Wishing Chair Thinking Out of the LunchBox

As we celebrate National Library Week, April 10-16, we call attention to how public libraries change lives and communities through education. In today’s Internet-driven world, leading in education means we must provide traditional and digital learning opportunities. Every day, at our 21 locations across town, we work with patrons who struggle in the digital divide, where Internet connectivity is low or nonexistent, and where people lack the skills they need to use the Internet meaningfully. We see how life in this divide limits our patrons’ options for employment, education, and social mobility. That’s why I was honored to join other public libraries in January at a White House convening, where we shared ideas for how libraries across the U.S. can lead in digital education. For its part, NPL is proud to be one of 16 organizations across the country chosen by Google and the Nonprofit Technology Network to host a Google Fiber Digital Inclusion Fellow. Through Limitless Libraries, our partnership with Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS), students at 125 schools use NPL’s ebooks, online music and movies, and databases right from their own school libraries. Last year, middle and high school students created nearly 8,700 self-designed digital media and art projects at our Studio NPL “makerspaces” (six in all, plus a mobile Studio). Monthly, as many as 3,000 Nashvillians use our 800 public-use computers, free Wi-Fi, and laptop checkout kiosks. They learn to use computers and software, apply for jobs online, and use our online collections at free classes across the city. To create a more digitally literate Nashville, collaboration is essential. We look forward to continuing our work with many community partners as we help span what is a very real digital divide and raise our city’s collective “digital IQ.”

Check it Out: Four Spring Library Picks From Your Local Librarian

Check out these items from our print, music, and online collections - hand picked by two of our librarian experts.

Laurie’s Picks Little White Lie (DVD)

Lacey Schwartz grows up in a typical, upper-middle-class Jewish household with loving parents and a strong sense of her Jewish identity. Her family tells her she got her looks from her darkskinned, Sicilian grandfather. But, at age 18, Lacey confronts her mother and learns the truth.

Mixed Me by Tay Diggs (Juvenile Fiction)

Some kids call him “Mixed-up Mike.” People stare at Mike and his parents when they’re out as a family. But Mike loves his deep-brown, bald-headed dad and his cream-and-honey, red-haired mom - and clearly they love him, too.

Running With Scissors: A Memoir by Augusten Burroughs (Memoir)

Deciding she needs more space for personal exploration and art, 12-yearold Augusten’s mother, a divorcee, packs her son off to the home of psychiatrist Dr. Finch, a wildly eccentric egomaniac.

Listening Is An Act Of Love (Adult Non-Fiction)

12

StoryCorps - the largest oral history project in the nation’s history - presents a tapestry of American stories, told by the people who lived them to the people they love.

About Laurie Laurie is responsible for NPL’s music and movie selections, as well as adult non-fiction picks. Laurie started working at NPL in 2001, at the Edmondson Pike branch library. She spends her free time at the Belcourt, Nashville’s local independent movie theater.

J.D.’s Picks Ex Machina (DVD)

This science-fiction thriller is about a tech billionaire who uses a computer programmer to test his newly developed android’s artificial intelligence. This movie is a modern take on what happens when machines become self-aware. It has a great musical score, sweeping long shots, and a slow moving plot that allows the suspense to build.

Just Kids by Patti Smith (Autobiography)

Patti Smith’s memoir takes the reader to the beginning of her transformation from a poor bohemian book store clerk to one of the leaders of New York City’s growing art scene.

Station to Station by David Bowie (CD)

After bringing us Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane, Bowie once again disappears only to come forth with The Thin White Duke. This album also serves as a transformation of sorts from Bowie’s early success to a new, more experimental sound.

Moby Dick by Herman Melville (Fiction)

Melville is a post-modernist in his writing style, bringing you in and out of the story to give you facts and figures and everything you really need to know about whaling. He brings the story even more into focus, giving you an ultimate association with Ishmael, Ahab, and my favorite character, Queequeg.

About J.D.

J.D. is the branch manager at the Goodlettsville branch library. He joined NPL in September 2015. He’s a musician and had a band called The Dewey Decibels that performed at various library programs.

Healthy Aging with Nashville Public Television Nashville Public Television’s Aging Matters examines broadly the pursuit of health and well-being as we age. The things that matter most in life are the same whether you are 65, 95, or 25 – community, meaningful relationships, and a sense of purpose.

Bilingual Song and Story Time with Rachel Rodriguez Join Rachel as she reads, sings, plays, and dances, featuring the Latino culture, Spanish language and music. Nashville Ballet presents Cinderella Join the Fairy Godmother as she shares the story of Cinderella’s magical night. Using fun-filled movement, enchanted music, and actual photographs from Nashville Ballet’s own production, this highly interactive story time will whisk you away to the ball and back again.

Economics of Aging with Nashville Public Television In this edition of Aging Matters, Nashville Public Television examines the costs and financial impact of aging and hears from people navigating financial decisions now. T he future is always uncertain, but what is important is that we take time to look ahead, discuss, and prepare for the economics of aging.
