In early July of 1969, I loaded onto a school bus with fellow Boy Scouts from the Jayhawk Area Council in Topeka, KS and headed for Idaho to attend the Boy Scout National Jamboree. Neil Diamond songs were sung ad nauseam throughout the trip because one of my friends had a guitar and only knew a few songs—almost all of which were Diamond’s. Astronaut and Eagle Scout Neil A. Armstrong sent the 34,251 Scouts at the Jamboree his greetings from space on July 18th during his trip to the Moon with Buzz Aldrin. I vividly remember sitting in the amphitheater with thousands of Scouts while Armstrong spoke to us from a screen—it was a lot like being at a drive-in movie. We were all thrilled when just a few days later, word spread through the camp that he had walked on the Moon. It has been fifty years since the Moon landing, but our fascination with the cosmos is as strong as ever. This year’s Summer Reading Challenge theme is all about space, and we’re looking for “reading rocketeers”of all ages to set reading goals that shoot for the stars.

Warning: These Reads Are Addictive. It might be hot outside, Laurie is reading: but these reads will Daisy Jones & The Six, by Taylor Jenkins Reid leave a chill. FOR TEENS & ADULTS

Emily is reading: The Night Gardener, by Jonathan Auxier

Beat the heat this summer with a book that will send chills down your spine. When orphans Molly and Kip arrive at the Windsor Estate to work, they know something isn’t right. For starters, the tree that grows alongside the house seems to be growing into the house. Plus, the entire Windsor family is turning ghostly pale. Can Molly and Kip uncover the mystery of the Windsor Estate before it’s too late? This book is recommended for teen and young adult readers, but adults enjoy it, too.

Emily is a Teen/Children’s Associate at Edgehill Branch Library. When she’s not planning programs or hanging out in the kids’ room at her branch, Emily spends her days reading, writing, trying new recipes, and playing board games. She loves most books and all dogs.

Sarah is reading: A Murder in Music City,

by Michael Bishop

Come on backstage … If you spent hours devouring album cover illustrations and liner notes, then you are going to love Daisy Jones. The interview format of Daisy Jones & The Six is addictive (the stay-up-all-night, driven-by-a-large-espresso-consumed-toolate-in-the-afternoon kind of addictive). Fledgling rock band The Six is on the edge of stardom when Daisy Jones steps up to the microphone and creates harmonies with lead singer Billy. The seductive and static energy between band members will keep you transfixed. Recommended for adult readers.

Laurie works in the Collection Development Department. She selects adult music, movies, and non-fiction titles for Nashville Public Library system. Born in Brooklyn and raised in East Tennessee, Laurie has lived in Nashville for 15 years.

Beth is reading: Batch Cocktails,

by Maggie Hoffman, and Dry: Delicious Handcrafted Cocktails and Other Clever Concoctions, by Clare Liardet

Summertime is a good time to read about Nashville history, and this book will give you a juicy tale to while away the summer hours. The unfortunate death of young Paula Herring is rehashed in this book with a new goal in mind: finding out who really killed her. This book might even send you out on a driving adventure to see the key places that author Michael Bishop identifies in the story—starting with NPL’s own Metro Archives!

Summer is a great time for outdoor cocktails with friends, whether you’re a drinker or a non-drinker. For the former, we have Batch Cocktails, a new collection of 65 easy pitcher drinks that can be made ahead of time. For the latter, there’s Dry: Delicious Handcrafted Cocktails, which offers refreshing non-alcoholic drink recipes such as the Paloma Fizz, Watermelon Mary, and Rhubarb Spritz. Both have lovely photographs for inspiration, as well. Cheers! Recommended for adult readers.

Sarah is an Archives Assistant with Metro Archives. Her interests and areas of expertise are history, literature, music, travel, Harry Potter, and Alf. If not in the Archives, she’ll most likely be found playing trivia somewhere.

Beth works in the Collection Development department. She loves short stories, memoirs, documentary films, and cookbooks. Her favorite things about working at the library are the Salon@615 series and the easy access to her library holds.

Did you know? Metro Archives keeps some unlikely treasures tucked away in their department. Swing by the Metro Archives and explore the past with rarities including original photos of the Gerst Brewing Company factory, a handwritten letter from thenSenator John F. Kennedy, and photos from Barnum & Bailey Circus’ 1937 visit to Nashville!

We bring best-selling authors to Nashville for free book talks and signings. See who’s coming next: salonat615.org

This Book Is Better Than Binge-watching TV. Amanda is reading: The Book of Essie, by Meghan MacLean Weir

The basis of this book is a family reality TV show—along the lines of 19 Kids and Counting or Kate + 8—of which I’ve never been a big fan. Esther Ann Hicks is the youngest family member on Six for Hicks. Her daddy is a pastor, and her mama does everything she can to hide/fix the fact that Essie is pregnant. I wasn’t expecting much until the book started taking some unexpected twists. I enjoyed it so much that I finished it the same day I started. Recommended for adult readers.

Amanda is a classically trained pianist who loves to read. Like any good librarian, she also has two cats named after Italian cities. Amanda spends her free time sitting in Nashville traffic, baking, and running the Interlibrary Loan office at the Nashville Public Library.

Why should you have to choose just one story? Paul is reading: The Best American Short Stories of the Century, by John Updike, ed.

This is an ambitious read for the summer, but one you’ll never forget. The stories are arranged chronologically through the 20th century, and the reading experience is one of watching history unfurl before your eyes. What I loved most about these was finishing a story—night after night—and saying out loud, “Oh, my God...”.

Paul Smethers, a former high school English teacher, is an Associate with the Popular Materials team. He hosts a monthly poetry appreciation group, the Word Art Poetry Discussion Group, and teaches a six-week poetry writing course in the spring, Wolf Tickets and Pickled Peppers.

What’s an Interlibrary Loan? We’re so glad you asked. If we don’t own a print book you’re looking for, we can borrow it for you from another library: library.nashville.org/interlibraryloan

Try A New Genre. Jeremy is reading: X-Men: Grand Design, by Ed Piskor

Ed Piskor rose to prominence with Hip Hop Family Tree, an exhaustive study of the history of hip hop in comic book form. Next, Piskor set his sights on Marvel’s X-Men, and the results are fantastic. In X-Men: Grand Design, he takes a streamlined approach to nearly 30 years of X-Men continuity, creating a treat for longtime fans and an easily accessible primer for newbies.

Home Delivery

Use our online catalog to browse for a book (or books) you want, place a hold, and we’ll send it (or them) to the NPL location of your choice for pick-up.

Jeremy has worked for Nashville Public Library since 2008. He loves comic books and dislikes the term “graphic novels.” He hosts Panel Discussion, a comics book club for adults, on the first Wednesday of the month at noon at the Main Library, 615 Church Street.

Join Jeremy to talk more about X-Men: Grand Design at noon on June 5 at The Commons in the Main Library. This summer, Panel Discussion also meets July 3 and August 7.
