Summer Challenge
16 - 17
NPL This time last year, in my Director’s message for the Summer 2014 issue of Unbound, I wrote about the importance of summer reading. It’s time again for me to refocus on summer learning with a seasonal call to all readers and patrons: Register now for NPL’s 2015 Summer Challenge. Here are three reasons to join the program:
• You’ll have fun • You’ll win prizes • You can help change your child’s school performance
Reasons No.1 and 2 are straightforward. Nashvillians of all ages will have fun as they earn points for prizes. For example, if you visit a nearby park, download a free song from our online music collection, and write a poem, you’ll be on your way to free admission at Adventure Science Center, Climb Nashville, or BounceU (among other local attractions). Reason No. 3 - your chance to change your child’s school performance - is worth more explanation. Students must read and reason throughout the summer, so they can practice and keep fresh their hard-earned language and math skills. If they fail to pick up a book or stretch their minds all summer, students often suffer significant learning loss. In the library world, we call this depletion “summer slide.” One summer alone can cost a student up to three months’ worth of learning loss.
Summer 2015 • Issue no. 9 Mayor Karl F. Dean Library Board Keith B. Simmons, Library Board Chair Lucy D. Haynes Francie M. Hunt Sepideh C. Khansari Robert K. Oermann Margaret Ann Robinson Joyce Searcy
The Library Board meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at noon. Contact (615) 862-5760 for location and information about Library Board meetings. Requests for ADA accommodation should be directed to Sandy Cohen at 862-5750 or 862-5752.

What’s more, kids are unable to make up summer slide when they restart school in the fall. That means, with every year students experience summer slide, they will ultimately fall significantly behind their peers. I hope you’ll discover (or rediscover) Summer Challenge. I know you will enjoy the results you see when your child goes back to school in fall 2015. Your nearest librarian at any of our 21 locations can visit with you more about Summer Challenge, as well as our entire suite of education programs:
• Studio NPL digital and creative learning for teens • Homeework help and learning kits • Limitless Libraries program to bring NPL books and resources to local schools
Nashville Public Library is deliberate about our investments in education. We are an education partner to the people of this city. The programs we offer do not exist like this anywhere else in Nashville - not to this level of quality, and not to our level of 110 percent free accessibility. In other words, during the days and hours your children are not in their traditional school classrooms, we believe they should be at NPL. Please visit any of our 21 locations soon to register for Summer Challenge, or join online at http://www.library.nashville.org/summerchallenge/. Happy reading!

How do you like us now?
New Looby Branch Look
NPL The Looby branch of Nashville Public Library reopened on March 25 with a more modern and inviting look. The facility, nearly 40 years old, now features new furniture, a new circulation desk and a special children’s area. Looby has a special story behind its name: The branch library and adjacent Metro community center are named after Z. Alexander Looby, who immigrated to the United States from the British West Indies in 1914. Dr. Looby arrived in Nashville in 1926 to teach economics at Fisk University. He was elected to Nashville’s city council in 1951. He later served on the Metropolitan Charter Commission that helped create the Metro Davidson County Government. Dr. Looby provided legal support for students who were arrested for their peaceful sit-in demonstrations at segregated downtown lunch counters. He also helped found Kent College of Law in Nashville, even though he had been denied membership into the American Bar Association in the 1950s because of his race. In December 1976, Metro officials and friends of the late Dr. Looby dedicated the Looby branch library, community center and theater to his memory.
the Main Library Children’s area is closed and Bordeaux Branch as well?
NPL
We’ll close the Children’s area at the Main Library in July for several months to give this space a major transformation. Don’t worry - other than a short interruption for new paint and carpet work, the Wishing Chair theater will remain open. Story times and puppets shows should resume in August. Additionally, we’ll make a temporary children’s book collection available in another section of the building.
The Bordeaux branch of Nashville Public Library, 4000 Clarksville Pike, closed for renovations on April 1. The library location should reopen in late summer 2015. Renovations to the Bordeaux location, a 20,000-square-foot building that opened in 2000, will include new carpeting, improved lighting and the installation of a central service desk. Bordeaux is the latest Library facility to be renovated as NPL modernizes its 21 locations over the next several years. In February, the North Branch Library reopened with new paint, lighting, wiring, plumbing, and new furniture. Old Hickory, Edgehill and Pruitt branches were updated in 2014. For complete details on branch locations and schedules, as well as Library-sponsored events taking place around Nashville, visit www.library.nashville.org or call 615.862.5800.

Nashville Public Library Foundation When Andrew Carnegie helped Nashville establish its first public library more than a century ago, books were the only story. Today, Nashville Public Library serves the community in ways and in numbers that Carnegie couldn’t have imagined. The Nashville Public Library Foundation has been part of the library’s phenomenal success since 1997. Since the inception of this thriving partnership between local government funding and private philanthropy, the foundation has raised more than $30 million to enhance the library’s programs, facilities and collections.
I did not realize all the programs the foundation supports.
NPL
Gifts to NPLF help create a more literate, educated and connected Nashville community by funding award-winning early reading programs, employment services, teen spaces, after school programs, outdoor concerts, author series and more. Your support will ensure that more than 650,000 Nashville children, teens and adults have access to free educational opportunities for years to come. Visit nplf.org to learn more!

NAZA Celebrates 5 years! Since the Nashville AfterZone Alliance launched in 2010, it has engaged 5,000 middle school students over its first 5 years. Mayor Karl Dean launched NAZA to provide a much-needed system of afterschool support for Nashville’s middle school youth. This year NAZA expanded county-wide, with 44 sites providing extended learning opportunities to students from 25 MNPS middle schools. In July of 2014 NAZA became part of Nashville Public Library, and we look forward to deepening the love of reading across the system. On March 30, NAZA supporters, including the Mayor, Metro Council members, MNPS leaders, the Wallace Foundation and other funders, many community partners, parents, and others gathered to celebrate 5 exciting years. Students showed off their visual art projects, a dance routine, and original music. The celebration clearly showed the importance of creating opportunities for young people to develop and express their passion, potential, creativity, and determination. We look forward to lots more middle-school adventures over the next 5 years!
Happy birthday, Naza!

How do I use the Seed Exchange?
Use your Nashville Public Library card to "check out" vegetable, herb, and flower seeds at the Main Library, Bellevue, Bordeaux, Donelson, Edgehill, Edmondson Pike, Green Hills, Goodlettsville, Inglewood, or Southeast branch libraries. The best part about our Seed Exchange: it's free! All you need is a Nashville Public Library card.
What do I need to do when I harvest seeds?
We ask that you follow certain protocol for seed you bring to Nashville Public Library Seed Exchange. We want people who take seed to get what was on the label, and we want to protect from passing on disease.
The following is our basic protocol*
Save from healthy plants. Even if a disease does not get passed on through the seed, we do like to have some selection for disease resistance by only saving from healthy, strong plants. Save from a number of plants so that the seed has some genetic diversity in it. The quantity that is optimum depends on the type of plant; for self-pollinating plants a minimum of 6 plants is necessary, for cross-pollinating, you'll want to save from a much larger population. If the plant cross-pollinates, make sure to keep it isolated so it stays "true to type." Check with a seed saving chart or book to get proper isolation distances. When you give seed to the Seed Exchange, please label with as much information as you can. Many like to save seed from a favorite that might not be saved from a number of plants or isn't super healthy, or maybe they just like some interesting crosses. You are welcome to bring those seeds. Just make sure you write that down on the label so others know they are participating in your experiment. *Adapted from the Seed Protocol from the West County Community Seed Exchange, Sonoma Co., California
What about returning seeds to the library? Here are guidelines to follow for bringing us your seeds:
Dry: Make sure seeds are dry. Clean: Return reasonably clean seeds by removing as much of the chaff as possible. Properly saved: Only return seeds from plants that you know how to save properly. Some seeds can be fairly reliably saved without cross-pollination (and unintentional hybridization). These include tomatoes, beans, peas and lettuce. Only return seeds from the brassica (ex. broccoli, cauliflower, kale, brussels sprouts, cabbage) or cucurbit (ex. cucumbers, squash, melons) families if you have taken appropriate steps to prevent cross-pollination, such as hand-pollinating. Label! Label! Label! Give us as much information as possible (variety, location, year saved, helpful hints, etc.). Remember that people only have as much information about a seed as what you have written on the package in order to decide if it is a plant that they would like to grow. More information is better.
Grow Together Share your garden! Connect with other gardeners on our Seed Exchange facebook page http://www.library.nashville.org/info/seedexchange.asp. Share tips, post pictures of your garden, and get advice from other growers.
