As we enter the holiday season, I like to reflect on the traditions that make this time of year special. My family and I always observe the holidays with a house full of decorations and music. We also have our favorite holiday movies–we watch everything from Christmas Vacation to White Christmas and all the classics in between. Of course, Nashville Public Library is a part of this season, too. After all, the traditions we keep reflect the things we care about–and our library shows the world we are a diverse, welcoming community that values reading, education, and empowerment for everyone. The best thing about making merry at NPL? Our holiday concerts, craft times, and other events are free.

Did you know a third of people who make New Year’s resolutions don’t keep them past January? We asked our readers what they want to accomplish in 2019 and matched them with free library resources to get there. Because, this year, we’re determined to make the goal–but not break the bank.
Juanita F. Edmondson Pike Branch Library Retired
Christopher P. Main Library Musician
Juanita’s resolution for 2019: do some recommended exercise each day.
Christopher’s resolution for 2019: spend more quality time with his kids and invest in their learning.
We have the perfect initiative for Juanita. It’s called Be Well at NPL, and it includes free exercise classes, health education workshops, healthy cooking and nutrition demonstrations, and more.
Boy, is that right up NPL’s alley, or what?!
Every day, all around the county, Juanita can attend a free Medicare seminar, a yoga class, or a meditation session. Right at her home branch library, Edmondson Pike, she can take advantage of Senior Medical University 101–monthly health-related presentations for seniors (and lunch, too!). By taking advantage of free events like this—and as she meets others who have similar goals to build a support network—Juanita should have no trouble getting some exercise every day in 2019. Learn more library.nashville.org/bewellatnpl Be Well is made possible by BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, HCA Foundation, and National Network of Libraries of Medicine.

This is the perfect time for Christopher and his children to learn about outer space during Nashville Reads, our yearly citywide book club. This year, we’re all reading Hidden Figures, by Margot Lee Shetterly. It’s the true story of four brilliant African-American women who helped the U.S. to soar into the galaxy. Solar System Ambassador Theo Wellington is bringing “Living in Space” and “Counting Stars” presentations for families to NPL. Maybe Christopher’s children will be inspired to study engineering or space travel! Learn more: nashvillereads.org And, after Nashville Reads ends, Christopher should take advantage of ReadyRosie, a free subscription to get fun, easy tips for incorporating reading and literacy into everyday home life.
