With National Library Card Month upon us I have been thinking about all the reasons I’m glad I own a Nashville Public Library card, which is available to everyone in Davidson County and beyond. In reality it’s a pass to the public library that in 2017 was chosen as the best in North America.
In the tradition of great, late-night programming, there is no better way to list the reasons you’re proud of something than a Top 10 list. So, here goes: My library card is free and fills the space where cash used to be in my wallet. I can binge watch my favorite shows. Time to catch up on “Better Call Saul!” The library doesn’t charge fines anymore so no more overdue book jokes at parties.
FROM THE
DIRECTOR
My next favorite read is at my fingertips in digital, physical, and audio formats. I’ve mastered using all three at once (but not while I’m driving, of course). I know for a fact that my privacy is protected, and the library will never try to sell me anything. The pick-your-books-up-at-any-of-our-21 locations is like Uber Eats delivery, but for books and without the carbs. With my free access to Consumer Reports, I can figure out which year Mustang to replace my ‘97 with. Thanks to the Book Club in a Bag kits, my dream of starting a book club about the works of Pat Conroy is finally a reality. Free access to Photoshop classes through Lynda.com means my selfies have never looked better (or as good as they can)! I’m a proud part of one of the city’s treasured institutions. No punchline here. It just feels great to belong to a community where all people and all ideas are welcome and respected. Bonus: Did I mention it’s free? If you don’t have your card, join the NPL family today at library.nashville.org/getacard. Can’t wait to hear about your Top 10 when you do.
Happy reading,
Kent Oliver Director of Nashville Public Library
