Welcome

For the Bakers in Brentwood, a total gutting was required to get the new home of their dreams when their family of five began busting out of a charming rancher in Green Hills. With plenty of space to spare, their Brentwood home features places that make sense for the family — a large swimming pool, a cozy kitchen banquette, an expansive island and tons of art and patterns that make the home feel special.

For Franklin’s Quillmans, the house they already had was the joy. With their children grown, they entertained the thought of selling and downsizing. But they took the time to reflect with designer Kimberly Kelly of K7 Interiors about whether renovation was a better option. They decided their memories were too sweet to leave behind, so a first-floor renovation opened things up, let in more light and modernized their home in a way that will usher them through this phase of life.

T

he more people let me into their homes for this magazine, the more I am blown away by all the ways people show off their personality — adjusting their homes to work best for them, without too much regard for what other people think. They love where they live because they make it a home.

Middle Tennesseans’ goal is curating their best life — and that can mean whatever they want it to mean. In this issue, we have found one thing that all of these homeowners embraced, and that is livable luxury. They have made spaces for their family, for their friends and for reflection; the spaces are comfortable and beautiful and filled with things that, to quote Marie Kondo, spark joy.

And for the couples moving into Gallatin’s Revery Point, it is all about enjoying that sweet spot after kids when luxurious finishes are a no-brainer and life is better lived on the lake, playing golf, hiking the greenway or simply turning the key and heading out of town without a second thought. The common thread connecting all of these people is that there is no place they’d rather be than home.

O’MORE GRADS OPEN MODERN REMAINS DESIGN STUDIO IN THE NATIONS STORY BY HOLLIE DEESE PHOTOGRAPHY BY QUINN BALLARD AND ALLISON ELEFANTE

Evan Millard, Lauren Moore and Betsy Tribeau met at O’More and recently opened a showroom, Modern Remains, in The Nations.

MODERN REMAINS 1410 51st Ave. N. Suite 106 Nashville, TN 37209 615.730.9068

hen Evan Millard, Lauren Moore and Betsy Tribeau met in their Intro to Interior Design class at O’More, the three bonded during late nights in the studio working on class projects, like reconfiguring Dave’s Barber Shop at the Factory in Franklin into an apartment space for their Basic Drafting class. “Having classes that small really fostered a great atmosphere where everybody just collaborated and worked together, asked for opinions and design help,” Millard says of their experience at O’More, which was sold to Belmont in 2018. “We could bounce ideas off of each other, and with a wide range of students from just graduating high school all the way to being in their 40s and 50s, there was some really great knowledge.” After they graduated in 2013, Tribeau began working at Alcott Interiors; Moore soon joined her. Millard was hired at Roger Higgins on Blair Boulevard — right across the street. They never really got to all work together too much, but over time they could really see what each of their strong suits was. “I think we all have really different strengths,” Millard says. “Betsy is very analytical, and she’s a really deep thinker, and she thinks about pushing the boundaries and what can be next. Lauren and I are a little more similar. We love palettes and textures and day-to-day communication with clients.” But they couldn’t shake an idea they had tossed around in design school — all of them working together. Eventually they made the leap and launched their own full-service interior design studio, Modern Remains.

24 | NASHVILLEINTERIORS.COM

“Having an idea and then having it come to life, it really is a dream come true,” Moore says. Collectively they’ve worked on a gamut of homes — a residence for an NFL player, a boutique aesthetician clinic, multi-million-dollar residences in Belle Meade, a 16-million-dollar penthouse on top of the Biltmore Palm Beach and even a yacht on Lake Geneva. “One of the things that I love about interior design is that each project has its own set of parameters, but also challenges, in what the client is wanting to achieve,” Moore says. Their Modern Remains showroom in Stocking 51, the 1925-era Belle Meade Hosiery building in The Nations, opened Nov. 16, 2018. They have a space with size, sun and on-site parking! Inside, it’s filled with work from a variety of artists — painted hides, woven leather rugs and, of course, textiles, fabrics and patterns. “When we first began talking about Modern Remains and what our aesthetic would be as a design studio, and then as a showroom, we settled upon architectural, with contrasting tones and textures,” Millard says. “We are three very different individuals, coming from three very different backgrounds, with design being the key component that ties us all together. And I think that’s what makes us different.” Plus, they all really love seeing each other every day. “I walk in every day, and I’m happy to see Betsy and Lauren. And even if the days are challenging, I get to go home fulfilled, knowing I do what I love, where I love, with people I love.” NI

UNCOMMON BEAUTY LIBERTY COMMON IS THE LATEST ENTRY ON NASHVILLE’S DESIGN-FORWARD DINING SCENE

T

erry Raley knows his way around designing a restaurant or two — not by trade, but by practice. His latest offering, Liberty Common from his Amaranth Hospitality Group, is an effortlessly stylish, modern Southern brasserie that honors Old World café tradition. “We really wanted to capture what I feel like a brasserie is, with coarser marble, copper elements, opal glass sconces,” Raley says. “We wanted to do booths that were channel backs. I didn’t want to do a carbon copy of a typical steakhouse brasserie, a New York City hybrid. I wanted it to feel like something that was uniquely Southern.”

In designing the 6,100-square-foot space of Liberty Common, Raley sought to borrow the essential elements of a traditional brasserie, such as a brass back bar system and marble architectural features, while avoiding a full-scale reproduction of French-American hybrid bistros. The result is a Southern brasserie with bright blue booths and tile but without the reproduction of French architectural elements typical of brasseries in other cities. “I feel like we took the best of what those places have to offer, and we just kind of modernized it a little bit,” he says. “I think it works.” Liberty Common is the fourth restaurant from Raley,

Terry Raley made all the final design decisions for Liberty Common, a Southern-style brasserie directly across from Ascend Amphitheatre.

Some of the design for Liberty Common came right from Raley’s dreams. Others, like the copper pendant lights, came from overseas, requiring Raley to get an importer’s license and a conversion to US use by Southern Lights Electric.

who developed the aesthetics and concepts for East Nashville’s Holland House, The Pharmacy, and most recently, Butchertown Hall. Raley is known for his ability to imagine extraordinary design and to source and commission custom furniture, fixtures and architectural elements that bring his spaces to life. Even if he has to get an importer’s license to do so — like he did for the copper pendants he brought from overseas before he even had the restaurant. “They were the benchmark of what I wanted the place to be,” he says. “I felt like if I had those, everything else would be designed around them.” The pendants sat in his attic for about a year and a half until Southern Lights Electic helped get them UL listed and wired for American standards. Then he worked with Elemental Arthouse to design the bar and shelving, the scalloped wall in the private dining area

32 | NASHVILLEINTERIORS.COM

and the railings behind the banquettes. “The first thing that I always tend to think about, and that’s with basically any restaurant that I’ve done, is lighting. I always consider that first, how the restaurant is going to make you feel,” he says. The restaurant’s menus were developed by partner and Executive Chef Jeffrey Rhodes. A Nashville native, Rhodes graduated from Le Cordon Bleu and spent many years working in Michelin-starred restaurants across the West Coast. His menus are complimented by fresh biscuits, pastries and desserts made in-house by Pastry Chef Jessica Collins. “We’re in the hospitality business, we’re not in the restaurant business,” he says. “I really appreciate going to restaurants where, even if the service isn’t 100 percent perfect, there’s this effort, there’s attention being paid to every guest.” NI

Color is subtle but impactful, as is the use of wallpaper that adds some serious depth to the smaller spaces in the restaurant, like the front entryway and bathroom halls.

Making Space

BAKER FAMILY FINDS ITS PLACE IN A BRENTWOOD RENOVATION

NASHVILLEINTERIORS.COM | 39

STORY BY HOLLIE DEESE PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANTHONY MASTERSON PHOTOGRAPHY

R

ob Baker was born and raised in Nashville. His wife, Jenny, was born in Chattanooga but moved here young enough for them to attend high school together. After they got married they moved into a little ranch house in Green Hills, and over the next 17 years they had three daughters and built a life. Eventually, a larger, more livable space outside the city seemed like it would be more in tune with the life they were living. During their search they looked at a Brentwood home on Shadow Ridge that needed a lot of work, and they knew the moment they walked in they could make it the home they needed. “I felt like it had good bones,” Jenny says. They made an offer, it was accepted, and the family moved in — living in the space for a full year before starting renovations so they knew exactly how they needed the space to work for them. Then they moved out for a year and a half and overhauled the place.

Above, there are lots of little nooks and spaces for the Baker children to find to be alone, craft, read or do homework.

“We knew we were going to gut the kitchen and master bath because they just weren’t functional for us. There were some odd turns and corners and bay windows that made the kitchen, which was a good size, less functional,” Rob says.

Below, the solid front door was removed during the renovation to make way for one that let the light in.

The back deck was a bit dilapidated, too, and there was a big retaining wall about eight feet from the house, so the yard fell off the side of a hill without anywhere really for the kids and dog to play.

Across, a piano awaits practice time.

“We just considered where we spend the most time and where we wanted to spend the most time, and it was the kitchen and the view and sitting on a porch and having a porch swing.” They were able to move back in October 2017 after Montgomery Classic finished the renovation, and the pool and outdoor living space from Langley and Taylor Pool was completed October 2018. Now there is plenty of room outside, with a covered porch across the front of the house, with the solid slab front door traded out for one in glass and iron. Inside there is more than 7,000 square feet of living space. They even joke that their Green Hills ranch could fit in

40 | NASHVILLEINTERIORS.COM

42 | NASHVILLEINTERIORS.COM

the bottom basement of this home — but with 14-yearold twins and a 10-year-old, all the space gets used. “I think we’ve made it pretty cozy and livable,” Jenny says. “Rob was dying for a porch with a wood-burning fireplace, and so we so sit out there and imagine we’re at a cabin, like we’re in the mountains. I mean, we built what we enjoy.” There are a lot of little nooks around the house where the girls can hang out with friends or be by themselves and craft. And the pool is perfect for entertaining or hanging out as a family. “We wanted somewhere where they would want to be instead of anywhere else,” Jenny says of their kids. The couple worked with designer Anna Forkum. They say she gave them the space to make their own decisions, but she also was creative and eclectic enough to offer options they might not have thought of. Though none of them was afraid to mix patterns, colors and textures. “We think that we’re minimal, but we’re not,” Jenny jokes. “Jenny likes a little bit of pattern,” Forkum says. “She likes textures. She likes whimsy, but she has a strong sense of certain colors that she likes — and she used those throughout the house. And then Rob likes things bold and more graphic. For example, the bathroom was black and gray and white. But then, she was scared it was getting too masculine, so we decided on wallpaper that gives it some feminine.” And they were not afraid to make changes well into an install when something wasn’t going right — like the penny tile in the bathroom that Rob loved but that made Jenny dizzy as soon as she walked into the shower. “We ended up compromising there,” Rob jokes. Jenny was insistent on having a banquette in the kitchen — “She was adamant about it,” says Rob —

Clockwise from left, a massive island is perfect for entertaining, the expansive white offset by the colors and patterns the homeowners and designer Anna Forkum were all so fond of; a banquette was a must-have for Jenny, and they finally were able to make it happen by using an oval table; the Langley and Taylor-designed pool added even more livable space to a yard that was practically unusable before renovations. NASHVILLEINTERIORS.COM | 43

so they went through a couple of different kitchen designers who just could not make it work. They finally worked with Opus, who put in an oval table instead, and it ended up being fantastic. “It’s our favorite,” Jenny says. “Our kids sit there and do homework, and literally all five of us crowd around it and eat dinner.” Moving into a space that was so much bigger than where they had been living meant they bought plenty of new things, but they were still able to incorporate the things that meant the most to them, like Rob’s grandfather’s armoire and Jenny’s grandmother’s chair. “I wanted everything to mean something and not be too precious around it,” Jenny says of what they fill their space with. And the result is everything they could have ever wanted. “We came home from a trip the other night, and I love coming home now,” Jenny says. “I love, love walking into this house.” NI

Jenny Baker worried that the bathroom’s black walls and stark white were getting too masculine. Pretty paper, patterned rugs and a show-stopping chandelier added just the right balance.

MAKE UPDATES TO STAY IN LONGTIME FAMILY HOME

STORY BY HOLLIE DEESE PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLEE MITCHELL

hen Bard and Nancy Quillman hired designer Kimberly Kelly of K7 Interior Design to help them decide whether to age in place or sell their longtime residence to buy something more manageable, Kelly knew there were many things to consider — practicality, emotions, memories, quality of life. “I went on this journey with them to process their options, and in the end they wanted to stay,” Kelly says. “They were brave because they love this house

“Having a large informal dining area in the kitchen was needed for weekend breakfasts and dinners with their adult children and grandkids.” – Kimberly Kelly and decided to remodel instead of sell and move.” So began a major renovation of the first floor of the 4,000-square-foot home — all seven rooms — with the help of Franklin-based contractor Womack Group. And as Kelly began to sculpt the space, they paid close attention to creating circulation paths and well-lit work areas. Walls were moved as the space was manipulated to work best for them. “Having a large informal dining area in the kitchen was needed for weekend breakfasts and dinners with their adult children and grandkids,” Kelly says. “My favorite space is the kitchen’s dining area — the large window looking out on the garden draws you in. She’s an avid gardener and has a beautiful garden. It’s inviting, relaxed and lovely — the perfect trifecta.”

And while Kelly and Nancy Quillman both love color, it took some doing for Kelly to get the homeowner to agree that the kitchen cabinets had to be a strong color. “It took me a while to convince her to take a leap of faith!” Kelly says, laughing. “But now everyone loves the kitchen cabinet color, which is PPG Sailor’s Coat, paired with the classic brass hood.” The home’s amazing natural light was enhanced by the addition of transom windows above many interior doorways, allowing that light to reach farther into the house. With a little persuasion, Kelly was also able to spirit away the heavy drapes and replace them with relaxed, woven shades. They then sanded the floors and stained them a light, natural color.

To stay in the home they raised their children in, the Quillmans hired designer Kimberly Kelly to design a full first-floor renovation that updated and invigorated the space.

Nancy Quillman’s silver collection was pulled out of the drawers and cabinets to grace a dining room that embraces the old in a refreshing, modern way.

“We painted the golden-yellow walls and the dark wood trim with light colors to form the perfect backdrop for the colorful, fun fabrics we selected,” Kelly says. “We purchased several new furniture pieces, but we also reupholstered four antique chairs that are near and dear to the family. I just love the yellow cut-velvet on their Chippendale chairs — they are so animated and wear the fabric (Tobi Fairley for Duralee) so well.” Lighting is from the New Orleans company Sazerac Stitches, and the sofas are Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. The resulting combination provides livable but elevated style that works just as well for entertaining friends as for the grandkids. “It’s important to me that the spaces I design have a relaxed, inviting feel,” Kelly says. “Even the most formal spaces can be elegant and welcoming.” The Quillmans’ home now exudes a somewhat traditional, transitional Southern design that embraces what the couple loves about the home while setting them up to enjoy the rest of their time there together. “I’m so happy I went on this journey with them and love how the project turned out,” Kelly says. “It has so many memories. This is the home they raised their family in, and that meant a lot to them.” NI

eye is drawn.”

“That’s what I love about lighting so much — the emotional response from it,” says Pelham McMurry, owner of Light Up Nashville. “You want to drive home after dark and have it not look like a lifeless, stale building. If it’s lit, it’s warming and inviting.”

Lighting gives homeowners extra outdoor usability too. Back patios, outdoor kitchens, swimming pools and decks — if those areas aren’t lit, they are just not used.

Light Up Nashville began in 2012 as a holiday lighting company. While hanging Christmas lights, McMurry noticed there was a huge gap in outdoor lighting in general, and with quality fixtures in particular. It was a natural service for him to take on, so his company would no longer be strictly seasonal. “There’s an artistry in lighting,” he says. “If you put one huge floodlight 25 feet from the house and you just blast the front of the house with light, it’s going to appear one-dimensional. It’s not going to accent the architecture of the home or really control where the

Well-placed lighting can make a home look more dimensional, more inviting and enhance all the building’s best features, inside and out.

The better way is to “uplight” the house almost straight up, practically kissing the facade of the home. “If there’s brick or stone, it shows that texture, and the little bit of shadowing makes a world of difference,” he says.

“So many people spend a small fortune on their landscaping, their home and their swimming pools, but if they don’t have a lighting system once the sun goes down, all of it goes away.” McMurry deals exclusively in low-voltage lighting, which he says allows for more creativity and flexibility while also being safer and less expensive than line voltage. Plus, he just loves seeing people’s reactions the first time they see their house in a whole new light. “I’ve had clients break down in front of me,” he says. “The reaction that they have is amazing. I never get tired of it. That, to me, is what it’s all about.” NI

LIVABLE LAKEFRONT LUXURY A LIFE WORTH LIVING — AND LEAVING ON THE FLY — ON OLD HICKORY LAKE IN GALLATIN

L

STORY BY HOLLIE DEESE PHOTOGRAPHY BY WILLIAM DESHAZER AND SHAWN CORDON

akefront property is a hot commodity in Middle Tennessee. So is luxurious condo living. At Revery Point condos, in the Foxland Harbor golf community in Gallatin, homeowners can have both.

“We wanted this to be a luxury-level product,” says Joe Godfrey, developer of Revery Point and broker of The Godfrey Group LLC. Sales are being handled by Bailey Godfrey, affiliate broker of The Godfrey Group LLC. Builder Hannah LLC brought in designer Shaun Dougherty, Shaun D. of SDI. Dougherty walks homeowners through the design process piece by piece, starting with the floors and working up. “You’re telling a design story,” Dougherty says. “The most important part is listening to what the client is gravitating toward, getting to know them first. Then it’s easy to pull the selections that we have here to fit their lifestyle.” Having a professional designer on site really speaks to the lock-and-leave lifestyle that Revery Point, designed by Manous Design LLC, offers. It’s turnkey fabulous upon arrival with no NASHVILLEINTERIORS.COM | 71

maintenance — owners can simply lock and leave to go into Nashville or out of town. “The fact that somebody can come in and make choices with an actual interior designer — they feel like they’re being catered to, and that’s part of the luxury,” Dougherty says. Classic beauty abounds, but all of it has a modern twist that is both timeless and on-trend, like the ombre backsplash, wide-plank hand-scraped hardwoods and oversized bathroom tiles. The base appliance package is KitchenAid, with the option to upgrade to Jenn-Air or Sub-Zero. “You don’t really want to over-design,” Dougherty says. “Doing less is so much more because you don’t want to take away from the uniqueness of the condo itself and that beautiful view.”

EASY LIVING APPEALS As the condos go up, the amenity-centered neighborhood will only grow. Plans include a boat dock for residents and a walking trail along the lake. Many new residents are locals who are eager to get on the lake, while out-of-staters are drawn by the on-site amenities and ease of living Revery Point provides.

“If you’re somebody that wants the pool, a wellness center, if you play golf — whatever it might be — you can opt to join the country club and get all that,” Godfrey says. And with a Tennessee Grasslands membership, members have access to two restaurants, two golf courses, two fitness centers and two lakefront pools. Six buildings will be completed in three phases. The second building of phase one is scheduled to be done in May.

Above, Fred Connor and Tina Maria Tarackozy worked with designer Trinity Allen Scharett to choose finishes from many local business, like Luminosity for the lighting and Foster’s Rug Gallery for the rugs. Below, Joe Godfrey and daughter Bailey.

Its proximity to Vietnam Veterans Boulevard puts Revery Point just 30 minutes from the airport and 30 minutes from downtown. And anyone who knows Sumner County knows how hard lakefront homes are to come by, especially brand-new ones with modern finishes. “Being able to live in as nice an environment as Foxland Harbor, and to be on a lake, and so close to the grocery store, and able to jump in your car and go to Nashville? There is nowhere else you can do that,” Godfrey says. The units are designed so every unit has a lake view out of the main living areas and master bedrooms, and there is no wall-sharing between units. Instead, two walls are built with air space between them, both insulated, both with sound-resilient channel, then NASHVILLEINTERIORS.COM | 73

double-sheeted drywall is added on both sides. Zoned for Station Camp Middle, Station Camp High, and Jack Anderson Elementary schools, every unit comes with a reserved space in the parking garage for their building as well as one on the surface level for easy access to the front door. The penthouses come with two reserved spaces in the garage. And when it comes to security, all doors stay locked at all times. Fred Connor and Tina Maria Tarackozy moved into their unit at the end of January, downsizing from their 6,000-square-foot home in nearby Fairvue Plantation to a 2,800-square-foot condo right on the lake. They sold most of their furniture and décor and started fresh. Connor had retired from the print industry. Instead of trading print work for housework and pool upkeep, he wanted a low-maintenance home that got rid of all of the work without losing any of the luxury he was accustomed to. He grew up in Hendersonville, having moved there in 1966, and had always lived on the lake except for his last house in Fairvue. And he couldn’t wait to get back. “I’m a big boater,” he says. Godfrey says he hears the same story over and over from people moving in — just how much they want to leave home maintenance behind.

“They’re tired of the yard work and the big house,” Godfrey says. “Most of them, they have had a luxurylevel, custom home. They’re getting out of that and moving into a condo unit.” For Connor and Tarackozy, it’s exactly what they wanted. “We wanted a place that if somebody called up at 5 in the afternoon and said, ‘Can you be ready by 6 to go out of town?’ we could do it,” Connor says. Especially when the second home they are building in Belize is done. “It’s almost like you’re on vacation all the time living here,” Tarackozy adds. Joe Blazer and Laura Hartle moved in just before March from Libertyville, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. Driven by cold weather and high property taxes, Blazer was on a business lunch in Nashville when his dining companion told him about Revery Point. That night he was on site meeting the Godfreys. “I saw the lake and said, ‘this is what I want,’” Blazer says. He and Hartle had just put in an offer to buy a place in Libertyville to stay close to Hartle’s daughter, but when that offer wasn’t accepted she encouraged him not to give up his dream of living on the lake, and to buy a place at Revery Point instead. “She said, ‘Don’t make another offer, follow your

The dream came true, and now I’m living the dream.” Hartle is already planning on hosting a party for Blazer’s upcoming birthday, and next year they are planning their wedding. “Waking up in the morning with a nice cup of coffee and just looking out here, the peacefulness of it, you can’t beat it,” Blazer says. They will continue to commute to Chicago for a while, taking advantage of the 30 minutes it takes to get to the airport, before they make Gallatin their home full-time. And with three bedrooms they are ready to host Hartle’s daughter and her boyfriend for Easter, and Blazer’s son and his girlfriend, who are just a few hours away in Knoxville. “It’s just incredible,” Hartle says. “It’s so peaceful. It feels so right. It feels like home. We just want to pinch ourselves, really.”

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT: SHAUN D. OF SDI INTERIORS Chattanooga native Shaun Dougherty, Shaun D. of SDI, used to run off the school bus and head straight to the living room to rearrange furniture every day, some not-so-subtle foreshadowing of what her design-minded future would be. “My room changed every month,” she says. These days her personal style is more comfortable and contemporary, with oversized, clean pieces and luxurious touches that feel expensive and polished. It’s an aesthetic that has been honed over her years of experience, first at Nashville’s Renaissance Tile and Bath, then Kenny & Co. But it was her time working at Marc-Michaels Interior Design in Orlando, an internationally acclaimed high-end luxury interior design firm, where she learned what luxe finishes could do to elevate a space. “I just fine-tuned what high-end design is all about,” she says. That’s what makes her role as lead designer at Revery Point a position custom-made for her. She gets to build on her experience, working with buyers on luxury finishes for their new penthouses. Above, all of the condos have masters that face the lake and tons of natural light for guest bedrooms. Right, Tarackozy worked with Alpha Designs to convert one of the guest bedrooms into the kind of closet you never want to leave.

“I understand what the client wants,” she says. “They have high-end standards. What is really challenging and fun about this project is selecting finishes that could cover all personality types. Then seeing their reactions to all of the finishes that we have to offer is wonderful.” It’s hard not to get excited when the offerings include quartz and Sub-Zero appliances. “They get so excited about the products that we have, and it’s so easy to do the selections with them,” she says. “That just makes things so easy for the design process, and it’s so nice to hear them say it’s exactly what they wanted — because that means I’m doing my job well.” NI

BUILDING, DESIGN + DEVELOPMENT

A

COUPLE EMBRACE THE FINER ASPECTS OF DOWNTOWN LIVING

COLLECTED

LIFE BY HOLLIE DEESE PHOTOGRAPHY BY REEVES SMITH

W

hen an architect falls in love with a building — even when it isn’t theirs — they have a tendency to get ideas and make plans. Usually they don’t get an opportunity to make those plans happen. But sometimes they do.

Ron Gobbell had moved in 2002 to The Quarters, downtown condos for which he designed the renovations. He walked by, and dreamed about, his current home every day for four years. Two parts of the 19th-century Church Street property were housing a law firm, and a portion had been empty for nearly 30 years. That abandoned part became available for purchase, and he jumped on it. After discussions with the law firm in 2006, they all agreed that he would develop all three buildings together. “I have a passion for historic style,” Gobbell says. “This building was built in 1852, so the roots were laid eight years before Lincoln was president. It was kind of a spec building, three buildings built together at the same time.” They put seventeen units in the Church Street Lofts, and then Gobbell and his partner, Janet Kurtz, moved into one condo. (Kurtz runs Kurtz Hospitality Marketing, which boasts clients like Black Rabbit, Butchertown Hall and Liberty Common.) Former Regions Bank CEO Jim Schmitz moved into another condo, and a third unit on the corner went to someone else.

NASHVILLEINTERIORS.COM | 83

Above, post renovations what was once their living room is now the dining and kitchen area, with a lofted bedroom on the floor above with a spiral staircase that leads to the rooftop deck. Across, architectural elements from the 1800s remain, like the beam that runs across the wall and the original flooring. Their coffee table is what was once their front door before renovations. “It has a special meaning to me,” Gobbell says.

“Ron is really a downtown pioneer,” Kurtz says. “A lot of people don’t realize but he opened his architecture firm 41 years ago, and then moved his office space into downtown.” Gobbell recently sold the GBH Environmental + Architecture firm, previously known as Gobbell Hays, to his daughter Dominque Arrieta while he runs the firm’s project management group. He was architect of the MiLB Nashville Sounds stadium, and he is currently managing the MLS Soccer stadium project. When owner of the corner unit passed away, Gobbell bought that space, too, reconfiguring the condos again like a sort of Tetris game. He sold his and Kurtz’ lowerlevel master bedroom to their neighbor and combined the newly purchased corner space with their middle unit for a total of 3,000 square feet. What was once their entrance hall is now a wine cellar that can hold about 500 bottles, though Gobbell jokes they drink it almost as fast as they collect it. What was once their living room is now an open space that houses dining room, kitchen and entertainment. The original master bedroom is now a closet.

84 | NASHVILLEINTERIORS.COM

MAKING IT MEANINGFUL The couple have chosen meaningful items to fill the space over the past 13 years, but none of it is too precious. A favorite vase of Kurtz’ was brought back from Iran when Gobbell was in the Peace Corps. The dining room table was Gobbell’s mother’s. They had an original door from the middle condo fashioned into a coffee table. “We like to have people over, and if a glass of wine gets spilled, a glass of wine gets spilled,” Kurtz says. “We don’t want to have to go to pieces over something like that. We have fun, and our lifestyle — relaxed luxury, livable luxury — is absolutely what defines every decision that we make.” A sailboat model displayed in the dining area was left to Gobbell by his longtime business partner Steve Hays, who passed away last year. He also bequeathed them some cases of wine he had collected over the years, mainly ’90s vintages that were not properly cared for in later years. They provide a hit-or-miss experience for the couple each time they pop a bottle.

“We just open them up, and if we got a good one, we got a good one,” Gobbell says. “But we always toast him. He was a good guy.” Kurtz and Gobbell came to their relationship with their own art collections. “I think that’s actually why we got together, because he wanted some of my pieces of art,” Kurtz jokes. Examples of everything from mixedmedia works and paintings to sculptures can be found all around their condo. “The Arts Company is a tenant of ours, in our building, and Anne Brown is an old friend of mine. We collect, and we buy stuff that has a story that means something to us. We don’t just collect for investing — we wouldn’t know how that would even work,” Gobbell says.

Left, cables and steel make for a beautiful staircase. Above, their home is filled with things that make them happy, like an Eames lounge chair and ottoman, art from The Arts Co., an ever-changing collection of wine, a dining room table that belonged to Gobbell’s mom, a model sailboat passed down from Gobbell’s beloved business partner Steve Hays. NASHVILLEINTERIORS.COM | 87

In renovating and changing the layout of the buildings, they were both conscious of making sure the light got in as much as possible, a feat that can be difficult in a downtown setting crowded with sun-stealing buildings.

88 | NASHVILLEINTERIORS.COM

NASHVILLEINTERIORS.COM | 89

DOING WHAT FEELS RIGHT Ultimately, the way Gobbell and Kurtz live is all about what feels right and about the downtown lifestyle — something neither would ever want to trade. “Of all the places I lived it has the most sense of community because you see somebody else who lives downtown and you all kind of bond,” Gobbell says. Kurtz’ attraction to downtown living goes back years.

The view from their rooftop deck is one for the books, and the couple use the elevator often in the summer — loading it up with food and party supplies to make entertaining even easier.

“One of the reasons that I was inspired to live downtown — in addition to us being together — was that when I had been to Paris in college studying abroad, we stayed with this woman who had a place that was not dissimilar from this. It was much, much larger, but it had the elements of the historic building with the brick and exposed ductwork,” Kurtz says. “It was beautiful, and we could just walk everywhere. We had no shortage of restaurants or access to transportation and nightlife and livelihood, and it just had such a great cosmopolitan feel.” Their elevator goes all the way to the fourth floor where a rooftop deck puts them face-to-face with a key feature of Nashville’s downtown skyline — the AT&T building on Commerce. “The sun is just wonderful up here,” Gobbell says. onnecticut native Adam Cremona never intended to make furniture, or to live in Nashville. After high school he put college on hold to travel the world, snowboard and make music. “I lived in Thailand for a little bit and just wanted to experience things other than education — a different kind of education,” he says.

“My father is 84 now, but he was an architect in New York and always had projects for us to do around the house — building decks and things like that, swinging a hammer. But I’d never been drawn to furniture,” he says. He started making stuff on the tailgate of his pickup truck, though, and word of mouth began to spread. The couple then moved to Hermitage, and
