Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) Liberty Program hosted an open house at Take 5, Jan. 22, with games, free food, and the unveiling of brand new equipment for single service members E-5 and below to use during their down time stationed at, or deployed to Naval Air Station Sigonella. “The renovation took place over a year and a half,” Liberty Program Coordinator, Christy Eschenbacher said. “It’s been a tremendous process and quite the experience, but now that it’s done, it looks amazing and we’re really happy to provide these services for our single service members who are away from their families.” Eschenbacher and other MWR Sigonella officials hope that the new renovations will help provide service members living on base more outlets to get out of

their barracks rooms and unwind in a non-stressful environment. “We upgraded the Wi-Fi quality, put in a new theater system, new poker tables, pool tables and just changed the overall atmosphere of the place,” Eschenbacher said. “We can do a lot more classes now and have the outside part renovated as well. The Wi-Fi reaches outside, so even when where closed, service members can still use their computers in a comfortable area.” The open house featured many events, including AFN Sigonella’s live Mid-Day Show from outside Take 5, a rockwall climbing challenge, corn-hole boards for use and an inflatable quarterback challenge provided by MWR Sigonella. Eschenbacher and other MWR officials were also on hand to provide anyone with answers about Take 5’s

brand new equipment and what Take 5 and The Liberty Program can provide. “We also had members of Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) here barbequing for us and Fleet and Family Support Center representatives here to talk to the service members as well,” Eschenbacher said. With an amazing turnout of service and community members during the open house, Eschenbacher hopes the renovations and new equipment will keep everyone coming back to Take 5. “Take 5 is specifically for our single service members,” Eschenbacher said. “It’s really important because it’s helping these guys and gals out. They're away from home, they're away from their families and we want this to be a nice comfortable area for them to go.”

Commanding Officer Capt. Chris Dennis Buon Weekend Sigonella! With the arrival of tomorrow, we are already one/twelfth complete with 2014! There is already so much happening around our community. Do you live on NAS2? Then you are part of our very large population of unaccompanied soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines living there and it is my sincere commitment to improve off-duty opportunities and make life in Sig' even better. NAS2 has many projects ongoing. Our gym renovation continues and should be ready by early Spring. The NAS2 pool too should reopen with the gym completion. Additionally, Take Five has been renovated and before Summer will have nice shade coverage in the front to compliment the extended WI-FI. Our Galley will soon renovate its BBQ area. Our vision is to make this area into an open air park for gatherings and picnics. All of these improvements will be even more inviting when the warm weather returns. Finally, MWR and many Base organizations and community partners continue to steadily increase off duty events. We have had Armed Forces Bowl

Punt, Pass and Kick, this weekend will be an MWR SuperBowl bonanza, the sixth and seventh Base-2-Base Fun Runs are just around the corner, and sports and special events run constantly on our terrific multi-purpose field. By summer, we will regularly have outdoor movies on NAS2. Let's shift gears. Remember, Sigonella and Sicilia are beautiful and inviting locations to live, work, and visit; however, no place is risk free and neither are we here. Recently, we had a group of patrons attacked by a group of youth on an ITT trip. Thankfully, our patrons were sober, kept their wits, persisted in finding Police assistance, and escaped with only bumps, scrapes and bruises. We are reviewing our Force Protection policy for ITT events and have already made adjustments to help avoid this type event from happening again. Still, we each must remain vigilant for our own personal security. This group did nothing wrong, just wrong place at the wrong time. But often Sig' Citizens fall victim to criminal behavior by not thinking ahead. Too many

times, we don't pay attention to details, but criminals usually do. Nothing is 100% effective against criminal behavior but planning to thwart criminals beats not planning every time. A few proven tips can make the difference between a lovely day and a...less-than-lovely day: think about the image your project (not all attracted attention is good...); pay attention to your surroundings (the safety of a town can change one block to the next); don't carry large amounts of cash and all of your identification and credit cards (only carry the bare minimum and keep small bills and change in a pocket so your wallet can remain out of sight); travel in groups (there is safety in numbers); ladies - keep purses zipped, over your shoulders, and against your body - if in a car, ensure windows are up and doors are locked; no one should wear conspicuous and valuable jewelry - these items invite muggings... finally, watch where you park and what you leave in your car. In closing, winter in Sicily is wonderful, just as is Spring,

Summer and Fall. Enjoy all of the terrific Blood Oranges which are ripe now, ski Mt. Etna, visit ruins while the weather is cool - do ANYTHING other than only hanging out on base. In the meantime, if you have requests, concerns, good ideas, frustrations, or just want to follow up on a previous suggestion, don't hesitate to contact me at http://ice.disa. mil or at our CNIC NAS Sigonella webpage under the drop down "CO Suggestion Box." Ci vediamo Sigonella!

Service members, especially those who are deployed, are constantly dealing with ways to control stressful situations. Whether it’s the long work days that get to them or just the knowledge of being away from loved ones, service members need to find healthy activities or hobbies to combat the stress and live a good lifestyle. For Operation Specialist 2nd Class Billy Adkins, who works for Command Task Force 67, his way of beating the stress has always been through playing the guitar. Now, Adkins has channeled his skills into helping others beat stress through guitar “Guitar is something I enjoy playing,” Adkins said. “I feel that it helps relieve stress and it also creates an environment where you can step out of the box.” Adkins offers free guitar lessons at Take 5 every

It’s going to be something that’s going to positively motivate you to try harder not only outside of work, but also improve your morale here.” Adkins hopes his classes will inspire other service members, particularly single Sailors and those living on base or deployed here to get out of their rooms and try new hobbies, whether that means taking his class or not. “I feel that I can help give this outlet to our single Sailors,” Adkins said. “But, I just want to encourage everyone to pursue a hobby while they’re out here. Having a hobby is often something that you don’t need much money to pursue and it’s just a really good outlet for stress.”

Comment regarding Jingle Jog:

“On December 20, 2013, a Sig M/HS "JINGLE JOG" was held. It was a welcome opportunity for students to pursue a healthy option leading up to the winter break. The execution was flawless. The Sig Fitness center laid out the course, manned a water station, and then cleared the course. They cheered the students in their endeavor and supported this healthy alternative for enjoying the holiday season. There was an excellent partnership between the school, the school liaison office, base security and the Fitness Center. Together, these organizations made this event a positive and successful one. Job Well Done, Team Sigonella!”

Catania Celebrates Patroness Saint with Three-Day Festival welcomed the return from Turkey of the Saint’s relics on Aug. 17, 1126. Historic chronicles tell that it was a great feast for the Catania community whose residents waived white handkerchiefs to show their enthusiasm. Other historic accounts link the white tunic tradition to either the ancient Egyptian cult of Goddess Isis or the penitential garment worn by priests. Giorgio Maniace, a Byzantine general, stole the relics as a war trophy and took them to Constantinople (the ancient Istanbul) in 1040. Devotees take part in the festival bringing on procession the “Cannalori,” and the “Vara.” Cannalori are tall wax candles surrounded by a heavy (up to 1,500 lbs.) candelabrum-shaped gilded wooden structure. They are decorated with statues depicting angels, saints, pennons and flowers. Scenes from the Saint Agata martyrdom are also carved on their sides. Therefore, Quintianus, miffed by Agata’s firmness, had her underwent terrible tortures such as cutting off her breast. This detail was often depicted in the Christian medieval paintings as a peculiar characteristic of Saint Agata. Tradition also tells about prodigious events that occurred while Agata was in prison such as the apparition of St. Peter who comforted and healed all her wounds. Eventually, after repeated tortures Quintianus had Agata condemned to the stake. But while she was burning alive a violent earthquake struck Catania. This natural disaster was welcomed by the Catanians as a sign of God who wanted the tortures inflicted to Agata to be over. Thus, a riot broke out in the city forcing Quintianus to stop the infamous execution. Agata was then brought back to her prison where she died right after. It was Feb. 5, 251 AD. Later on the same day, the evil Quintianus, who was fleeing because he feared the riot, drowned in the river Simeto.

Festival Schedule

Feb. 3 celebration begins with holy masses celebrated at the Cathedral from 7 to 10 a.m. Later at Noon, the solemn “Processione per l’Offerta della cera” (Offering of the wax procession) leaves from the Church of St. Agata “Alla Fornace” toward the Cathedral. Eleven Cannalori representing some local guilds head the procession. Parades of the city’s banners followed by the historic “Carrozzi du Sinatu” (18th century Catania Senate Carriages that are permanently on view at the city hall in Piazza Duomo) also follow the procession. All Catania civilian and military authorities take part in the procession. A half-hour later, Catania Fire Brigade officials offer a floral gift to the Saint. The celebration day will end in the evening with a spectacular fireworks show in Piazza Duomo called “I fochi do tri” or the fireworks performed on the evening of Feb.3rd. Feb. 4 begins with the display of the saint’s relics at the cathedral at 5 a.m. After that, the traditional “Messa dell’Aurora” (Dawn Holy Mass) is held at 6 a.m. at the Cathedral. It is one among the most intense and moments of the festival. The “Cammaredda,” the small room located inside the Cathedral, where the relics and the Saint Agata simulacrum are permanently kept, is opened before a crowd of moved and applauding and screaming devotes who compete for the best spot to see the saint statue. Later, a procession, during which the Saint Agata bust and relics tour throughout the city, starts at 7 a.m. It leaves from Porta Uzeda (in Italian, Uzeda gate) in Piazza Duomo where the Catania Archbishop performs the offering of a candle before the icon of the Madonna della Lettera. Right after, the procession proceeds through via Dusmet, via Calì, piazza Cutelli, via Vittorio Emanuele, piazza dei Martiri, via VI Aprile, piazza Giovanni XXIII (train station), viale della Libertà, piazza Iolanda, via Umberto, via Grotte Bianche, piazza Carlo Alberto (Catania outdoor market) and then piazza Stesicoro where devotees who pull the carriage show their skills performing the challenging “Capuccini slope.” It consists in running while dragging the heavy carriage, up to the Church of Saint Agata “La Vetere,” located in piazza San Domenico. There the procession stops for a couple of hours to allow devotees to rest. In the late afternoon at 6 p.m., the tour starts again from piazza San Domenico through via Plebiscito, via Vittorio Emanuele, piazza Risorgimento, piazza Palestro, via Garibaldi, via Plebiscito, via Dusmet and eventually back again to Piazza Duomo through Porta Uzeda. Feb. 5 begins with a solemn holy mass, celebrated at the Cathedral at 10:30 a.m. by all Sicily’s Cardinals, bishops jointly with local priests. Traditionally, a highranking religious guest of honor leads the mass. This year the guest will be Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco,

JANUARY 31, 2014 Archbishop of Genoa. During the mass, the “Cappella Musicale del Duomo” (the Cathedral Cantata Singers) sing a magnificent High Mass. In the afternoon, another bishop celebrates a holy mass at 4:30 p.m. at the cathedral. Later, the most spectacular Saint Agata procession starts from Piazza Duomo at 5 p.m. Crossing via Etnea it moves ahead up to piazza Cavour. The procession, which goes on all night long, reaches its climax when it arrives at the slope of via San Giuliano on its way back to Piazza Duomo in the morning on Feb. 6. Running fast, devotees pull the Saint carriage up to via San Giuliano. It is a spectacular and dangerous proof of physical strength and resistance that could only be performed by the strongest devotees as the Vara weighs several tons. Driven by pure devotion, thousands of people stay up until dawn to participate in this unique moment. At the end of the hard climb, the crowd releases the tension with a liberating thunderous applause. Eventually, the saint is brought back to the Cathedral. Complementing the festival, the traditional “Fiera di Sant’Agata” or Saint Agata Fair, featuring over 100 booths selling clothes, shoes, toys and food will be set up all day long at the Catania port through Feb. 5. For more information and detailed schedules, visit http://www. circolosantagata.it/

St. Agata Traditional Sweets For those of you with a sweet tooth, the Saint Agata festival has a lot to offer. Don’t forget to linger in the pasticcerie (pastry shops) and festival’s street booths to taste the traditional “Olivette di Sant’Agata”or Saint’Agata’s small olives) and the traditional torrone (nougat). Those olive-shaped almond sweets are related to the Saint Agata celebrations because they remind of an episode occurred during her life. Tradition holds that, when Agata was on her way to stand trial before Quintianus, she bent to tie her sandal. As she did that, an olive miraculously sprouted where she had stepped. After St. Agata’s death, those olives were preserved as relics. Olivette could also be covered with chocolate. “Torrone” or nougat is made with sugar, honey, egg whites, almonds and hazelnuts. As tradition says, it was first prepared for the wedding banquet of Bianca Maria Visconti and the duke of Milan, Francesco Sforza that took place in Cremona in 1441. Historic sources tell that the chefs shaped the Torrone as the 13th century tower, which still flanks Cremona’s cathedral, because it was included in bride’s dowry. The tower was named “Torrione” (big tower), thus the dessert was given the name “Torrone.” Historic sources say the guests of the wedding banquet, who came from every part of Italy and Europe, were so impressed by the savory taste of Torrone that they praised its delicacy as they went back home. Therefore, Torrone earned a worldwide reputation. Torrone has many different flavors. The traditional hard white one includes almonds or hazelnuts, but it can be enriched with liqueurs like rum, Gran Marnier and Strega; chocolate and also frosted with lemon, pistachio or orange icings.

H EADLINES WWII Bomb Injures Workers in Italy (ANSA) - Turin A World War II bomb went off outside Turin Friday, badly injuring two construction workers who uncovered it. Sebastian Vieru, 27, had his right hand amputated, together with some fingers on his left hand which doctors are trying to save. He also suffered second-degree burns on his face, on his chest, and injuries to his internal organs. Ovidiu Chelaru, 48, was undergoing emergency surgery for unknown injuries. "I ran out immediately to see what had happened when I heard the explosion," said a colleague, Valentin Chelaru. "I was in the storage area, otherwise I would also have been involved". Police explosives experts are searching the area to ensure no other unearthed explosives are located there.

Italy's House Approves 'Google Tax' (Bloomberg) Italy's Parliament on Monday passed a new tax on web advertising, called "Google tax," which will require Internet companies to sell ads from locally- registered companies, instead of from units based in havens such as Ireland, Luxembourg and Bermuda. The tax has stirred controversy, with some lawyers saying it probably violates European Union laws regarding non-discrimination over commercial activity and could be subject to legal challenges. In July, at the request of the Group of 20 nations, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development proposed a blueprint to fight strategies used by companies such as Google Inc, Apple Inc and Yahoo! Inc to shift taxable profits into havens. Italy is the first major European government to pass legislation to combat the problem of moving corporate taxable earnings into havens, which costs Europe and the US over $100 billion a year, since the OECD proposal.

Mafia Wanted to 'Blow Up Leaning Tower of Pisa Palermo (AKI) The world-famous the Leaning Tower of Pisa was

among several Italian monuments that the Sicilian Mafia planned to bomb, an informant testified at a trial in Palermo on Thursday. "Imagine if Italy were to wakes up and find the Tower of Pisa no longer existed," mafia informant Gioacchino La Barbera citing late mafia chief Nino Gioe as saying. Other targets that had been considered were the Papal Archbasilica of St. John Lateran in Rome, the church of San Giorgio in Velabro in Roma and the Georgofili Academy in Florence, La Barbera told the trial investigating links between organised crime and the Italian state in the 1990s. At the trial, jailed mafia boss Toto Riina and other Sicilian mafia bosses are on the dock along with former police bosses and senior politicians, on charges of negotiating a secret non-aggression pact in the early 1990s. The Sicilian mafia had plotted to blow up the current Italian Senate speaker and former anti-mafia prosecutor Pietro Grasso. It wanted to target the police captain who arrested Riina, Sergio Di Caprio as well as prominent politicians including former justice minister Claudio Martelli, La Barbarera stated.

Ciao, Sicilia ... by jackie Gutierrez trembath NAS Sigonella Public Affairs

Almost three years ago, I was just an American newly stationed in Sicily. Now, I feel as though Sicily is my home. Then, faces were nameless. Now, I have family in my friends here. In April of 2011, Sicily was just a place on a global map. Forever more, it is a part of my soul. Living in Sicily afforded me the opportunity to travel. From Sicily, I was able to visit Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Malta, The Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom and Vatican City. While I enjoyed the experiences in each country, Italy will always be my favorite. Trying to narrow down what I love most about living in Sicily is like trying to pick my favorite painting in a gallery full of masterpieces. There are so many reasons why I am madly in love with this beautiful island. I have never seen such vibrant colors of red and orange in a sunset as I have in Sicily, almost as if the sky were on fire. Sometimes, the sun sets against a muted sky of soft pinks and blues. Combine the sunsets with the magnificent backdrop of the Sicilian landscapes and it's like looking at piece of art. I want to stare at it and remember every brush stroke . From the coast to the valleys to the cityscapes, Sicily's has some of the most incredible views I feel like I'm living in a postcard. I fell in love with the Baroque architecture in Acireale, Pedara and Trecastagni, the coastline of Aci Trezza and Cefalù, the view of Mt. Etna from the Greek theatre inTaormina, the windmills and salt pools set against the

seascape in Marsala ... there are too many places to name, but I have tried to capture each one to memory. When I first moved to Sicily, I foolishly lamented that there wasn't a Starbucks and couldn't imagine surviving three years without my custom-made caffeine fix. Then, I discovered Italian espresso, and now I can't fathom living the rest of my life without it. In the 17 countries I have visited, Italian caffè is second to none. I will miss buying a vino from the old man in Zafferana who produces his own wine and fills glass jugs full for less than five euro. Having experienced shopping for fresh produce, meats and seafood at the market in Catania where the streets are lined with colorful treasures and the air is filled with vendors voices announcing their selections and prices will make shopping at my local grocery store in the states seem mundane. I will miss buying fresh veggies on my way home from a random street vendor set up on the side of the road with a makeshift cardboard sign and fresh garden selections displayed in the bed of a three-wheeled vehicle. Living in Sicily has made me a more confident driver. When I first moved here, I avoided Catania. The mere thought of driving in the traffic there gave me anxiety. After almost three years braving the roads here, I know I can drive anywhere, though I will have to be more mindful of traffic laws and speed limits.

When I return to the United States, I know everything will seem so different. From the food to the sights and sounds to the moments shared with friends. Every Sunday, that I wasn't traveling to another country to play tourist, I'd meet my friends for caffè and a cornetto before walking to the Antique Market in Piazza Dante. We'd search for treasures and talk about our week. The items I found at that market will always remind me of Sicily and of those Sundays spent with friends. I will miss the ringing of the church bells, one of my favorite sounds of Sicily. I love how they announce the time, even the quarter hour. I will even miss the sound of random fireworks, sometimes filling the sky at seven in the morning. I will miss the many festivals that were celebrated in the various cities. I am glad I took the opportunity to witness the parades of Patron Saint's relics in Belpasso and Nicolosi, crowds of people filling the streets. I will long for summers in Sicily, especially in Aci Trezza where kayaking around the Isole Dei Ciclopi, the great stones said to have been thrown at Odysseus in The Odyssey felt like a great adventure and snorkeling in the clear blue sea amidst the schools of fish and sea urchins clinging to the rocks made me feel like Jacques Cousteau. I will miss seeing Mount Etna every day. I appreciated her even more when I hiked up the side, sans a trail, following the gondala, my feet sinking into the rich ashy soil with every step. Although she is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, I never did get to see any large eruptions. She seemed to time those for when I was traveling in another country. But, I did get to witness lava flowing down her side several times and was always

captivated by its magnificence. Most of all, I will miss the people I have met. Mustafà, the road vendor, greets me every morning on my ride into work from Acireale. He knows my car and my name and makes it a point to come and say hello is I get stuck waiting at the intersection he works at. The conversation is always the same, with only small changes, usually about the weather. "Ciao, Jackie. Tutto a posto?," he'll inquire. "Sì, tutto bene. Come stai?," I'll reply. Just as the light is about to turn, he wishes me "Buona giornata, buon lavoro" and waves as I drive off.The other day, our conversation was a little different. In his best English, he pointed to his eye and said, "I look for you," then putting his hand over his heart he said, "Quando ti vedo, il mio cuore è contento." My Italian is good enough that I understood, "When I see you, my heart is content." I will miss my Italian friends, Alfio and Grazia, and all my American friends ... each of you have became a part of my family. I have so many wonderful memories that words fail me when I try to express just how much you all mean to me. I never thought I would love a place so much, people so much. I took a wrong turn the other day and ended up at Capo Mulini at the end a street with a cove that lead to the sea. I sat for while and watched as the water rushed against the stones and thought to myself how blessed I am. Although my time living in Sicily passed before me like a minute in an hour, it changed me, the core of me. My life is richer because of the time I was given here. And when I think of the places I have seen and the people that will always be a part of my life, il mio cuore è contento. More than content, it is bursting with gratitude.

Winter is a season that is often characterized by the blues. Whether service members and their families are prone to S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder), the let-down after the holidays, or simply homesickness, winter can be a difficult time for many. If you are experiencing the blues, you are not alone. Millions each year face the predictable winter blues and search for relief. A brief survey of the Internet on the blues reveals a number of reasonable solutions to occasional and mild depression. Medical experts recommend a regimen of adequate sleep, proper diet and nutrition, regular physical exercise, outdoor activities with greater exposure to the sunlight, laughter-filled activities, bonding with friends and family, etc. These are simple and sane coping strategies for battling the blues. For acute and persistent depression, consult health care professionals with U.S. Naval Hospital Sigonella, counselors with Fleet and Family Support Center, and chaplains with the Religious Ministries Department. What are the practical ways that religion can positively impact the blues? There is a growing body of evidence that spirituality has therapeutic value for both personal happiness and physical health. For instance, a 2007 study conducted at Duke University indicated that in a number of patients who suffered from depression that those under medical care who were genuinely religious recovered from depression in a way that others did not. Research demonstrates the beneficial correlation between spirituality and wellness in the following ways. Hopefully, these insights will help you beat the blues--before they beat you!

• • • • •

Every human being searches for meaning and purpose in life. Spirituality is a source of hope and renewal. Faith is always an opportunity for new beginnings and second chances. We need God’s grace to forgive others and ourselves. Haven’t we all made mistakes? I have. Holding on to grudges is a medically proven cesspool for emotional misery. In worship we learn to be grateful for our many blessings. Gratitude fosters a positive attitude that counteracts any negative influences. Religion can forge resilience through perseverance. Faith helps us believe that in spite of difficult times that through divine inspiration tomorrow will be a better day. Belonging to a group of believers provides an emotional connection which combats loneliness and isolation. Getting involved in church can furnish a healthy support system. Prayer can give us the peace that transcends human comprehension (Philippians 4:7). The famous Serenity Prayer can guide us in discouraging circumstances: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.” Service, which is at the heart of religion, is medicine for the soul according to recent studies. In doing good for others, we feel good about ourselves. Ralph Waldo Emerson said: "It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself."

by MC3 cameron bramham NAS Sigonella Public Affairs How old do you have to be to be a Sig citizen? Apparently not that old, especially if you ask the girl scouts from Brownie Troop 2. Brownie Troop 2 did something that most adults wouldn’t even do, devoted their time to cleaning up trash around NAS I, particularly around Midtown and the Land Annex fields. The project started as a scavenger hunt where one of their tasks was to find a piece of trash. However, after the scavenger hunt finished, the girls realized how much trash was leftover and dedicated their next task to be a base clean-up. The girls ended up filling 6 trash bags of waste and all agreed enthusiastically that their time spent cleaning-up was fun and even though they are young, Brownie Troop 2 scouts definitely understand how important their act of community service was for Sigonella.

On Jan. 18 Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Sigonella’s Liberty program took 12 service members to Comunità di Emmaus in Nissoria. The center focus for the community relations project was on rehabilitation for youth who have had experience with alcohol abuse, drugs, sexual abuse, and other less fortunate circumstances. The work done there was labor intensive, moving rocks to form paths that will be used for therapeutic recreation with horses, installing a new kitchen for ten new people who would be coming to live at the facility on short notice, and carrying

and stacking wood that would be used to keep the center warm, among other jobs that would take weeks to complete without our assistance. The staff working at Comunità di Emmaus was very appreciative and noted the positive impact that the community relations project would have on the children staying there. The Liberty program provides a monthly volunteer opportunity to single service members. On Feb. 22, we will return to Comunità di Emmaus. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Take 5 at 624-5602 to sign up!

VP-9 CSADD Chapter Celebrates MLK Day with Volunteerism by LCDR Jeremy Yarbrough Patrol Squadron (VP) 9

Members of the Patrol Squadron (VP) 9 Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSAAD) chapter commemorated the Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday, Jan. 20, by volunteering alongside members of the Catania community. The 2014 Martin Luther King Jr. Day theme, "A Day On! Not a Day Off!," is meant to motivate people across the nation to observe the federal holiday as a day of service to help out their surrounding community. VP-9 Sailors spent their day at the Parrochia S. Giovanni Apostolo, [Church of Saint John the Apostle]. The “Golden Eagle” volunteers refurbished the outside of the church’s new community center. They were joined by a team of local youths from a nearby school, IPSIA Enrico Fermi. Father Orazio Bonaccorsi, the project leader, was delighted by the joint effort and particularly pleased with the presence of the 15 Sailors from VP-9. He said, “Once again, you have shown your superb support to our com-

munity,” referencing the clean up of a local amphitheatre completed by the Golden Eagles on their last deployment. The CSAAD volunteers shared a common purpose with their Italian partners. The volunteers from IPSIA Enrico Fermi are part of a school program called “Legality and Morality”. Their leader, Professor Giuseppe Conte said, “The aim of the program is to introduce young Italian youths to giving back to their community and having fun in a healthy and uplifting environment.” Similarly, CSADD is a peerto-peer mentorship program geared at Sailors 18 to 25 years old. VP-9’s CSADD chapter, led by Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class (Aviation Warfare) Angelina Harris, looks for positive ways to build camaraderie and leadership through community service. “It was a pleasure working with IPSIA Enrico Fermi to serve a great purpose in the Catania community,” said Harris. “We look forward to opportunities to

work with them again in the future.” Once both teams got acquainted, they quickly started working. By the end of the day, the volunteers had managed to sand and prime the entire building as well as fully paint over a third of the structure. The project was coordinated with the Naval Air Station Sigonella Public Affairs Office as part of the base’s Community Relations program and was arranged by Dr. Alberto Lunetta. VP-9 is assigned to Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 2, Marine Corps Base Hawaii. The squadron consists of 71 officers and 276 enlisted personnel who maintain and operate eight P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft. The squadron is forward deployed to the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility and is currently assigned to Command Task Force (CTF) 67, responsible for tactical control of deployed maritime patrol and reconnaissance squadrons throughout the European and African areas of responsibility.
