Located steps away from Vanderbilt University, the Kimpton Aertson design took inspiration from the school’s namesake, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and his Netherlandish kinsman Jan Aertson of Bilt. In the lobby, wooden sculptural wall hangings by Jong-Rye Cha and Ara Peterson evoke wave-like movement through undulating patterns establishing a connection with Commodore Vanderbilt. Entering the lobby it is immediately apparent that art is part of the hotel’s design concept. An inlaid wooden compass rose created by Patrick Hayes of Nashville’s 1767 sets the contemporary tone of the hotel with its locally salvaged materials and polished detailing. A curated selection of artworks by local and international artists fills the walls of all public spaces, including hallways, the hotel’s famed restaurant L.A. Jackson, and the private guest rooms.
