NASA CONVENTION TROPHY 2012

UNDERSTANDING: This year the NASA team has pledged to showcase a meaningful NASA with a difference rather than a Jamboree. Therefore, we have envisaged a trophy which would make the convention a fun learning experience. Students often graduate with inadequate information with regard to the materials that are available in the market today. Understanding of the materials and technology right at the academic stage is very essential for the budding architects. The building material industries today end up sponsoring events and meets wherein a large amount goes into miscellaneous expenditures. Sponsors for the NASA convention put up stalls where students end up collecting information brochures which are never referred to again. Hence, there is no value addition. Our prime aim here is to ‘BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN THE BUDDING ARCHITECTS AND THE BUILDING MATERIALS’. It is the close synergy between experimental and theoretical activities which would ensure that the student gains a thorough understanding of the fundamental mechanisms that operate at micro and macro level across a wide-range of materials. This integrated approach would provide presentations reinforced by the extensive studies, micrographs and illustrations that show how the microstructure of a material controls its mechanical behaviour, thereby filling the huge void targeting a whole mass of 4000 budding and practicing architects, all in ONE GO!

NASA CONVENTION TROPHY 2012Material Considerations in Architecture: An inextricable link has existed historically between a building’s characteristics form, appearance, function and the characteristics of the diverse materials that were available and suitable for construction. As exemplified by historical building traditions in stone and wood, early architects sought to understand intuitively the intrinsic physical behaviour of commonly available materials to exploit their properties in designing and constructing buildings. Conversely, later innovations in the type and availability of materials strongly impacted the development of new architectural forms as architects began to respond to changing societal demands and new building functions emerged. Selection of materials for use in architecture is always based on various criteria. Performance and Cost have obvious role in this selection, but final selections are often done based on appearance, beauty and aesthetic, ease of construction with regard to human resource skills, and availability of material. Architects often think about materials as a part of the composition of design through which materials can be selected and accepted as level of structure or combination and visual. It is such an atmosphere and environment which calls for the significance of a ‘thorough’ understanding of the building materials.

APPROACH: This competition would test the ability of each group of students to video document one building material industry within their region from the point of view of a complete understanding of the material as a tool, the process, its application and the possible limits that the product could be elevated to using Imagination.

NASA CONVENTION TROPHY 2012 Some broad indicators of building industry are as under: - The manufacture of ply woods - Laminates (Formica or sun mica etc.) - Asbestos sheets - Basic fastening systems like the range of nails, screws, nuts and bolts - Rolled mild steel reinforcement bars and tor steel - Aluminium extrusions or fabrications - Fibreglass and its products - Building tools as in Hilti guns or Black and Decker series of hand tools and their application - Various types of welding and their limitations/applications. In case of duplication, it would be taken care of by the council and the moderator to guide the participants to go ahead with a specified technology pertaining to the very building material that they chose .Nevertheless, based upon the participants interest we can also allow duplication if required. For instance, say, the plywood industry is well established in central Maharashtra as well as in Kerala. In such a case, students are free to choose the technology which they wish to document. Thus, it is only after the specific technology is identified, that the group would approach the material manufacturer for permission and involvement in the process. A formal letter of request to the manufacturer would be given by the NASA office together with a recommendation from a senior professional who would further endorse this request
