NAS Sigonella Sailor awarded Purple Heart after frocking ceremony

SIGONELLA, Sicily (May, 30, 2013) - Master-at-Arms 1st Class Leroy Williams Jr. shakes hands with Capt. Chris Dennis, commanding officer, Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella after Dennis awarded Williams with the Purple Heart after the NAS Sigonella frocking ceremony in front of the NAS Sigonella Administration building on NAS II, May 30. M

aster-at-Arms 1st Class Leroy Williams Jr. was one of 33 Sailors who were advanced to the next paygrade during the Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella frocking ceremony on NAS II, May 30. However, Williams received much more than a frocking certificate and a new set of chevrons, as NAS Sigonella Commanding Officer Capt. Chris Dennis presented Williams with the Purple Heart for injuries he sustained from an improvised explosive device (IED) while deployed to Afghanistan. “This award is a representation of a lot of things,” Dennis said. “It’s a representation of a lot of professionalism and a lot of devotion to duty, and love. I just want to make sure that we all understand that and take time to appreciate [Petty Officer] Williams, the dog handlers, and all of the fine folks at [NAS Sigonella] Security.” Williams, attached to NAS Sigonella

Military Working Dog Division, was down range where he was tasked to the front with his canine “Dinomt,” to search for hidden explosive devices. “We were looking for a couple of high valued targets, considered to be terrorists,” Williams said. “When we got close to a Taliban check point, a remote detonation was set off that killed my dog.” Williams said the eight pound explosive device detonated three feet away from him. Dinomt was in between the bomb, Williams and an Explosive Ordinance Disposal Technician. “He actually saved my life; saved both of our lives” he added. Williams suffered from Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and shrapnel in his leg, but realizes that if it weren't for Dinomt, he would not have been able to receive the Purple Heart or his 1st class chevrons. “Fortunately we’re both still here,” Williams said. “Every day forward, I take my dog with me. We don’t leave our dogs, no matter what.

When he was killed, I picked him up, put him in my sleeping bag and carried him about 500 meters in order to get to a medevac.” As humbled as Williams was for receiving the Purple Heart, he says he is very grateful for the award. “It means a lot to me,” Williams said. “If you receive this award you’re not normally alive to hold it. Because I’m still here, I’m able to move forward, teach future dog handlers, and continue to do my job, which means a great deal to me. I’ll carry it with honor, pride, and the memory of my dog.” Although receiving a Purple Heart is a tremendous honor for Williams, he did not want the spotlight of the day to shine only on him. He was, after all, frocked with other NAS Sigonella Sailors. “Congratulations to everybody that’s here,” Williams said. “This is a huge and great accomplishment. I always love to see people advance to whatever paygrade. Good luck in your future endeavors!”

Direct Line

NAS Sigonella Command Master Chief, David Graham Buongiorno Sigonellans! Let me start with a well-deserved “CONGRATULATIONS” to those graduating from high school today. This is a significant milestone in your life. It marks the end of one journey and the beginning of another. Some of you will move on to college, others will embark on military careers. Whatever path you take, don’t forget the lessons of determination and dedication you learned throughout your school years. Many of these lessons will continue to serve you as you face the new challenges of your bright futures. Good luck to you all! On that same note, many of you will be marking milestones in your college education June 12. Congratulations to all of you accomplishing this task. It is never easy balancing the workload of an education and a full-time job, sometimes logging extremely long hours. But your perseverance has paid off and you have reached your goal! Whether it’s a master’s, bachelor’s, or associate’s degree, this has been a daunting task. For those preparing to take it to the next level, good luck to you as well! BRAVO ZULU to all the petty

officers who were frocked May 30. For some, this has been a long, hard road. But again, because of your strength of character, you overcame whatever obstacles were in your path and succeeded. For those who plan on continuing their Navy careers, I hope I can be there to see the same people move on to the next pay grade! Congratulations and keep up the hard work! This is also a time to reflect on one of the greatest moments of our Naval heritage, the Battle of Midway. Fought from June 4 - 7, 1942, it marked a major turning point in our battle against a superior enemy force. With grit and determination shown by our forces in the Pacific, they stemmed the tide of aggression in the Pacific theater, laying the foundation for ultimate victory in 1945. Never forget the sacrifices of those who went before you and always draw lessons from their experiences. Those Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen emerged victorious despite the odds against them. Lastly, I want to remind everyone about the importance of recycling. Not only is it the right thing to do for our environment, but it

is required by Navy regulations. There are several DoD directives and executive orders that give guidelines on recycling policies for ships and shore installations. All offices should be separating their garbage and there are bins located throughout the base, both NAS I and NAS II, that make it easy to dispose of garbage properly. Do your part by taking just a few seconds to put your trash in the right place. The Navy has been working hard to decrease the amount of waste it generates and needs the help of all hands to make it effective. Have a great weekend and be safe out there!

T

he stories are out there. Talented Sailors sent home because they had been denied approval to reenlist. While attempting to balance the force, foundations for Sailors across the Navy were being rocked to their core. Now that some of the smoke has cleared, the glasses are being readjusted to focus on the way ahead. Step one - dismantling Perform to Serve. Through the Navy's newest career management program, Career Navigator launching June 3, a new reenlistment process more advantageous for Sailors has been created. Under this new program, all eligible and command-approved E-6 Sailors will be approved for reenlistment on their first application. While there is still a need to tell the career counselor of Sailors' intentions, if they desire to reenlist and have command approval to do so, they will be given reenlistment approval on their first application. For eligible Sailors E5 and below in skillsets or ratings that are open (formerly known as under-manned), 100 percent will receive approval to reenlist on their first application. E5 and below Sailors in skillsets or ratings that are balanced or competitive (traditionally over-manned), or that have special requirements such as the nuclear community, will receive information sooner about their ability to reenlist in rate, or opportunity to convert to a different rate or transition to the Reserve Component. Many of these Sailors will also receive approval to reenlist on their first application depending on the manning in their year group. Chief of Naval Personnel officials say they will update the manning status of every rating every two weeks to give Sailors an accurate view of where the stand in the Career Navigator system. This is good news for most. With superstar Sailors being shown the door after consistent superior performance, many will be happy to see the reenlistment process evolve into something that is actually based on performance and left up to the command for approval for approximately 75 percent of the force.

Italy marks Republic Day with low-cost military parade

Russell Crowe, 'Man of Steel' on Tap for Sicily's Taormina Film Fest

ROME (AFP) - Rome's annual military parade to mark Republic Day was given an austerity make-over on Sunday, proceeding without the usual spectacular air shows or tank displays in a sign of the times in recession-hit Italy. More than 3,000 soldiers, police officers, parachutists and other members of the civilian and military corps marched on foot in a low-cost version of the parade along the Via dei Fori Imperiali -- a broad avenue through the ancient Roman Forum that was built by Italy's fascist dictator Benito Mussolini in the 1930s. The costs of the national celebration were cut to 1.5 million euros ($1.9 million) this year, compared with 2.0 million euros in 2012 and 4.4 million euros in 2011 -- meaning horses, tanks and other costly parade traditions were left out of Sunday's event. After the end of World War II and the killing of Mussolini, Italians voted in a popular referendum on June 2, 1946 to abolish the monarchy.

Every year on June 18, the community of Naro pays homage to Saint Calogero, its beloved patron saint, with a spectacular religious festival featuring processions, arts and crafts and fireworks. (Photo by Giuseppe Stimolo)

Naro honors Saint Calogero

T

he Festa di San Calogero is undoubtedly one of the greatest religious festivals held annually in several towns of Western Sicily. Saint Calogero is worshipped by the town of Naro for his miracle-working power which is said to have rescued the town from earthquakes and plague. As the local saying goes: “San Caloriu di Naru fa li grazi a cantaru " (Saint Calogero from Naro performs many miracles.” Every year, on June 18, the population of this picturesque Norman-Arab styled small town in the Agrigento province holds a spectacular religious festival to pay tribute to their celestial patron. Saint Calogero, whose name means “beautiful elder,” was born in the 5th century. He was one of the numerous monks who spread Christianity in southern Italy during that time. Those monks were very popular because they led a deeply religious and ascetic life by fasting, preaching and helping the local population. Due to Saint Calogero’s popularity, his name became synonymous with “good friar” and wise man, so Byzantine monks were all nicknamed “Calogero.” This explains why some historic sources tell that there were several “Saint Calogeros” in Sicily at the time. The reality is that there is only one Calogero, who was born in 466 B.C. in Chalcedon (modern Turkey) in Asia Minor. In the 17th century, as reported by local historian Salvatore Schembri, Jesuits priests confused the region of Chalcedon with the Tunisian city of Carthage so they made the world believe that Calogero was African. Ever since, Saint Calogero has always been depicted as a black saint, although he was actually white. Today, he is still nicknamed the “Il Santo Nero” (the black saint). According to Lillo Novella, another local historian, Saint Calogero’s skin is indeed dark because he embodies the hard work of the peasants in the fields. That is why this religious festival is held in June during harvest time. Saint Calogero is also known as “the hermit” for his mystic life and “the thaumaturge” as he performed several miracles. According to tradition, he was

sent by Pope Felix II (who is a saint himself) to convert Sicilians to Christianity. Calogero, who travelled with other two saints (Gregorio and Demetrio), landed in the island of Lipari (Aeolian Archipelago) where he first settled. He then moved to Marsala, which he left right away because of a terrible anti-Christian persecution in which both his travel companions were martyred. He eventually arrived in Sciacca, in the Agrigento province, in 526 AD. There, he chose to settle in a cave on Mount Cronio, which is famous for its vapor caves (stufe di San Calogero). Saint Calogero then crisscrossed Sicily, moving from one cave to another. He stayed in both small towns such as Salemi, Termini Imerese and big cities such as Palermo, Catania and Siracusa. He also lived in a Naro cave, where townspeople erected a sanctuary to honor him. According to tradition, the most famous legend about Saint Calogero is the one telling of the wounded doe whose milk fed the hermit during the last years of his life. One day, while Saint Calogero was praying, Ascanio, a local hunter, wounded the doe that sought shelter in the hermit’s cave. Moved by pity for the suffering animal whose neck was pierced by an arrow, the saint performed a miracle by healing the doe on the spot, right in front of the astonished hunter, who fell on his knees begging for forgiveness and converting to Christianity. On the festival eve (June 17), pilgrims come from the neighboring towns, walking (some of them barefoot) for miles to throng the sanctuary. Today, walking barefoot for hours could be considered as a “physically challenging” tradition, but it is nothing compared to what happened in the old times when some pilgrims would drag their tongues from the gate of the church all they way up to the main altar. On Tuesday, June 18, the festa begins in the early morning with devoti (devotees) crowding the sanctuary, which is located in piazza Roma, to attend holy masses (which are held every half hour) and walk barefoot to fulfill a “prumisa” (the promise) vow. They bring with them

votive breads shaped as the part of the body that they believe was healed through the intercession of the beloved patron saint. Some of the devotees come from all over the world including New York where St. Calogero is also venerated. After the traditional distribution of elaborate blessed votive breads, the procession begins. Devotees participate in the festival to express gratitude to the saint for a recovery from an illness or for having survived a natural disaster. According to tradition, Calogero is said to be particularly invoked by people affected by hernias as well as by the hearing and speech impaired. Later, around 11 a.m. the beautiful chalk statue which is covered by silver, is placed on a carriage called “straula,” which is then pulled by hundreds of crying devotees from all ages and social status, who scream “Viva Diu e San Calò!” (Long live God and Saint Calogero!) along viale Umberto (main street) for about an hour until it reaches the matrice main church located in via Dante. In the evening, a shorter procession, during which the statue is transported on a mechanized float, begins at 6 p.m. from the main church to the Church of San Francesco in piazza Garibaldi. Tradition has it that devotees bring a handkerchief with which they wipe the “sweat” from the saint’s statue (which is “tired” for the long procession) and keep it as a talisman against illnesses. Before you leave the festival don’t forget to visit the town’s architectural attractions. Naro boasts breathtaking Baroque and medieval historic sites and buildings. Some of the main highlights include the Church of San Niccolò of Bari, the Chiaramonte Castle, the Churches of Saint Agostino and Saint Francesco, the Malfitano Giacchetto Palace, the “Golden Gate” and the Church of Santa Caterina. Naro is fairly easy to reach and it is located about one hour and a half from Sigonella. Take A-19 (Catania Palermo) and exit Caltanissetta and then follow the signs to Canicatti and eventually follow directions towards Naro. For more information, call the Naro Tourist Office at 0922-953021.

ROME -- Oscar winner Russell Crowe will be a guest of honor at the 59th edition of the Taormina Film Festival, part of an openingnight extravaganza that will feature the Italian premiere of Zack Snyder's interpretation of the Superman franchise, Man of Steel. The June 15 screening of the $225 million blockbuster will be part of a wider European launch for the film, which will have gone into wide release in the U.S. and a handful of other territories only in the previous two days. The screening will take place in Taormina's signature Teatro Antico venue, a 2,400-year-old amphitheater that is transformed into a cinema each year for the festival . Snyder will join Crowe in Taormina, along with Henry Cavill, who plays Superman and Clark Kent in the film, Amy Adams, who plays Lois Lane, and Antje Traue, who plays the role of Faora, a villain. Crowe, who won an Oscar for his lead role in Gladiator in 2001, and has two other Oscar nominations to his credit, plays Jor-El, Superman's father. The role as part of a launching pad for summer blockbuster films is not a new one in Taormina, which has in recent years hosted major launches for Transformers, Kung Fu Panda 2, Toy Story 3 and Pixar's Brave. It was previously announced that actresses Meg Ryan and Renata Litvinova, of Russia, would attend the event, which concludes June 22. Taormina is under the artistic directorship of Mario Sesti, who took over the troubled festival amid budget issues a year ago. Tiziana Rocca, the festival's general manager, is back for a second year as well. Previous to the arrival of Sesti and Rocca, Taormina had been run by The Hollywood Reporter's chief European film critic, Deborah Young, for five years. As reported by a Taormina Filmfest press release and announced in Cannes, three big international stars like Meg Ryan, Amy Adams and Renata Livtinova were also announced as guests of the 59th Taormina FilmFest. Next to the Russian beauty, than overseas with one of the biggest stars of Hollywood cinema, Meg Ryan in Taormina that this year will be the protagonist of a Class Tao and receive the Taormina Arte Award. The Prince Albert II of Monaco the Special Prize "Taormina FilmFest Humanitarian Award" will be awarded in a special evening Sunday, June 16th , 2013, in the enchanting scenery of the Ancient Theatre. The prestigious award, which last year was awarded to Sean Penn and Father Rick Frechette for their commitment to the reconstruction of Haiti, was established to highlight the valuable work that associations, institutions, foundations and personality play to the aid of those who have suffered great hardships due to environmental disasters or due to the incorrect human behavior. Always attentive to the solidarity and charity events, Tiziana Rocca, General Manager of the Festival, during the last edition of the event, organized events during which they were collected funds for various associations active in the field of solidarity. Taormina Film Fest 2013 will mate with the International Festival of Pantalla Pinamar Argentina. Twinning provides that a year Argentine delegation will participate from 15th to 22nd June at the Taormina Festival next year instead of the agreement will see both the artistic directors to program a series of films of their own country, which will attend the festival twin. The union is supported in particular by the Italian community in Argentina, on 15th March was presented the award at the Taormina Film Fest to the President of 'National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts Argentina, Liliana Mazure. Tiziana Rocca and Mario Sesti in this regard said that "this initiative stems from a desire to learn more about the filmography from Argentina, which in recent seasons has been shown to experience a significant moment in the film by Juan Jose Campanella, Sebastian Borensztein, actor Richard Darin and the young actress Laura Citarella.

(CNN)- Italy is famed for fashion, food and, of course, history. In fact, Italy has the highest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites of any country in the world. As other social needs have taken priority in economically turbulent times, however, the country's budget for maintaining and restoring some of its greatest tourist attractions has been drastically reduced. While the Italian State Tourist Board said it couldn't supply statistics, as much as a third of culture budgets (€1.42 billion/$1.83 billion) have been cut over the past three years, according to a September 2012 report in The Daily Beast. Restoration of historic monuments has instead been left largely to the generosity of private donors.

Step forward Italian fashion industry. Over the past two years, several Italian fashion brands have pledged substantial amounts of money for the restoration of well known heritage sites. In 2011, luxury leather goods company Tod's pledged €25 million ($32 million) toward the restoration of the Colosseum. In May 2013, Diesel agreed to restore the Rialto Bridge in Venice to the tune of €5 million ($6.4 million). In Solomeo, Umbria, cashmere brand Brunello Cucinelli is helping to restore the town that it's based in, one building at a time. The Prada Foundation, the brand's charitable art branch, has helped restore the Venetian palazzo Ca' Corner Della Regina for use as an exhibition space. The latest to pledge funds is Fendi. The maker of high-end leather handbags has pledged €2.5 million ($3.2 million) for the restoration of Trevi Fountain, as well as Le Quattro Fontane, both in Rome. In addition to the PR value of maintaining a heritage site, some brands also gain substantial marketing advantages. During the restoration of Trevi fountain, Fendi will be allowed to display its logo at the site. A plaque dedicated to the brand will be displayed at the site for four years after completion of the restoration. Diesel is reportedly allowed to place advertising billboards over a part of the Rialto Bridge during that restoration. Advertisements on some of their most cherished monuments don't seem to bother locals. "If someone or a company is spending money to renovate a public building, which will be covered in scaffolding, green netting or white sheeting anyway, why shouldn't they be allowed to brand their contribution?" says Primo Franco of Nino Franco Winery, speaking about the Rialto Bridge renovations. "It is a temporary situation and renovation and restoration requires a huge amount of financing and shouldn't this investment be recognized? Funding large scale projects via the private sector is a way to protect the future of the cultural monuments in Italy." "We were delighted to learn of Diesel's generosity in contributing to the restoration of the Rialto Bridge," said Jane da Mosto, environmental scientist, activist and co-founder of weareherevenice, an organization that seeks to preserve Venice's unique heritage. "Each time I walk over it, I notice another facet of the incredible construction and it is an eternal reminder of the ingeniousness of Venetian architects and craftsmanship. It is also appropriate that the shop benefiting from a strategic position at the foot of the bridge is contributing to safeguarding the heritage of the city that brings it so many customers."

'Important target' reached in May, Turin giant says (ANSA) - New York - Fiat's retooled iconic 500 model has sold 100,000 units since it returned to the US market in 2011, the Turin-based carmaker said Monday. Fiat's May sales rose 1% annually to hit the "new and important target", said the Italian carmaker that controls Detroit's No. 3 Chrysler.

FLC Sigonella departments support USS Florida during visit to Augusta Bay

Don't miss the fun

ailors from NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) Sigonella provided high priority Casualty Repair (CASREP) parts for the USS Florida (SSGN 728) during a recent Brief Stop for Passenger (BSP) to NATO Pier, Augusta Bay, May 29. Logistics Specialist 1st Class (AW) Richard Fox, leading petty officer for the Logistics Support Center (LSC) division within NAVSUP FLC Sigonella, says it’s important for him and his Sailors to embark at Augusta Bay when fleet units come in for port visits because it’s the easiest way for the ships to take on provisions, mail and parts if needed. “When ships are transiting through the Med., to wherever it is that they’re going, they need to resupply,” Fox said. “Sigonella is the hub out here for providing materials to the fleet and without that support they won’t get their required items to conduct their operations. Our mission is to support the fleet units when called upon.” Logistics Specialist Seaman Kristan Marks, also from the LSC division, has made numerous trips to the NATO Pier, August Bay since arriving at NAVSUP FLC Sigonella two years ago. Marks say it’s always an experience when she travels to Augusta Bay for a replenishment evolution.

AUGUSTA BAY, Sicily (May 29, 2013) - Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Ronnie Davis throws a bag of supplies to crew members of the Ohio-class guided-missile submarine USS Florida (SSGN 728), gold crew, during a replenishment evolution in Augusta Bay, May 29. “I always love the trips to A-Bay [Augusta Bay],” she added. “Just knowing that we are able to assist other Sailors who are traveling around the Mediterranean makes my job a lot easier. We get to ride out on the water taxis and sometimes I feel like I’m actually headed underway and a part of the fleet side of the Navy. We are an extension of the Supply Department onboard those ships and submarines”. Logistics Specialist 2nd Class (SS) David Outlaw of Priority Material Office (PMO) Det Sigonella also enjoys the trips to Augusta Bay and thinks that providing CASREP parts to the Florida was an important part of NAVSUP FLC Sigonella’s mission to the fleet. “Our mission is to track all high priority material to the units deployed to the 6th Fleet area of operations,” Outlaw said. “I’m excited about today’s trip because it gives me an opportunity to interact with the fleet customer while delivering critical materials to support their day-to-day missions.” Homeported in Kings Bay, Ga., the Florida is currently deployed, conducting maritime operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility.

Outdoor Recreation is highlighting many different types of upcoming hiking trips on and around Mt. Etna. For more information call 624-4777 or 624-4396. (Photos courtesy of Emily Clutter)

MWR’s Outdoor Recreation has adrenalin-pumping trips designed especially for you Are you looking for the hidden treasures on this great island? There are many ways to see Sicily, but none better than with the specialized Outdoor Recreation weekly trips. With Morale, Welfare and Recreation’s Outdoor Recreation, you get the benefit of a small group experience along with an expert tour guide to enhance the trip. That helps when you’re hiking on an active volcano. The Lamponi Cave excursion gave Sigonellans another view of this great volcanic island. During a recent trip up Mount Etna, a group of seven were led by a local volcano expert over two different eruptions – the 1923 and the 2002 eruptions. While literally standing in history, the group was taught about the different types of volcanic rock and the geological features of the terrain and its plant life with the insight of a true nature lover.

As desolate and barren as the volcano itself seems, it has flashes of vegetation. The outer wall of a forest surprises hikers who venture to Etna North, and it provides some welcome shade after the long hike to get there. For the adventuresome hiker, there are several small respites throughout the forest, all suitable for an overnight stay and equipped with makeshift cots and fire pits. It’s also a perfect site to sit and have lunch, as picnic tables sit adjacent to the small cabins. Perhaps the highlight of the trip is venturing into the Lamponi Cave beneath the lava rock. Lava tubes have taken years to form and now welcome curious travelers who dare to descend the 20 or so feet to their depths. Outdoor Rec will provide head lamps for those on the trip. Coats are a must as the temperatures drop considerably in the lava tubes. The weather, in

general, can change drastically in a short amount of time on the volcano. The cool air of the Lamponi Cave is a needed resting spot before preparing for the five-kilometer hike back down to Rifugio Brunek, where Outdoor Rec picks up hikers for a return to base. We want to highlight how Outdoor Recreation trips can give you insight into the very nature of Sicily. The hiking skills and level of detailed volcanic information shared made each hiker a more informed participant who gained knowledge and skills for future adventures. Take time to join us and get the most out of your time on this great island! For more information on upcoming trips visit the ITT/ Outdoor Recreation office on NAS 1 or call 624-4777 or 624-4396.

SAWS member Paul Blanco pets Eddie during the SAWS monthly adopt-a-thon. SAWS holds the adopt-a-thons on the first Sunday of every month. According to their Facebook page, SAWS is a non-profit organization that relies on the dedicated, goodhearted volunteers of Sigonella, Italy and the surrounding areas to find loving homes for the animals of Sigonella. (Photo courtesy of Chelsea Humphrey)

by Chelsea Humphrey SAWS President Got Milk? Sigonella Animal Welfare Society (SAWS) hosted their monthly adopt-a-thon on June 2, in front of the Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella Commissary on NAS I. SAWS holds their adopt-athons on the first Sunday of every month except for holiday weekends. SAWS made this month’s adopta-thon an Oreo theme and offered homemade Oreo truffles, Oreo Rice Krispy treats, dirt cake, white chocolate coated Oreos and fried Oreos on site for donations raising funds to help pay for medical treatments for the animals in the SAWS program. Sticking with the Oreo theme, a young pup from a litter on NAS II made an appearance looking for a home along with a second pup from

a different litter on NAS II. One was named Oreo, for his undeniable sweetness and black and white fur, while the other was named Milky, for his milky white fur. In addition, this was the first time that Lucky was present at the adopt-a-thon. Lucky is a three month old puppy that was hit by a car in front of Marinai in October of 2012. SAWS volunteers had picked him up at 3 o’clock in the morning to rush him to the emergency vet clinic in Catania. After several surgeries and five pins, veterinarians were able to save his leg. He had to stay in the clinic for over a month and the months that followed he battled mange and infections. He is finally healthy

enough to join SAWS for adopt-athons. He was joined by Eddie who was found malnourished on NAS II and his back end completely paralyzed. Veterinarians were never able to find the cause of it but after proper diet and love and care he has made a full recovery and is ready to find a permanent home. As a result of this month’s adopta-thon, Simba and Diesel are going on a trial run. Both adoptions look promising. In addition, a kitten found around the NAS I barracks also went home with a family. To find out more about the dogs posted up for adoption or more about SAWS, please send an email to sawsanimals@hotmail.com or like them on Facebook at www. facebook.com/Sigonella.Animals
