CHOREOGRAPHER’S NOTE “Two centuries separate us from the time Mozart wrote his Sechs Deutche Tänze. A historical period shaped considerably by wars, revolutions and all sorts of social upheavals. With this in mind, I found it impossible to simply create different dance numbers reflecting merely the humor and musical brilliance of the composer. Instead, I have set six seemingly non-sensical acts, which obviously ignore their surroundings. They are dwarfed in face of the ever present troubled world, which most of us, for some unspecified reason, carry in our souls. Although the entertaining quality of Mozart’s Sechs Deutche Tänze enjoys great general popularity, it shouldn’t only be regarded as a burlesqué. Its humor ought to serve as a vehicle to point towards our relative values. Mozart’s ability to react upon difficult circumstances with a self-preserving outburst of nonsensical poetry is well known. A fragment of a letter to his cousin is the finest example of this.” – Jiří Kylián Fragments of a letter which Mozart wrote on November 13, 1777 (he was 21 at the time) to das Bäsle, pet name for his cousin Maria Anna Thekla, presumably Mozart’s first love. [W. Hildesheimer, Mozart, Frankfurt/Main (Suhrkamp) 1977].
Ma très chère Nièce! Cousine! fille! Mère, Sœur, et Epouse! Potz Himmel! Croatians, demons, witches, hags and cross batteries! Potz Element! Air, earth, fire, and water! Europe, Asia, Africa and America! Jesuits, Augustines, Benedictines, Capucins, Minorites, Franciscans, Dominicans, Carthusians and Knights of the Cross! Privateers, canons regular and irregular, sluggards, rascals, scoundrels, imps and villains all! Donkeys, buffaloes, oxen, fools, blockheads, numskulls and foxes! What means this? Four soldiers and three shoulder-belts! Such a thick packet and no portrait! I was so anxious about it—indeed, I felt sure of getting it, having yourself written long ago to say that I should have it soon, very soon.

MODERN MASTERS ARTISTS JIŘÍ KYLIÁN, Choreographer, Sechs Tänze (Six Dances) Choreographer Jiří Kylián is best known for his work with Nederlands Dans Theatre (NDT) in The Hague. As the company’s artistic director, he steered NDT’s course for 20 years, creating over 50 works for the company. He also structured the organization uniquely into three tiers as NDT I: the world-famous Dutch ballet company; NDT II: a company dedicated to experimental dance performed by 17- through 22-year-olds; and NDT III: a vehicle for projects involving dancers over age 40. Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, Mr. Kylián started training at age 9 at the ballet school of the Prague National Theatre. From 1962 until 1967, he studied at the Prague Conservatory. Then he attended the Royal Ballet School in London. John Cranko, a well-known choreographer of the time and director of the Stuttgart Ballet, invited him to join the company as a dancer. Mr. Kylián left the Stuttgart Ballet in 1975, to work exclusively for NDT. International recognition followed in 1978, when his Sinfonietta debuted at the renowned Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, North Carolina. That same year, NDT named him as artistic director. More than 40 different companies around the world have staged Mr. Kylián’s works. During the 1980s, his style shifted towards abstraction. Fluent sculpture of movement is his over-riding trademark. In 1999, Mr. Kylián stepped down as NDT’s artistic director, but remained choreographer-in-residence. Among his awards, he received the Decoration of the Royal Dutch Order of Oranje Nassau from Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands in 1995. He also won the Edinburgh Festival Critics Award in 1997 for his work Tears of Laughter (1996) and in the same year was given an honorary doctorate from The Juilliard School. CHRISTOPHER WHEELDON, O.B.E., Choreographer, Ghosts Mr. Wheeldon trained at The Royal Ballet School and joined The Royal Ballet in 1991. In 1993, he joined New York City Ballet and was promoted to Soloist in 1998. He was named NYCB’s first Resident Choreographer in July 2001. Since then, Mr. Wheeldon has created and staged productions for many of the world’s major ballet companies. In 2007, Mr. Wheeldon founded Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company and was appointed an Associate Artist for Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London. Mr. Wheeldon now serves as Artistic Associate of The Royal Ballet. As Artistic Associate, Mr. Wheeldon created many works, including the full-length Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Winter’s Tale, both of which were co-productions with The National Ballet of Canada. For the Metropolitan Opera, he choreographed Dance of the Hours for Ponchielli’s La Gioconda (2006) and Richard Eyre’s production of Carmen (2012) as well as ballet sequences for the feature film Center Stage (2000) and Sweet Smell of Success on Broadway (2002). Mr. Wheeldon created a special excerpt for the Closing Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics. In April 2016, he was the Artistic Director for the Fashion Forward exhibition in Paris at La Musee Arts et Decoratif. In 2014, Mr. Wheeldon directed and choreographed the musical version of An American in Paris, which had productions in Paris, on Broadway and in London. 2016 was The Joffrey Ballet’s world premiere of The Nutcracker reimagined by Mr. Wheeldon, and he directed and choreographed the gala presentation of Lerner & Loewe’s Brigadoon starring Kelli O’Hara and Patrick Wilson at New York City Center in 2017. Among Mr. Wheeldon’s awards are a Tony Award for Best Choreography for An American in Paris, an Outer Critics Award for Best Choreography and Direction for An American in Paris, the Martin E. Segal Award from Lincoln Center, the American Choreography Award, the Dance Magazine Award, multiple London Critics’ Circle Awards and the Leonard Massine Prize for new choreography. Mr. Wheeldon’s productions of Cinderella and The Winter’s Tale won the Benois de la Danse, and he is an Olivier Award winner for his ballets Aeternum for The Royal Ballet and Polyphonia for Morphoses. In 2016, Mr. Wheeldon was named an O.B.E. and was made an Honorary Fellow of American Academy of Arts and Sciences. C.F. KIP WINGER, Composer, Ghosts While C.F. Kip Winger has arrived at the highest level of achievement possible for an orchestral composer of ballet music, his professional journey has been utterly unpredictable and remarkable for its diverse musical path. Early in Mr. Winger’s career, he toured as a bass player with rock legend Alice Cooper, moving on to perform and record with Alan Parsons (as the lead singer for Alan Parsons’ Live Project), Roger Daltry and Bob Dylan. In 2012, London’s Classic Rock Magazine called Kip Winger “one of the most gifted composers and arrangers in the rock genre.” After establishing his hugely successful, eponymous band—which sold millions of albums and charted six top-40 radio singles—Mr. Winger turned his attention back to his first loves: classical concert music and dance. He studied composition with Richard Danielpour, Michael Kurek and Richard Hermann. Since then, his works have been commissioned and performed by the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, the Sun River Music Festival in Oregon, the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra in Greece. Teacher Michael Kurek has publicly praised Mr. Winger for “his great ear and innate musical sensitivity…beautifully crafted phrases and nuance.” Mr. Winger’s score for the ballet Ghosts, written for string orchestra, piano and harp, is one of the most celebrated contemporary ballet scores in performance today. Championed by the world-renowned and Tony-award-winning choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, Ghosts was part of the San Francisco Ballet’s repertoire from 2010 to 2014, with performances at Manhattan’s Lincoln Center, London’s Sadler’s Wells and the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. In 2010, Ghosts was nominated for the Isadora Duncan Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music/Sound/Text. Mr. Winger’s tenth studio album, Better Days Coming, was released in 2014 and entered at #85 on the Billboard Rock chart. In 2016, Mr. Winger recorded Winger: Conversations with Nijinsky with the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra. The album included music from his most recent 2016 Grammy-nominated symphonic work Conversations with Nijinsky along with Ghosts; the album debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Traditional Classical Chart. Tamara Nijinsky said at the opening performance of Conversations, “Kip Winger has captured my father’s heart and soul…and reminds us of my father’s genius with his own work.” GEORGE BALANCHINE, Choreographer, Western Symphony Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, George Balanchine studied ballet and music in Russia before making his way to America. He gained notoriety as a young choreographer and co-founded the American Ballet. Mr. Balanchine was the co-founder, artistic director and chief choreographer of the New York City Ballet. In addition to ballet, George Balanchine choreographed Hollywood movies and Broadway musicals. He is known for his connection to Igor Stravinsky; Mr. Balanchine created many ballets to his work, some in collaboration with the composer. He made more than 465 works, which have been performed by nearly every ballet company in the world. Mr. Balanchine created plotless ballets, where the dancing upstaged glitz and storytelling. His work never featured a star, as he believed the performance should outshine the individual. He is credited with developing the neo-classical style distinct to the 20th century. Mr. Balanchine served as the artistic director of the New York City Ballet until his death, on April 30, 1983, in New York City.
NASHVILLE BALLET LEADERSHIP & STAFF PAUL VASTERLING, Artistic Director & CEO Paul Vasterling’s artistic career begin at age 10 when he started studying piano, then expanded at age 16 when he started dancing. From this start, Mr. Vasterling landed at Nashville Ballet where he became a company dancer, teacher, ballet master and choreographer. He stepped into the role of Artistic Director of Nashville Ballet in 1998, and was promoted to CEO for the ballet in the spring of 2010, at the board’s request. His choreography maneuvers between classical full-length story ballets, contemporary one-acts set to the music of local artists and everywhere in between. He has a particular penchant for collaborating with nationally and internally renowned composers, songwriters and institutions such as Nashville’s own Bluebird Cafe, Ben Folds, Matthew Perryman Jones, Fisk Jubilee Singers and others. His artistry as a storyteller has led him to create pieces such as Dracula, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Peter Pan and Layla and the Majnun. Beyond his own choreography, Mr. Vasterling has expanded the company’s repertoire to include works by Salvatore Aiello, George Balanchine, James Canfield, Lew Christensen, Twyla Tharp and Jirí Kylián, among many others. In addition, he has edited and updated classic productions of Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. In 2004, Mr. Vasterling received a Fulbright Scholarship that enabled him to work with three different companies in Argentina, paving the way for Nashville Ballet’s tour there a year later. His ballets have also been performed internationally in Asia as well as across the U.S. to great acclaim, including a debut appearance on stage at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. in April 2017. Most recently, Mr. Vasterling was selected as one of the Fellows in residence for the 2017-18 academic year at The Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University, the first international institute devoted to the creation and academic study of ballet. Under his leadership as CEO, the company’s operating budget has doubled and Nashville Ballet became the first local performing arts organization to purchase its own building. He oversaw a capital campaign to raise $5.8 million to renovate and reopen as The Martin Center for Nashville Ballet in 2015. He has transformed a troupe of 12 professional dancers into a company of 25, and his commitment to developing the dancers of tomorrow inspired him to establish a second preprofessional company of over 20 dancers. Mr. Vasterling has shaped Nashville Ballet into a company high on artistry and dramatic power as well as commanding technical ability and virtuosity.
