Nashville, we’re looking for the next rock star. Since we’re in Music City, you might think I’m talking about the type of rock star who plays the guitar like Jimi Hendrix or wails on vocals like Freddie Mercury. It’s true: we’re looking for people who are legendary. But our search is for Nashvillians who stand out because they see how far we have to go to achieve citywide literacy, and they want to do something about it. When they reach the third grade, an estimated 4,700 Davidson County students will not be reading at grade level. In other words, they’ll miss this crucial milestone that is a predictor for high school graduation, according to the Blueprint for Early Childhood Success. That’s why we need reading rock stars who can help us do more for Nashville’s children.

DIRECTOR Rock with NPL all summer on the Library Blog Reading and Music Picks from Your Local Librarians
library.nashville.org/blog
This year, the NPL Summer Challenge is back. It’s a seasonal initiative we use to encourage kids to keep reading and stay sharp during school break so they can return to the classroom ready to succeed. Our 2018 goal for Nashville is to read for a collective 10 million minutes. That’s where you, our rock stars, come into play. If you have young people in your life, read to them. Read with them. Encourage them to read 20 minutes a day; it makes a difference. If you don’t, we still need you. Read every day. Read in public. Be seen reading on a park bench or listening to an audiobook on the treadmill at the gym. Send the message that Nashville is a Reading City—capital R, capital C. The good news is you can do this for free with Nashville Public Library resources. Your free library card gets you access to two million-plus titles in print and online. To get your card, go to library.nashville.org. To get involved in this year’s Summer Challenge and help us get to 10 million reading minutes, go to library.nashville.org/summerchallenge. Thank you for making our city rock in more ways than one.
Happy reading,
Kent Oliver Director of Nashville Public Library

Nashville Public Library (NPL) is committed to education as a tool for empowering people to unlock their potential. Our investment in local education occurs every day as we provide quality classes, workshops, books, and resources at locations across Davidson County and online. We know success begins with access to quality education experiences. For example, we know children must build early literacy skills in order to later be successful in school and beyond. We know the time students spend reading and learning after school and during the summer makes a significant difference in their lives. We know meaningful learning can also occur outside the traditional classroom, as students build digital, artistic, and life skills. And we know learning doesn’t have an expiration date: with the right support, resources, and inspiration, it happens at every stage of life. Our city has wrapped its arms around NPL’s education mission. Partnerships are a cornerstone of our operations. We join forces and resources with organizations in every corner of Nashville, and we go outside library halls and walls to take our resources to community sites across town. Thanks to the Nashville Public Library Foundation and its generous donors and corporate sponsors, the library can offer its resources at no cost to local families. These public-private partnerships help us reach further into every corner of our community and do more. Where will Nashville Public Library take you?
NURTURING YOUNG BOOKWORMS: BRINGING BOOKS TO LIFE! We believe children will learn to read, and later read to learn, when they first read for fun. Bringing Books to Life! (BBTL) is NPL’s early reading outreach program. The library’s team of educators delivers Pre-K reading workshops for teachers, parents, caregivers, and families across Nashville, in both English and Spanish. Participants get supplies and tips for easy activities to incorporate early literacy behaviors—reading, singing, writing, talking, and playing—in their classrooms and homes. Teachers also get to see these tips in action through BBTL’s rollicking story times at childcare centers and preschools.
The Puppet Truck arrives a week after our story time and sets up right in our classroom, and we are transported to times and places that we could never visit on a school bus. It is magical. Stephanie Birdwell, Pre-K teacher In 1938, Tom Tichenor introduced puppetry to the library with his staging of Puss in Boots. Tichenor went on to earn national and international fame. He returned to the library to retire, gifting 250 of his original, handmade marionettes to NPL. These characters of Tichenor’s now travel our city, riding in the Library’s Puppet Truck to provide a big, fantastic finale for BBTL’s work. The library’s professional puppeteers perform the same story children have been exploring in the classroom. As puppeteers bring this story “to life,” an early spark for books and reading is ignited. “The Puppet Truck arrives a week after our story time and sets up right in our classroom, and we are transported to times and places that we could never visit on a school bus. It is magical,” said Stephanie Birdwell, a Pre-K teacher at DuPont Elementary school. Most of Birdwell’s students don’t get to library story times very often, and the school can’t always afford library field trips. “The best part for me every season is to watch the children’s faces as they laugh, sing, and anticipate what is coming next because they know the story so well by then … I’ve had many parents come back to me and tell me their child provided an ‘after-dinner puppet show’ at their house with the puppets they made … This is what learning is all about to me! My students’ confidence and their excitement is contagious, and we all catch it!”
BBTL has a few “secret weapons” in its early literacy toolkit. They’re not metallic, pointy, or sharp, but instead, soft, fuzzy, and plush.
Bringing Books to Life! is made possible by the Blakney Foundation, Cal Turner Family Foundation, Dan and Margaret Maddox Charitable Fund, Dollar General Literacy Foundation, Willard R. and Frances J. Hendrix Foundation, Tennessee Arts Commission, and the Nashville Public Library Foundation.

ENGAGING STUDENTS AFTER SCHOOL: NAZA The Nashville After Zone Alliance (NAZA) funds programs that offer high quality after-school and summer activities at various schools and community-based locations around Nashville to support students’ interest and engagement in learning and building important 21st-Century skills. A partnership of Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS), the Mayor’s Office, and Nashville Public Library, NAZA ensures middle and high school students have a safe, supportive and creative environment to learn, engage in activities based on their interests, and build meaningful and positive relationships with peers and adults. “NAZA strives to create a non-formal learning environment that gives children and youth choice, an opportunity to participate and to develop vital fundamental skills, such as communication, sense of purpose, sense of belonging, care for others, being a part of the team,” said Anna Harutyunyan, NAZA coordinator. A typical NAZA-funded after-school program day includes a snack, academic time (such as book club, STEM, or writing activities) and homework help. It also includes enrichment activities like dance, visual art, pottery, step, acting workshops, spoken word, and sports. Meanwhile, NAZA Summer Zone gives high school students a six-week opportunity to engage in paid experience-learning programs. High school summer programs are delivered in partnership with Academies of Nashville and Opportunity NOW and are focused on building hard and soft skills from marketing to coding and design, from teamwork to perseverance, problem solving and financial literacy.

KEEPING KIDS SHARP DURING SUMMER: NPL’S SUMMER CHALLENGE
“From academically-driven patrons to those struggling with grades, Studio NPL is designed to provide enriching activities for all,” said Studio Coordinator Niq Tognoni. “Everything in our spaces, even the most technically advanced, professional-level equipment, is meant to be touched and experimented with.” Budding inventors, musicians, podcasters, and artists can blossom while working with specialized production equipment and technology, including a 3D printer, paper circuits, e-textiles, soldering, robotics, and more. Local professionals from the STEAM industries serve as adult mentors in these environments. They support students in eight Studios—including a 2,500-square-foot flagship Studio at the Main Library and a traveling, mobile Studio. “At its heart, Studio NPL programming encourages full and passionate participation from Nashville’s teen population as they explore their talents and discover new opportunities to engage with each other, their communities, and their world,” Tognoni said. MAKING LIBRARIES THE COOLEST PLACE IN SCHOOL: LIMITLESS LIBRARIES Limitless Libraries is the groundbreaking partnership between NPL and Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) whose goal is to improve student success by enhancing school libraries; sharing resources; and providing access to quality books, online resources, and other learning materials.
If students stop reading during summer break, they lose the academic skills they built during the school year. We call this learning loss the “summer slide.” Students can keep summer slide at bay by participating in NPL’s Summer Challenge: reading and completing simple learning activities to earn points and redeem them for fun prizes. NPL Summer Challenge isn’t only for students in Pre-K to grade 12. The initiative is open to all. In fact, by reading to and with young people and simply living the “reading lifestyle,” adults can set a great example as “reading rock stars”—and earn prizes of their own. Summer Challenge is made possible by Advance Financial Foundation and the Nashville Public Library Foundation. Learn More: library.nashville.org/summerchallenge
OPENING DOORS TO LIFELONG LEARNING: ADULT EDUCATION AT NPL The library’s adult education efforts cover a wide spectrum of literacy topics. Nashville’s lifelong learners visit their library to learn how to read for the first time, to read more, or to become even stronger readers. They come to use public computers and Wi-Fi, build their online skills, and take technology classes. At NPL, learners can become stronger English speakers and study U.S. civics. They turn to NPL to become more health literate and more financially savvy. Adult education initiatives at NPL are made possible by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, HCA Foundation, SunTrust Foundation, and the Nashville Public Library Foundation. The back-to-school rush can be hectic for Nashville families. But students, parents, and grandparents can leap back into the school year—and stay on track all year round—with free tools at Nashville Public Library (NPL).
BEGIN YOUR NEXT BOOK ADVENTURE
Reading 20 minutes a day to and with the little ones in your life will set them up for success in school and beyond. Young readers can easily pick out their next adventure in print with the help of the NPL Readers System. Colored dots on the spines of most children’s books indicate four reading levels—from a blue dot meaning a few words or a short sentence per page, up to an orange dot for books with paragraphs and sometimes chapters. Look for these color-coded books in the children’s section of your library location, or check with your children’s librarian for books that are appropriate for your young reader.
Parents are their child’s first teachers. Liz Atack, BBTL Manager BOOKS ARE ONLY HALF THE STORY
Take learning everywhere you go with ReadyRosie, a learning app that uses video modeling and mobile technology to help busy parents turn daily activities into “learning moments.” Videos are available in English and Spanish and with Arabic and Vietnamese subtitles. “Parents are their child’s first teachers,” said Elizabeth Atack, program manager for the Library’s Bringing Books to Life early literacy initiative. “By singing, talking, reading, writing, and playing with their child, parents support their child’s reading readiness in fun and easy ways.” Nashville Public Library also has Launchpads — durable tablets pre-loaded with quality, ad-free learning apps. Thousands of apps grouped by age and grade level in themed learning packs include princesses, animals, and dinosaurs to help kids learn while playing. Parents can even get an analysis of the games played. To Find: Search for “launchpad” at catalog.library.nashville.org
BRING STORY TIME HOME
Children of all ages love story time. Playaway Bookpacks combine traditional books with their audiobook versions for every age and reading level, so kids can read along while they listen to a wide range of titles. Reading along helps build comprehension, vocabulary, and language fluency. To Find: Search for “bookpack” at catalog.nashville.library.org

The Online World is a Jungle NPL Cuts a Path with Digital Literacy Efforts
Connecting to the internet and knowing how to use it is a requirement for many aspects of daily life. However, there are neighbors in our community who are still not fully integrated into the digital conversation. Barriers to digital connectivity and knowledge can affect senior citizens, keeping them from socializing with family or accessing vital resources. Digital literacy is essential to community-wide literacy. That’s why Nashville Public Library (NPL) has supported digital inclusion for more than 20 years, offering free access to public computers, Wi-Fi, and technology classes. The library has also expanded beyond its physical locations to bring the digital conversation directly to people in the places where they live, play, and work. NPL’s Digital Inclusion Initiatives team offers classes and workshops at community sites across Davidson County. The library’s Senior Tech Academy helps Nashville’s seniors discover the potential of technology—and their own potential—one graduate at a time. “We are helping seniors to develop the skills they need in order to use technology to make their lives easier, better, and more informed,” said Marian Christmon, Manager of Digital Inclusion Initiatives.
I did not think I was capable; I felt like I was too old to learn. But I’m standing here to tell you that you’re never too old to learn. You put one foot in front of the other, and you’ll succeed. Samuel Maupins, Senior Tech Academy graduate These courses are made possible through partnerships with local organizations such as FiftyForward and Metro Parks, as well as national organizations including United Way and the National Coalition on Aging. “Through the classes I’ve had lots of fun making friends with new people, and I’ve had a whole new world open up to me,” said Diane Salyers, another recent graduate. Digital inclusion programs at Nashville Public Library are made possible by the Nashville Public Library Foundation with additional support from the West End Home Foundation.
Senior Tech Academy is an eight-class series, in which the team teaches seniors basic technology skills. The program begins with “Ways Being Online Can Improve Your Life,” which helps show how being online relates to daily life.

The team then trains seniors on how to use the internet, apps, and tablets, which they receive upon graduating the full program.
