From the Director
A library card at Nashville Public Library (NPL) is free. But how do you really measure NPL’s value to patrons, library supporters, and Davidson County residents? In partnership with the Nashville Public Library Foundation, we commissioned the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce to put a price tag on the priceless. The research geniuses at the Chamber crunched the numbers, and here’s what they found: The market value of what people save by using our collections is $141, per person. That’s $141 a year – not only for our library cardholders, but also for each of the 668,000-plus residents of Davidson County. What’s more, families who really take advantage of all NPL offers – everything from our materials to our story times, classes, workshops, and programs, can save $2,951 a year. That’s almost $3,000 to put toward other expenses, such as gas, groceries, vacation, or college tuition. So, be proud of your Nashville Public Library card. As I’ve been saying for years: it’s the most important piece of plastic in your wallet!

SUMMER READING MATTERS Kids who don’t read
over the summer
months may be up to
two years behind
their classmates by the end of 6th grade. (National Center for Summer Learning)
22%
of the school year has to be retaught
due to summer slide (National Summer Learning Association)
Reading
4 or 5 books
over the summer can
prevent a decline in
reading-achievement scores for middle school students. (Source: Summer Reading and the Ethnic Achievement Gap, Harvard)
the achievement gap is 2/3 ofcaused by unequal access
to summer learning opportunities
in the elementary school years (National Summer Learning Association)
Nashville Public Library’s Summer Reading Program prevents students from falling behind.
Nashville Public Library’s Summer Challenge Program: Engages more than 20,000 children, teens and adults in reading and service-related activities and helps advance literacy and academic performance.
Has a return on investment of $230 per summer reader and more than $3 million collectively.
