the debate regarding the origins of the Italian language. While carring out his research in a library in Lombardy, Mascherpa discovered texts by four Sicilian poets from the 13th century that were written around the sentences against some Guelph families. This was quite common at the time, as the notaries tried to leave no empty spaces on official documents. His research flies in the face of the traditional view that regards the Tuscan poet Dante Alighieri as the “father” of the Italian language. Such a viewpoint may have come about not just because of a lack of evidence to the contrary but perhaps because of the bias of later academics and scholars against Sicilian culture. The earliest written record of Italian poetry dates from the 1200s. The poetry was produced by the Sicilian School that flourished under King Frederick II at his court in Palermo and then that of his son Manfred. The recent research uncovered fragments of works by members of the Sicilian School, including Giacomo da Lentini, Percivalle Doria and Paganino da Sarzana, in Lombardy proving that their influence on the development of Italian poetry and language extended further north than previously thought. Their writing likely influenced that of subsequent north Italian poets and writers. Dante himself recognised Da Lentini as a master of the Sicilian School of lyrical poetry.
Reward of 2,000 euros offered in shooting of brown bear, Activists call for tougher penalties (ANSA) - Rome - Animal activists have recently offered a 2,000-euro reward for information about poachers who killed a black bear in a national park last weekend. Park authorities said the bear had been shot multiple times and described the death as an "execution" style of killing. The bear dubbed Stefano was shot on the Molise side of the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise. The reward has been offered by the AntiVivisection League (Lav), which called for a "fast and effective" investigation into the shooting as well as tougher penalties for poachers.
Venice launches clean-up of dead fish on canals' surfaces, Low oxygen, high algae to blame (ANSA) - Venice, - Venice has launched a large-scale clean-up of dead fish floating on the surface of canals. Scientists believe the fish are dying in parts of the lagoon where oxygen levels are particularly low, spawning large amounts of algae. Water so clear and beautiful it will ruin you for all other beaches. Off the coast of Agrigento, situated between Malta and Tunisia is the Island of Lampedusa. Reaching this location can be done by ferry, hydrofoil or car ferry, through Port Empedocle in Agrigento or by flight through Darwin Airlines. The ferry services begin running mid-June and continue through October. The cost is roughly 40-55 euro each way. Lampedusa is less than eight square miles around and is home to fewer than 5,000 residents. The island offers its most fascinating perspective from the sea, which can be viewed in a day’s time. While traveling the coastline, visitors can cool off as they
take a dip in the incredible swimming spots, explore the mysterious caverns and recline on the white sandy beaches. Surrounding the beaches are blinding white cliffs and intriguing caves. Spiaggia di Conigli, or Rabbit Beach, is one of the most popular beaches of the area. In 2013, it was rated the most beautiful beach in the world by Trip Advisor and the second most beautiful in the world by CNN. It is common for the endangered Loggerhead sea turtles to lay their eggs on the powder white sands of this beach. You can also spot the sea turtles as well as dolphins swimming gracefully along the shoreline.

strong group of young Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella basketball players were in full force, July 16 at the Midtown gymnasium during a basketball skills competition hosted by the Youth Sports department of NAS Sigonella Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR). “It’s a chance for these kids to get out and have some fun over the summer,” said Youth Sports Coordinator, Shannon Freeman. “Work on some basketball skills and get some fitness activities going and just have a good time.” The competitive events included dribbling and shooting drills, which consisted of the kids dribbling with both of their hands, free throw shots and a game of "around the world." All of the drills were timed for final scores. The competition concluded with a full game of four-on-four where the kids were able to run full court for three, five minute periods. “I’m glad the kids had an opportunity to come out, have fun and enjoy the game of basketball,” Shannon said. Shannon also said NAS Sigonella MWR and Youth Sports hope to create more competitive skill events for other sports in the future. “Throughout the year we’ll throw in different activities for kids to do,” Shannon said. “In June we did a bowling tournament for the kids, so stay tuned to every monthly Preview that MWR puts out.” The next event for Youth Sports will be the Splash-n-Dash at the NAS I gymnasium on Aug. 3.

DESSA, Ukraine (NNS) -- The Golden Swordsmen of Patrol Squadron (VP) 47 flew their first mission July 16 in support of the multinational surface ships operating in the Black Sea on the first day of the underway operations phase of Sea Breeze 2013. Flying the P-3C Orion aircraft, the crew used their expertise in maritime domain awareness to help provide a clearer surface contact picture to Ukrainian frigate Hetman Sahaydachniy (U130), Turkish fast attack craft TCG Meltem (P-334), and Romanian frigate Marasesti (F-111). "Our tasks during Sea Breeze is to work with our partners in training for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief," said Lt. Cmdr. Tim Ewing, VP-47 mission commander. "We work with our Ukrainian partners and the ships providing surveillance of the area and a common operating picture of what's going on in the area of responsibility." In a true demonstration of cooperation and partnership, the Ukrainian ship Sahaydachniy provided the command and control of the P-3. "The ship operated as the on-scene commander, using its radar picture to identify contacts of interest, and then had us go make a visual identification," said Ewing. "Essentially, we helped build the picture for the surface ships in maintaining maritime security." The security in Sea Breeze 2013 is necessary to support a humanitarian assistance and disaster relief scenario being executed cooperatively by the multinational exercise participants. "The exercise is a chance to practice with our partners in case of a real humanitarian assistance situation," said Lt. Nicole England, tactical coordinator. "We conducted maritime domain awareness operations today. We worked with the surface units to give a better understanding of what was around them." Even when the aircraft lands, the work for the crew isn't complete. The aircraft must remain ready to respond to emergent tasking. "Our job is to keep the aircraft ready to perform and to be ready to respond to tasking," said Aviation Ordnanceman 3rd Class Dustin Snider, one of the VP-47 maintainers. "When the aircraft comes in from an operation, we recover it, fix anything that needs fixed, and keep it ready to go back out." Additional air support to Sea Breeze 13 is being provided by a Ukrainian Mi-14 and a Ka-27, embarked in Sahaydachniy, and a German C-160, working with Ukrainian paratroopers. This year's participants include Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Canada, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Romania, Turkey, Ukraine and U.S., along with France, Germany, Libya, Lithuania, Qatar, and UAE, as observers. Sea Breeze 13, an annual multinational exercise in the Black Sea, is a combined air, land and maritime exercise designed to improve maritime safety, security and stability in the Black Sea by enhancing the capabilities of Partnership for Peace and Black Sea regional maritime security forces.
