She Found Herself Inside the Ring As we sit in a boxing gym perched on the side of the ring, we dive deep into Cristee Forkins' incredible journey, unfolding against the backdrop of Music City Boxing. Her story is not just about boxing; it's about transformation, passion, and pursuing a dream that has taken her from a skeptic to a dedicated athlete.

Cristee reflects on her early perceptions of boxing, remembering the uncertainty she felt when she first stepped into Pepper Boxing with a ClassPass — two years at that gym, then the unexpected closure due to the pandemic. But the universe had a plan – Stevie, a former trainer at Pepper Boxing and now owner of Music City Boxing, approached her, igniting the spark for a new beginning as a competitive athlete.

By Terry Barga

Moving from local bouts to national tournaments, Cristee narrates her journey across cities, a testament to her dedication. The conversation turns personal as she opens up about the profound impact boxing has had on her self-confidence and composure. In the face of losses, she emphasizes the role of a supportive community in pulling her back from the edge.

With an impressive record of 19 and six, including a dozen fights this year, Cristee shares the intense emotions of that first hit in the ring. The sting of reality, the awareness that this is more than just a sport – it's a raw and awakening experience.

Photos by: USA Boxing

What began as a quest for fitness evolved into a burning passion, gradually overshadowing her role as a chemical engineer in the tobacco industry. Music City Boxing became more than a place to blow off steam; it became the canvas on which Cristee painted her dreams of a full-time boxing career.

NASHVILLE FIT MAGAZINE

As Cristee gears up for the Olympic trials next month, her eyes sparkle with dreams of a full-time boxing career, sponsorship, and the pinnacle – Olympic success. Her journey, marked by physical and mental challenges, is an unwavering pursuit of a goal: the Olympics and, beyond that, professional world championships.

Page 13

Cristee extends a heartfelt invitation to those contemplating boxing, stressing the importance of building connections and supporting fellow athletes. As the interview wraps, the focus shifts to the upcoming trials in Lafayette, Louisiana – a poignant chapter in Cristee's story as she inches closer to the dream she holds dear. A Goal-Getter's Guide

6 Tips to Unleashing Your Full Potential in 2024

By: Gerell Webb Setting goals is a powerful way to turn aspirations into achievements, but it requires more than wishful thinking. What do you want? What do you want, not just what you think is possible? Say it out loud. Could you write it down right now? Dreams are just dreams until you write them down, which becomes a goal. The new year is the perfect time to reset. Take a step back and review what we accomplished over the last 365 days. Some things we achieved, and some areas we may have fallen short. Remember that a loss is not a failure if you learned a lesson. So, what should you do differently this year to ensure you achieve all of your goals? I'm happy that you asked. Here are my six tips to set goals and achieve them. 1. SMART Goals: Get Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound The acronym SMART has been a cornerstone in goal-setting methodologies because it works. When setting goals, ensure they are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. Instead of a vague resolution like "exercise more," opt for a SMART goal such as" Exercise 3x per week for 30 minutes" or "Lose 10 pounds by March 1st." Yeah, put a date on your goals. This provides clarity and allows you to track your progress and celebrate milestones along the way.

2. Break It Down: Small Steps Lead to Big Wins How do you eat an Elephant? One bite at a time. You should not be eating elephants, although I'm sure they are pretty high in protein. Large, intimidating goals can be overwhelming.

NASHVILLE FIT MAGAZINE

Break them down into smaller, more manageable tasks. For example, if you want to write a book, start by setting a daily word count or dedicating specific time slots for writing. Achieving these mini-goals will motivate you and create a sense of accomplishment, propelling you toward the larger objective. 3. Prioritize and Focus: Less is More While listing numerous goals for the new year is tempting, spreading yourself too thin can lead to burnout and decreased chances of success. Prioritize your goals and focus on a few key objectives. This allows you to direct your energy and resources more effectively, increasing the likelihood of achieving significant progress in each area. Again, what do you want? 4. Visualize Success: Create a Vision Board Visualization is a powerful tool in goal setting. Create a vision board representing your goals and the life you want to lead. Include images, quotes, and symbols that inspire and motivate you. Placing this board in a visible location reminds you daily of your aspirations, reinforcing your commitment and fueling your determination. As my college Coach used to say, "See yourself making the play before you make it." 5. Accountability Partners: Share Your Goals Sharing your goals with a trusted friend, family member, or mentor can provide a support system that holds you accountable. When others know your goals and intentions, it creates a sense of responsibility to follow through. Regular checkins with your accountability partner can offer encouragement, feedback, and a boost of motivation during challenging times. "Say what you want to see until you see what you said." 6. Embrace Flexibility and Learn from Setbacks: Life is unpredictable, and setbacks are inevitable. Rather than viewing obstacles as insurmountable, see them as opportunities for growth. Embrace flexibility in your goals and be open to adjusting your approach when needed. The goal is the goal. Change your approach, not the goal. Reflect on setbacks, learn from them, and use the experience to refine your approach moving forward. Resilience is a critical trait in achieving longterm success. Setbacks are just a setup for a comeback.

Visualize Success! Page 25

Here is what I hope you take away from this article. You have everything that it takes to achieve your goals. You must believe it and refuse to give up when it gets complicated. It's not about what you're capable of but what you are willing to do. Life has a funny way of testing you to see if you want what you said you wanted. That's what those obstacles are. It's just a chance to prove that you want it. So, how bad do you like it? Shhh, don't tell me. Show me! Happy New Year, fit fam. Let's go to work. DAY BY DAY, REP BY REP — YOU EARN EVERY WIN. AND WE’RE HERE TO FUEL YOU TO EARN EVEN MORE.

Finding Ways To Thrive This Winter By Adrienne Neale, Holistic Made Easy

For many people, January is a time of excitement for starting a new year, of hitting “reset” and getting to work toward new goals. For others, let’s be honest, the New Year and winter months can really be a struggle. Colder temps and less sunshine can really take their toll, not to mention our non-stop, always-connected way of life leaves little margin for truly resting during the holidays. So many people start their New Year with an empty cup and just try to keep pushing through. What if I told you there was a better way? Let me tell you a secret: you're in control of your time and how it's used! It's true! Yes, you need to make a living, and you may have people in your life who depend on you. Even with life’s demands, you can still choose how to spend bits of your time to make changes that add up to your healthier well-being, and I have some tips on how to do just that. As we start 2024, I challenge you to pick one of these areas to focus on so you can THRIVE and not just SURVIVE this winter: 1- Prioritize sleep. Put your phone down 30-60 minutes earlier each night and get to sleep. Those reels can wait. So can those emails. Get some rest! 2- Soak up the rays + go barefoot when possible. Vitamin D boosts mood and the immune system -even in winter months- so take advantage of sunshine when you can! Same with barefoot grounding in the grass, even if it's cold. Just a few minutes of these habits goes a long way. The benefits are amazing and can leave you feeling more balanced and energized. 3- If you set new goals, make sure they're SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timed. And make sure they're YOUR goals for yourself, not what someone else wants for you. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail, so create and work the plan so you can achieve our goals! 4- Eat better. If it comes in a box, bag or wrapper, eat less of it. Opt for real foods like grass-fed meats, wild-caught fish, pastured eggs, actual fruits + vegetables (organic if possible!). Our bodies need good fuel to feel their best. If you're living on chips, candy bars and energy drinks, it's time to show your body some love by feeding it what it truly needs. 5- Make meaningful connections. I'm not talking about boosting your Instagram following. Make a phone call or schedule time to meet up for coffee or tea with someone who fills you up and doesn't drain you, even if it’s for 30 minutes. We were created for meaningful relationships and we weren’t meant to do life alone - and now, more than ever, our culture is one of LONELINESS as we've replaced true connection with connectivity.

Best Podcast - You Need Therapy &

Best Mental Health Professional @youneedtherapypodcast & @kat.defatta I started this podcast hoping that a few people might change how they think about therapy and see that the mental health journey can be as fun as it is hard and scary. The way this community of listeners has grown to embrace the podcast is a testament to every listener’s courageous choice to learn, self-reflect, and engage in dialogue around mental health that can sometimes be sticky and uncomfortable. I’m so grateful to each of you who have embraced the invitation to become more curious and less judgmental. You made this possible!

Best Physical TherapistDr. Killian Carlton, PT @killiancarltondpt www.bodyinmotionptp.com

I’m extremely grateful to all who voted for me as Nashville’s best physical therapist! I can’t imagine a better compliment than many of you trusting me with your care. Serving the Nashville running community brings me so much joy, and I can’t wait to continue helping runners overcome injuries and chase PRs for many years to come.

Best Yoga Instructor - Naima Adedapo @MyNaima Words can’t truly express how grateful I am to receive the Nashville Fit Magazine title “Best Yoga Instructor” for 2023. I wouldn’t be receiving this without the excellent training I received at Core Power, the support and love of my family, friends, clients, colleagues, and community, mainly my fiancé Chris Oliveros, who has been a rock for me and the two women, Nora and Dina Shabayek, who have believed in me like no one else, that cultivated my favorite place to hold space for people…Fahrenheit. I only hope to continue to bring healing, self-awareness, support, love, and the phenomenal practice of yoga to this Nashville Community, which I love so much. The teacher, the student, the love and divine light in me, sees honors, acknowledges, and respects the same teacher, student, love, and divine light in you. Namaste

Best Local Non-Profit - Thistle Farms @thistlefarms We’re incredibly grateful for the support of Nashville Fit Magazine and its readers for voting us as the Best Nonprofit! We could not do this work to help our women reclaim and transform their lives without the support of our community. For 25 years, Thistle Farms has lit a pathway for women survivors to overcome and heal from systems of prostitution and exploitation. Most of the women we serve first experienced sexual abuse between ages 7-11, began using alcohol or drugs by age 13, and first hit the streets between the ages of 14 and 16. Traumatic childhood experiences give way to homelessness, addiction, further abuse, and incarceration, often compounded by poverty.

Your palms should be facing down (pronated grip), slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Execution: Engage your core muscles to stabilize your spine. Keep your back straight throughout the movement. With a slight bend in your knees, hinge at your hips, and slowly lower the dumbbells towards the floor. Keep the dumbbells close to your body as you lower it. Focus on pushing your hips back while maintaining a straight spine. Key Points to Remember: Focus on the hip hinge movement rather than bending at the waist. Keep the dumbbells close to your legs throughout the exercise.
